  1. Not that we should, but I think since we had so much excess cap prior to the draft, and the fact he is still available, would it be worth to pay him a few million to have a 1-2-3 of Gore Charles Turbin?  As a short term fix, anyhow...

Since we went all out OL last year, then focus on the whole defense this offseason, we could afford to make this move and let Gore retire have Charles for 1-2 years and a 1st rd RB next year fill that gap!

It may be an unpopular idea, and a bold move, but why not?  Would it really make a difference giving him a short term deal?

  2. Ballard did say, he would make picks that may not be that popular.  Also, at positions that may not be of high need.  I certainly have mixed feelings, but got to trust him, I suppose!  With Geathers/Green, and Butler moving to S, I definitely would've wanted to trade up and get Lattimore or Barnett.  Or even D. Cook!  Hooker is a very talented player, so I suppose it is okay, but definitely not an IDEAL pick...

This article is saying the Colts are ready to not only make Luck the highest paid player in football, which is ludicrous, but they are also ready to give him the highest guaranteed contract in NFL history.  $98 MILLION of the entire contract ($200 M or more) guaranteed.  .

Look, I love Luck as much as anyone, but even at his best, he is not the best player in football.  To pay him this much is absolute insanity.  He is a turnover machine, and has yet to deliver what I would call a truly great season. He had a very good one in 2014, but not great.  And the thing is, Irsay almost seems like he is giddy to pay him that much.  He seems proud of it.  Makes no sense to me.

If it costs that much to retain Luck, trade him.  We could get a kings ransom from someone.  Paying that much to one player, no matter how good (and he is not even THAT GOOD yet) is a sure way to having what we had with Manning.  It doesn't work in the long run.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/sounds-andrew-luck-going-contract-160719540.html

First things first, Luck HAS NOT established himself as THE BEST QB in the league!  That doesn't mean, he doesn't deserve to be the highest paid in the league!  He had one of the worst OL's in the league his first 4 seasons, and therefore no running game, yet he still produced at an elite level, while things were going well!   That in itself says HE DOES deserve to be the highest paid player in the NFL.  Especially now that he has a solid OL.

You can't just trade him because players with his potential only come around once in a decade!  I'm not too keen on paying him 25M/yr either, but I would rather pay him that than a 2nd tier QB 18M/yr that CANT carry our team!  I firmly believe with the focus on the OL and new coaching staff, our team is set up for success (in the future).  Perhaps not til we get a couple young pass rushers, but we are heading in the right direction... Only 1 team wins the SB each yr, and only 1 team represents each conference in the big game.  With Peyton stepping down, and Brady/Belicheck drawing to the end of their careers as well, the talent on this team only getting better, surely will take us to the top, if we stick to the process!

My main point is you can't dump a player like Luck just because he hasn't won a SB yet.  Great things are yet to come, if you give it time.  That's the nature of sports.  Obviously, NO team wins championships year in and year out.  There are dynastys that come about, but they're few and far between.  You must look at the big picture, and understand the nature of sports as a whole to appreciate how fortunate we are as fans of the Colts to get a once in a lifetime QB back to back as Indianapolis has!

I do like where we are going with the line.  They can end up being really good when it's all said and done.

Give them 3-4 years, we will have one of the better OL's in the league.. but certainly with drafting the players we did AND hiring Philben, we are ensuring success for years to come@

It's kind of funny that I got toasted pretty good in this forum earlier about wanting to take a center in the first round. I think it was an excellent move IMO.

TBH I thought Kelly was a very realistic option for our #1 pick.  However, I didn't know the Colts were that high on him!  Best pick since the 2012 class IN ANY ROUND IMO.  Certainly solidifies the whole left side of the line!  Also, gives us plenty of completion within the right side, and allows for depth from whoever doesn't win the starting job for RG RT.  With Philben taking over helm, and dedication through the draft, I have 100% confidence our OL will protect Luck, and give our run game the boost it needed to be an elite group!

Truly the offense can carry the team now, even neglecting the LB position (because we have sufficient CB's/S) to lockdown opposing WR's!  The front 3/rotational players is solid enough to create sufficient pressure up the middle to contain the opposing offense.

Just take a look around the internet at all the haters who don't even think the Colts will make the playoffs this year. It's astounding how many people have lost faith in the franchise after a year riddled with injuries. They must not have considered how we still almost won the division (Read Here). I'm confident that the Colts still have a strong hold on the division, and even that we will make the Super Bowl. Don't believe me?? Here's 5 reasons why!

