Also just curious- how many QBs that started the season played all the games?

Has to be less than half the league, right?

Off the top of my head, that I'm certain of, there were at least 17 teams that had a backup play this year. That's not counting backups of backups of backups like Minnesota.

Actually now that I think about it more in the AFC only the Bills, Chiefs, Ravens, and Dolphins didn't have a backup play. If that's right then 75% of AFC teams used a backup this year.

    That's crazy.

  2. Not yet IMO

Mahomes right now is in the Pats Tom Brady camp - all-time QB paired with one of the greatest coaches of all time. Its hard for me to just discount the value of Andy Reid considering the success he's had with different QB's and organizations.

Tom Brady winning in Tampa without Belichick cemented him as the #1 QB in my mind. Peyton winning in Denver and Indy is still more impressive than the postseason success of Mahomes with Reid.

I hear that but given that two players on those two teams suffered knee injuries, it does not look good at all. Is it just a coincidence that the two teams that have "kneecaps" written by their logo are the two teams that lost players to knee injuries?

Ahh... I see your point. I didn't put that together because I only heard Dan's press conference in my head when I read the sign. Good point that sign maybe isnt as tasteful as I thought it was.

I want the Lions to win but there is one player on their team that I think is a dirty player, Kirby Joseph. He goes after players' knees and has been involved in head to head plays. He ended Tyler Higbee's season as well as that of TJ Hockenson by hitting them below the knees.

    I agree with JJ here:

That sign has nothing to do with the opponents or even the Lions players. That sign is calling back to Dan Campbell's 1st press conference when he said (paraphrasing); this city and this team have been knocked down but we're going to get back up and on the way up we're going to bite a kneecap, then when we get knocked down again we're going to take the other kneecap, knock us down a third time and we're going to take a hunk out of them."

Absolutely nothing wrong with that sign imo.

  5. Pittman is far too good to let go but he is not elite imo.

Elite = the defense's best CB and usually additional help from another defender (Jefferson, Hill, Lamb)

Great = the defense's best CB (Pittman, Wilson, Metcalf)

Out of all the WR's on the OP list only about 6-7 are elite the rest are great. If you let Pittman go where are you going to go to upgrade the position? The elite guys aren't free agents, the rest of the other great WRs will command the same money as Pittman, or you draft someone with a premium pick.

Stick with Pittman and hope a quality QB and better players around him will let him be elite.

  6. In my mind sustaining success in the NFL is like three sides of a triangle: Coaching, GM, and Quarterback and you need all three to have a stable structure.

The bad teams have one or none, the continually good teams have two, and the SB contenders have all 3:

The 49ers have had coaching and GM for 4-5 years. Add a QB this year that could equal all 3 and a SB win.

We thought the Eagles had all three but it's looking like the coaching arm may have left last year.

The Colts had all 3 with Manning, Polian, and Dungy.

The Pats with Brady, Belicheck and Belicheck. The Pats lost two sides in Brady and GM Belicheck and they now suck.

Every once in a while, a team can win with just 2 of the 3 but its very rare and its typically because their okish QB played like an all-timer (Flacco, Eli, etc).

WRs only. At least 40 targets.

    Rank -- player -- targets -- YAC/REC

    27 -- Mike Evans -- 99 -- 4.4

That is a shock. I would have bet big money that he'd be in the top 5.

Thanks for pulling this together and posting it.

    FWIW:

ESPN analytics puts the Colts chances at about 56 percent.   I think the Colts were 3rd most likely of 8 teams.   I believe the Colts were behind only Houston and Cleveland.

If that plays out that'd be 3 AFC South teams in the playoffs. Pretty good for a terrible division 🤪

If you put Andrew Luck (2012-2014 Luck) in his prime on this team Ballard has built now, we win 11 or 12 games every year. It is about the QB. Had Luck not retired, Ballard would be a God here in Indy and probably ranked by most a top 5 GM out there, like Polian was with Peyton.

