  1. I think we're missing each other.

You're making an argument that says if we didn't pay Blount we're not going to pay Peterson.

And we may not pay Peterson.    But it will have nothing to do with comparing him to Blount.

Blount is a decent running back.

Peterson is a Hall of Famer.

They can't be compared in any way.    And you compared them by using them in the same sentence.

You misread. There was no comparison of the backs. Because there is no comparison.

Colts need help right now. They passed on Blount who would have not cost much to attain this year. Given that, I don't foresee them breaking the bank on AP especially if their reasoning for not feeling Blount was worth it was because of his off-field issues.

  2. Seriously?

You want to write the names LaGarrette Blount and Adrian Peterson in the same sentence?

    Like they're almost the same?

The only thing they have in common is that they both play running back.    Otherwise..........

    Precisely.

Blount is worth the 3.75 mil over two years to help us NOW. And we didn't pull the trigger.

AP will cost MUCH more than him as he is much more the back and I don't see Grig paying him ...

  3. Arizona is like KC last year. Except Stanton is not even as good as Smith. They have a tough schedule coming up with lots of divisional games. They could easily go from a bye to a wild card. I don't know how Arians is doing it with all the different Qbs but credit to him to have them in this position. I still like GB on the NFC and maybe the Cowboys too.

  4. Hmmm, lets look at those inane reasons:

    1) Blount quit on his team 4 days ago. - He left at the last play of the game when Ben Roethlisberger was going to take a knee.  The Steelers hadn't used Blount the whole game.  They handed the ball to Bell 33 times and the handed it to Blount ZERO times.  It was an obvious snub by the Steelers and Blount knew it.  I'd be mad too.  The Steelers didn't include him in their scheme and so they didn't need him on the last play when Roethlisberger was going to take a knee.  Yeah, it was bad protocol but understandable.  I think the Steelers suck for excluding him the whole night.

    2) Blount got caught smoking weed with Bell less than 24 hours before a game less than 4 months ago. - Give me a freaking break.  If you want to exclude every NFL player who smoked dope, you would get rid of about 1/2 the league.  Based on your logic, you would hire any of these guys who smoked dope: Ricky Williams, Josh Gordon, Adrian Peterson, Von Miller, Aldon Smith, etc, etc, etc.  Ask any player and they'll tell you about 1/2 the players smoke dope.  Btw, Mikel Leshoure, who was also mentioned as a possibility has also be arrested for marijuana possession - twice.  You know how many times Blount has been arrested?  Once.  There are many players in the NFL with multiple arrests.  You need to come on down from your ivory tower and live in the real world.  Stuff like this happens, it's not the end of the world

    3) He has been on 4 teams in 5 years - something is amiss with the guy. - If you knew anything about him, you would know he never played for the Titans.  He made the initial 53-man roster but then was waived to make room for some linebackers that Tennessee needed.  He was picked up off waivers by Tampa Bay, which was the first team he actually played for.  Blount was traded to NE for a Jeff Demps (who is now on our practice squad (ironic?) and a 7th round pick).  After playing with the Patriots in 2013 and getting the exact same yardage and touchdowns as Stevan Ridley, Blount was a free agent.  Since they already had Ridley and Shane Vareen, they went cheap and wouldn't spend a lot of money on Blount.  As a free agent, he signed with the Steeler who offered him 2 years and $3.85 million.  He set NFL and team records with both TB and NE.

    4) Steeler players reportedly wanted him gone before he walked off early. - And some wanted him there.  Not everybody gets along 100% with every player.  That was an ignorant statement of why we shouldn't have signed him.  "I know him, I know he's not a selfish guy, he's a team guy," said safety Mike Mitchell.

    5) His talent & skill set is similar to a back that the Colts already have on the roster. - Nonsense!!  TRich sucks.  He hasn't performed since we signed him - that's why we went and got Bradshaw.

    6) He does not know the Colts system - how long before they could actually put him in a game? - RBs pick up the game quickly.  Having played for TB, NE, and Pittsburgh, he would have been able to get in pretty quickly.

    7) They have RB's on the PS they can bring up already who know the team & system - Yeah, RBs with ZERO NFL experience.  Blount has been thoroughly tested.  He's been a starter and he's been a back-up.  He's played in playoff games.  He is seasoned.

    8) Exactly how long does it take to become a distraction?  Seems with Blount - not long at all - That is pure speculation!

If you watched the playoffs last year, you saw Blount roll over the Colts.  Blount was exactly what the Colts needed.  Too bad Grigson, Pagano, or Irsay were too stupid or too slow to see it.  That's why the Colts will be watching the Super Bowl from the comfort of their own couches again this year.

