  1. With all the debate over who to draft in the first round I would like to add another alternative.  If Nelson is available at 6 why not draft him and either pick up another guard or RT in the top of the 2nd or trade up and get the guy we want at the back of the first.

I believe eve we are two starters away from an above average OL.  With the depth this year I say we take advantage and get that side of the trench fixed.

  2. I am a fan of Smith and love his production. I think he will be a great pro. Edmunds is tempting but Barkevious Mingo and Rolando McClain we’re both linebackers with high ceilings that never fully reached them for different reasons.

My my vote is to take Nelson at #6 and package a pick with an early 2nd to move up and take another guard like Wynn. Why not insert two starting guards that can fix the interior of the line. We would be one starter away from an above average line.

... We had Manning for 5 years where he was pretty much the only player on the field... In 09 the defense and special teams were so terrible one game Manning had the ball for a whopping 15 minutes the entire game and he still won...  He literally willed us to a super bowl that year.  So yes a QB can mask 52 players if he's good enough.

Although possible, it’s highly unlikely.  Manning is one of the best QBs to ever play the game and it’s unfair to expect Luck to play at that level. Luck is an above average QB and as this roster grows we should become better.

A reminder...   the Philadelphia Eagles just won the Super Bowl with their back-up quarterback.    Something NO ONE predicted was even possible.

I'm not saying Brissett is as good as Nick Foles.  I'm only saying having a good back up is very important to any NFL team.    The Colts have a good  back up on a cheap rookie contract with two more years to go.    We need Brissett this year.   We can still trade him next year if we want.

The Patriots, Steelers, Cowboys, Redskins, Colts and Rams all won a Super Bowl with their back up QBs. I think there are other teams but those are the ones I can think of right now. Keep the kid. He will only get better.  We need talent on our roster.

What is the downside of this move?   Spending $7 mil on a tight end who catches 50-60 passes every year?

Now then.. What is the upside?

That is a good point. He does have more upside than Swoope. Maybe he pulls a Jerry Hughes and blossoms in the right scheme and we catch lightning in a bottle. Worst situation he is Dwayne Allen and can’t stay healthy and continues to drop passes.  We have a really bad roster and even tho I don’t care for the signing, it was good to pick him up and I believe we have become bette with him on our roster.

    So he's that bad?

I didn’t say he was bad...I said I don’t see him producing enough to justify 7.5 million a year.  I literally typed that, don’t see how it’s confusing.  He had 50+ catches for 500+ yards.  Obviously he has talent he is in the NFL. However, I don’t think he is producing like a top 10 pick in his 4th year should and again...I don’t see him producing enough to justify 7.5 million dollars a year.

On a a side note tho, we have plenty of cap room and I have no idea how the new staff will use the TEs.  Could be a great signing...I hope it is.

If he gets 7.5 mil a year, then he deserved it because that's max value...

He deserves whatever he can earn no matter what I think. I’m happy for him to get a chance and make some great money. I don’t like the signing but Ballard is in charge and I have no idea how Reich will use him. I do believe the TE for the eagles tore it up so maybe there is a big emphasis.  Guess I will wait and see

  8. The colts are being frugal and stockpiling draft picks just like they should of done in Lucks rookie and 2nd year. However, no one expected us to go 11-5 his first three years and it accelerated the process. Created premature FA signings before we were able to establish a real core of players. All the bad teams will draft 9-12 players each draft for 2-3 years and if half of them stick they will supplement with free agency and become contenders. We never had the chance to do that and our barren roster is evidence of it.

I love the way Ballard is going about this and I hope we trade 1-2 of the 2nd rounders to move back a few spots and gain 2019 picks. We will have the cap flexibility to sign our own and add the few FA pieces it requires to be playing to win in January.

Colts fans abs have been spoiled with our success from the Manning years and the first 3yrs of Luck. We need as much ammo as we can to get more players like Freeny, Mathis, Clark, Wayne, Addai, Bethea, Brackett, Harrison, Saturday, Sanders etc via the draft or UDFA. Those were homegrown players and created the core that last.

  9. I’ve mentioned to a few of my friends future draft picks would need to be involved.  You just can’t have 4-5 really good players needing new contracts in the same year. This would require great drafting but Seattle, Jacksonville and kinda the Cowboys were able to turn around quickly with a few drafts.  We are seeing with Seattle it was expensive to keep the core together and the offensive line suffered bc of it. Now that team is being broke up and I’m not sure if they are reloading or doing a small rebuild.