Which team would be terrible with Andrew Luck as their starting QB in his prime? Saying Ballard would be great with Luck in his prime isn't saying anything at all about Ballard's ability to build a team, it's saying his results are solely dependent on an all-world QB like Luck.

John Schneider, Brad Holmes, and John Lynch are putting up results without all-world QB's right now whereas Ballard is not. At some point, the commentary on Ballard has got to stop being excuses and start being results but some refuse to do that because his results, frankly, are poor.

  10. Aren't wins/losses and playoff appearances exactly a measure of his drafting and player-acquisition skills?

I can understand being handed a bad deal for a very small amount of time when he started but the time for excuses is over. It's almost like the Colts are the only ones in the NFL with QB problems or the need to overcome a tough situation.

I don't hear anyone saying the 49ers should fire their GM even though they're on their 247th QB in 4-5 years due to injury and they're making moves and winning games with a 7th-round QB. What about the Eagle? They had a "franchise" QB and moved on to another QB that's now an MVP caliber player. The Lions traded away their franchise QB and now a couple of years later are one of the best teams in the league all built around 3-4 years of solid drafts. The other side of that trade netted the Rams a Superbowl win by being bold and drafting talented players at positions that really matter.

Sure we can say Ballard is an OK GM but that's clearly not good enough in the NFL, his vision clearly isnt bold enough, and his drafts arent effective enough to translate to wins when other GMs seem to do exactly that. If the measure of success is mediocrity (at best) than Ballard is doing great. If the measure is anything more than that I dont see how anyone can defend him.

they also play different roles, Downs isn't pulling the outside corners, he's in the slot and is good at what he does, and he gets targeted more vs backers, safeties, and third corners. . outside passes are completed at a lower rate naturally.

both are different players, not sure why we are comparing them this way

Different roles in this offense but they both run routes, both battle defenders, both make catches, and both break tackles and last week Down's was objectively better.

The Colts currently have 4 losses. Nobody finds it odd that Pittman says he isn't a large enough part of the offense after this particular loss in which he was outperformed by Downs? I wonder why he didnt say this after the Jags loss when he had 100+ yards?

Pittman had 2 catches.  One was a 75 yard td.  I would say he did the most with his opportunities

A bit selective especially when drawing a comparison...

Pittman 2 catches on 5 targets for 83 yards. 75 yard TD pass

Downs 5 catches on 6 targets for 125 yards. 59 yard TD pass

Pittman may have done something with his 2 catches, but as I said, Down's did more with his opportunities than Pittman.

  13. Pittman was like a good-looking kid in 11th grade who had his run of the girls because he was the only good-looking guy in school. Enter Downs and suddenly the girls aren't solely focused on Pittman anymore and his ego/feelings are taking a hit because of it.

Sure it could be due to a loss but it's certainly unusual timing for him to say he's "not a big part of the offense" on the day Down's was clearly better and did more with his opportunities than Pittman.

They all have started to feel just like sports entertainment to me, kinda WWE vibes. What's in the script...? Then they want to do a PR campaign about a skit for the season...

Those commercials tell me the NFL hears the buzz that the refs are fixing games and they thought leaning into it in a joking way would make people laugh it off. Id prefer full-time refs, instant verification of penalties with less than 2 minutes, instant verification of penalties on 4th down, more refs on the field, more training for the refs, etc over joking about it but I'm also not NFL PR.

  15. I voted no on all counts mostly because it would require dozens (if not hundreds) of people to pull it off and there is absolutely zero chance someone wouldn't talk. However, I also believe more and more people would vote yes and that's a disturbing trend for the league. A vast majority of my friends and fantasy football league members believe the NFL is using refs to fix games. I'll grant you that 15-20 people in my circle doesn't move the needle but if that same percentage is true in other circles the NFL had better figure this out asap.

