So in other words, would I draft Elliot if he's available?  No, I wouldn't.  From what I've been reading, Hunter Henry is the only TE with a 1st round grade and I find it very hard to believe that he would be THAT much better than the best player available at another position.  As for WR...pretty much the same as TE...I doubt that the best WR available when the Colts draft will be THAT much better than the best DL, OLB, ILB, CB etc.

You can only trade down if the guy you have your eye on can be had at the new position. So you take the elite player unless it is a guarantee you can get the guy yo would take at eighteen (if the elite players didn't Fall) to the position you traded at.  To do anything else would mean you lost two worthy players in order to get a couple 'good' ones later.  I don't see logic in letting other teams have Elite and Very Good players while your team stocks up with a mass quantity of merely 'good' players.

I was just curious.  Last year, it seemed like we could've traded down for a position of need, but we went with the "elite" player that was still left on the board (Dorsett).

We could probably do the same this year.  Maybe a guy like Elliot is available at #18, but do we take the elite skill player, or trade down for a position of need?

I'd say it's a win-win situation.  There isn't as much pressure to "hit" on the 1st round pick as, say, the Titans or Browns...

LOL, definitely!  I like everything that I have watched and read on this kid.  Been following him for the last couple of seasons after seeing him tear it up on ESPN one night.  He is real similar in size to Reed and he is a playmaker like Reed, INTs, Fumbles, big hits, etc...playing next to Geathers would make a pretty nasty duo IMO!

I don't remember Reed being the hitter that Joseph is, but I think Reed is the greatest ball-hawking safety ever.  Either way, with the age of Adams, Joseph could see significant time on the field and be the "gem" of our draft.

    Karl Joseph, Safety, West Virginia

He's a playmaker; INTs, big hits, forced fumbles...does it all.  Reminds me of Ed Reed, would make a great pairing with Geathers.

Ed Reed? More like Mike Singletary playing safety.  He even has "Singletary Eyes".  If I played offense, the last thing I want to see on the other side of the LOS is "Singletary Eyes"...

I love me some ball-hawking DBs.  Plus I was born in WV, so I'm all for adding a Mountaineer to the Colts.

I wouldn't complain. If we traded down to the top of the 2nd, we could get another 2nd, a possible 1st in 2017, or a 3rd and a 4th this year. I understand that we would be filling a ton of needs with more picks high in the draft that would benefit the team.

I agree.  Once you get past the "elite" players that can make an immediate impact (about halfway through the 1st round), it's more about quantity than quality.  Acquire as many "good" rookies as possible and separate the wheat from the chaff in training camp.

For you guys talking about Ryan Kelly. In order for us to take him in the 1st he would need to be an elite center. I don't see him being an all pro caliber center in the same category as Mack, Fredrick, Mangold, etc.

I could see the Colts trading down and trying to get Kelly at the top of the 2nd.  But then the forum will explode with "but we could've gotten (insert defensive player) at #18!!!"

RB and Interior Oline (I wouldn't mind a tackle but we shouldn't get a guard or centre since the value for those positions is good in rounds 2-5)

I would hate for us to reach and I do not think there is a first round C, G, or S that would be worth us taking.  Not graded as a value 1st round pick anyways at #18.

Yeah, a G or C would really have to justify using #18 on them, but if the right player is there, we need the help.

I would be upset if we selected another WR in the first round.

    WR!

I can see that.  We would basically be drafting, at best, a WR3.  Which is exactly what we did last year.  I remember Detroit banging their head against the WR wall for years.

We do have Luck though.  He might not be the WR-star-maker that Manning was, but we're one injury away from that WR3 becoming a WR2... and if that WR is a red-zone stud, well then, I'd be OK with it.  We need a red-zone threat besides Allen and Moncrief.

Need is not going to dictate who is on Grigson's board. It will be the best player available.

