- Might be a blessing in disguise, having both McCoy and Suh both available DT FA's. One might think they should sign sooner than later with an opportunity to play of a up and coming competitor and can compete now for a Championship, with either as the final piece to the puzzle. If we sign one of them, the other will be left looking for another team, unlikely with the upside of the Colts. I think a fair 2 year contract would be OK, with some incentives. If either focuses on their game, preparation and physical conditioning, he can be a solid player with the supporting cast we can provide.

Penny Hart, if he makes the team. I don't Lexington Thomas on the roster, maybe he didn't make it past the first mini-camp?

Since our previous biggest back is Wilkins at 216 lbs, and we have a scatback in Ny. Hines, I felt we could use another quality RB of the heavier frame and Ware at 5-10 229 lbs fits the bill, compact and stout. Although he had the 2017 injury, he had a decent 2018 season on a limited basis stat wise. Carrying 51 attempts, 246 yards, a solid 4.8 avg per carry. Also caught 20 passes, for 224 yards, 11.2 avg, excellent for a RB.
I was curious to see what kind of damage he did against us in the playoffs and he had no carries. He must have been hurt, I think, but not the same injury as 2017 again I hope/think, a temp injury.
If we keep Ware. Let Williams go. What about Penny Hart or Lexington Thomas, who I would like to see one of them kept. It would mean we keep Hart or Thomas for our practice squad or Jordan Wilkins goes to the practice sqaud. Again I like Wilkins, he showed his METL hanging tough against the big boys Alabama, he had our best avg per carry, that 50 yard run he had helped. His 2 fumbles hurt his stock, otherwise we would say he had an excellent rookie year instead of a good year.

I was note aware the Chargers were rated that high. I seen on TV the other day, the post-draft rating had the Chargers at #4 and Colts at #5. I'm going to the first game, Sept 8, at RoKIT field, Carson, LA, a 30,000 temp stadium until the state of the art LA Charges stadium is built. A 30,000 seat stadium, no seat can be that far away.
Anyway, someone said with our first 2 games being away game, if we can split and go 1-1 that first 2 games, we are in good shape. Well, I say lets start 1-0 and start this season right with a great away win against a quality opponent. It made me look at the Chargers draft little more. #2 Tillery is a big taller than normal DT, may play him some at DE. With their second rounder, they took a highly regarded safety, Nasir Adderly out of Delaware, #1 rated by Lindy's. To pair with last years #1 Derwin James. Regardless how highly regarded Adderly is, Reich and Luck will be test him for sure.

Good point about Lexington Thomas going up against 2nd or 3rd team defense Ohio St but they are still players wanting prove to their coaches they are capable. Was not aware Penny Hart may have been hurt when he ran the his 40, which may the reason it was not as fast as expected. That is what makes this forum a good thing, different perspectives and research.
For me, I would like to see Penny Hart or Lexington Thomas make the final 53 man roster or at least the practice squad. May the best man win if they decide to keep one of them.

- On another post I said Penny Hart appeared more impressive the another UDFA diminutive RB Lexington Thomas. The are both about the same same size at 5-8, Hart at 175, Thomas at 180, but Thomas is much faster and listed the 40 at 4.42 with one reported 4.29. Hart was good enough to be listed in Lindy's at a fair at best 4.62, especially considering his size but he seems to play faster.
Watching youtube highlights again of Lexington Thomas, I came away more impressed as he made some nice juke moves to get to the outside. Plus his competition was better, showed highlights of a few runs against Ohio St. where he scored a TD and did break out for a nice run against big dog Ohio St., and Thomas must have been a marked man as the main offensive weapon for UNLV. I think the Hart/Thomas gap is pretty close.
Also, I think Reich and Ballard realize a small breakaway player is an invaluable weapon, like a Darren Sproles or similarly Ny Hines. The can score from anywhere on the field. 300+ lbs DT are great but they can't score 50+ TD runs or reception. It may be an interesting keeper to have one of them make the team, to give us that added dimension, plus help in kick returns where we can be more explosive.

It seems like every year we bring in about 15 or so UDFA and 2-3 always make the team.
IMO the UDFA I'm most impressed with are, in no particular order:
CB Jamal Peters, 6-1 220, Lindy's has him projected as a 5th rounder and my be moved to safety
RB Marquise Young, 5-11 210, UMASS, he had some impressive runs on youtube highlights, had something like 3,600 career yards, 5.3 avg. Did not double check to verify. Could compete for 4th RB spot but I would like to see a big 230 lbs plus in our RB corp.
TE Hale Hentges, wearing number 84 sure resemble Jack Doyle a lot. Is Swoope gone, don't see him on our roster.
RB Penny Hart, 5-8 180, another with impressive plays on youtube. If only if was a little faster, listed at 4.62, he does play faster and has moves. Reich and Ballard seems to know the value of having a smaller breakaway guy. We have Ny Hines, one more similar breakaway type would be nice.
RB Lexington Thomas, 5-8, 175 like Penny Hart but with speed listed at 4.42, and I thought I seen a 4.29 on him but I thought Hart had better highlights on youtube.
WR Ashton Duhlin 6-1 214, 4.42, could not find highlights but read him dominated at low level competition, super longshot as our WR corp is crowded.

