  1.

    Cut
    Andre Johnson
    Trent Cole

    Kelechi Osemele OT/OG 5/42
He is a versatile lineman who took over for Baltimore at LT the last couple of games. We can bring him in and move Retiz back to RG.

    Reggie Bush RB 1/1.5
This is a band aid at RB. Reggie had a break out year at Miami and we brought the former HC to be OL coach. He also was used as a receiving threat in Detroit. The mix of Gore and Bush can sustain us until the great RB class of 17.

    Morris Claiborne CB 3/16
New system and lower expectations could do wonders for this former top 10 pick. Pags worked wonders with Davis coming out of college Claiborne was rated higher as for as talent and abilities. This could be the steal of FA if he comes close to his potential.

    Tashaun Gipson FS 5/35
The Browns only have 1 franchise tag. They potentially could have Mack and Schwartz leaving from a o-line that should be protecting a rookie QB. Gipson falls through the cracks and we scoop him to pair with Geathers for the future.

Trade down with Redskin and pick up a 3rd

    Redskin pick Ezekiel Elliott
It makes sense for the Redskins to jump ahead of the Jets who has both running backs hitting free agency.

    1. Nick Martin C 6'5 300lbs Norte Dame
This is a reach but very important for this line and to show Luck we are serious about keeping him. Both Pouncey brothers who play center was drafted between 15 and 20 in the 1st round so this is not heard of.

    Pro Comparison: Nick Mangold

    2. Kyler Fracker OLB 6'5 245lbs Utah State
He played 3-4 OLB at college giving him a big learning curve coming into our defense. He is good against both the run and pass rushing while showing the ability to also drop into coverage.

    Pro Comparison: Ryan Kerrigan

    3. Yannick Ngakoue OLB 6'2 245lbs Maryland
Undersized but he has a non stop motor and has proven himself against NFL talent.

    Pro Comparison: Baby Robert Mathis

    https://youtu.be/NIbE2jCi684

    3. Artie Burns CB 6 190lbs Miami
Long athletic built CB who also was on the track team at Miami. He can play on the outside with great closing speed for off man coverage.

    Pro Comparison: Bashaud Breeland

    https://youtu.be/XYJwRJcCbFo

    4. Landon Turner OG 6'3 325
One of the top senior guards out there. He falls because of his lack of ability to play multiple position on the line. This move gives us wiggle room for injuries or in the future if we choose to play Mewhort at RT.

    Pro Comparison: Jeff Allen

    5. Terrance Smith ILB 6'4 220lbs FSU
A tall lanky but aggressive tackler. He can drop into coverage and step right in and play special teams. He should be able to step in for D Jax next year.

    Pro Comparison: Telvin Smith

    https://youtu.be/YJzV8Pr_iUE

    7. D'haquille Williams WR 6'2 225 Auburn
Griggs has shown he is willing to gamble on WR we had Brazil and Rodgers. Williams is a big body WR who typically line up in the slot. He has decent long speed and can box out LB or CB for the ball.

    Pro Comparison: Braylon Edwards

  2. I've really been thinking about this subject as of late. Why do we miss out on some players and land others. What really catches FA eyes and honestly (please try not to be a homer) where do the Colts fall in the NFL as attractive destinations. I came up with a couple of categories and I weighed them 1 to 10 (least to most) in my opinion. Some of the categories can blend into each other.

    Players/Friends
The idea that a team is like a family is generally correct but there are clicks. The chance to play with a friend or old team mate maybe appealing especially in a new city. Also playing on a good team may lead to the Super Bowls, playoff game checks, and endorsements off the field.

Positive examples: Players taking pay cuts to keep teammates.

Negative example: Miami Dolphins OL hazing

    5/10

    Coaches/Scheme/Playing Time
Similar to friends, Coaches may have ties to certain players. That loyalty and familiarity can go a long way. The more coaches win the more a player may buy into system. Scheme is also huge a 4-3 defense end may not transition well into a 3-4 defense end. Scheme can determine how successful a player can become. Playing time is important to most players.  A chance to get on the field and earn more money through  incentives.

Positive: Ryan Fitzpatrick worked well with his old OC this year for the Jets.

Negative example: Chip Kelly and the Eagles trading away players. Also  having Murray in a bad system fit.