To a degree yes.  I doubt he will pick a QB just because they are the BPA.  Especially after the Tolzien signing.  But just about any other position that isn't FB, K, or P is in the mix for our 1st round pick.  Kind of a can't miss pick when we can use help all over the field...

Matt Judon, who will be picked early enough to draw the ire of fans, but who will deliver on the field.

He looks good, but I don't know if he would see the field enough as a rookie unless Anderson or Langford have lingering injury issues throughout the season.  He might be a gem 2 or 3 seasons down the road when he is starting though.

Kentrell Brothers ILB. I have really started to like him and would be so happy if we got him in the 3rd round. Has grown each season in college, and broke out last year in a huge way leading the nation with 152 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 2 1/2 sacks, 2 INTs, three pass breakups, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and three blocked kicks. He can do it all and can lead our linebacking corps. A leader that we need on this team that can be special.

    Wisconsin OLB Joe Schobert

I like both these guys.  With the age of Jackson, Cole, and Mathis, we need some young high-motor guys that can help out the LBers this year.

  12. Ok, so last year, IMO, Henry Anderson ended up being the "gem" of our draft.  He was drafted in the 3rd, but ended up starting and playing better than some 1st rounders from other teams last year.  You could probably say the same about Parry playing solid as a 5th rounder.

Who do you think will be our "gem" this year?

I saw a mock draft with the Colts taking Devontae Booker (RB - Utah) in the middle rounds.  Perhaps he would see significant playing time if Gore got injured.

I know this is kind of a silly crap-shoot to predict, but it's still something fun to think about leading up to the draft. :worms:

Had the correct choices been made we could have a legitimate SB shot, but we know that didn't happen.  With that being said I would rather have used Lucks rookie contract to acquire the pieces that had primed us to be a perennial legitimate SB contender by last season or this season ... Instead of a couple of good seasons but not really a SB contender. Now we have to "be patient" again because Grigson jacked it up the first time.

Please name a SB winner that hasn't had to "be patient".

Nobody has repeated since the Pats, and they had to wait a decade after their "dynasty" to get another one.

If it was easy enough that you didn't have to "be patient", then every GM would check that box and avoid "being patient" with an ever-changing diverse staff.

A wasted rookie contract on our QB

Try to have some perspective man.  Russel Wilson had a dream rookie contract because he rode a great defense to a championship.

But outside of anyone name Manning, Brady, Rothlisberger, Rodgers, or Brees, nobody else has won a Super Bowl recently, much less on a rookie contract.  Luck came close, and has had a pretty epic rookie contract in terms of wins and stats.

Or Castonzo, Mewhort, (new guy), (new guy) and Reitz.

Hopefully, yes.  And I like Reitz because he's a hometown guy, but I'd be Ok with him being a backup.  He's like a swiss army knife.  He can do just about anything, but he's not the best for, say, "chopping wood"...

The Dolphins yes.  I don't know who thought the jets were going to get top level QB play.

but that isn't my point.  The problem isn't whether you use or don't use free agency. It's whether you have a quarterback.

Then I think we agree.  We will still have the best QB in the division, no matter how FA shakes out.  Then it just comes down to injuries and coaches not making mistakes.

    Well....      ahhhh....     ummmmm....

Yes....      the 49ers DID trade Joe Montana.     To KC.

No,  Green Bay didn't trade Favre,  but they let him walk,  and he ended up playing for the Jets and the arch rival Vikings.     The Packers had this kid named Rodgers that they wanted to play.

NO,  the Colts didn't trade Manning,  but they chose Luck over Manning when push came to shove.

Ok, the 49ers wanted to keep Montana, but he demanded a trade.  If the Pats end up with the second coming of Steve Young nipping at Bradys' heels, maybe Brady demands a trade.

Point is that NE won't surprise Brady with a trade so they can pick up an extra draft pick.  Not if they want the eternity of NE-Brady Love that they are destined for when he retires.

Yeah they'll spend all there cap space on one player. Luck needs to take to less so he's not ripe to shreds on every passing plays.