  16. In the interest of dispelling quite a few misconceptiosn I'm seeign about Jeudy here is a comparison to Pittman

     AGE:  Jeudy 24   Pittman 26

     DRAFT YEAR: 2020 for both

GAMES PLAYED: Jeudy 45   Pittman 51

     YARDS:  Jeudy 2503    Pittman 2807

     TDS: Jeudy 9    Pittman 12

    Jeudy is not old.

If hes a bust so is Pittman.

Jeudy has had bad QB play.

    Jeudy is not always injured.

I'm not saying the Colts should get him (I'd love it if they did) but hes not most of the things I've seen mentioned here.

Jeudy is just meh to me.... Once thought to be a game changer coming out of college but he's been more of a solid piece and we already have enough of that in our receiver room.

If you look at their careers Jeudy and Pittman have basically the same production. Not sure if you consider that good or not but it's fair to say neither has had elite QB play (minus 1 year with Rivers for Pittman). I'd be thrilled if we could get him. It'd either put Pierce out or make him step up.

If we can weather the storm until he returns Shane Steichen has to near the top of the list for COTY.

Unless someone can slow down the 49ers nobody is beating Shanahan for COTY.

They're 5-0 and 1 team only lost by 7, a second team lost by 19 and the other 3 have been greater than 20 point wins.

One team has scored 20+ points on them and nobody has held them under 30 on offense.

We do have great (and noisy) fans, and we do ebb and flow with the energy of the team.  I try to do my part, but now that I’m in my 50’s, too much yelling gets me light headed and I’m afraid I’ll pass out and fall over the edge!

Id be sad if anyone fell over the edge bbbbuuuutttt....that could be a "win this one for Breeze" moment this team needs to really gel.

I got absolutely trashed on Reddit for wanting Stroud and Richardson over Young.

I'll die on my hill and say I'd rather have 9 games of AR over 17 with Young.

Really? So to extrapolate that out youd take 9 years of AR over 17 years of Stroud? Based on what you've seen?

    No way I believe that.

  21. I love AR so far but saying he's played 1.5 less games than the other 2 rookies is not a feather in his cap.

If this trend continues to the end of the year, I would 1000000% rather have 17 games of Stroud than 9 games of AR. He may be amazing but if he can't stay on the field it's irrelevant.

Well so far it’s the Jalen Hurts model which is working right now.  I think every team would prefer a Mahomes or a Brady or a Manning, but those guys are incredibly rare.

I think teams are willing if they have to to burn and churn QBs a little.  Hurts and Newton were a ball bounce away from winning Superbowl s.

there are more guys who can run than sit in a pocket and be great.  Mahomes couldn’t move well last year and won.  Many posters here could beat Brady in a foot race.

i agree that the ideal is not to run your QB but the alternative is basically to hope you get Brady or to hope you get Mahomes.

I can’t imagine that AR is ever going to be a pocket first passer.  He’s got to run or he isn’t likely a guy that will be effective enough to win championships.

If you knew AR was only going to play 6 years but that he would win a SB and play in another would you draft him?  I would in a millisecond.

AR has to learn how to protect himself though or he won’t last.  His head bounced hard again once in the 1st Q or so.  He goes down hard.

Good point, running is vital to AR's game and he will take some hits as part of it.

I think my Luck scar tissue makes me wince every time AR runs and gets hit. That's a me problem and I need to get over that.

The Bears are not playing WR Chase Claypool today after they traded for him at the deadline last year.  He’s a healthy scratch and is not happy in Chicago.  In the doghouse as the saying goes with the coaches.   I wonder if the Bears would offer him to the Colts as part of a package for Taylor.  Ballard was trying to get a receiver from the Dolphins and Packers when they were talking.  I’m thinking the Bears just might make the call.

I saw it suggested that Claypool could be had for a 5th or 6th round pick. I seem to recall he's got a bad attitude but I'd at least figure out if thats situational and can be fixed.