    1) Healthy Luck = Healthy Chances

Looking back at last season, where we went 8-8 and didn't make the playoffs for the first time since Andrew Luck arrived, there is still reason to be positive. Luck is 3 for 3 on playoff appearances, not counting last year when he only played 7 of our 16 games. In his first three years, he led us to 11-5 records each season. That being said, I feel great about our chances of making the playoffs, even with the division rapidly improving. If Luck stays healthy (which he should behind a partially revamped line), who can't we beat??? Added to this the fact that Luck only played one game under new OC Rob Chudzinski (a win against the Super Bowl Champs), and you get a recipe for success!

    2) Chuuuuuuud!!!!!!

Let's fly back a bit to mid-season last year. Sitting 3-5 after a devastating loss in OT to Carolina in a game we could have won, the front office decided to fire OC Pep Hamilton. This was quite a shocking move to make halfway through the year, with many people believing we were just giving up. Enter interim OC Rob Chudzinski. In his first week with the Colts, with a semi-healthy Luck and a game against the best defense in the NFL (and widely considered one of the best ever), every odd was stacked against him. What ended up happening was that we caught a glimpse of just how powerful the Colts offense could be. Luck threw for 252 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 21 of 39 completed passes without an interception, while also having a passer rating of 98.4, his best of the season. Gore scrambled for 83 yards and a TD on 28 carries, and the ball was very well distributed, with 4 players over 3 receptions. Luck only got sacked once, showing the offensive line was improved under Chud's quick-moving scheme. After that huge win over the eventual Super Bowl Champions, Chud soared. Over the rest of the year, he lead the crippled Colts offense to a 5-3 record, 4-3 without Luck. And who can forget his preparation of Josh Freeman and Ryan Lindley in the regular season finale against the Titans. With Chud's high-octane offense and a healthy Luck next year, the sky is the limit for this offense.

    3) Finally, a Smart Draft by Irsay

Now I don't want to knock Irsay at all. He's a great man with good intentions. He's just not very good when it comes to drafts. This year feels different, though. Usually, with only 8 draft picks, Owners and GMs tend to get as many playmakers as possible. Many people have frowned upon the Colts getting 4 offensive linemen in the draft, as they aren't exactly "playmakers". When you stop watching the game and watch the line, though, that's when you begin to see the real "playmakers". Providing huge blocks, preventing sacks, running their hearts out down field to try to block anybody they can to extend the play, linemen make up the heart of big plays. While the ball carrier gets all the credit for making the play happen, the behemoth men up front quietly rejoin the huddle, hoping they can get the chance to make it happen again. Their pride comes from knowing how they set up a block to extend the run or stopped a pass rush to allow the quarter back to make the magic happen. That's why I think Irsay got the real "playmakers" in the draft. Kelly will be an immediate upgrade, while Clark has the potential to be a stud once fully developed. Haeg and Blythe also have potential to be good starters in a few years. Irsay did a great job this year, and with everyone saying that we need to protect Luck, I'm surprised how well he accomplished it. Great job, Irsay!!

    4) Undrafted Pass Rushers (Oh, and a drafted one)

Going into the draft, many people saw pass rush as one of our top two positions of need. They were right, but they are overreacting to how we didn't get on until the last round. We still have a starting duo next year, and with the collective 200+ sacks between Cole and Mathis, the rookies will learn a ton this year. Don't forget that the rookie LB group accumulated a combined total of 33.5 sacks in the 2015 season (and thats only among 5 players). Plus, the recent story about the Colts Pass Rush for 2016 reveals that through the last 6 weeks of 2015, we led the league with 21 sacks! The other overlooked addition in the offseason is Hassan Ridgeway, who totaled 6 sacks in 2014, Add the Okine move to OLB with 5.5 CFL sacks and we have a young group with 45 sacks in one year of college or the CFL. We are going to get after the QB this year, as well as many years to follow.

    5) Our Division

Yes, the AFC South made a huge statement in the offseason with some big name acquisitions. Yes, the division does look a whole lot better than past years on paper. What you have to remember about this is our last offseason. We made huge waves in free agency, leading many to believe we would be the best team in the NFL. And if you recall, everyone was saying we looked "so much better on paper!" Boy were they wrong. This is the AFC South, where nothing ever seems to go right for anyone. The division won't blow up like everyone is saying. The Jags aren't going to win 12 plus games just because of Myles Jack, Jalen Ramsey, and a much improved defense. Even with that, they only went 5-11 last year. They can't get that much better with a few players. The Texans went out to grab Brock Osweiler and Lamar Miller in free agency, and rounded out some rough edges on offense in the draft. Yes, they have JJ Watt. But will this put them out of reach for a team with one of the most high-octane offenses in the NFL. Doubtfully. And the Titans are going to do well a few years from now, but currently, they aren't anywhere threatening. With Luck back healthy, a better line, and Chud, we should go back to sweeping the division easily.

