  1. One thing has nothing to do with the other.

I'd also say that everyone who has an issue with the Patriots isn't playing the moral superiority card. When someone gets caught cheating, they should get punished. That's my opinion. I don't think they need to be run out of the league or made to wear a scarlet letter for the rest of their career.

Applying the same standard to Ray Rice -- which I'm not even sure is necessary or appropriate, given how different the situations are -- would mean that he gets punished, does his time (he missed all of 2014, not just two games, sooo...), and then if someone wants to give him a second chance, that's their decision and their right. I'm all about the NFL penalizing players (and personnel) who do things that are wrong, dangerous, violent, etc. I'm not about locking people up and throwing away the key.

And specific to Ray Rice and what he did, it's typical for first time offenders to get lenient sentences. Whether that's a good or bad thing is another story, but let's not act like because he isn't serving a five year sentence that no one cares about the fact that he beat up his fiance. It's also relevant that he was, according to all reports, a model citizen prior to what happened, and has done everything he can to right his wrong, to whatever extent that's possible. There are some guys who should be locked under the jail; I don't think Rice is one of them. JMO

We have different views on this and we're obviously not going to agree. I'm a little harder on people like Rice with my family having some experience on this subject. I also have a military family, so I believe in putting people in Jail as well. Athletes will continue to get special treatment, so I can't do anything about it, but a subject like this really grinds my gears.

  2. I guess it would depend on the circumstances. but I have never thought a person didn't deserve a second chance unless it's murder or violence against children.

I'll put it to you this way, if he went to Jail, got some counseling there, and felt what it was like to lose your freedom and have to reflect on what he did, I would give him a 2nd chance and see how he did. The problem I have is almost all athletes that do these type of things get a slap on the wrist. Jail means a lot more and hurts more than some cash. I'm a bit biased on this subject I admit, but it upsets me when they get special privileges with the law.

  3. Just because someone thinks he deserves a second chance doesn't mean they think it's ok to hit a woman

At the least, it means they don't take it seriously. If Ray Rice hit someone's mother on here, they sure wouldn't want to give him a second chance. Funny how different it is when it affects you personally. Everyone that wants to give him a 2nd chance on here just wants to see him play again and is giving him the benefit of the doubt because he's an athlete, which is the problem in the first place.

  4. His wallet and current employment status says different

Unless you can provide a link that says different, I believe he still has money. The NFL is also a league of second chances if you have talent, I believe he will still get a job sometime in the near future. If Greg Hardy got a job after what he did and Michael Vick got a job with the Jets after he hurt those dogs then Ray rice will have one soon enough. Eventually injures will force a team to sign him to a small contract.

  5. "Until he actually gets punished, he is just as likely to do it again."

If this was the case why do we have inmates who cant stay out of prison after their original sentence is up

Some people don't learn. However, I'd be willing to give him a second chance if he spent time in jail. Then I'd know he'd have suffered and thought about what he did very carefully. He basically got off scot-free.

  6. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. What grinds my gears is the self-professed moral superiority of the bolded, as if anyone who disagrees with you is a low class moral citizen. If I could roll my eyes any harder, I'd fall over backward.

I guess I'll explain myself there. I find it funny how we all are against the Pats for what they did, but for the people voting yes here, they are basically saying that cheating in a football game is worse than hitting a woman. Everyone that voted here is against what the Pats did and they'll admit it. Yet a lot of them aren't against a woman beater.

  7. Believe it or not this sort of incident is not exclusive to this generation, Never has been

That's technically true, but with this rap music teaching these kids about raping women, stealing, and killing people and making them think it's okay, having Ray Rice actually hit a woman reinforces that rap music is correct in the lesson it teaches and kids grow up to be woman beaters.

  8. I would give it time. As others have already said, the cards are stacked against him.

Our receivers: Yes, all of them, are really freaking good. Bray may actually make the team. It's totally possible that he edges Brown and/or Griff out.

Smith's college tape was solid and the coaches said he really gets the game and understands it. The kind of guys that get it at a cerebral level and have the drive like he does usually come through. And if he doesn't, maybe Jalil comes through or maybe we extend Toler. Not the end of the world.

Did you watch the HoF game? Did you see Trae Waynes? Dude was terrible. 3 flags against him and looked completely out of his element and he was a high first rounder. Vikes are fine with it because he's a project. I agree with you that I expected Smith to come out a bit more polished but will reserve judgement until I see him out there during preseason.

