  1. As the article states, there was no intention of taking them as a package, unlike what you said.

    Todd McShay on Bennett:

    http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/content/blogs/blogging-the-buckeyes/2015/05/0503-benett-slide.html

I understood why he slipped a little bit because there are only so many teams looking for a three-technique and an inside pass-rusher. He ideally fits in a Tampa 2 system. Not always are those teams looking for that player. They have other needs and maybe had players rated higher at other positions. I could understand a little bit, but falling all the way to the sixth round really shocked me.

I did get back a couple texts saying maybe there was maybe a little more medical than people thought. I don’t have any details on that. I think that was probably part of it

Thank you for taking the time for checking that for me. As I said, it wasn't character concerns. I like the draft as I graded it a B in a previous thread and I was nitpicking here. I guess it's just frustration with always missing on late picks and I'd like to see Grigson go BPA late so we have the best possible chance of getting a solid player. I can't argue with the evidence you have shown me about Bennett falling, but Grigson's track record in the rounds 5-7 isn't good either.

  2. I give him this season just to get used to things because we have such a crowded group of pass catchers, and he'll be a rookie.

He is being hyped quite a bit, but I think all the tools are there, physically and mentally.  If he has a bad season in terms of numbers, I think it'll be more due to having so many pass catchers on the team.  I guess time will tell.

He's a 5th round pick.  You don't really expect much from him.  I also find it hard to believe that 32 NFL GMs and all their scouts and personnel guys simply forgot about Michael Bennett for 3 rounds.  You can also find why the Colts took David Parry.  The Stanford connection might have something to do with it, but it would be a very small reason

I agree with this, that's why when a 2nd round talent at the same position falls 3 rounds, you take him. Bennett isn't going to lose 3 rounds of talent because he was drafted in the 5th, he'll be a 2nd round guy drafted in the 5th with a solid chance of starting, why wouldn't you do that? Also, if you believe that that the 32 GMs didn't forget about Bennett, find me the the actual reason they didn't draft him. It wasn't character concerns, I know that 100%, and Grigson should of known that on draft day when he had that info before us. It was a typical late round goof, and even though I really liked the draft, it was a bad move that could of cost us a solid starter. http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/colts-insider/2015/05/10/indianapolis-colts-defensive-linemen-henry-anderson-david-parry-stanford-nfl-draft/27091455/There's an article on why he took Parry. They scouted anderson and wanted both.

  3. I suppose you think we drafted Fleener just because he played with Luck? Have you actually watched any tape on Parry?

You're accidentelly semi right in that it's pretty well known that while scouting Anderson they noticed Parry making plays so in a way yes they drafted him because of Anderson.

We drafted Fleener because 1.) He was an actual late 1st round talent that we got at the beginning of the 2nd, and 2.) Luck throws to Fleener and that chemistry is a lot more important than two defensive players playing together in a defensive line in college. I watched a bit of tape on Parry after he was drafted and he's doesn't look that good. He may fit the 3-4, but he's nowhere near as good as Michael Bennett and Grigson goofed, plain and simple. As far as late round picks go, Grigson hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt, I believe other than Ulrick John, none of our 6th and 7th rounders are even on the team that Grigson has drafted in the last three years. None of the 5th rounders have stood out either besides newsome. So 1 out of 12 picks I believe in the last 3 rounds.

  4. Strange to say the Colts spent a 5th round pick on someone just because they played with Henry Anderson.

I meant come on there's got to be a better reason than that.  How about the kid can play, Grigs isn't that silly.

Parry fits here way more than Bennett would have.

Now with that being said I think Bennett was a really good pick up for the Jaguars scheme. Honestly even with them he isn't really going to see the field much.  Wouldn't be surprised if they cut him and placed him on the PS.

I agree with that as Parry plays a 3-4 defense better and Bennett is more suited for a 4-3, however, the talent difference is too big not to take Bennett. Let me put it to you this way, if a team offered to trade their 2nd round pick for our 5th rounder, would you do it? I'm sure you would. This is basically the same thing. Two players at the same position with a three round talent difference, and Grigson basically said he wouldn't do that trade and took the 5th rounder.