Great post. Blount's "baggage" is over played I think. He was great in NE last year and ran like a bull. No team is made up of 53 saints. This was a calculated risk that was worth it given our RB situation. But perhaps Grig is a little gun shy given how things have turned out with Trent ...

  5. I feel like people are really overreacting to all of the "Colts are winless against other division leaders/winless in big games" mumbo jumbo that is getting thrown around here and in the media. First off, the Colts beat Cincy, who I believe is a division leader. Yes, AJ Green wasn't in that game but the Colts blew them out. I doubt Green was worth 27 points.

The last ten years or so should have shown NFL fans that all your team truly needs to do is to get into the playoffs to have a chance at a SB. A lot of times, the "best" team doesn't win the whole thing. Both years in the past ten that the Giants won the whole thing, they came out of a putrid NFC East and had been left for dead. The Ravens were one of the last teams anyone expected to win the whole thing two seasons ago, in fact some thought the young Colts had a chance to upset them in their very first game. When our Colts won in 06-07, the Colts were not one of the teams people thought had a chance. The defense had been awful at times at that season, and no one believed Manning had enough help to get it done. Yes, one of the favorites won it all last year, but just as often, if not more often, a team that is on no one's radar is the winner.

The more important question, whether or not the team is flawed (and this Colts team is with both the OL and DL), is whether they are good enough to knock off teams better than them. I think our Colts are, and I think the Pats loss, while very disappointing on multiple levels, has caused an overreaction with both our fans and the media. The Colts just need to focus on winning their division and once in the playoffs, anything can happen. This Colts team IS good enough to beat the Pats and Broncos even if they may not be as good a team. The Colts primary concern should be the Texans at this point since they are only a game behind, and the first step to that is to take care of business against Jax at home this coming weekend.

The defense was pitiful against the Pats and some coaching decisions were dubious, but as 06-07 showed us, a lot can change in the playoffs. The Colts just need to win the division and take one game at a time.

It is clear that our coaching is an issue. That does not bode well for the post-season but we will see how the next 6 games go and what improvements we can make.

  6. I've looked at it, and he's a good tight end. We know we are comparing different eras, and today's game is more pass oriented than those days. Before we put him in Mackey or Ditka territory, let's see if he can get through a few more seasons uninjured , and makes the HOF down the line, before you guys put him in that category.

He is the best TE in the game of his era so far. That is the main criteria for the hall. He dominated the Colts with his blocking and not his passing skills and that was the area we all were most worried about with good reason given his last catch was a rumble over most of defense to the end zone from the 20. That is how much of a force he is whether he is going out for passes or staying on the line.

  7. This Colts team is reminding me of the same team under Peyton.

    No Offensive Line

    Defense is getting exposed.

    No turnovers.

    No running game.

Got rid off Peyton and utilizing all that money to build the monster?.

Huh? This team is nothing like the Peyton teams.

  8. This was my take. Luck seemed hesitant all night.  I don't know if he was passive given everyone was harping on his 7 picks vs NE the last two games or if it was NEs coverage. But when I watched the game, there were guys open and plays to be made and he didn't make them. While I don't think he made any bad mistakes even the pick was a nice play by Revis, he didn't make any special plays either that were needed for the Colts to contend in the game. I read that article from your sports guy over the weekend about the coaching staff trying to work on Luck's decision making but I wonder if they tone him down so to speak if some of his dynamic play making will also suffer. He has that gunslinger in him like Favre and Romo. You take the good with the bad because the good always outweighs the bad.

yes, I thought he did look passive. I credit more the Pats defense and our lack of a rush game.

  9. Here's how I see this, we were rebuilding pretty much like the redskins in 2012. A winning organization (Colts) doesn't get cute. They take the best player in the draft and build around him. The Redskins take a guy who had an ACL tear at Baylor in college and is a running, read option qb. They also trade 3 first round picks and a 2nd to move up. They gave up the 6th pick in 2012, the 39th pick in 2012, the 22nd pick in 2013, and the 2nd pick in 2014 to move up 4 spots to take RGIII.

To put this in perspective they wasted 4 picks that have the best chance of producing elite players. To put this in another perspective, lets see what we got with the 4 picks that the Redskins traded for RGIII just to see what kind of team picks like that can create.

2012 1st round pick:   Andrew Luck

2012 2nd round pick: Coby Fleener

2013 1st round pick:  Bjoern Werner

2014 1st round pick: Trent Richardson

This was our haul that we got with the 4 picks that the skins could of had. Luck is a huge hit, Coby and Bjoern are improving fast, and even though Trent is kind of a bust (he has his strengths, but he's average at best) we hit on 3 of those picks. the skins wasted 4 picks on this kid and it will set them back 5 years. This is the year that we really started to see our 2012 draft class develop and when you gamble and lose on 4 picks, your development is down the toilet.

