I honest to goodness don’t see why every year at draft time, everyone is enamored with strong armed guys that aren’t accurate or strong arm and can’t read a defense. Haven’t we learned by now?  These guys become first read guys or they throw lots of interceptions and incompletions. You need accuracy and reading defenses to be great.

You are so right.  Always a guy like Eason or even Love that has great physical skills, isn't very accurate, but we think once they get to the NFL they will suddenly be that.  Rarely, if ever, happens.

  2. Bert (not Burt, Birt, or Burnt) was an amazing QB.  Won MVP and really lit up the league in a time when it was much harder to pass.  He was a warrior and great QB who had his career cut short by injuries.

I think it is unfair to classify Andrew Luck as anything less.  So many people say he quit on the Colts 2 weeks before the season opener.  But he clearly wasn't going to be playing anytime soon so what difference did it make?  If he went on IR would he be more of a warrior?  Its not like he was suiting up Week 1.  He also played with some major injuries.  I think he just got tired of hurting and having to answer questions that he had no answers to.

I would say Jones and Luck were about even as QBs.

  3. I am still having a hard time understand how anyone sees a brighter future for Brissett.  He has started essentially two years under different coaches and has had the same result.  Think of any young QB that came into the league that became good or great.  They make mistakes at first but you see those flashes.  Manning was terrible with interceptions as a rookie but you could see him come on as the season went along.  Luck made his mistakes but you could see him rising when behind.  Brissett, after two years, has shown nothing.  For those pointing out they were 5-2, remember we had a weak schedule and some fortunate bounces.  We were not that good.

It seems to me we have a double standard with Brissett.  If Quincy Wilson doesn't practice well, he is in the doghouse and never plays.  If Jonathon Williams doesn't do well starting in second game and he is benched.  But Brissett can bomb and gets week after week, year after year.

Ok, I'm gonna do a one-eighty today regarding Josh Rosen.  I've always thought that he was badly done by from the Cardinals, and I wanted them and their new QB, Kyler Murray to crash and burn because of it.

    However.

Take a look at the comparison between Josh Rosen and Kyler Murray in their rookie years with Arizona:

    Rosen: 217-393, 55.22%, 2278 yds, 11 TD, 14 INT, 45 sacks, 10 fumbles, 5 lost, 66.7 QB rating

    Murray: 323-500, 64.6%, 3397 yds, 18 TD, 10 INT, 47 sacks, 3 fumbles, 0 lost, 87.9 QB rating

The Cardinals clearly improved their QB situation.  As much as I thought they screwed Rosen, it looks like they made a correct choice.

    Sorry, Rosen.

Good analysis but not sure that is fair.  The Cardinals had perhaps one of the worst coaching staffs I have ever seen last year.  OC fired in middle of season.  Entire staff fired after one year.  The Cards were much upgraded this year by trading for Kenyan Drake and bringing in more offensive lineman.  They also had a solid draft.  Not saying that Murray won't end up the better QB, but I think had Rosen played this year in Arizona with what they have, I believe he would have done better as well. But just an opinion :)

I like Jordan Love better than those 3. Fromm and Rosen stink and Foles is made of glass. I would take JB over those 3.

What is cool is we all have our opinions and no one is more legit than anothers.  I totally disagree. I think Jordan Love is a very physically gifted player who makes terrible decisions. He is like a more athletic Jameis Winston.  Too turnover prone.  I think Fromm has real potential.  Rosen if we could get for like a 5th would be an interesting gamble.  And I would take Nick Foles over JB any day.  JB has had two years to show that he can't get it done.

If we win Sunday we will be 4-2, second in the division and one bad loss from making the playoffs. We left seven points on the field in an overtime loss to the Chargers. An average kicker wins that game for us. At Pittsburgh our backup QB throws a pick six as we are driving to go up two scores early and then our kicker, again misses a XP and later a chip shot FG that would have won the game. Then against Miami our backup QB stinks up the place and loses to one of the worst teams in the NFL. So three games that we should have won, none of which could be blamed on JB. We win those we are hosting a playoff game.

