    My two cents.

A trade up in round 1 to get a desired player will be too cost prohibitive to make.

A trade back is more likely.  I think at # 26, the Colts are in a spot where teams who want the 5th year option on player (QB in most cases) make a move to get back into the first round.  I could easily see them adding more picks this year and next.

Agree. I have a feeling the Colts will end up with 11 or 12 picks in this upcoming draft when all is said & done.

Always the super bowl. But that's not a realistic premise. Going all in and super agressive in Free Agency in no way guarantees anything. Nowhere close.

100% correct. If being aggressive in free agency every year guaranteed a Super Bowl, the Redskins would be a dynasty by now.

There's been some rumours that Russel Wilson's wife wants NY over Seattle and he may be traded there. If not, I can see Rosen with NYG or pats. Then maybe Brissett to Seahawks if they trade Wilson.

Not sure where you heard this (link?), but the meltdowns that would ensue amongst Seahawks fans if they were to trade Wilson make me want it to happen so badly.

Benjamin Allbright is way more reliable than "insiders" like Mike Silver and Jason La Canfora.

In terms of potential trade targets, I do not really have a clue. I find it difficult for Ballard and company to trade a draft pick, but maybe a late round/conditional.

FWIW, he "liked" several tweets in his replies that made mention of Trae Waynes

Okay, I tried to find the nicest thing a Packers fan said about him (because over 90% of them are saying he's terrible with bad tackling mechanics and abysmal coverage) and this is all I could find:

He has to be a special teams guy, I can't imagine that they're looking at him for any type of significant role in the defense.

In some ways, it worked for the Broncos a couple of years ago when they had Peyton. It took two years, but they got a ring after signing Ware, Talib, Ward and Sanders. In some ways, the Browns current haul is similar in turns of potential impact.

    Yeah... but now they suck.

"good as everyone thinks he is"...????

Interesting....    I wasn't aware that ANYONE HERE thinks Wilson is all that good.

I think he's mostly potential,  but he played dramatically better once Mike Mitchell took him under his wing and taught him how to be a pro.

People trash Wilson nonstop in here, & I just don't get it. Dude was like 20 when he got drafted, had a rocky first year, made a huge leap in his 2nd, & by all means should be set up for a breakout season in '19. But for whatever reason, the forum always seems to make sure that every draft class has a whipping boy, & once that's been decided, it doesn't change.

I like what Ballard is doing and it's smart.  But I don't think you can really credit Ballard with being a trend setter in this department.

The strategy is not really something new.

Also I really don't think it's a case of Ballard just waiting around so much as it's a case of Ballard just refusing to overpay and it ends up looking like he's waiting by default since the first few days are when all the really huge (overpay) deals are happening.

It sounds like Ballard was in negotiations with several big name players including Landon Collins.  It's just that the bidding just got too high and Ballard dropped out instead of overpaying.

Let all the other teams break the bank, then once the 2nd wave of FA starts, there are only a couple of teams to compete with, therefore the bidding is way less aggressive, but there really isn't much of a dropoff in the value of the player. It's similar to trading back to acquire 2nd round picks as opposed to trading up to gain a few spots in the 1st round.

And the 120 Mil is cash spending right?  Because I know our total cap spending right now is like 150 M.

That's where I get a little confused. Differentiating those 2 kind of throws me for a loop.

So we have to create about $130M in new spending?

I will note that with the FA's that the Colts have coming up for the next offseason, a good chunk of that will probably be spent in bringing those guys back.

    Essentially yes.

$250mil - $120mil = amount we need to spend next offseason to hit 89%.

The $120mil from this year could feasibly hit $140mil by the time we sign all of our draft picks, assuming we make a handful of moves in free agency.

I have never been a fan of Mack as the #1 back.   I have said multiple times that we could and should upgrade the position,    I posted in another thread that I did not think Ballard would upgrade the RB position because Mack did gain a lot of yards at the end of the season. BUt he missed games.  And someone responded that is why we need to upgrade.  Whoever you are you seem to be onto something.

    And I couldn't be happier.

Aside from goal line situations, signing Ajayi would not effect Marlon Mack's snap count in the slightest. He's clearly our RB1 despite the opposition of some in our fanbase.

Not sure why we need him.  Seems to be filling space just because.

If we weren't going to get Bell, I was fine with Mack, Wilkins, and Hines.

I don't get the infatuation with Le'Veon Bell. No good teams wanted him, that's why he's on the Jets. As far as Ajayi goes, Frank Reich coached him in Philly, & he was a big part of their SB run, so he knows exactly how to use him. What else do you need to know?

To get an accurate number one would have to subtract from the 250 mil the amount we are contracted to spend next year on players correct?

That $250mil figure includes roughly $120mil of this year's money, which will continue to increase through this current free agency period, signing draft picks, waiver wire pickups, UDFAs, etc. After all of that, the leftover total will be the number we have to spend in order to hit 89% & comply with the salary cap floor. In other words, we're basically already halfway there, with a lot more signings on the horizon.

If we take a WR with one of the first two or three picks, I'd absolutely put them in front of both Cain and Funchess. Not because I think Cain sucks, it's just going to be hard coming back from injury at the same time he is trying to build first year chemistry with Luck. Funchess on the other hand, got passed up last year by 200+ yards by a rookie (DJ Moore) from the draft who displaced him as WR1.

Cain I think will come on late in the season, and will be 100 next year. Funchess is a wildcard based on if we draft a WR early, Cain's progress, if Reich diverts targets from Ebron to Funchess, and a lot of other factors.

Considering how early on they went out & grabbed Funchess, I'd say Frank Reich has a very specific plan on how he wants to use him. They gave him a $10mil deal without hesitation on day 1 of the legal tampering period, so that's indicative that they like something specific about what he brings to the table, so I'm intrigued by that signing.

As for Deon Cain, I agree 100%. I feel like they're going to ease him into things very gradually, so I don't have any expectations for him early on.

I'd be lying to you if I said I knew the ins and outs of who's due what, or when...but I have to believe that there's more than enough cap space to keep anyone of relevance and still splurge a little? 250 mil goes a long way

Their current 3 year total is $401,069,662

Total needed to hit 89% over 4 years is $651,836,000

Amount they need to spend this & next offseason is $250,766,338

They average about $133mil spent each year, so if Funchess hits his incentives, that alone would put us a little over $133mil for the year.

we didn’t pay him top 20 money there’s no commitment en the grand scheme he’s a lottery ticket

For the folks that aren't digging the signing, & think that we overpaid, this should help.

They need to spend 250 million more!? Why are they not signing people?? Lol geeez

In my mind the real question is what's a better use for that money: giving bonuses to players on your roster that earned it, or spending a bunch of money in free agency just to hit some silly 89% cap floor by next offseason? I honestly don't know.