Thanks for reading. This took me so long to write up so I hope you all enjoy! All you have to do now is believe! Here We Come, Super Bowl 51!!! GO BLUE!!!

Hold the phone!  I don't think for a second we should be a "favorite" to be in the SB conversation!  However, I'm certainly not on the doom and gloom bandwagon!  Only time will tell how this team will fare.  I for one, am fairly optimistic!  I genuinely think we are headed in the right direction (especially with the revamped coaching staff and the dedication to the OL).  Of course we neglected on the pass rush, but I can honestly say, that is okay!  OL is BY FAR WAY MORE IMPORTANT, despite what any analyst or fan thinks.  If you have a QB such as Luck, and need to cater to his needs, OL is the second most important thing.  We do have playmakers at WR TE & RB!  However, none of that will reach full potential if the OL can't do it's job.  For once, Grigson/Irsay sold out, to accomplish what needed to be done, first and foremost (after the 2012 draft class) and that is, solidy the OL!!

On defense, there are some playmakers.  Vontae is a top tier corner!  Last season, wasn't a good example because of the state of the franchise and personal injuries.  Now we have Robinson, Butler, and perhaps D Smith could even step up!  I will take it to the bank our CB's will get the job done.  In the S position, I believe Adams still has a decent season left in him.  Hopefully Geathers can build on where he left off, then the S out of Clemson can step up in a season or 2.  Pass rush wise, it isn't looking good.  Have no fear because truth be told the front 3 will create pressure!  With Anderson and Jones coming back, along with a new DT they will have a solid rotation.  People neglect the front 3 created the most pressure in the league the last few games of the season (w/o jones and Anderson to say the least)

Next draft MUST focus on LB's (outside and inside), because they are all old.  I would say, take the same approach as they did this season with the OL.  Definitely at that time the Colts would be an overwhelming favorite in the AFC.  The updated coaching staff being in their 2nd year.  Luck and company being in the midst of their prime, and a few young contributers on the OL/LB corp.  IMO, sure recipe for success!

Are you read for this?        We're predicted to finish 7-9 in 3rd place in our division.

Houston is predicted to win at 8-8.    Then J'Ville, the Colts and the Titans all at 7-9.

    A.    They don't like our defense.    6 starters over 30 is a bad sign.

    B.    Luck has yet to live up to the hype for them.    Whether it's because of not a good enough supporting cast or better coaching,  they expect to see more from Luck.

    Here's the write-up......

    AFC South

    1. Houston Texans: 8-8 (8.0 mean wins; SOS: 25)
    2. Jacksonville Jaguars: 7-9 (7.4 mean wins; SOS: 22)
    3. Indianapolis Colts: 7-9 (7.1 mean wins; SOS: 21)
    4. Tennessee Titans: 7-9 (6.6 mean wins; SOS: 32)

Our forecast once again sees the AFC South as the division nobody wants to win. Just 1.4 mean wins separate the four teams, making this a real toss-up.

With Andrew Luck hopefully healthy for all 16 games, it sure seems like we should go back to favoring the Colts to return to dominating a weak division. But our projection system is accounting here for the fact that the Colts' offense wasn't very good even when Luck was on the field last season. Subjectively, we might explain away Luck's Week 1-3 performance as an early-season slump, and we might explain away his Week 6-8 performance as coming back too soon from his first injury. Objectively, our projection system sees that the Colts would have finished 20th in offensive DVOA even if we only counted games with Luck in the lineup. Meanwhile, the Colts will probably have the oldest defense in the league, generally an indicator of decline. Six projected starters will be 30 or older, as will pass-rush specialist Robert Mathis and nickelback Darius Butler.

Projections don't mean ish... Look at projections for the Panthers (NFC Champs) last season!  All of that is laughable.  Take it with a grain of salt.  I look for overall talent and the coaching staff as the main indication of how a team will perform.  Just because the Colts fell apart last season means absolutely NOTHING, other than they didn't live up to expectations last season.  How has Houston improved?  New QB?  Brock Oseweiler is God's gift to Earth or something, I suppose!  IMO he is avg QB. That means they still are in control?  Hardly!

I would agree with Jacksonville improving, but to say all teams will be within 1 game and Houston on top, my opinion is as good as the next!

