  1. To watch what was once a top tier Special Teams unit reduced to this is the result of poor coaching of technique and fundamentals. The specialists have all taken a step backwards and we just look outclassed anymore. Bubba clearly doesn’t have this unit ready to go.

  2. I’ve seen it all season long. We’ll have the lead, come out passing on 1st and 2nd second down trying to get cute, go into 3rd and long and punt it away. It’s getting pretty old at this point. We’ve got one of the better run blocking lines in the league. Why wouldn’t you at least get the clock running and give the defense a rest?! Especially when we’re struggling to stop the opposition!!!

  3. How quickly everyone forgets that we were down to starting our 4th, 5th and 6th CB’s for the majority of last season. Robinson was banged up last season and couldn’t handle life on the outside when called upon. It was unfortunate things went the way they did with him. He’s clearly a very talented guy when used properly.

Not sure how many additional picks qualify as "stocking up", but you aren't going to get much more than an extra 2nd and 3rd rounder, or a 2nd and a 4th, this year by moving down and taking someone else's 1st rounder, depending on how far down you drop. Getting a 1st this year plus a 1st next year is also a crapshoot. You never really know where next year's 1st will be.

Extra picks are extra picks. Honestly, how many picks and where the picks lay all depend on the trade partner(s).

We were in a sub package, 4-2-5, more than a 3-4 anyway.

With he personnel we have now, we’re actually suited better for the 4-3 simply because we really didn’t have the OLBs you need to apply pressure in a 3-4.

My point exactly! We spent the vast majority of our season in Nickel. Most teams do this nowadays to give more help on the backend in pass coverage. We’re seeing larger defensive backs more frequently as well because teams want a DB that can still come down and play the run while holding up against the punishment.

  6. But to further answer your questions, the only effect a 4-3 or 3-4 front would be where the LB’s are coming from to drop into coverage. The defensive backs have their own separate coverage calls. The press man, man, zone, and zone press calls all vary based upon the playcall and gameplan.

If we make the switch to a 4-3, which players that we currently have will just not fit into the scheme?

In the 4-3, what effect, if any, does it create from the backend? The safeties and cb’s?

Is it more or less normal for press man to be accompanied with a certain scheme or is press and zone just a product of the DC overall scheme?

I will assume we would run more hybrid type 4-3 3-4 schemes until we draft a few cycles towards the defense we really want to dedicate to. I just don’t want to see any version that is a slow bleed defense, the dreaded prevent type or the poorly executed Tampa two type.

The 4-3 and 3-4 are just defensive fronts. The fact of the matter is that this isn’t as prevalent as it used to be in the NFL, what with most teams resorting to hybrid fronts and about 75% of defensive playcalls operating out of variations of Nickel formations. Personally, I wouldn’t read too much into who fits and who doesn’t.

  8. Honestly, I think it’s a little unfair to say Doyle isn’t “#1 material” based off of last season alone. He definitely had his struggles early on with the dropsies and some ball security issues, but he toughed out a rough situation and still managed to have a statistically sound season. I think this next season will be very telling about what Jack Doyle can do under a new coach and a new offense.

I have to be the buzzkill here, sorry. You can't judge a player off of a highlight reel. They never will show anything bad. You need to watch full game tape to see everything. So I can't really take this seriously. Yes, Chubb is a good football player, but in actual full game tapes you will see him taking plays off every so often and I would rather have a player like Marcus Davenport as an EDGE guy in the second round seeing as he took maybe only one play off all season. It's an effort issue, and you don't see that in highlight reels!

I completely understand your stance on this. The highlight reel is meant to showcase the players abilities, not analyze his entire body of work. Bottom line is, sure it’s all pre-combine/draft hype, but the kid has a high motor, prototypical size and speed, and very versatile skill set.