    6/10

    Cities/Market/Division
Anytime a player switches teams he has to at least get a apartment in that city he plays. Some players up root their families also and have to think about how everyone will adjust. Is the city easy to get around, weather, privacy and entertainment also factor when picking a team. The NFL is great at marketing but each player has a chance to market themselves with endorsements. New York is a bigger market than Kansas City but on the field all that matters is winning. Division also plays a part in the decision. Easy routes to getting to the playoffs (coughs AFC south) and earn extra money. Whether a player wants to play inside, outside, natural grass or turf should be taken into consideration not only forthe team they sign for but the division also. Balls become hard in the cold weather WR and Kickers have to account for things like that.

Positive: Charles Woodson retires where it all started for him Oakland.

Negative: Mike Wallace turned down more money from the Vikings to play in Miami. Unfortunately Miami traded him to the Vikings this season.

    6/10

    Money
"For the love of money". We seen time and time a player going to get the money and who can blame them the average career ofa football player isn't long.

    9.5/10

There are 32 teams in the NFL where do we rank? Who is the top 5 who ranks bottom 5? Where do our rivals rank? How and where do we improve? Lastly everyone has a dream free agent this off season why do we get them to sign here using these categories why do he selects us over other teams?

  4. Imo if everyone is going after the same 3 players their prices are bound to rise to the point where it would hurt the team to actually sign them. Especially when we still have to sign Luck so that's why I went outside the box on most of these players. I'm hoping coaching can really get these players to perform well for us hence Morris Claiborne Nick Perry and Dion Jordan who are all 1st rounders

  5. Guys I wanted to make a different type of off season mock. We know Griggs and Pags are tied at the hip and there should be more compromise going forth. I'm going to propose  a few free agent signings and you can put together the draft to complete and make this a good off season.

Goal is to get younger while fielding a team that can win the division.

Kelvin Beachum RT (Steelers) 26 years-old
    5/32 million
He is the LT for the Steelers he is coming off of a injury so we get our RT at a discounted rate. I think we can steal him away from the Steelers.

Morris Claiborne CB (Cowboys) 25 years old
    3/18 million
He is a former high draft pick who is just now showing some potential. Chuck did wonders with Vonte if he can work his magic again we can have a dynamic duo.

Reggie Bush RB (49ers) 30 years old
    1/1.5 million
He is coming off of a injury so this is a prove it deal. Hopefully he comes in and provide a spark similar to when he played in Detroit. He can provide a nice check down option for Luck.

Nick Perry OLB (Packers) 25 years old
    3/20 million
We use the money on extending Luck so we don't have the luxury of going after Von Miller or Bruce Irvin. Perry is a under performing athletic OLB. Hopefully our DC can help him tap into his greatness.

Trade 2017 7th round pick for
Dion Jordan OLB (Dolphins) 25 years old
Two years remains on his rookie contract. This should be the fresh start he needs and another athletic OLB our DC can mold. The Dolphins get rid of a headache and move away from the former 3rd pick of the draft.

This isn't the dream off season most of us expected but honestly I don't see FA knocking down our door to play here. I wanted to try to make this realistic and keep in mind our acquisitions last off season on paper was impressive but didn't produce on the field as expected so hopefully we learned from that.
Of course we still have some holes to fill so let's see your best draft to complete this team!

  6. I had a look around the league for some assistant coaches that I felt could help us move towards the super bowl. Assistantscan't move laterally meaning they can't leave a OC job for another OC job unless contract is up. I also wanted to gauge the chances of having them for 3 or more years. Factoring in chances for leaving for HC job or retirement as well as the fit with our personnel. I tried to be realistic so you won't find a Mike Holmgreen, Chip Kelly or Peyton Manning but if you like those guys please comment how they would fit.

    Offense

    Tom Cable

He runs a vertical offense which will utilize our speedy recievers. Also he is a great o-line coach. Seahawks have not missed a beat without Beast mode. He believes in execution more so than being cute. His blue collar work ethic should improve our line immensely.

Chances of staying 3 or more years

Great: had a incident when he was head coach for the Raiders.

    Ken Zampese

He has been the one constant for Andy Dalton during the different OC coaches. He was offensive assistance for the Rams 2000 through 2002 during the greatest show on turf. Also working as same position for the Packers before the Rams.