  8. Let's be real for a minute... Jags are on the rise, but certainly aren't a team to beat!  They haven't established themselves one bit.  Just because you build off last season, sign a few high profile players, and a couple new draft picks doesn't mean it turns you into a favorite.  Now I wouldn't count them out, but I don't think they will win the division.  They should compete within, but at this point it's up for grabs.  There is not hands down favorite of the AFC South.

    My predicition

    Cots 11-5

    Jags 9-7

    Texans 8-8

    Titans 6-10

IMO this is the last year ANYBODY will speak out against the AFC South being a weak division, all teams are poised with potential to rise!  No teams will be the laughing stock of the NFL, and every team has something going for them in a positive direction.  Not just because I'm a Colts fan, but  they are the most experience/talented overall, they should be the best team (especially with a revamped coaching staff)

These lists are always terrible. Obviously can't take into account who is actually playing. No one thought playing us was an easy win last year, until we lost our best player for most of the year of course.

I do fully expect a close loss to SD and the usual Pitt beating.

It's sad that we always struggle with SD no matter how their season is going and the usual Pittsburg beatdown.  This time it happens on primetime television.  Hopefully most of the nation is either sleeping from the turkey or (early black Friday shopping) lol JK.

I know right? I always laugh when so many pundits who never played a down of football in real life act like our division is full of creampuffs & lackluster rivals. It is what it is...The perception I mean.

Thank you for saying that BP85. No team ever wins any game on paper.

Especially now with each team's FA.  Although I believe the Texans are getting too much hype from their moves, they still got a little better.  Jax kind of scares me now that they've added more pieces to the puzzle and beat the socks off us last year.  Titans got Murray, but more importantly in the future with them trading their pick, they will get extra high picks, which could result in some impact players.  Mariota had a pretty good year as well.  They're definitely on the up to say the least.  This division could be closer to the top of the AFC in the next 2 or 3 years.

  12. It's a sigh of relief that we picked up Robinson, however I don't think he is going to be as good as we hoped in the #2 spot.  Either way it's an upgrade over Toler.  Robinson is mostly a slot guy which confuses me because don't we still have Butler (eventhough he isn't that good on the outside)?  I guess we got him because he was a solid corner with some starting experience, a familiar coach, and one of the last few affordable options...

Smith didn't look very good in TC and Pre season, but that doesn't surprise me as often young CB's tend to struggle.  With the injury it was a further setback.  I believe by year 3 he will definitely be able to contend for the starting job with Robinson.  At that point Butler is probably the odd man out.  No need for 2 good slot corners, especially if they're trying to develop Mitchell as well.

With the same position coach as Robinson had last year coming over from SD (Williams) and Chuck focusing more on the defense (including his so called specialty DB's), this position group should start picking up some slack.  Hopefully Mitchell and Smith get developed as well.

  13. I think it's too early to tell, because the draft and TC will dictate this situation.  However, we all know the coaching staff and Irsay are excited about Good.  So tentatively I believe he will get the go ahead assuming he doesn't do anything to make them think otherwise AND the Colts don't draft a RT because it was one of their BPA on the board.

Honestly, I don't think our O-Line is in that bad of shape if we can draft 2 solid lineman, in which the Center must be starting material from the beginning!  AC and Mewhort are locks on the left side of the line.  Coaches keep saying they're focusing on the interior line.  Reading between the lines, backup for Mewhort, a starting C, and somebody who solidifies the RG position (can be done in several ways).  We know the staff is very comfortable as Reitz being the plug n play guy, so that leads me to believe, Good is favored for the RT position.  Reitz can do all but play C (who knows they might try him out there lol JK).  I wasn't ever really to high on Thornton, but I do believe he will compete for the starting RG job with Reitz.  Thornton is fine, but has consistency and durability issues.  If Thornton wins, Good is solid and we draft a starting caliber C, along with another potential G later, (with the help of Philben's new system) I believe our OL is not too bad.  I realize that is a lot of if's, it is doable. You must remember we do have 2 nice blocking TE's in Allen and Doyle.

Worst case scenario, we only get 1 starting OL in the draft (hopefully a C), and Good isn't okay to start, so Reitz is our RT. A few adjustments still allow us to have Thornton or Good starting at RG with quality depth.  Also Holmes/Harrison as backup for C/LG positions.  By all means I am confident switching to ZBS and having one of the best in the game Philben, as the OL coach, the overall performance will improve!

  14. To be clear... You can go one way or another!  Categorizing last year only, or career overall.  It isn't wise to blend them together.  As it is impossible to judge players between era's also.

