    This is the mistake a lot of fans make.  Talented players are not cut early on in the season. Talented players are on rosters so their talent can help the team win.

    Not if they are raw. Russell is a raw athlete that is going to need time to develop into a solid starting CB/S. He has a lot of tools you want, but he needs work. Teams sometimes have to cut good athletes with great potential in order to keep players that can contribute more right away.

    Fair enough.

    It's incredibly hard prognosticating anything past the 2nd round at this point, IMO, but my dream scenario at this juncture is Devonte Fields in rd. 1 and Freeman in rd. 2.

    I haven't watched Fields this year yet so I can't comment based on this season. I know he is a very talented player, but he is a bit too inconsistent IMO to be regarded as a 1st rounder at the moment. If he puts a solid season on tape this year though, and preforms well at the combine then yes he might jump his draft stock to the 1st round.

    I couldn't agree more on Freeman in the 2nd round I am a big fan of his.

    Barnett is a 43 end all day, you're 2nd and 3rd rd picks are a round too late, and I don't even know what to say about Lewis in the 4th.

    You may be right on all that you point out....

    Then again,  it's mid-September and we're all grasping for names right now.

    And the poster DID list alternate names now, so it's not like we married to any of this.

    None of this will mean much until he season plays out and it's January and we have a much better idea of where guys stack up.        And even then,  things will change many times before we reach April.

    That said....   the OP did say he used CBS Sports early list, and there's the issue,  not the poster.        In the early months,  CBS Sports is notoriously poor.    They get better when the calendar changes in January and gets even better as we get closer to the draft.      That's when they're good.

    Exactly what NCF said.

    I also did state later on in this tread that this is a way too early mock draft.

    To be honest I never comment much on player value, and mocks until much closer to the draft as like NCF said so much changes between now and the draft. I deviated this year, and threw some names out for the sake of discussion. Trust me this is not my final mock there is going to be a lot of ascending and descending as the season continues.

    I appreciate everyone's opinion, and suggestions on players they like at certain points of the draft. It is nice to compare my thoughts on a player against others. Sometimes posters here on the forum recognize different traits both pros or cons that I didn't pick up on right away.

    The problem you have with my quickly pieced together mock is rounds 1-4 correct? Who would you suggest replace the players accordingly?

    I actually think he'd be a quality CB who could play the boundary or slot. I am with those who think if you want to unlock the real talent put him at S. He wasn't a day 2 guy to me. I thought he should go back to school and think he might have if that didn't happen to Jaylon.  Imagine where he goes if he runs the 4.34 he ran before the injury.  You watch tape from the big games he flashes. CB is a tough spot to predict.

    I agree I think he would flourish at S. His tackling was great for a corner, but would be average for a safety. He would have to improve in that aspect. He has trouble tracking the ball at times, but when he does he has some the best ball skills in the entire draft class. I think that the move to safety would be a project, but I don't think it would take him very long to transition his skill set accordingly. I still think he could be at least a slightly above average press CB he just needs work with his technique mostly at the LOS.

    If he ran that 4.34 during the combine chances are he would have been drafted much higher than the 3rd. Especially if he had decided to go back to school and put another year of solid play on tape.

    Really it is too bad our roster is as thin as it is. If injuries weren't such a problem for us right now we could take chances on highly talented players like this and try to stash and develop these players in to solid pieces of our team down the line.

  5. 25 minutes ago, akcolt said:

    He did not clear Cinny put him on their 53.man roster I knew we could not do that. We have too many injuries to try to stash a guy on the 53 man. I think if he cleared waivers we would have most definitely put him on the PS if we had a chance. The only way that was going to happen was if he was still dealing with the injury even then I think someone would have grabbed him. We should look at the OL Cinny dropped from their 53 man.

    That is what most of my posts earlier on was mostly based on. Like you said we have too many injuries to pick up a project DB to groom him into an eventual starter/rotational player. I have no doubts on why you believe that Russell could have turned into a great press corner as that is what he excelled in at ND.

    I just believe that after watching him both at ND, and with the Chiefs that he would need some development in key areas in order to produce consistent quality snaps. Plus with all of our injuries I see that the staff plays a lot of zone defense to try to cover up our injuries in the secondary. I don't think putting Russell out in zone coverages would be a good idea until he is coached up more in that aspect.