I'll give him an off season to prepare as the starter, and let's see what he can do with a full compliment of healthy receivers before we decide he is Johnny Manziel, and move on with an untested mid round draftee or a washed up past his prime FA like Andy Dalton.

So then we get into the playoffs and get crushed.  Is that a successful season?  Isn't the idea to win the Super Bowl?  My point is we can argue that we should have a few more wins, but does that change how Brissett has looked on the field?  Two years and little offense.  The sooner we move on the better.

  7. I guess the question I have is what warranted this hype for Brissett?  He was a 3rd round pick of the Patriots.  Most of the time, 3rd round QBs don't amount to much more than a backup QB with a few exceptions.  Secondly, when he did play in 2017, it was an offense that could hardly ever score.  He held the ball too long and would never take chances.  So going into 2019, why did anyone think he had somehow become a franchise QB just because the GM and coach backed him?  They had to!  What other choice did they have?  If you look back at my posts, I have said since before and during the season he isn't very good. Even when his numbers were better and we were winning, I said he wasn't good.  Teams finally figured out if you crowd the line, you can take away the running attack and his check downs.

Again, why did this result surprise anyone?  What would shock  me if if we go into another year with him as the only viable option.

  8. Jacoby, my all accounts, sounds like a great guy.  People like him, teammates like him.  He works hard and he is driven.  That doesn't make a good NFL QB.  Tim Tebow, by all accounts, outworked everyone and was loved by teammates.  That doesn't translate to being a good QB.  I explained to a friend one time that only a handful of people can look over a defense in 3 seconds and throw an accurate ball against an NFL defense that leaves little openings. Doesn't matter how physically gifted you are.  Almost any QB in the NFL, regardless of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd string, can usually make a throw behind a good line and running attack. I remember years ago David Garrard was the QB of the Jags and had like 16 TDs and 3 Interceptions.  It is because they were a running team.  When he was forced to throw much, he couldn't get it done.

Look, Ballard loves Clayton Geathers.  But Gathers playing time got cut way short.  We can't apply a different standard to Brissett.

  9. I think some of your are missing the point of my post.  Josh Rosen was considered a very good passer coming out of college.  My second favorite team is the Cardinals so I watch them almost every week too.  The coaching staff they had last year is one of the worst coaching staffs I have ever seen point together..  Their OC got fired halfway through his FIRST season with the team.  The entire staff was cleared out after one year.  I can't speak for the Dolphins as to why they trade a #2 for him and then hardly play him.

But the point is, if we aren't going to get one of the top QBs in the draft, I would rather see the Colts trade a 4 or 5 for Josh Rosen knowing there is a CHANCE he could develop rather than going another year with Jacoby Brissett who we know after two years won't get any better.   It's not a lot to give up for a heady guy who was very highly rated.

    The irony...

Josh Rosen - physical, mobile, inaccurate QB

Much like Manziel, he's an entitled *, who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, who thought he would come in with some status and be given a job. That's working out fantastic for him, just like it did for Manziel.  I think I'd rather see the Colts pay JB 18M/yr than get Rosen for free.

If you feel Josh Rosen is a physical, inaccurate QB, you are  watching different film than I am.  The fear for him in Arizona is that he wasn't mobile enough to run Kingsbury's offense.  Coming out of UCLA, he was considered a pure pocket passer who is very accurate.

At this point, I would rather bring Chandler Harnish back then endure another year of Brissett.  I would rather see a QB wing and and try to do something rather than checkdown and do nothing.

  11. Comparing him to Brissett is completely off base, IMHO.  Fromm is a very heady QB.  He goes through his progressions well and has a quick throwing motion.  Brissett locks onto receivers very quickly and doesn't progress through reads.  I would say Fromm is more like Alex Smith.  But remember that Alex Smith has been a much better QB than Jacoby Brissett ever was.

Fromm beat out two 5 star recruits who are now excelling at other schools.  He has won a lot of big games against teams more talented.  I am not saying he is Andrew Luck, but for where we will draft, I think he is the best beat.  Eason and Love are too inconsistent.