After reading more about Campbell and watching youtube highlights, the more I like the pick. He is not just as sprinter playing football. He is a football player with sprinter speed. He played RB in high school and it shows. I was wondering why his Avg per catch about 13 per catch, was related low for a WR with great speed. I see because OSU and Haskins threw a lot of short and underneath stuff to him and he did a good job holding on to the ball and running after the catch. I think coach Reich had some vision how to use him to utilize his speed and create mismatches and add more pressure on opposing defenses. We have TY, our big WR Funchess, and Campbell. Add TE Ebron and that is a mismatch nightmare for defenses.

Rigoberto can place kick and is pretty good at it. Still, they might bring a PK to not overwork both.

- I don't think OG Beau Benzschawel from Wisconsin was drafted. Per Lindy's, he was the preseason #1 rated OT and presently predicted as a 4th rounder. I would think he and Willis must have something that is not public to be taken off the boards.
Also our Marvell Tell III was the number ranked preseason safety by Lindy's.

I was joking with my wife that I'm making plans to go the our first game at the LA Chargers. I wasn't too serious, thinking they will be playing in the LA Coliseum which I heard parking is atrocious. Upon further review, I see the are playing in a temp location called ROKit Field in Carson, 30,000 capacity, until there new stadium is finished in 2020. I'm thinking with that size, no seat should be too far away and prices seam reasonable. Plus factoring going to Universal Studios to get that off my bucket list. Finally my favorite baseball the SF Giants is playing the Dodgers that weekend. I thinking about going with my wife of course. Giants/Dodgers on Friday, 6 Sept, Universal Studios, 7 Sept, and Climax with the Colts/Chargers, 8 Sept. The Giants are struggling right now but it is a long season and when the won 3 World Series in 5 years, the were never the favorite going in.
On another thought about our 3 prime time games, I thought we should have had 5 like the other top clubs of the year. It was mentioned elsewhere and I agree, having all 3 prime time games as away games is not fair to show the country the positive energy Indianapolis has with the home games, IMO.

Tarik Glenn made at least one Pro-Bowl, I was there for the 2007 Pro-Bowl, our Super Bowl winning year 2006 season, Super Bowl and Pro-Bowl in 2007. We had Manning, M. Harrison, R. Wayne, J. Saturday, and Tarik. Interestingly, DE's D. Freeney, and R. Mathis didn't make it that year but I remember they both made at the same time in another year.
Edgerrin James was not a Colt anymore, replaced by Addai and Rhodes at RB. M. Harrison barely played, caught a couple passes in the Pro-Bowl warm-up, he must have been injured. Reggie caught a long TD pass.
It was cool to have those Colt players introduced last with the announcer saying "From the Super Bowl Champions Indianapolis Colts", those 5 Colt plays walked on side by side onto the field. Too bad no defensive player was represented but if you remember, our run defense sucked in the 2006 season, but became formidable during the playoff run. Some things are just explainable?

I'd say Austin Collie. It's unfortunate he sustained multiple head injuries. I had a co-worker that found out I was a Colt fan, he was originally from Utah a BYU fan. He told me he and son would go to BYU games just to watch Austin Collie who let the nation in receiving his senior year.
For trivia, that same year we drafted RB Donald Brown, from UCONN who led the nation in rushing. So that draft year, we draft RB who led the nation in rushing and WR who led the nation in receiving. You can check but I think this statement is correct.

It's possible for himsto make an impact but he is will need a big 2nd year jump. The Colts will given him the opportunity. If he does not improve in the next 1-2 years, he may be playing for another team, if at all. That TD pass he dropped against KC in the playoffs does not help his outlook and off-season thoughts. Although it was meaningless as far the the outcome, it means something to someone who had a hard time coming off the practice squad.