  5. How does a 2nd round defensive tackle get "lost in the shuffle"?  If teams feel a player is legitimately worthy of being drafted in the second round they don't lose you and then wake up and say "Oh yeah I forgot about Mike Bennet!" and pull the trigger in the 7th round.  The boards spoke and teams including the ones whose scheme he translates right into thought the value was much lower than the 2nd round.  Doesn't mean he's a bad player, but that's where they placed him off his college tape.

Show me where Michael Bennett had character concerns or other issues and I will change my mind, I know you can't. Sometimes players fall. I can sure show you he was a 2nd round talent based on scouting reports if you don't believe me. If every player went exactly where they were valued, there would be no steals in the draft or no value picks. I don't understand how you fail to grasp this.

  6. I think giving Dorsett a B is too strict.  His talents weren't showcased very well at Miami.  With a couple of seasons of experience to work on knowing the playbook, running good routes, and getting used to the pace of the NFL, he could be an annual 1000+ yard receiver.  I've seen some comparisons of him made to Hilton and Antonio Brown.

David Parry as an F in the 5th round also seems kind of harsh.  If he comes in as a 5th rounder and can even get a rotational spot, I'd be happy.

David Parry as an F is absolutely fair. I predicted he won't make the 53, and I'm sticking to it. When we were in the chat for the draft, I was begging for us to trade up for Michael Bennett, a 2nd round defensive tackle talent that fell for what I can confidently say now, no real reason except he got lost in the shuffle. When we traded up and our pick came in, for 3 seconds the screen said DT and I thought we got Bennett. Instead we take a guy named David Parry for no other reason except he had a Stanford defensive connection with our 3rd round pick Henry Anderson. Absolute deserved F.

  7. Remember....

One year ago at this time,  no one was saying anything positive about Mike Adams,  and look what he turned into.

Perhaps we'll get lucky again and Lowery will turn into this year's version of Mike Adams?    Or not.    But it's possible.

Either way,   I wouldn't get down on Geathers if he doesn't earn a starting job in his rookie year.    It just might not work out that way.....

Absolutely, Lowery could be solid, he isn't a guarantee. I want either him or Geathers to step up, should be a 50/50 competition. I hope it's best man wins and Lowery is at the age (29) where if he turns into Mike Adams, it's a big win for us. Here's to a big battle at S, and hopefully if Geathers wins outright, he is named the starter. If Lowery wins, I'm fine with that as well and we can let Geathers develop.

  8. A 4th rounder should not have to be a starter to meet expectations, regardless of the weakness at a position on any team. They're making the transition from college to the pros. If Geathers doesn't start at all next year, it shouldn't be a sad thing at all.

I guess we see things a bit differently. I'm basing it more on the strength (or weakness) of the position, combined with where he was drafted. I believe if he is as good as a normal 4th rounder, that will be good enough to get playing time at the very least and a starter's role down the road. A lot of that is based on how weak we are at Safety, not that a 4th rounder is a guaranteed starter in this case.

  9. rookies are still getting use to the nfl so you expect them to struggle, the fact that dorsett and geathers can play in shorts doesnt mean anything if they cant play in pads and  players actually getting rough on them

Basically you do expect them to do well in shorts, I grant you that. It's an early test that you are supposed to show flashes of what you can do in pads. For the rookies that struggle though, it can be a bad sign. Doesn't mean they'll be a bust, but it can mean they are slow developers or just don't understand the offense or defense (depending on their position). When you see them thriving, it's often a good sign going forward. Also, depending on the position (a wr or cb/s for us), they can show off some skills in shorts with the no contact rules in OTA's. Don't completely dismiss the performance and Pagano's words, he knows more than us.

  10. And why is that? What if Lowery turns out to be much better than expected, like Mike Adams was last year?

Then it will be a good thing. Until proven otherwise though, safety is our weakest position and Lowery was signed in hopes to be a temporary starter until Geathers learns the ropes and passes him up. Geathers is a 4th rounder, not a UDFA that is a sentimental favorite of the Colts board. He should be the starter at latest at the beginning of next year.

