  1. Thank you Dark_Indy.  I am glad I did not just go on a rant.  I believe I have seen all sides of this topic.

I know how it works better now, and I know people of all ages love to play it.  I just wonder how many do actually learn the game.  I learned from buckling up the chinstrap.  That usually helps the defense :)

Yeah, unfortunately the majority that play "simulation" football are in the minority. Punting on fourth down and using play action are nearly unheard of in regular matchmaking. Though, to be honest- I'm ok with you throwing it deep four times on every drive. It's just more points for me.

  2. I do not mind being wrong.  I just think there are a lot of fat kids sitting at home playing Madden.  I think it is great they can be in a mode to learn the game too, I just think 'most kids' jump into it just with their favorite players and play games that are 55-55 with 2 minutes left.  The 'action is the attraction as I like to say.'

I love it that you in particular have used it as part of learning the game.  That is a great thing!!   :)

Thing is though, Offense is easy in Madden. Being able to defend is the hard part. Once you get that down, the score is generally 55-0 and they're going for it on every 4th down, oh look another pick six

  3. Because there's this thing called.....   a salary cap.

There are only so many proven players you can get on one roster.   And then you need to fill out that roster with lesser, inexpensive players who you hope can contribute at a decent level.

This, but, I have to add to it.

Ben Heenan is proven, just not in our league. So is Duron Carter. I have no problems with the signings from the CFL. Heenan and Carter are both still young and considered rookies, but they have more experience than any incoming rookies because of their years in the CFL.

Signing these two guys (Carter and Heenan) is like having a couple of extra fourth round picks. Good project talent at Guard and Wide Receiver at standard rookie contracts. Can't be mad either way.

  4. That was Wisniewski's slotted rookie contract, not an indication of his value. He'll be a free agent, someone will offer him a decent contract. He might get $6m/year, I just don't think it makes sense, especially for us. I know our team has ongoing issues at center, but it's really not that hard to find a capable guy. It's the least physically demanding position on the line. I think Holmes is going to be the guy.

I'm going to do a mock at some point. I've been thinking through a bunch of different strategies about how to best address the need at OL. It's the single biggest issue facing the offense, and if it gets fixed, it makes the entire team better right away.

Problem is, the best lines are typically home-grown, not bought. The Eagles were able to take a cheap vet and watch him turn into one of the best linemen in the league, but their line is mostly a collection of unheralded talent from over here and over there. Their highest drafted guy went in the third round, and their best lineman was a UDFA. And those guys have been together for a while now. The Packers are mostly a bunch of 4th and 5th round guys; Bulaga and Sherrod were first rounders, but Sherrod missed most of this season, yet the Packers had one of the best pass blocking lines in the league.

The Cowboys have three first rounders (and two of the three are still cheap), but that's not the norm. And Leary and Parnell were UDFAs, and Free was a 4th rounder.

So sometimes it just takes time and patience. But we don't really have a true RT on the roster right now, assuming Cherilus is gone. Lots of competition at guard and center, which is a good thing, but it needs to get settled at some point. I think signing a RT would be smart, as it would allow us to develop a mid to late round guy who can fill in at guard and eventually take over on the outside.

I'm not disagreeing with you- but it's disheartening to watch as year after year the offensive line picks/FA's the Colts select are terrible.

Since 2012 (And not even comprehensive)

    Winston Justice

    Samson Satele

    Mike McGlynn

    Hugh Thornton

    Khaled Holmes

    Donald Thomas

    Gosder Cherilus

    Xavier Nixon

    Jack Mewhort

    Ulrich John

    Jack Breckner

    Phil Costa (Jerk)

    Jonathon Harrison

    Lance Louis

Out of those 14 guys, Gosder (when healthy) and Mewhort were the only two guys that showed any promise (Holmes hasn't shown enough, but still more than Harrison and Thornton is garbage), and Gosder was signed to a bonkers deal after he already had injury issues. (That's already been discussed to death here though, so I'll digress.) That's a 14% success rate for Offensive linemen for the Colts in two years. That's flat discouraging.

  5.

    Here's my problem with that.

    Player         2015         2016         2017        2018         2019Cherilus      $2.9m       $5.8m       Castonzo      $6.0m       $6.5m $7.0m $7.5m $8.0mWisniewski $5.5m $6.0m $6.0m $6.5m FA Tackle $3.5m $4.0m $4.5m $5.0m Mewhort $0.8m $1.0m $1.1mTOTAL $18.7m $23.3m $18.6m $19.0 $8.0m

    1) That's not economical. It's a lot of money to pay for 80% of your starting OL. We don't have a RG in that calculation, and we don't have the bench in that calculation. (I'm assuming an extension for Castonzo, rather than keeping him on the Year 5 option at $7.4m. That actually saves you $1.4m in 2015.)