Yes, I remember it being remembered as the "Blunder Bowl", I think I remember, they said there was 11 turnovers, did not verify if my memory is correct. I know we intercepted Cowboy QB at least twice, one by S Rick Volk who returned to the Dallas 3 yard line and RB Tom Nowatzki score for the 1 yd line. The other int was by MLB Mike Curtis to put use is position for the winning 32 FB by straight on WR/PK rookie Jim O'Brien. When he made it, I jumped just like he did and not realize until seen it later. Also All Rookie Dallas RB Duane Thomas fumbled on the 1 yr line as mentioned above. For out Colts, Mackey scored the fluke tip pass. We tried a flea flicker that did not flick and RB John Havrilak, and college QB threw a pass instead to the QB behind the line of scrimmage because of the pass rush to him, tried to throw it to TE John Mackey waiting for the pass and WR Eddie Hinton caught it on the run and almost scored but the ball was knocked out of his hand before the goal line and eventually went out the back side of the endzone, for a Dallas touchback, that sucked. Although Earl Morrall had a good game, he was intercepted once int the end zone, make you wonder if SB III was back again, and we also missed a PAT. Thus, the Blunder Bowl, but I enjoyed the victory no less.

That tip ball long TD to TE Mackey was legit. CB Mel Renfro did tip the ball. When showed on replay, the spin of ball increased when he tipped it. Yes, it was just a finger tip but that is all that was needed. I did not see the recent highlights but I remember seeing this SB specials every year before the SB. The saying was the Dallas Cowboys Doomsday Defense made Unitas pay dearly for his brief moment of SB glory. It may have been the Colts next possession when Unitas dropped backed, pocket collapsed and ran up the middle, was actually a pretty good run for a few yards instead of a loss but his was hit hard by MLB Lee Roy Jordon, he knocked Unitas out of the game with bruised ribs, to add insult to injury, Unitas fumbled and Dallas recovered.
Interestingly, back-up QB Earl Morrall came in, the Super Bowl III flop losing QB and showed a live passing arm to give the Colts offense a lift to help win the game. I remember reading an comical editorial picture which had Morrall saying to a reporter; "I'd like to thank Lee Roy Jordan for making this possible" or something to this effect.

I think we can add 4 solid players at least, with our #1, 2 #2's, and at least one top tier FA with our favorable salary cap status.
I'd go for a top flight WR, not average type WR for depth as we already have Inman, Pascal, Chester who would be solid #3, 4, and 5 WR for depth. We need a #1-2 type to complement TY Hilton.
Then I'd go for defense, I think another LB to complement Leanard and Walker. Walker was solid but he early in the year but he seemed to disappear at the end. Perhaps it was his injury or he hit the wall.
We have some guys coming back for injury and I'm interested to see what they can do.
WR Cain had gotten a lot of rave reviews but I would remain cautiously optimistic. He has yet to catch his first NFL pass, and he did have a season ended injury, I think requiring surgery.
He would be competing for the #3-5 WR spots.
DT Jihad Ward, look pretty before he got hurt. He was a 2nd draft choice of the Raiders, and he is still young at 24, 6-5 290 DT, who can provide an inside rush with good size.
S Mike Mitchell adds veteran savvy, and worth bringing back for a 1 year contract
S Matthias Farley contributor who adds depth and can start
OG Matt Slausen, if he cleared from his injury, he may want to comeback to enjoy our recent success ride and OL dominance, even if is to provide depth, that would be quality depth.

I like the idea of getting Vinny another SB ring before he retires. Although it is not a given he will retire after next, probably taking it 1 year at a time from here on out. Regardless, win one for Vinny. Unless he has a terrible year, he will be offered to kick for someone, if not the Colts.

We had a great defense that year and perhaps an even better defense the next year as promising 2nd year DL Billy Newsome replaced DT Billy Ray Smith. However, with lost to upstart Dolphins the next year in the AFC Championship game, 21-0, having an aged QB Johnny Unitas caught up to us. If Johnny U was in his prime, who knows.
Some Trivia notes:
Billy Newsome (that is how promising he was, he was more of a DE pass rusher but replaced Billy Ray Smith at DT who retired after our SB win. I remember the defesne was so relaxed and dominating, Newsome and Bubba Smith would sometimes switch in and out at DE/DT, remember Bubba was initially drafted at a DT, then was moved to DE) was traded along with a 4th rounder to New Orleans for the 2nd pick in the draft and QB Bert Jones.
In our Super Bowl win of Dallas 16-13, the turning point was I think in the 2nd quarter, Dallas was up 13-0, they had the ball on our 1 yard line and RB Duane Thomas fumbled and the Colts recovered. If they had made a TD, it would have been 20-0 in favor of Dallas. Even coach Tom Landry said, he was not sure of the Colts could have comeback from a 20-0 deficit. Dallas did not score the remainder of the game, we had a great defense.
Our unsung hero was right DE Roy Hilton, 6-6, 240, he was applying consisted pass rush for his side, opposite All-Pro LDE Bubba Smith. Out 3 LB's was arguably the best in the NFL at the time.
ROLB Ted Hendricks in the 2nd year, enroute to a Hall of Fame Career, I was dissapointed when we traded him. I remember Bubba saying in his rookie year after he got the flu and lost weight, before Hendricks was drafted by the Colts, Bubba said he lost so much weight he almost looked like Ted Hendricks. Interested they became team mates on a great defense, both at 6-7 height, but Bubba at 290-300 lbs, Hendricks at 215 lbs.
MLB Mile Curtis when from an All-Pro OLB to a Pro-Bowl MLB, he a rough, instinctive, and a winner.
OLB Ray May, similar to Hilton, was solid, athletic converted MLB from Pittsburgh to become a solid OLB for us. He did fill in a few games at MLB when Curtis got hurt and did not miss a beat.