  12. I had some down time so I spent the last few days studying the QBs who would likely be available to the Colts to draft.  Just to give some background, I am a coach and have coached for over a decade.  After analyzing the QBs, their supporting casts, and results, I believe the best QB the Colts could draft in their spot is Jake Fromm.  Fromm is probably the smartest QB, has a very quick release, reads defenses well, and is mobile enough to slide in the pocket.  He has played winning football despite losing many players around him.  The issue with guys like Jordan Love or Jacob Eason is it is very rare that a player comes to the NFL and learns how to be accurate.  So I would not want the Colts to go with either of them.  So my hope is if we draft a QB, Jake Fromm is the guy.

  13. Not this argument again about mobile QBs as if it is something new. I seem to recall 1986 Randall Cunningham on the cover saying "Robo QB".  The future of the NFL.  Then Michael Vick.  They always claim mobile QBs are the way the NFL is, yet every year the guys better at throwing from the pocket always rule.  Andrew Luck was a pocket passer who could run.  I expect Lamar Jackson to last 2 years and defenses will figure him out.  See RGIII.  So predictable.

Again, I would rather have Josh Rosen over Jordan Love any day.  how many times do physical, mobile, inaccurate QBs fail in the NFL?

  14. Some of you might think I am crazy, but if the Dolphins pick a QB like Tua early in the draft and we could get Rosen for like a 5, I would love that. I know Rosen has not played great his first two years.  But do keep in mind he is 22 years old, was on two of the worst teams of the last two years, and has been through coaching hell.  He also has attributes that Reich likes.  He is definitely a pocket passer who is very accurate. I remember him coming out of college, hew as called the most pro ready QB since Andrew Luck.  I expect some team like New England will make a move to get him because he is loaded with potential.  I am not saying he is anything like Steve Young, but sometimes being drafted by a bad team and then going to a system that fits you better can turn a career around.

So my hope is the Colts can either have a guy like Tua fall into their lap, draft Fromm in 2nd, trade for Rosen, or sign Foles (assuming Jacksonville lets him go) as a bridge QB.  Just don't start Brissett another game please!

  15. IMHO, you are foolish if you think the Colts would actually be any better if a few kicks or breaks when their way.  So lets say they are instead 8-7 or 9-6.  So they sneak into the playoffs and get destroyed and people say "Well, Brissett got us to the playoffs. Let's build off of that". Is that what you really want?  I like winning titles, not saying we competed.   Some of you actually think 2 years of Brissett isn't enough and getting more players around him, he will suddenly become good?  You probably thought if Trent Richardson had another year he would have become a good RB too?

To those who think Brissett will get good, I challenge you with this.  Brissett was QB in 2017 and 2019 and we couldn't score.  Luck was QB in 2018 and threw 29 TDs.  Most of same players.  Different coach and GM.  The only constant is Brissett isn't very good.  Think about that.

  16. Ballard is a HUGE upgrade over Grigson.  Compare how many Ballard draft picks contribute on the team with upside versus Grigson.  Compared the failed truckload of Grigson free agents to the handful that Ballard brought in.

I think people get a skewed opinion because of the Luck situation.  Luck basically saved Grigson.  Had Brissett been the QB under Grigson the entire time, I think 5-11 would have been the norm.  Ballard built a team to compliment Luck, not Brissett.  He was handed a tough situation.  I don't think it is close.

Now, I will say that how Ballard approaches the QB position will probably define his legacy. If he goes another year with Brissett with no draft pick QB to groom, then I think he is a failure.  If he goes after someone like Jordan Love, who is a more athletic Brissett, he is a failure.  We don't need more QBs who have all the physical gifts but are inaccurate.  If he can get Luck to return or find a gem in the draft, trade for a player like Josh Rosen who does have potential, or get a free agent like Nick Foles as a bridge QB, I think he will be okay.

  17. If they parade Brissett out there next year without a developmental QB ready to take over, I think we are looking at another 6-10 year.  Watching the Colts with Brissett at QB for almost two full years now is pathetic.  They can't score no matter who is the coach, GM, or receivers.
