  1. This is completely out of the realm of Colts football, but did anyone else watch the Saints vs. Lions game last night? I felt like there were some pretty obvious "bad calls" or "no calls" that worked out in the Saints favor constantly. To me this paralelled the Steelers vs. Seahawks Super Bowl; phantom holding calls, piling up penalties on one team, turning a blind eye, etc. Now, I'm not a Lions suppporter, although I'm happy to see them having success, and I certainly don't have ill feeling toward the Saints, but I am a football fan that like to watch football games unfold without the officiating crew putting their mark on the game.

  2. If he stays out of dodge he'll become the go-to-guy for sure. With Garcon being inconsistent, though much improved, and Wayne and Gonzo's status up in the air, it looks like he may take a good chunk of the workload next season.

  3. If the price is right and the piece fits we make it happen. Look at Vinatieri, Simon, and Stokely. All guys who had multiple teams competing for their services and we went after them aggressively. The same thinking also applies to trading for other players like Booger McFarland or Justin Tryon (who I am still completely shocked about being cut).

  4. He was given a chance to "compete" for a job here last offseason.

It was Reggie Wayne's opinion that we needed to go with Painter, and it was the front offices opinion that we needed to go with Kerry Collins. He flat out OUT-PLAYED both of them! He should be the only quarterback we should keep from our current roster (depending on the status Peyton Manning).

I don't think that one training camp really constitutes as having a chance to even learn the offense. He also didn't have the benefit of a real off-season with the lock-out and everything that went down. I firmly believe that Bill and Chris Polian had a thing or two to do with not giving him a real chance after training camp so that they could "vindicate" themselves with Painter. Collins was just a desperation move in my opinion.

  5. This kid worked like a champ all year long. He didn't have the production that reflected kind of the year he had because of where he sat on the depth chart and the lack of good QB play. It wasn't until Dan Orlovsky came on that Collie started to show up, mainly becuse we were running a lot of 2 receiver sets and going 3-and-out pretty regularly early on. When he was in I always kept my eye on him to see where he was from a performance stand point because of the concussions and all. His blocking was on the same level as Reggie, his routes were tight, and he caught most everything that was catchable. Bottom line; when Peyton comes back, I personally think that their chemistry will pick up right where it left off before eaches respective injuries. Do you agree?

  6. I personally believe that Dan Orlovsky did a phenomenal job, considering the state of the team and his personal situation (living in someone elses home, preparing for triplets, not being with the team all season, etc.). In my opinion, he at least deserves a shot to compete for a job here next season. The players certainly seemed to rally around him...

  7. The fact that Bill thinks Peyton Manning not playing this season was what got him fired shows that he didn't learn his lesson. I guess it's true what they say, at least in Bill Polian's case; You can't teach an old dog new tricks. It's so sad that he's oblivious to the fact that Irsay caught on to what was going on. Bill allowed the team be run into the ground because he was so busy trying to set his son up with a career down the same path as himself. Plus he needs to understand the "Golden Rule"; Treat people how you want to be treated. I'm glad to be moving on from this.

  8. Make no mistake, this was a serious proposal. Peyton has the advantage of growing up with the game of football - all aspects. Unfortunately, his only GM "archetype" is Bill Polian, but that cuts both ways - good and bad. There are other members of the FO that have been "exemplars" for him too.

Peyton can do anything he wants after his career ends as a player, but it is never too early to start planning. His knowledge and love for the game could serve him - and the Colts - very well. The strategic part seems to come naturally to him. We'll see how silly this sounds after 5 or 10 years.

Ok, if you're saying for the future I could see that happening. Peyton majored in Sports Management, so that seems feasible.I took it as you saying he should become our GM now. To me that would just be silly.

  9. Considering the inconsistency across the line all season, the fact that he was playing with an injury, and he faced the vast majority of the best pass rushers in the league, I would say he played pretty well overall. He showed his physical and mental toughness and his commitment as a team player. The future is bright for Anthony Costanzo.

  10. To be completely honest about this topic, the Pro Bowl is a joke to me. It's not about who played better at which position, it's a popularity contest for the most marketable or up-and-coming marketable players. YES! I absolutely believe Robert earned his trip this year AND every other year he's made it. Dwight, as much as I love the guy, didn't perform as well this year. He may have been hampered by an injury unknown to us or maybe the ankle surgery is starting to show it's effects, but I saw him get handled 1 on 1 way too many times this year.