  11. again meaningless. wait til camp

If Dorsett and our other rookies were struggling, people would be talking about firing Grigson. It does matter. It may not matter with veterans because you've seen them, but when your first impression of a rookie is terrible, it's not good. The reason I brought up Kevin White was that he's 4th on the Bears depth chart right now. No Bears fan is thinking that's "meaningless". If Dorsett was struggling and dropping passes in OTA's, people would be furious on these boards.

  12. Geathers might eventually start for the Colts.

But I wouldn't count on it.

If it gets to the point where he's playing meaningful snaps beyond special teams -- then that's great.    A win for the Colts.

Just don't expect it.    It'll be a happy surprise for all if he does....

I realize he's a 4th rounder, but not only have we heard good things about him, but Safety is arguably our weakest position on the entire team. If he can't beat out Lowery by the end of the year, then that's just sad.

  13. ESPN reports (TV,  not the website)  that Dez wants 17 mill per.     I don't think he'll get that,  but he's going to get a lot.     And that means more dollars for TYH.

That's just disgusting. Hopefully it's less than that, because you are correct, it will affect TY's salary next year.

  14. I was one of the few happy with Dorsett because I had a very high opinion of him all the back from early March. I admit I didn't know a lot about D'Joun Smith, but he is looking like a solid pick. Henry Anderson was someone I was mocking in the 3rd round for us in a lot of mocks. people were telling me he wouldn't fall, but I'm glad he did. Geathers is looking good and I love the Robinson pick. Parry, Herrara and Good I'll keep an eye on. We could have a very competitive team this year on Offense and Defense. Possibly a Super Bowl run!

  15. Fox is too Conservative IMO, he plays not too lose instead of playing to win. That was evident in his time with the Broncos. I'm not a huge fan of Bill O' Brien, but I would stick with him and see what happens. If QwizBoy is telling the truth that the Texan players love him, that's an underrated and big trait. Something that seems so trivial ruined the 49ers. You can see how the Colts players love Pagano and play for him as well. A decent part of our success, especially in Luck's first year.

  16. McClain was also adamant that the Texans would take Manziel with the first overall selection in 2014. I've seen reports that both quarterbacks have had their ups and downs in camp, and none seems to have risen above the other yet. So I'd take this opinion with a grain of salt.

Hey Qwiz, you have to be rooting for Mallett to start over Hoyer, right? You know what you are basically getting from Hoyer, Mallett is the guy who may improve. IMO, if Hoyer starts, it's another year for the Texans with below average QB play.

  17. Hopefully this is the last we hear of Sam and he does quit. Don't give two cares that he's gay, but like Tebow, I care why he gets the attention, and he's a 10 time less talented version of Tebow in college that even less so deserves the attention based on his playing ability. If he wants to quit, let him. The sooner people forget about this joke, the better. Good riddance.

  18. Hey Superman, do you really think Whalen or Brown could realistically beat out Carter? Carter has been solid so far and I know we are high on him. Not a big investment, but I think it would take a lot to cut him, and Grigson knows that he wouldn't clear waivers to make it back on the practice squad.

  19. This is a very good post Jared. I felt like we did this or held on to long to safety Bob Sanders out of blind loyalty. It's hard to judge young guys like Phillip Dorsett with no real live NFL game action under his belt though from a stamina & concentration standpoint since some WRs click in practice & fizzle out under the bright lights. "No guts; No Glory" though. We've gotta put him out there to see how he handles pressure & if he crumbles underneath it all or rises above the adversity.

I'm torn because I like veterans like Johnson with experience in crunch time, but speed & great hands always gives opposing DC's fits. Overall though, I agree with your thesis 75% of the time.

The great thing is that if someone like Dorsett fails in a real game, we can use someone else or reduce his playing time a bit with moncrief until he figures it out. Same kind of situation with the other rookies. I'm a bit of a sucker for the rookies this year for two reasons. 1.) They are unknowns and have unknown potential as of now and 2.) A few of them (mostly Dorsett and Anderson), I'm extremely high on. Everyone deserves a fair chance, and the senority rule should be diminished once a player has a big training camp or does well in a few games and/or surpasses the veteran he's competing with.

  20. It's a good strategy for now though. We're in win now mode, and we've got some really good cheap young players that will demand cash very soon. All this means is we'll have pressure to hit on draft picks in the next few seasons.

Just typed that, you beat me by a couple minutes, lol.