I agree with you, lets see what happens in the preseason. I'm a paranoid guy, so I worry when there aren't instant results. Plenty of time for him to get it. Yeah, Waynes was bad as well, that's something to calm me down, thanks!

  9. a late 2nd is basically a 3rd round pick. mariota hasnt thrown a pick in TC. what does that tell you about TC. im gonna wait and see how smith does in a game

As I said in an earlier post, I will see how he does in a game as well. Mariota is proving why he was the 2nd pick btw. It won't be that easy for real, I agree, but for any rookie, this is the first test to show you are good and belong on the team. D'Joun needs to step up.

  10. Can't see him being worse than Werner who's a former 1st rounder

CB is the hardest position to learn as a rookie aside from QB

You really have it out for Werner lol. We'll see what happens with D'Joun. I don't think he has any clue what he's doing right now though.

  11. a third round pick isnt much of a bust.

He's basically our 2nd round pick, traded down 4 spots to the 1st pick of the 3rd round. I said huge bust because we could literally figure it out before the season starts if he continues this pattern in preseason. The only caveat to this is that Jalil Brown is doing great and he might turn out to be the CB we wanted D'Joun Smith to be.

  12. I can remember Terrance Newman as a young corner getting roasted quite a bit.  Kareem Jackson finally came around after about 2 seasons, but we all know he was getting killed in the beginning.  Plus you have to understand most teams 4th and 5th receivers normally aren't anywhere near as talented as what you will face with the Colts.  Just about every guy he's facing outside of Bray really should be no less than a #2 receiver if not #1. Takes a bit of practice and experience but I think Smiths light will come on as the season progresses.  Quan Bray has had a really good camp so it's not surprising especially when you have Luck or Hasslebeck throwing the ball to him.  They know how to put it in there just right!  Give him a little time I think

Yeah, I'll definitely give him some time. I'm just a bit shocked is all.

  13. I am sorry but Bortles does not sustain drives, Hoyer does, and that is probably because of experience. Houston's O-line is better than that of the Jags, which is a big reason that their run game does better. Hopkins and Strong, as a group are better, IMO. Jaelen Strong will be the Keenan Allen of a few years ago that fell to round 3 similarly. Watch him take off during the middle of this year. Jags' wide outs may have talent but not the chemistry with the QB, which is a big reason their production on the field does not match their talent, IMO. Julius Thomas is better than Garrett Graham, I will give you that but the same chemistry issue with a young QB will come up unless Bortles goes like Matt Ryan did with Tony Gonzalez in his rookie year (Tony said, just throw it to me when in doubt, and it worked for a while :)).

No one mentioned O-Line, and you also left out RB. Hoyer is horrible, he's a poor man's Alex Smith at best. Bortles was a rookie and had a group of rookie WR's his first year. He now has a solid TE in Julius Thomas, a group of WR's with a year of experience and he has a year of experience with a highly drafted RB. They won't be any threat to us or anything, but they will probably split with the Texans. I bet Mallett has a 50/50 chance of starting over Hoyer. Strong is a unknown entity right now, he may be great or a complete bust. Graham is average at best. They have hopkins to carry the load until someone steps up. Hoyer is horrible, there is a reason Andre left Houston.

  14. Jared, you are certainly well within your right to believe that it is a honor to play in the NFL & you can't jeopardize that good standard of living by drinking, taking drugs, or striking a woman you claim to love. I get that, but let's not create the illusion that Rice has had problems off the field other than the elevator incident with booze, weed, violence, or reckless driving. We have to view each criminal infraction on a case by case basis.

Too many people love to live in this perfection bubble where they think I would never do that or have a zero tolerance policy about mistakes that quite frankly is just a plateau that few individuals can hope to attain & even if they did, your gonna be alone on your own isolated perch.

I understand your frustration that superior athletes due to their talents are often afforded passes that ordinary civilians may not receive & that their lucrative salaries provide them access to the best legal representation money can buy but at the end of the day if we threw every criminal in jail & threw away the key there wouldn't be many law abiding citizens left roaming the streets. Now, just to be clear, rapists, serial killers, & child sexual assault criminals need to be behind bars for as long as humanly possible IMO, but for most people who made 1 terrible decision & that's it prison makes the person worse not better & it masks the problem vs solve it in a meaningful way perpetuating longterm change.