I agree that Angerer deserved it more than an aging Ray Lewis who missed multiple games and got outplayed by his supporting cast. As great as McAfee was this season, Shane Lechler is still in the AFC and Pat will be the 1st person to tell you that Lechler is the Superman of punters. As for Bethea, it's hard to send a safety to the Pro Bowl who's INT's declined this year and, in my opinion, he seemed to play at the same level as the rest of the secondary this year. Meaning that he didn't stick out as "the playmaker" in the secondary.

  11. I am going to clear this topic once and for all, all the Indy faithful who want Luck, typically want Manning as well. Unfortunately that cannot work.. If you tune in to NFL 32, there was Chris Mort putting this issue to rest, and talking about the drama that will unfold this offseason. Mort goes on to say Luck and Manning cannot co-exist, this is not the same situation as Favre and Rodgers, for a multitude of reasons, the placement of the draft pick, the quality of the teams, cap room, and more. I am going to list and explain why Mort was correct, and why I have been saying this all along, that a co-existence is not beneficial for the Colts.

    · Now, lets all understand the packers picked 24th that year, were a playoff team, and were following the best player available trend… If a player who was projected to be a #1 pick falls to your lap at 24, your going to take him! When you take someone at the end of the first or later, if he does not surpass the player in front of him on the depth chart you have the luxury of him sitting and waiting. After all they were a playoff team, the Colts are a two win team!

    · That segues to the next topic, the Colts were a two win team. They were playing without the GOAT at QB, but they team was exposed for the lack of talent Manning has covered for many years! This means that if the Colts take Luck, there are only theoretically 6 other draft picks. Typically rounds 1-3 possibly round 4 are starters, the rest are slow contributers and need parts of their game polished. This means the Colts will have at best 3 picks to address the many holes they have, CB. NT. SS. WLB. DE. G. C. WR. These are all positions where the talent that exists is getting old or there frankly isn’t any talent there.

    · The Colts also have many veteran players due for new contracts, even with the Rookie wage scale reducing what QB’s make, we are still talking about over $20 million dollars invested in one position! It is a waste of resources, that could be used to retain Mathis/Wayne for Manning’s remaining years. Everyone complained about Kerry Collins getting paid to not contribute (I did not like the signing either) this will be that but for FOUR YEARS! Luck sitting and holding a Clipboard for four years eating up cap space that could go to players that will contribute now and even in the future!

    · All indications are Manning is slowly but surely recovering from his neck surgery, with all the articles about him throwing passes with normal Manning like zing within 30 yards. You all know what I am talking about the 80% healed Manning articles. Obviously if Manning isn’t healthy come April it is a no brainer to take Luck. But all indications are Manning is recovering, and when he is healthy, why wouldn’t he finish out the last four years of his contract? He was on pace to break Brett Favre’s consecutive game streak. We are talking about Manning who was the games iron man, who didn’t take big shots, and was smart to get out of the way of big shots and duck when necessary. If healthy he will at a minimum finish out his contract!

    · Manning cannot be traded like everyone constantly says. Irsay would have to pay Manning come March his bonus which is $28 Million. Why would Irsay pay Peyton $28 Million and then turn around and trade him? That means Irsay would be paying for what value Peyton would bring to the Colts in a trade. And teams know that to get Manning all they have to do is wait for Manning to be released and they can hope to win over his services. So they aren’t going to rush the issue and give up their entire draft for the next two years, or whatever people think the Colts would get. The only value from a trade the Colts have is trading the rights to the #1 pick for Andrew Luck. That’s where it is said the Colts could get at minimum 3 #1’s and 2 #2’s!

    · Manning’s contract is not going to be drastically re-worked to fit he and Luck, because as many say “Manning owes the Colts!” Really? Manning owes the Colts? Manning put this team on the map for the last decade! Manning told Irsay this past offseason, “listen don’t make me the highest paid player in the league, put the pieces around me to win a Super Bowl.” Irsay thought this was nonsense and that he would stick to his own decision to make Manning the highest paid player in the league. Irsay said in the post Manning contract press conference, we finished it, I am done with it, I am not going back to it. Now why would Manning restructure, to fit a young kid on the team, when that doesn’t benefit his quest for Lombardi’s? Would Manning restructure to fit Wayne and Mathis, maybe, maybe if Irsay would go back into the contract. But he will not restructure to fit Luck, yes he is a team player, but he could be outright released, and he knows that. And that may be the better decision for Manning and the team going forward.