    2) We'd be tossing aside low paid young guys at the least physically demanding position in the league, to sign an average starting center to a top ten contract.

    3) As I stated in #2, I think Wisniewski is average, not worth $6m/year.

I think it's critical that we fix the offensive line. Key word being "fix," with no qualifier. Not 'try to fix,' not 'do all we can to fix,' but FIX it, finally. It's been too long that the Indianapolis Colts have had a substandard offensive line, for a myriad of reasons. So it's not that I think we should be cheap with the offensive line. But I do think we need to be smart. We need quality players, yes, but we also need depth, and we need to develop young guys. And we still have to be mindful of the future need to re-sign the four key guys from the 2012 draft.

Hell, offer Wiz 2 Mil a year. He's refusing to take a contract from Oakland, and he's only 25 with starting experience. That will still double his money that he was making (last contract 4 years 4 mil and change). He's an upgrade over Holmes/Harrison/Shipley at Center.

Speaking of Holmes, I think if we sign a center, we can shift him over to RG and replace Thornton.

Who do we grab at RT? It's getting likely that Cherilus is done. However, Free Agency is really really thin at RT. Do we reach for one in the draft? Convert another lineman over? What about Donald Thomas, can he stay healthy for more than one game/training camp? If so, an offensive line using Thomas at RG and Mewhort at RT "could" succeed.

To be honest, the Colts are eating a crap sandwich when it comes to the O-Line. We have two good offensive linemen and a handful of question marks.

I'm interested in how the Front Office tackles this and the continued need at D-Line and LB.

  6. I like Wisniewski at C too at this point I just have trouble trusting holmes even going back to college when is the last time he had a healthy year? add that to alleged lazy rehab. It's crazy we are still looking for a C

It shouldn't be so difficult to find a C. I would look at Newton at RT 27 yrs old should fit the criteria of average to above average and reasonable price

My opinion is we need significant upgrades on the DL and ILB to be the last team standing speed and some toughness I'm not one for big FA signings but I'd love to see Grigs bring in a splash player for the front 7 and hit D hard in the draft

If we could get Wiz at $6 mil a year and a tackle at $4-5 mil and lock them up for a few years, our O-Line would be (theoretically) set.

  7. It really depends. Truthfully (after looking at NFL.com's free agent by position list) there aren't many home-run tackles or guys that are obvious upgrades to Cherilus at RT that aren't on the wrong side of 30.

When you look at our offensive line, we have

    Castonzo- Solid player

Mewhort- Solid, but only a rookie

Holmes- tends to get bullied on the inside

Whoever at RG- tends to look like a revolving door

Cherilus - Average to slightly above average RT.

If I were to pick one position to fix, It would be getting a RG. I think free agency is deeper for guards.

However, if I may go on a tangent, I'd just sign Stefan Wisniewski at C and move Holmes to RG with Shipley as depth, but since that was not an option- I'll have to go with the RG first.

  8. It's a huge stretch to think that Grigson would decline to draft a receiver simply because of Duron Carter. Receiver looked like the deepest position on the team last year, and Grigson still drafted Moncrief. If Grigson has shown anything, it's that he will stick to his board rather than reaching for perceived need.

Well, hopefully he has NT, ILB and S on his board instead of "Perceiving them as needs".

  9. Unrestricted:

    Ahmad Bradshaw, RB

    Matt Hasselbeck, QB

    Reggie Wayne, WR

    Hakeem Nicks, WR

    Joe Reitz, OL

    Cory Redding, DL

    Fili Moala, DL

    Andy Studebaker, LB

    Darius Butler, CB

    Josh Gordy, CB

    Sergio Brown, S

    Mike Adams, S

    Colt Anderson, S

    Restricted:

    A.Q. Shipley, OL

    Jerrell Freeman, LB

    Delano Howell, S

    Matt Overton, LS

    http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/blogpost?blogname=indianapolis-colts&id=10086&src=desktop

Out of this list (besides a few that might retire) do you want the colts to sign back?

    UFA

Nicks- starting to develop rapport with Luck. A little continuity can't hurt with the receiver corps, especially with Wayne on the way out. Still, an upgrade over Avery and Heyward-Bey even if he's 3rd on the Depth Chart behind Moncrief and Hilton

Bradshaw- Fantastic player when healthy. Not an every-down back, but someone who is a playmaker

Butler- best nickel corner in football

Brown- Solid backup and fantastic ST player

Adams- He's a stopgap player, had a great year this year. Give him one more year to help solidify our secondary with the incoming youngsters

    RFA

Freeman- Nothing wrong with Freeman. He's an average ILB, besides, he's not over the hill and he knows the system. Capable of being a home-run hitter too.

Overton- Pro Bowl long snapper? Duh.