This country has the military industrial complex & the prison industrial complex & neither entity tends to foster lasting change for the better on a massive scale.

Thanks for the well written response, you are a solid poster and am always glad to talk with you. I do feel that that punishment is too light for crimes in this country, but i also disagree that prison makes things worse. It is supposed to be a punishment for criminals (light and heavy) to teach them not to commit another crime. It doesn't work though, when the athletes spend only a few hours and get bailed out. They feel invincible after that and do it over, they need a reality check. The NFL doesn't provide it either. That's why you see so much crime from NFL players IMO. I think we just have to agree to disagree on this one.

  15. You guys are way off about the Jags skill positions. They dwarf the Texans all around. Bortles isn't the best qb by any means, but he blows Hoyer out of the water. He is still learning, and he will surprise this year IMO. TJ Yeldon is an unknown, but I'll take an unknown 2nd rounder over an unknown 6th rounder in alfred blue. The WRs are a wash IMO. The Jags have more depth, and the Texans have the best receiver of both teams in Hopkins. Strong will actually be the 2 IMO. The Jags have Robinson, Lee, Hurns, and 1 of them could easily break out. TE's, Julius Thomas is much better than Garrett Graham, not even close. The texans Def is better obviously, but that's not what this debate is about.

  16. Rookie cornerbacks almost always struggle. I wouldn't read too much into it. If he's getting torched in next years training camp then we can worry.

You may be right, but I've seen this type of talk from players before (his tweets). It's usually what they say to hide the fact that they are struggling and try to convince others they are getting it when in reality they are completely overmatched and have no idea what they are doing. If he improves in preseason, I'll lay off of him, but he has me worried as I don't think he's won a single battle with a WR so far. He got beat by Quan Bray! I'll give him time though, will be watching him Sunday for the first real test.

  17. Ray Rice should be in jail right now, not getting a second chance in the NFL. This so called justice system in America is borderline disgusting. People are committing crimes left and right and getting off with minimal time. Even 1st degree murder gets you life in prison the majority of the time instead of death. The Athletes like Ray Rice that commit crimes are the worst, they beat women, get DUI's and hit and runs, and so much more and rarely if ever get jail time. He should be in Jail for 5 years, not getting a 2 game suspension. That's how the NFL runs things though and what they think of these crimes. Basically encourages them to do it again without consequences. They won't go to Jail, and they'll get a 2 game suspension. Whooopeee. You see what Aldon Smith did? 5 arrests in 3 years. He should of been booted from the NFL permanantly after the 3rd one. Then he doesn't even get jail time after a 5th one, just 3 years probation from alcohol. The only way an athlete will go to jail or get punished is by killing someone, and that's what could happen if you give Ray Rice a 2nd chance. Shame on all of you who voted yes here.

  18. Apparently they need to work on some kind of groin exercises, seems to be a prevalent issue this camp!

LOL, it's just frustrating. For every person that returns to practice. 2 or 3 others get a nagging injury. It doesn't seem like a big deal, but they could miss a week of playing time if it was the regular season, and they also miss valuable practice time now. We always catch bad luck with them.

  19. We always have the most injuries every year it seems. I think we already have 10 already. Don't know if it's the conditioning staff or what or they are working too hard, but it consistently happens every year. So lucky there have been no major ones so far.

  20. I'm going to ask this one more time as no direct responses have been given.

What is the number one goal of a GM/and/or team to achieve successful longevity?

(hint: Superman has already indirectly answered this along with a couple others since my 1st attempt at this!)

I would guess without reading, build through the draft successfully and manage a team friendly salary cap.

  21. Donte Moncrief not out here running routes w/ WRs for 2nd straight day. He said on radio yesterday he'll be ready to go on Sunday #ColtsCamp

Donte Moncrief not out here running routes w/ WRs for 2nd straight day. He said on radio yesterday he'll be ready to go on Sunday #ColtsCamp

That's good news. If he's ready by Sunday, then everything's solid.

  22. He probably won't play Sunday. Sounds like they're letting the rookies and backups play most of the snaps come Sunday

Hasselbeck has been running with the 1's alot. Luck may not play either

That's fine with me, let Vontae rest and fully heal before playing. He has nothing to gain by playing in a preseason game. If Luck doesn't play it's fine as well, Hasselback is a solid backup that can still do well with our WR core and keep us competitive. I want to see how our offense looks Sunday and Hasselback can still do a great job. Looking forward to watching the rookies especially.
