  1. I was watching Inside the NFL last night and they began with asking about what should happen to a HC that has won 46 games in four seasons, four divisional titles and made a Super Bowl. Phil Simms said, "he should be paid 10 million a year." And they all started laughing.

This got me thinking. Was John Fox fired because Peyton Manning once again came up small in the post-season? Sure seems that way. I mean even Marvin Lewis has a job without one post-season win and yet his Fox out of a job after securing the 1 or 2 seeds each of the past 3 seasons and making it to the SB. He also won the West with Tebow and a playoff game.

But besides Manning, this IMO comes down to Elway's ego. I get he wants to win the super bowl as that is the goal of every team but he put such a ridiculous emphasis on it that he now fired his HC and also has to find a DC. I am not sure how is any different than Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones who have been trying to "buy" a ring for years and years. You can't do it the NFL. The Denver writers are saying there was zero chemistry in the locker room this year among the million dollar players that Elway brought in. Perhaps, he is thinking back to his last two SBs when Denver could only put a great team around him by circumventing the cap.

Who does he think he is going to hire right now that will be better than John Fox? Adam Gase? It makes no sense and I don't blame Manning if he decides to hang it up. Not sure I would want to come back either.

  2. I just felt the need to explain myself, and at times I find it easier to simply write what I think then the write what I think and spend the time to redraft, although sometimes I do draft outside the forum and redraft and cut and paste . . .

I guess we are going to have to disagree with my points, fair enough . . . but I will stand by the point that it takes two to tango and sometimes your teammate helps (catches) and sometimes he does not (drops) and the same goes for your opponent does the same on each count . . . I will view all of them and the season in a continuum and not necessary single out one thing when I know I got the opposite benefit or determent a game or two earlier . . . things even out in the wash if you will . . .

As for the merits of my opinion I will stick to it . . . I am not a fan of stats per se and will look to wins as important also, and more specifically who you play and when . . . is the opponent a tomato can or division leader, does the team hold down a QBs "stats" or are they are sieve allowing a middle of the road QB 400 yards in his sleep . . . and so on . . .

And as I mentioned Pats have played tougher competition and handle them better . . . and if I recall you in a earlier post indicated that wins are important to a MVP candidacy . . . and with that said the extension of this is the ability to garner these wins against tougher competition as the same is more difficult to accomplish . . . surely your teammates help out on the matter but so does other players teammates . . . . sometimes Gronk drops a pass that could of led to a game winning TD when it in his hands, sometimes Devin McCourty takes a bad angle and allows Nelson to score a TD, then sometimes your D gets a pick 6 or a Collins blocks a FG and Arrington scores a TD on ST or Edelman breaks a big play for a TD at a critical time or run back a punt for a TD . . . and so on . . . so yah I would love to come in talk about how frustrating it was that Brady's teammates "hurt" his chances in GB and say that was the end to things but that is not how it is as he has teammates help out in other games . . .

So we'll have to disagree fair enough . . . to date Brady and the pats are holding the #1 seed in the AFC and are 6-2 against winning teams post 40+ points against most of them, meanwhile Rodgers and the Packers are 2-3 against winning teams, got to play the NFC South, are presently the 6th seed in the NFC and trailing in the division to the Detroit Lions who have not won the division since I think the Bush I administration and are coached by a coach that a certain fan base thought was below average . . .

surely there are two more games to go and the race could change, GB could beat Detroit in Lambeau, and the Pats could cough up the #1 seed like last year . .. but that is in in future and as it stands now has not happen yet . . . so for me at this point it time its still Brady, surely that could change, but we are not their yet . . . so I will stick with my man Brady with the two respective resumes to date . . .

sorry long winded again . . . :cheer:

Great stuff. Hard to argue against the points you raise ... I agree that the last two games will decide it. If GB ends up being a WC and the Pats secure the best record in football then I think Brady gets it.

  3. Has anyone every given it any thought that the Broncos had a very early bye like week 4 of the season and I'm sure all the team is feeling it about now considering that the Colts and Patriots had a week 10 bye.  I think the bye before the playoffs will be welcomed for sure. :)

That is a good point. The early bye can be a disadvantage for sure this time of year.