    · Andrew Luck does not want to sit under Manning, just like Manning does not want to mentor a kid. He wants to win Lombardi’s! The faults of this team are out, Manning is going to be on a quest to take this team to the promise land to show how good he really is! Luck would only hinder that, for all of the above mentioned reasons. Manning could possibly deliver an ultimatum to Irsay, and I think Irsay will side with Manning. All the articles of Archie about how Luck is ready and should play and how Manning agrees and doesn’t want to hinder that are true articles! But believe me, Manning wants Luck to start from day one elsewhere! And Luck doesn’t want to sit under Manning. His post game interview the other night spoke volumes of how he wants to play right away. His tone and body language stood out as someone who was just speaking what he had to, without looking like a Diva before taking an NFL snap! Who would come out and say I don’t want to go to the Colts and sit under Manning that far before the draft? Especially when Manning isn’t quiet 100% right now! That means if he doesn’t fully recover Luck would be burning bridges before even crossing them!

    · The problem is by having both, you are kind of playing for the future, but hanging on to the past in Manning, while sort of competing for Super Bowls. Manning is good enough to lead the team back into the playoffs on his own.. But I still see this team as a few players short of getting back to Super Bowl contention. Having Manning around also means veterans will be retained, and this will be a very similar roster to last years. Obviously that doesn’t infuse the team with young or even impactful talent (the problem with this team in the first place), which choosing one or the other would bring. Going for the future and taking Luck in cutting ties with Manning means, freed up cap space to get free agents, and many of the older players leaving the Colts. It means rebuild mode for the next four to five seasons with Luck! Money to pursue free agents and continue to put pieces in place to make Luck successful. Trading the pick means infusing the team with young talent, while keeping some of the current veteran players. So that the team can compete again for Super Bowls, and have a good strong young nucleus of players from all the draft picks post Manning making the transition much smoother for the future QB. You cannot be successful by blending the two together. In conclusion, it is going to be one or the other folks. Having both does not make any sense other than Colts fans dreaming! Peyton will either be a Colt next year or Andrew Luck will be a Colt. To have both would be the most foolish move any Owner/GM could possibly make! I want Peyton as a Colt myself, and the Luck pick traded. Every year there is talent out there at the QB position. His value would help rebuild this team short and long term. Give a better nucleus of talent for the QB to take over post Manning. It’s one or the other folks..

I couldn't have said it any better myself. Well put.

  12. Hey

Complete newbie here as far as the forum goes but I have to speak my truth - Indiana native living in New York but dedicated Colts fan since I was 6 in 1958 - I am curious - why is everyone setting their sights so low? Am I missing all the chat about the possibility of Jim Harbaugh? C'mon, first of all he is a ring of honor Colt, his brother in law coaches those remarkable Hoosiers, so family is close by in the area - and don't you realistically think it would be his dream to return to the team he actually played so remarkably for? Also, and most obviously - he was the one who had a huge hand in nurturing Andrew Luck into his current greatness at Stanford. Do you not think he would be over the top excited about being re-united with Luck and be involved with Peyton? Forget Fisher, let's set our sights at the top, my money is on the fact that Mr. Irsay has a plan WAY beyond Jeff Fisher....

Prove me wrong - as soon as the 49ers are one and done Harbaugh is on our doorstep grinning along with Irsay - it's so obviously a perfect fit...... And Jim can bring whoever he wants along for the incredibly ride....

While the ties you've made make it sound like a marriage made in heaven, you've overlooked that Harbaugh is a 1st year head coach that turned the 49ers around in the period of one off-season. There's absolutely no way he gets canned!!!!

  13. Are you seriously gonna try to blame that on Chris Polian? lol.... thats like a groupy being sent on stage to take the hits from flying tomatos... if anything the players CP added HELPED the colts.... players like anderson, brayton, nevis, AC, sims... guys like that... i agree with the move of firing him though, dont want any Polian on the payroll.

There's still one more Polian on the staff. His name escapes me at the moment, but I believe he deals in personnel though.

  14. The 3-4, just like any base defense, is a fad. It used to be the 4-6, then everybody ran a 4-3, and now the 3-4. Nowadays a lot of defenses are running a 5-2, which in essence is a 3-4. Defenses are going to change from year to year based on what offenses are doing, and they'll find new ways to try to be deceptive (which is why teams are running a 3-4, 5-2, or doing that wandering Nickel package).

Switching schemes to one that doesn't fit our personnel is ludicrous. This isn't Madden, it's real life, and in real life you make realistic decisions.

  15. I am so thankful that Jim Irsay made the right decision in choosing Peyton over Polian(s). Everyone who watches Colts games and followed all of the happenings these past few years (since Tony left), that there was a growing rift between Peyton and the Polians. I thank Bill for everything he's done for us, but running our team into the ground for the sake of setting his son up is where I draw the line (and apparently where Jim Irsay does too). We all knew that Bill didn't respect our fan-base anyway. Out with the old, in with the new!