Shipley- Depth on the O-Line, and arguably one of the better centers we currently have on roster.

  10. It's 0.8 here in VA, but if you get pulled over for something like a taillight outage and they smell the alcohol or can tell you've been drinking, you're probably getting handcuffed just for safety reasons. Spend the night in the drunk tank until you sober up

Good god, 0.8? you would be dead!

    That's a 80% BAC!

  11. If he's not cut, it's because he appears to have handled it well.

He went before a judge.   I didn't look too closely, but it appears he's plead guilty and accepted his punishment.

He didn't resist arrest or tell the Police "you can't arrest me,  I play for the Colts!"

This may be what saves him.....

Grigson spoke highly of him earlier today....   I hope it works out that AJ can be salvaged....

    Copycat!

  12. I got Ricardo Matthews and Bryan Bulaga on my first try. Should I go after Ryan Matthews?

Well, I wasn't sure how to put in the contracts, because I thought if I selected a $21 Mil contract with 5 years, then that 21mil would be spread over five years.

    Nope.

I'm paying Rolando McClain 21mill a year for 5 years.

    Derp.

  13. Heh, 22 year old making a couple hundred thousand a year playing pro football, he's going to be stupid. Crap happens.

Remember, our punter got drunk and took a swim in the Broad Ripple Canal.

Jackson didn't hurt anyone, and he he will serve his time. So long as he doesn't do anything like this in the future, I don't have an issue with the Colts giving him a second chance. Now if he got violent and resisted arrest, yelling "you can't arrest me, I'm an Indianapolis Colt!" I'd be different.

  14. Indy's Wish List

    Rolando McClain

    Yeah, that's about it.

    Re-Sign

    Nicks

    Bradshaw (should be cheap)

    Sergio

    Butler

    Adams

We really need to build a D-Line, but I don't see free agency being that path to building a dominant front seven. McClain would be a great addition next to Freeman and give D'Qwell time off on passing downs.

We are going to have to invest at least a 2nd round draft pick into a NT. If Tevin Coleman falls to round 3 or 4, I would be all for drafting him, but our #1 pick should be a ball-hawk safety.

  15. So you are suggesting that the Pats did nothing to affect this equation? That BB is just a decoration on the sideline? That it's as simple as "if they had prepared, they'd have won"... Really?

    Again, WOW!

Not at all. Look back at the Patriots running game though- it wasn't exotic. It was just basic football. Most of Blount's runs came right up the middle.

All of the deception, all of the shenanigans and Belichek comes out with the newest type of offense. A run between the tackles.

That is humiliating. Especially when Blount and Jonas Gray are not superstar running backs. If Peterson, McCoy or Jamaal Charles ran for 160 and four Touchdowns, I'd chalk it up to them being some of the best runners in the NFL, and that's normal for them. But this is Blount and Gray, a guy who can't stick with the Bucs for being garbage and is a bad influence on the Steelers.

  16. That's the difference.....

You view it as the coaches were caught off guard.

I don't see it that way.    I think we knew what was coming and couldn't stop it anyway......

    Big difference....

Yeah, that may be. It's flat out irritating though, to hear all the talk by the players and the team and media all week, then to fall flat like that on Sunday. It's rough.

  17. THAT is the logical conclusion? That the coaches didn't know? That they didn't make effort to prepare?

    WOW!

Could it possibly simply be that the team isn't good enough yet? That despite every reasonable effort, they got outcoached by the best in history?

Nope, you are certainly right. The Colts coaching staff just blew off preparations. That seems to make much more sense.

You're right, they must have prepared. They stopped the Patriots from getting 200 yards and four rushing touchdowns again. They only gave up 160 to Blount and 3 rushing tds.

    PROGRESS!

  18. Denver did in the Super Bowl last year.    And that's on a much, much bigger stage.

We made to the AFC Championship in year 3 of a complete rebuild.    And the future seems bright....

I suspect you'll get over such a terrible hardship.....

Oh I understand that, and I couldn't be happier about the quick turnaround.

That being said, I knew what the Patriots were going to do yesterday. You knew, it seems that everyone save Manusky and Pagano knew what was going to happen with Blount.

What did we do to stop it? Absolutely nothing.

That's what got me riled up- the Coaching staff and the defense were completely unprepared for a ground assault for the third time in a row and the second time this season. You know the saying "Fool me once...." What happens on the third time?

  19. Sadly, I can count about 10 to 15 guys on the Colts Roster that are above average to elite and the rest is in the toilet.

    Offense

    Luck

    Hilton

    Moncrief

    Fleener

    Allen

    Castonzo

    Mewhort

Leaves us needing C Rg Rt Rb.

    Defense

    Davis

    Newsome

    Walden

    Jones

    Toler

    Leaves us needing about everything....

    Yikes