  4. I don't think the game calls are all that bad. You don't lead the NFL in offense without good coaching. Starting slow is a problem for sure but the adjustments are why the Colts win. We lost two games out of the four that we should have won. Sometimes you have to give credit to the opposing team. We have managed to win 10 out of the last 12 games. There are a lot of other teams in the NFL that would be very happy with that.

It is not all doom and gloom and overall I like the direction of the team but if we are serious about getting to the SB then I think we have to really look at the coaches first and then the players/personnel.

  5. I think the coaching staff has done fine with the players they have. All but one are kinda new so I say give them time. There are very few coaches who started out winning a lot of games. If the coaches are not doing their jobs then explain why the Colts record is as good at it is with the players we do have?

I think you have to go deeper than record. I don't see a very disciplined team. I see a team that continues to start slow. I see poor in game calls and adjustments. I see a team that has not even been competitive at times against the top teams. I see Luck continue to make the same mistakes over and over and over.

I am not saying it is all coaching. But that is the biggest issue IMO.

  6. I been preaching all season about the fact that the Colts are not yet ready to advance in the playoffs. We are still in the middle of a total rebuild. It takes at least 4 or 5 years to build a super bowl caliber team. We are still at least one draft and a couple of good free agents away yet.

Yes. Still work to be done. Coaching staff needs to be heavily looked at this off-season.

  7. source for what ?  no, you don't think. That's why you buy what ever the nfl sells you.

did you say something about Buffalo not making it ? oh look, that's still up in the air and Dallas winning tonight actually benefited them.

Buffalo is not going anywhere. They are at NE last game. WCs will all come from the North.

  8. First time in a while where it feels like there is no clear cut MVP. If the Texans were going to the post-season, Watt would be the obvious choice but doubt he gets it. Comes down to Rodgers and Brady these last two games.

  9. Last year's team was not Super Bowl ready so not sure why we have this comparison. In terms of this season, the Colts are a better team but not playing like it. Too many turnovers, sloppy, undisciplined. I think this coaching staff has to really be looked at this off-season. Something is off. Could be game planning, practices, not sure.

  10. Fox knew after the Rams game that the passing game was struggling. He said the team would run and it has very successfully. The real question is can this team win if it is reliant completely on Manning? I think that answer is no. Whether he is injured or declining, I don't know but they are not putting the ball in his hands right now. SD will be a big test. They will look to shut down the run and force Manning to beat them. Seems strange to say that but they have to see what he has got.

Offense, C+: 76 plays, 362 yards, 23 first downs (14 passing, 6 rushing, 3 from penalty), 5/16 on third down, 1/1 on 4th down, 2/3 in the red zone, 4 turnovers, 25 points (two defensive scores allowed); why all the turnovers and dropped passes? WHY???

QB: This guy is driving me crazy. Stop trying to avoid sacks at the last minute, please! And the pick-six was just a huge missed read that wound up being very costly. The other pick was another slightly off pass, and the worst happens. Ugh. He also missed a few other throws, and was just super slow to get into any kind of rhythm. He didn't get a lot of help from his receivers, of course, so it wasn't all his fault, but he didn't do his best work either. Then he decided to play, and the Browns were in trouble. He started running, and six plays later, he was putting a juke move on a linebacker while he barreled into the end zone. It wasn't all smooth sailing from that point, but he was ready to play, and despite some mistakes, did just enough to put the game away. C, still too many drastic mistakes, but just enough playmaking

    Backs / receivers / tight ends, C+:

Running game: No run game. Luck once again led the team in rushing. The backs both did a decent job in the few chances they got, but they weren't given enough opportunities. Luck scrambled well, mostly. Richardson ran hard. Boom did a GREAT job on the 4th down run. However, he didn't do a good job on the previous run. He left his feet trying to get into the end zone, rather than staying low and plowing ahead for the short yard we needed. Made up for it with the fancy spin move. And when the game was on the line, he was on the field, despite his previous fumble issues. He also out-touched Richardson for the third straight week. B