Chances of staying 3 or more years

Great: if his history remains the same he doesn't seems to want to be a head coach.

    Aaron Kromer

He has a history of putting together good offensive lines. Twice winning awards in New Orleans for his work protecting Drew Brees. In Chicago as OC they had 2nd highest scoring team and broke franchise records in in total yards, passing yards, passing touchdowns and first downs. In Buffalo he worked with a offensive line that was successful for 3 different backs and protected a running QB. He has ties to both Marc Tressman and Sean Payton.

Chances of staying 3 or more years

Great: he had troubles with Jay Cutler and leaked club news to media. Front offices will not be forgetting that anytime soon.

    Defense

    Ray Horton

He is a product of Dick LeBeau coaching tree. A aggressive 3-4 blitzer who has helped build the cardinals defense. Currently sculpting Tennessee into a 3-4 I like that he already has a insight on the division. A hard nose coach who intensity should impact this defense.

Chances of staying 3 or more years

Poor: he really wants a shot at a HC job. He left cardinals as soon as they hired B.A.

    Rob Ryan

Similar to Wade Phillips he often improves the team defense tremendously in the first year. He runs a base 3-4 but gives the QB multiple looks to confuse them. This may work well in our division with the young and inexperienced QBs. Chuck is a defensive coach also and this may help Ryan succeed beyond his 1st season. Both Cowboys and Saints were in their 2nd or 3rd year in transforming from a 4-3 to a 3-4 when he was let go.

Chances of staying 3 or more years

Moderate: he seems to wear his welcome out with his personality. Players love him and playing for his family.

    Mike Nolan

Head coaching pedigree with the 49ers. Work all around the league. He has experience running 4-3, 3-4 and 4-2-5. He is very scheme versatile which could have us looking different week to week depending the opponent a la the Patriots.

Chances of staying 3 or more years

Moderate: during his coaching career he has always been a builder of defenses. I believe with the right tools he can be successful.

Any assistant coaches you are looking at to join our staff? Please let me know if these guys will make a "splash" or not.

  7. Real Quick run down of my off season plan with Luck contract in mind.

    Cuts (major cuts)
    Andre Johnson
    Trent Cole
    D. Jackson

    Free Agency

    Ron Leary (Guard)
The Cowboys have there guard of the future in wait. Leary is a proven starter in the NFL but similar to Bradshaw he has a past of injuries. Can come in and push Thornton for starting position.

    Junior Gallette (OLB) or JPP
Both of these prospects provide premium pass rushing ability for a discounted price. I don't expect there to be a bidding war for either one.

    Antonio Cromarte (CB)
He isn't a free agent yet but he should hit the market with his high cap cost for the Jets. He has regressed but he is still an upgrade from Toler.

    Draft

    1. Trade down with Broncos, Broncos get 18th pick we pick between 26 and 29th we get their 3rd and 7th pick.

    1. Jason Spriggs (OT) Indiana
Reitz did good enough for me to feel comfortable leaving him at RT. Spriggs can bulk up and ease into the line up as he develops or if we have a injury.

    2. Yannick Ngakoue (OLB) Maryland
A underrated pass rusher who has put up sacks against NFL talent.

    3. Cameron Sutton (CB) Tennessee
A aggressive CB who can press and hold up on a island alone. Cromarte is a short term fix at CB 2.

    3. Wayne Gallman (RB) Clemson
Vision decent speed and soft hands will help take pressure off Luck. I think he should come in as a rotational player especially if we bring back Bradshaw.

    4. Miles Killbrew (ILB) Southern Utah
A small school safety that is very similar to Shaq Thompson of last year.

    5. Matt Skurra (C/OG) Duke
Holmes still under contract for 1 year and he hasn’t been great yet he provides stability for Luck while Skurra prepares to take over next year.

    7. Trade to dolphins for Dion Jordan
Dolphins will have a new coach and heading in a new direction. We kick the tires and see what he can contribute to the 3-4 defense. He has at least 2 years left on his rookie contract which should be cheap because Miami pays all bonuses and etc.