Yes, started the season with Luck having full confidence in his shoulder. During the first few games, he seemed to very cautious, throwing mostly short passes. Although he was throwing an insane amount of passes on a couple of those games, still was mostly short. He should open the year will full confidence. However, hopefully not like his last game against KC, but we are looking forward now. Maybe with an addition of another top flight WR via FA or the draft to go along with TY. Inman looks look solid and is a keeper, his CFL experience, winning the Grey Cup helps, he is a solid professional WR. Hopefully Pascal makes the big 2nd jump in provement. Inman and Pascal give us good size at WR. Inman at 6-3 205 and Pascal at 6-2 219, to complement the 5-10 183 TY Hilton. I remember one of announcers saying how big Inman and Pascal was when he spoke to them before the KC game.

Both will continue to improve considering they are relatively new to competitive football. Cox is a little heavier and a better blocker. Cox besides that spectacular 1 hand grad TD against Oakland has not caught a lot of passes. However, when he did, he seemed to have pretty good run after the catch ability. Swoope is a dangerous downfield receiver for a TE and also has a knack for catching TD's, like Ebron. I was disappointed when we let Swoope go and pleased when we re-signed. Hopefully, his injury is resolved by mini and training camp. Especially if Doyle is unable to return, whom I like a reliable TE for us, as long as he stops fumbling.

OK Colts Nation, our 2018 season is over.
Congrats to the KC Chiefs, I do hope the beat the Pats and go on to win the Super Bowl.
To reflect back, anybody who talked playoffs at preseason or at 1-5 would have been called *s by many here on this forum.
I always think we have a chance until mathematically eliminated.
Anyway, even though we loss, about half the expert announcers thought we would beat the Chiefs as we can't that bad.
If we played a good game, who knows but again given the Chiefs the credit the deserve and like us, their future looks bright, especially with their shinning star QB Mahomes.
The season is over, we have a lot of cap space, an extra early 2nd round draft choice from the Jets and looks like we will also get a 4th round compensatory pick for losing Moncrief to free agency.
Just a small note, our 5th WR Fountain, missed that wide open pass for a TD towards the end of the 4th quarter. Although meaningless, the score would have been 31-20 instead of 31-13. Maybe that's why he stayed on the practice squad all year. He will be thinking about that all off-season, hopefully he makes the 2nd year jump in improvement. We had a good year, I would like to have seen us play better in our last game though.

I agree, as bad as we being outplayed, we had a chance in the 4th quarters, especially when D. Leonard got that fumble, I thought we would surely score a TD. However, Luck for some phantom reason, continued his ineptitude play. You can give KC credit but if Luck played well, who knows?

First, unfortunate to a novice or average fan, not fanatics like us. Many may have watched this Nationally televised playoff game to watch the hype of the great Andrew Luck. To the average fan, the will come away saying Luck did not show them anything and is overrated, based on the Chief game alone.
Someone said they wonder about his shoulder because he seem to be lobbing to ball more like against the Texans and Titans. I made post last week about that but I felt he was doing that on purpose as a touch pass because he was dropping it in nicely, and these we mid range to deep passes.
The Texans 2nd half was similar to the Chiefs game but not quite as bad but the Colts were in preserve the lead/win mode.
Luck is our QB and he had a great year, especially after the 1-5 start, he really started to play well and I hope he did not re-injure his shoulder based on the yesterday's game.
Luck did seem glassy eyed, as someone else said, "a dear in the headlights look" and unfortunately, I agree. Young Mahomes schooled him in comparison from and mental and physical standpoint. It was a team loss but Luck's poor performance was the #1 factor. When we win he gets the most glory and when we lose same thing but in this case it was obvious.

IMO, he seemed to struggle as a rookie when I first seen him play, then as he got more experience, things have must have slowed down for him, became more comfortable, and had a solid year in 2018. Hopefully he continues to improve and is our stud smaller DB mixed with our other DB's with good size.