Passing game: Sooo, I've seen them credited with 6 drops, and I think there was more like 9. Good coverage by the Browns, and they knocked some passes out, but the receivers caused some serious problems. Nicks struggled to reach some passes, Hilton and Moncrief each had drops, and then, Reggie... He's obviously not healthy, and it sucks. He said he felt like he was throwing the game. I hate it. He didn't play well. He was able to get open or work his way to the ball regularly, no matter who was covering him, but he couldn't complete any plays. Allen didn't produce statistically, but he did make a big difference, especially drawing the PI down the field on the final drive. Fleener made some tough catches. C-, too many drops, not enough separation

OL / blocking: Quite a few pressures from a line that's being juggled because of injuries, but the pressures didn't really come from the replacements. Shipley gave up a couple, but he and Holmes both played well. Holmes, especially. Reitz can't stay on the field, which is sad, because he's a strong performer at guard. Castonzo and Mewhort were a little sloppy. The run blocking was sufficient, with some nice combo blocks and some nice push at times, but they weren't overpowering at all. And while Mewhort was sloppy in pass protection, he got after it in the run game, locking onto guys and moving them around. There were a couple of counter blocks that were really nice. I think the run game could have gotten going, but the three-and-outs and penalties and the eventual two score deficit made the run game almost a non-factor. C+, a lot of pressures and penalties

Defense, B: 63 plays, 248 yards, 14 first downs (7 passing, 6 rushing, 1 from penalty), 4/15 on third down, 1/2 in the red zone, 2 turnovers, 10 points; kept their struggling offense from doing too much of anything

Defensive front: Nicely contained the run, aside from a couple of longer carries, but nothing too troubling overall. Everyone tackled better than they have been recently, and the defensive linemen were disruptive against the run. I'm liking the rotation with Chapman, Hughes and Jones in the middle, even though Hughes isn't really a nose tackle. He still inserts himself into the action. The pass rush wasn't consistent, but there were a few big rushes that disrupted the timing on their passes, most of which were blitzes. The Browns wanted to run, though, and stuck with it for some production, including the TD, where Jones was completely washed out of the play, and none of the linebackers were involved, leaving Mike Adams hanging out to dry. Mostly good stuff from the defensive front, though. B, just need more pass rush

Pass defense: Surprisingly good game, without our shutdown corner. Stayed close to receivers, the corners got some separations and tackled well, and so did the LBs. Freeman bounced back nicely in coverage, and while he gave up some catches to Cameron, he was pretty much always close to him when the ball got there, just done in by one really nice bucket throw, and another low one that was handled nicely by the receiver. Adams' interception was terrific. Everybody thought Gordy would get torched, and he was way better than I expected, finally getting the pick to seal the game. Toler got beat a couple of times by Gordon, but Hoyer missed a couple of throws, and I thought Toler stayed on his man nicely on all but two or three plays. It will be nice to get Vontae back, whenever that happens, but if we keep using these triangle coverages to lessen the man-to-man load of the corners and safeties, we'll survive. B, maybe Hoyer's bad play made them look better, but they still made the plays

Special teams: McAfee had a bad game, wasn't good kicking or punting, and overcompensated with some punts that were too long, leaving his coverage guys out to dry. Coverage wasn't good itself, neither was the return game, with Cribbs not getting close to breaking one open. He also got ate up on some punts that bounced and rolled exactly how the Browns needed. I thought they were borderline decisions, but they all seemed to work out in Cleveland's favor. AV was money. The Boomstick seemed to struggle going to the right, but Vinatieri lined up and drilled a 51 yarder, with no doubt. He's on fire. C+

    Coaching / playcalling / game management, B+:

Nearly 4:1 in favor of called pass plays, which is waaay too high. Hard to tell how much control Luck has at the line of scrimmage, and we opened up with two running plays in a row, so it's not like the objective coming in was to throw the ball every down. But that's almost what we did. Also, our screen plays are still terrible. And someone has to get Luck to stop fumbling the ball. B-

Nice defensive gameplan. Made up for the loss of Davis with some zone coverages that were better designed and much better executed than in the Steelers game. Blitzed a ton against the run and the pass, and it worked. A

I didn't like the decision to go for two, just because there was a heck of a lot of time left on the clock, and a lot of possessions to come. I thought the score would work itself out, and if you did need two, you could try later. I do like the more progressive attitude of giving your offense a chance to make plays, but I didn't think it was needed, yet. I also liked the challenge decisions at the end of the game, along with the timeout on third down. Those all seemed to be handled perfectly. B

Game ball: TY Hilton, first two TD game of the year, with one of them putting the game away. Struggled through the first half, but showed up when we needed him most. Big time player.