Kinda interesting that we can appreciate what we got when you lay another team's misfortunes and our gain comparatively on the table.

They thought they had their franchise guy though at the most important position in all of sports. It was worth the risk but it just didn't work out at least so far anyways.

  10. This seems to have really turned into an ugly mess. RG3 is going to be playing with monster pressure going forward. I don't think I've every heard a HC say so many bad things about his QB in the 55 years I've been following football. Like I said earlier , Snyder has to have his head over the toilet puking.

Here ya go .. it's just a couple minutes of Jay Gruden pretty much saying RG3 stinks very badly.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000429995/article/gruden-rgiii-not-even-close-to-good-enough-vs-bucs

Very pointed comments to say the least. Jay seems very frustrated with him and I think that is seeping out. You look for your QB to be a leader and for RG to perform the way he did AND criticize his teammates may have been the tipping point.

I agree with you though, I have never heard a HC be so harsh with his QB and so specific too. Not sure if that was smart by Gruden. He had said Robert needs to learn to keep things in house and then he hangs him out to dry.

  11. The entire Pats team put a physical beatdown on the Colts. The Gronk touchdown was the equivalence of a high school bully running through a group of preschoolers on a playground...And then the entire team has the audacity to rub it in our faces with the taunting and celebration that followed. I want this Pats team again, I don't care where the game is played. Take them and kick them to the curb. This has been personal for these teams for a very long time, and it just got taken up a notch. Time for the pompous scum that root for this team to be embarrased the way we have suffered...

    Breathe.  ;)

One game. One loss. Six more to go to fix things.

  12. On top of that Luck had a higher passer rating then Tom Brady that game.

The big difference was Tom Brady had a RB that rushed for nearly 200 yards on the Colts and Andrew Luck's RB's couldn't do anything.

Honestly despite some really good games this season our defense still seems to get pushed around by the better teams in the NFL.

I think Luck will have a tough time shedding this moniker that he makes poor decisions. I know that writer from Indy had that story before the game about how the coaching staff is working with him on his decisions but every time he makes a mistake that other QBs make, he will be more scrutinized for it. I did feel like in the game he was more hesitant then I have normally seem him. Part of that could have been NEs coverages but he seemed gun shy to me. I just hope the coaching staff does not end up muting him in an effort to refine his game. His play is high risk kind of like Favre and Big Ben. I think in part you have to take the good with the bad as the good far outweighs the bad with him. JMO.

  13. Considering that Gronk is typically the 1st or 2nd read then yes it does.

It's not semantics, there is a huge difference between pancaking a defender and shielding a defender.  As far as Gray getting to the third level, that doesn't have a lot to do with Gronk's individual blocking, it has to do with the blocking as a hole.

How do you know he is typically the first or second read? Do you have the play call sheet? Depends on the opponent and the play call. Pats are notorious for spreading the ball around

How do you figure that Gronk's blocking did not have to do with Gray getting to the third level given he was the one clearing the holes for him at the line?

  14. Oh my word, do you really have that hard of a time understanding.  It's percentage of passes.  It doesn't matter if the Pats throw 50 times (Broncos game) or 30+ times (Chicago and Colts games) , the percentage of times that Brady targeted Gronk when he was throwing the ball was down to 16%.  The Pats threw the ball about the same number of times thye did against Chicago, yet in Chicago Gronk was targeted on 25% of the throws.  Against the Colts he was targeted on 16% of the throws.  See, it's percent of throws not percent of plays.  Everyone's target per pass attempt was not down.

Your second sentence is just stupid.  I never said he didn't make blocks actually just the opposite I said he took angles and shielded well.  You initially said he pancaked defenders, that is not true, then you claimed he was highly regarded for his blocking, yes Chris Collinsworth was in a circle over Gronk all night and now you are claiming that Gray was typically not touched until the third level, which isn't true either.

Not being targeted does not mean he was not open, you know? The design of the play may have have had Gronk as the 2nd or 3rd option and Brady threw to his first read. It was clear in the first half that Brady was trying to get the ball downfield. Perhaps they saw more of a weakness there. They are a game specific team so to read anything into Gronk not being targeted as evidence that he was somehow shut down is a huge reach.

I really don't know what your point is on his blocking. Semantics I guess. I said pancaked, you said he good angles and shielded. So we agree he did a fine job blocking in the run game. I suggest you also look at how many of our DBs had tackles on Gray if you don't think he routinely made it to our third level.