That being said (Last year), Vontae in the top 5 NO

Overall Career (in comparision to people in the game NOW), Vontae in the top 5 YES

I do look for him to have a much better season, especially if we can get a pass rusher in the draft, and the front 3 can stay healthy.

  15. Fans honestly believe a RB in the 1st round will solve problems?  Trent was a HUGE prospect and we got him in his 2nd season (#3 overall... Trashed).  This team does NOT need to spend a top 3 (round) pick on an overrated position, like RB.  A dominant OL will make an average QB or RB look good.  It's much harder for a GREAT RB to make an average (or below), OL look good.  This is the NFL, not College.  RB's don't brush off 4-6 tackles regularly as they take it to the house.

This draft has ALOT of good OL going early in the draft.  I don't care if its C RG or RT, but we need one of them (unless there is a fantastic pass rusher available, in which there isn't many from the beginning).  We have some quality backups on the OL if we get 2 lineman early in the draft.  Reitz and Thornton are what they are.  Solid backups, although Reitz IMO could start and we would be okay.  Goode on the other hand isn't quite ready.  He would be fine as a backup though.

Protecting Luck is the #1 priority, whether you like it or not!  Especially if Irsay plans on shelling out 120M.  This team isn't going anywhere without him.  Gore can grind out 1000 yards IF we have a solid OL, and the backup can easily get an additional 500 (KEYWORD:  IF)!  However, an elite back might get us only 1300 yards if he were to have a superb season.  Our offense is built around Andrew and the pass game.  HINT: we DON'T NEED a 1st RD. RB to carry us.  If we don't have an OL that WILL protect Luck, production of the total offense will be worse than if we had a stellar RB.

    Priorities:

    1 OL

    1 OLB

    1 OL

then perhaps a RB in the 4th or 5th round

Personally I would wait until next year to spend a high draft pick on a RB.  After we get a grip on the new ZBS and offense...

  16. I'm puzzled because so many fans on here are expecting mediocrity next season.  With Pagano, Luck, and Grigson's first year they won 11 games.  Same thing with the next couple of years.  I firmly believe last year was a classic case of locker room distractions.  It started with the first 2 losses and the media tore Pagano and Grigson to shreds.  The locker room was obviously divided and players didn't give their all after Luck was injured and Pep was fired.  Diversity can fuel or cripple a team.  The first year players rallied behind Arians, coming together for Chuck who was ill.  However, when the finger pointing begins, concentration/focus is divided, and effort/motivation lacks.

Of course there will be a learning curve for most players and coaches starting something new, but with a whole offseason and an extra pre season game, I doubt it lasts long.  I believe we will be firing on all cylinders before the trade deadline.

Furthermore, if Art Jones can stay healthy, he is a HUGE impact player that people are forgetting about.  When Anderson gets going and Parry and Kerr in the mix, I do believe our front 3 will be a force.  Kendall Langford won't need to carry as big of a load either.  If we can get a difference maker in the form of an OLB pass rusher, I see this team being in the thick of things come January, assuming no major setbacks.  Chuck will be focusing on defense with Williams and Monachino.  They all will be fine together, once they get midway through the season.

On offense, I believe we need 2 OL via the draft, and some time for everybody to work with Philben, then our offense will be MUCH better.  I believe we need a new C, and depending on who is available when we pick and our draft strategy, we could use a G or T.  Luck will need to work on getting rid of the ball and making better decisions, but the run game will be a difference maker this season.

We haven't brought in many new FA, and even lost a few, but that doesn't necessarily mean we haven't progressed.  Coaching is a huge factor, and I believe we have the right guys for the job.

It's all good we all make mistakes. I'm guilty of it myself sometimes.

No Sio was a good starter in Oakland. He got hurt towards the end of the 2014 season in which Oakland drafted Ben Heeney, and changed coaching staffs. After Jack Del Rio took over Sio fell out of favor while recovering from his injury and they chose Heeney to take over. That is why they eventually traded him to us. Many Raiders fans thought that Sio was a key part of their defense along with Mack. The Raiders trading him to us for a 6th made a lot of Raiders fans very mad. I think he has the potential to be a very good linebacker in our system especially blitzing and in coverage.

I definitely saw some good things out of Sio.  Wish he got more reps though.  I believe he was the one who hit Mallet to take him out of the game and that is how he ended up losing the starting job (if I'm not mistaken).  I don't think Grigson is sweating losing Jerrell then if Nate and Sio are much younger.  Probably should ask DQ to restructure (doubt he will ask or DQ would even consider it), but his age is creeping up there also.