Next up, home finale, hosting the Texans. This one is for the division.

    GO COLTS!!!

Thanks for compiling this. I agree with all of this pretty much. Luck is driving me crazy too. Don't understand the slow start and the mistakes but he did recover well for the win.

  12. Rodgers right now is the clear #1 and then Brady. I don't see any other players challenging those two the rest of the way.

I love the season Watt is having but Houston won't have enough wins to give him consideration.

  13. Kind of hard to grasp the Packers haven't been good the last few years. Rogers 1st year the Packers went 6-10. 2nd year made a wild card spot. 3rd year a super bowl. Next year 15-1. Next year 11-5. Those numbers really don't show a team that hasn't been very good. year 2- a wild card. year 3-super bowl. year 4- 15-1. year 5-11-5 with a loss in division round. Sorry, not a sign of a bad team. So with all due respect I must disagree with your opinion. My original intent was that Luck started with a whole new team period. There were at that time only 8 players on the roster left from the 2-14 team and 2 of those players were kickers. New GM and all but 1 coaches. In my humble opinion Rogers had a much better team to step into than Luck. Luck did not have the benefit of standing on the sidelines for 3 seasons to learn how to play QB in the pros. The Packers head coach was hired in 1999. Pagano, a rookie head coach who lost most of the year due to illness. Big big difference in the way these two great QBs started their careers.

I could say the same about the Colts, 11-5, 11-5 and this year maybe 12-4? But we know why? Right. Luck. Same for GB these last few years.

I do agree that Rodgers inherited a much, much better team in 2009 and he went and won the SB with it a year later. Since then though his FO has not done a great job retooling that defense and getting him an Oline. This is the first year probably since 2010 that the Packers look more like a complete team and not the Aaron Rodgers show but I still don't think his defense is very good. Statistically it is not good at all so we will see if it holds up in the post-season.

I think we both know Rodger is the better QB regardless of draft position or which team they went to. I like the way Luck is progressing and believe he will continue to improve. Could he ever hit Rodgers level? Maybe. But I am hoping he does not have to as if Grig continues to build this team the way we all hope then he won't have to be the best QB in the game to win the ring.

  14. Do you realize how stupid Washington will look if this guy tears it up with another team ? It's taking a tremendous amount of conviction by Gruden to bench him for McCoy. Unless I'm crazy and they really do still plan on developing RG3 ? Could they ever really sing him to a new contract if he was successful in 2015 as a Redskin ? Man... just a hard scenario to imagine..

Kind of like Johnson and Ryan watching Sanchez tear it up in Philly? Brutal. I can see RG going somewhere and having success based on nothing else than the Redskins being the epitome of dysfunctional.

  15. One thing we need to keep in mind. Rogers has an elite RB and a good defense behind him. He can afford not to force things. Exactly what does Luck have to fall back on except his will to win in your opinion? Comparing Luck with Rogers and what they do and what they are capable of doing all depends on the team play of the Colts and Packers. The better the total team is, the better the QB play is. Of coarse Rogers is going to look better than Luck. He is on a better team. He is a seasoned veteran with a super bowl already under his belt. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

This is where we disagree. Green Bay has not been very good the last few years. Especially defensively and his Oline. Eddie Lacy just came on board last year. He really did not have a great RB prior to him. GB's drafts overall have been suspect. Rodgers has been carrying that team for quite some time and has still been playing at an all time level. At this point, there is only one Aaron Rodgers, he is the best. Luck I think is on his way. We will see how his game develops but this thread topic is very relevant as he does need to clean up his game to get to that next level. I believe he will.