    Overall if we were healthier I believe Grigs would be more interested in all of these talented players that are being cut early on in the season. If we were healthy and could stash Russell for development I would have been all for it, but to throw him out in the fire over a more experienced proven NFL player I don't think would have been a good idea.

    Where did you see him play? In college?

    Yep several times in college, and two preseason games with KC. From his good games vs. USC and Texas to his poor games. What I referred to in my previous post is I believe he was overdrafted along with several other analysts. IMO I seen him as a late 4th to early 5th round prospect. While watching him in KC he struggled with a lot of the same stuff that he did in college. Plus at times he looked lost out on the field. To be honest KCs other rookie corner D.J. White looked much better. In the end KC had an influx of talented corners and one had to go. Russell was the least developed at the moment, so he was the guy to go. That is not to say that Russell doesn't have a higher ceiling I was just saying don't expect consistent solid starting snaps from Russell till he has a chance to develop in the league.

  7. Don't read too much into the draft position he was taken at. Many analysts had him ranked much lower with grades in the 5th-6th round. He tends to struggle with press coverage which is a red flag for us, and has sloppy technique at the LOS. Although when playing the ball he is one of the best to come out of the draft last year. He sometimes struggles to locate the ball in the air, but when he does he has great ball skills.

    His ball skills and speed (4.43) makes him a candidate to possibly switch to safety, but his tackling would be below average for a safety. I am not completely opposed to the idea of bringing him in. Just IMO I think he needs a lot of work to get him to be productive rotational member of our secondary.

    I am not very confident with Reitz at RT.  I would prefer him at Guard.

    I hope someone steps up and becomes an anchor at RT (Good, Clark Blythe or some other capables)

    With how terrible Reitz is as a run blocker I don't think he would transition back to guard very well. I think Reitz is a great backup swing tackle, but I don't think he is much more than average starting material. I think after this season he will be replaced at RT.

    I'm still laughing at DefJamz26 "Look out for that surprise cut in Denzelle Good" "He's a career backup".  "Too Much Hype"  Just another Xavier Nixon.  Hmmmmm

    I mean everyone is entitled to their own opinion I just tend to also disagree with that statement like you. This preseason is what made me more optimistic than ever. When we played the Eagles Good lined up and stonewalled Fletcher Cox several times it showed me he was going to be just fine. It is also nice to see that perhaps Grigs hit on one of his late round picks. Like I said lets hope this trend continues, and that Good can develop into a above average to top tier guard.

    This is what impressed me the most during the Lions game was Good's performance against Ngata. This whole preseason the forum was worried about our RG position rightfully so. I have been a fan of Good, so it was nice to see him come in and have a very encouraging game, and to show he belongs in the starting lineup. Hopefully he continues to develop and grow in the position as he gets more reps.

    Which made watching Freeman play well on Sunday against Houston just painful. We just let him walk cheap and he did a very good job in coverage the other day. I know he wasn't an elite LB but he was a solid LB against the pass for us....well at least better than anything else we had. We need to get more dynamic on defense. Across the board at ILB and OLB (Rush) we need some athletes out there. No wonder they can't cover/rush...just a very poor group of old and washed up LBs overall. Definitely the weakness of the defense. I know we had to fix our OL but man we haven't drafted a legit playmaking LB in awhile it seems.

    I was a big fan of Freeman here in Indy, and he was coming off of a very nice year last year. I personally don't see why we moved on from him, but that is all done and past. I would of really liked to see Sio and Freeman play next to each other, with Morrison coming in on short yardage, and goaline work.

    I seriously doubt Desmond King falls into the 2nd round.

    I'm an Iowa fan and thus far after 2 games I don't think he's been thrown at a single time.  Plus he has return ability.

    Like I said this all preliminary. If you look up his draft stock right now he is rated as a 2nd rounder on CBSsports which is what I used for a baseline for this mock. I agree with you I believe he is a first round talent. I see him falling somewhere in the bottom of the 1st. I just threw this mock together to throw some names out.

    I'd be thrilled with either Freeman or Hood in the 3rd round.     I'd fear neither will fall to us.