  10. I’m going to side with freedom to choose on this one. McDaniels should have honored his word in a moral sense but it’s his choice not to.  We do not have a right to his services even if he temporarily agreed to it.  No punishments should be handed out and no rule changes should be made. It’s an unique situation the unfortunately didn’t play out well for us Colts fan.

The bandaid has been tore off and the sting is fading. I wish him the best bc it appears he had his own set of issues to deal with. It’s a business and he didn’t want to work here.  Nothing more. I’m a business owner and have dealt with prospective employees changing their minds. It’s ok. I was doing fine before them and will continue successfully after them. The Colts will rebound and this will be forgotten.  It really is not a big deal...our new coach should be our focus.

  11. Didn’t we run a “hybrid” scheme under Pagano?  I know the 3-4 was our base but I would like to see us dumb things down and try to put players in a position to succeed. These exotic defenses that ask players to do multiple jobs is nothing More than a coach outsmarting himself.  Line a player up to do what he does best and when you get the guy who can do more, then you use him accordingly.

  12. Watched the post game interview and speech in the locker room.  Pagano has known he was leaving and did so with tons of class.  It’s time for change at coach but the Colts are losing a great person.

  13. It will take awhile if Luck is not back to normal.  One of my favorite writers was John Clayton, he consistently said good teams find 2-3 starters out of each draft.  With how bare bones this roster is we are looking at 3-4 years before possibly being super bowl contenders.  However, if Brady declines and Rothlisberger retires the AFC could be wide open. We are in great position to be contenders in the middle of Lucks prime.

  14. Obviously Vontae quit on the team for being shopped around or demoted. Ballard making an example of probably our best defender is outstanding.  Hopefully we can continue to right the ship.  We just need to start hitting on our 1-3 draft picks.  They either don’t preform or often injured.

  15. Ballard not trading away Davis, Gore, Moncreif etc for whatever we could get was very smart.

First off, what free agent would want to sign with us knowing we have a track record of shipping them off their last year?  These players don't want to move and be away from their families just for 8 games.

2nd, you don't quit mid season. It's already circus level with uncertainty surrounding Luck's shoulder and a lame duck coach. If the front office mails it in then people stop going to games and watching.  This is a business and salvaging what fan happiness you can during a bad season is very important.

Most fans are not like us that read forums and are casual at best. If you gut the team most people will stop watching bc they feel it is pointless bc the team just quit.  You lose enough casual watchers when you are bad. No need to turn it into a dumpster fire.

Super long time lurker here so maybe my opinion doesn't mean much but the whining is ridiculous.

  16. You guys really need to let this thing play out. Stop with all the doom & gloom threads about the interior line that none of us know what it'll be yet. At least wait until weeks 7-9ish to give a review of it. My goodness people, Rome wasn't built overnight you know

    :Gaah:

I agree 100%!!! I have read on and on over numerous threads people stating how we need to finally address the OL due to Polian neglecting it. Well, we are and I love the prospects and depth we are finally building. Anyone that has played organized football beyond high school knows that it takes time and also a bit of trial and error. It is what it is so as fans we need to accept it. Its coming and we will have a physical line that plays a power man scheme and controls the line of scrimmage. I personally can't wait to watch the progress this year and the following. Finally some smash mouth football with a great QB and big receivers. Yeah buddy!

  17. A great read my brother! I love how you ranked health as the first attribute! I played semi-pro ball for a few years and regular fans just don't understand. I worked out, ate right, trained and practiced coaching and it didn't matter when I started getting hurt. Our bodies start saying no at different times even when we have the skill and athleticism to be a top performer. Its a freak play here or a set back in recovery there between us playing a full season or missing half. Everyone wants to say we are injury prone but it was just bad circumstances that led to us not playing. I have returned from injuries and played the next week and also missed a few games from a simple pull of a muscle to regain form after a year off from an ACL tear. Its a game and anything can happen.

  18. I don't see why not if its at a bargain while he chases another ring. I wouldn't mind him playing towards the end of the season and the playoffs if he is the better option over Howell. However, if we are solid at safety and Grigs and Pagano like what we have then I will take their word for it. They are the professionals and know what they are doing.