    7. Tyvis Powell (S) Ohio State
He is a sure tackler and comes up big in clutch moments. He needs a year to work on his pursue angles and put on his NFL weight

  8. 10 hours ago, southwest1 said:

Tom Cable is an interesting choice not as OC though no way. O-line coach like you say would be intriguing though since he's really transformed that Pacific NW front in say the past 4-5 weeks when QB RW got paid $20 million per year & their front office was compelled to start trading their depth away.

Cable has essentially re-molded that line with no name average joes & RW is getting into his groove now. I remember Cable in Oakland & didn't really notice him, but ever since he landed in grunge country, he's definitely made a name for himself.

I think you cant move laterally so we would have to promote him to OC

  9. Kyle shanahan HC
Just like his father he uses a zone running scheme. Which has been successful in many of his stops. His passing scheme is versatile. He has used the vertical passing game in Houston. While utilizing his TEs when he was with the Browns. He ran a pistol with RG3. Now that he is in Atlanta he has a WR and RB in top 5 statistically in their respective positions. He is a young creative offensive mind that will have a former head coach and a veteran coordinator to help in game situations.

    Tom Cable OC

  10. I think its exciting to think about new coaches and even more fun to mock draft. This post is more focus on the foundation of our offense. I really want us to examine what players we have and their strengths and weaknesses to try to figure out what is the best system for our team.

    For example

    Andrew Luck

    Has great arm strength

Willing to extend plays by running or moving in the pocket

Not scared to make any throw

    Average short pass accuracy

    Best fit Air Coryell Offense

    TY Hilton

    Small fast reciever

Can take the top off defenses

Do not take hits (steps out of bounds)

Can be slowed down by press

Best fit is West Coast Offense

    Donte Moncrief

    Willing to go over middle

    Good long speed

    Body catcher

    Best fit Run and Shoot

I want to thank Gary Morris for breaking down different offensive concepts. Here is the original link

    http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2014/8/11/5965033/football-101-understanding-basic-nfl-offensive-concepts

Air Coryell Offense - This system is built upon a numbering system for the receivers that starts with the premise that the main route is the go route, also called the fly or the seam, where the receiver runs straight up the field. All the other routes are numbered based upon where and how they break off the main trunk of what they call the "route tree."

West Coast Offense - The basic concept of the West Coast offense is to stretch the defense horizontally by using short passes early in the game. These short passes are difficult for the defense to stop, since the pass rush has no time to get to the quarterback. The offense scores early, and then runs on the spread out defense. The offense can also throw deep on a defense that's keyed in on shorter routes.

Run and Shoot - The Run 'n' Shoot is really a sight adjustment offense. Receivers and the quarterback move to the line of scrimmage with many different routes that each receiver can run. The placement of the defenders dictates the pass route and route combinations. With four receivers at the line, this becomes problematic for the defense.

These are a few of many but I believe its a good start. This could be a tool for us when looking at potential coaches.

Thanks for the read and comments

  11. 1. I like reading and doing mock drafts,  no I'm not a professional but i do love the idea of thinking of ways our team can be better. Every year we have a new team some people get added some people get drop players grow in talent and some regress.

    2. As far as the offensive line beyond what i said above. I was looking at  Isaiah Battle as a red shirt freshman or like a draft pick.  There are teams (seahawks, Bucs, Falcons) with terrible lines but they have RB that have gone over at least 90 yards multiple times this year. Elliott with this  off season plan has  Shanahan (Arian Foster, Freeman, Coleman, Alfred Morris) and Tom Cable who has Seattle not missing a step even without beast mode to help him succeed. Not mentioning Gore and or Bradshaw to mentor him.

    3. Speaking of coaches I haven't forgave Chud for dumping T. Richardson on us. Defending Kyle Shanahan he had Brian Hoyer playing like an all pro when he was with the Browns. Matt Schaub was a viable starter when he was with Kyle. Guys he help make RG3 Rookie of the year and Atlanta was firing on all cylinders for the first quarter of the season. What changed was turn overs we can't blame all of that on Kyle. Atlanta offensive line is * poor, Matt Ryan seem to regress and they haven't been able to execute in the red zone. I'm trying to understand why people think he isn't good at what he does.

Lastly we can agree to disagree we all would love to see the Colts win a super bowl let me be greedy multiple super bowls with Luck. I appreciate your opinions, learning about different draft prospect and gaining knowledge on football and my team in general