    I'm surprised you think Da'Shawn Hand falls to the 4th.     Alabama players don't fall that far very often.

    I'm a little surprised you think King falls to us in the 2nd.    Our pick is likely out of the top-50, and I'm not sure King falls that far?       Also,  I think he's closer to 5'10" (maybe shorter?)....     so I'm not sure he fits the Colts ideal profile?       Just thinking out loud.

    Appreciate you doing the homework to produce all these names.     The effort alone is always very much appreciated.

    Like I said this is all just to throw a few names out there. If you look up player value on cbssports it gives you a basis to lay out a way too early mock draft. That is the tool I used to put it together quickly with some players I like. I enjoy hearing feedback, and opinions of others on the listed players. I also appreciate hearing suggestions of others players to consider.

    I think Hood should most likely still be around in the 3rd, now Freeman it is up in the air it really depends on how fast the other top backs come off the board. He could very well be gone as early as the late 1st.

    Hand again is rated as a 4th at the moment. Chances are like you said he ascends and most likely becomes a 2nd. Just remember the Alabama D-Linemen that were supposed to go in the 1st round last year ended up falling to the 2nd. So it is kind of up in the air where Bama players land.

    King is rated as a 2nd rounder I personally think he is a bottom of the 1st caliber of player. I think Tankersley is a more realistic option and he is a taller (6' 1") lengthier press man corner which we are looking for. He also did a fantastic job versus some very shifty Auburn receivers during the 1st game of the year.

    Another player that popped on tape to me today was Anthony Walker Jr., ILB, Northwestern. I haven't seen him play this year, but I watched last years tape of him vs. Stanford. He was awesome in zone coverage with great insticts (almost two picks), and man coverage against McCaffery which is not an easy task. Plus he is a very good blitzer, and is active in the run game. He is beginning to become a favorite of mine. I could see him being a great pick in the 2nd.

    i wouldnt read too much into that.  i think pagano would say something to that effect about any player if he was asked

    True that is why I also included that snippet of him saying Morris deserves to be on the roster only to cut him 2 days later. I was trying to say that sometimes he says something, but does something completely different. I am just saying that according to what he said Smith should be a Colt next season.

  15. This is my way too early draft based on need. By the end of the college football season this will be picked apart as players will ascend or descend, but this draft board is worked by need, and player value at THIS time in college football.

    Round 1: Derek Barnett, OLB, Tennessee;

    Alt. Pick: Carl Lawson, OLB, Auburn

    Round 2: Desmond King, CB, Iowa;

    Alt. Pick: Cordrea Tankersley, CB, Clemson

    Round 3: Royce Freeman, RB, Oregon; I put him in the 3rd due to him falling because of other RB talent.

    Alt. Pick: Elijah Hood, RB, North Carolina

    Round 4: Jourdan Lewis, CB, Michigan;

    Alt. Pick: Kendall Beckwith, ILB, LSU

    Round 4(comp): Steven Taylor, OLB, Houston;

    Alt. Pick: Da'Shawn Hand, DE, Alabama

    Round 5: Taco Charlton, DT, Michigan;

    Alt. Pick: Tony Connor, SS, Ole Miss

    Round 6: Isaiah Ford, WR, Virginia Tech

    Alt. Pick: Shock Linwood, RB, Baylor

    Round 7: Kylie Fitts, OLB, Utah;

    Alt. Pick: William Likely III, CB, Maryland

    Can't. I believe they've already passed the time period in which they could reach an injury settlement (I believe it's five days), so now he's just stuck on IR. He can come back after Week 8, I suppose. Doesn't sound like that's in the cards, though.

    Once he's healthy and can clear a physical, I think he'll be waived from IR, and we'll never see him in a Colts uniform again.

    That might be the case we might move on from Smith. However, in a interview about a week and a half ago Pagano said we haven't seen the last of Smith. He also said that Morris did enough to justify a roster spot, and they waived him two or three days later. So I guess it is all up in the air, but I wouldn't be surprised if we retain Smith going into the next offseason.

  17. Just now, krunk said:

    Morrison in coverage is not a good thing

    Exactly, but to be brutally honest none of our linebackers did very well in coverage. I believe Sio was the best followed by McNary, but all got burnt at one point or another.
