  1. What exactly is the practice squad?

A group of players that can partake in training but cannot play in actual games?

Yup.  You'll see them on the sidelines during games (if you recognize them).  They'll be dressed in street clothes.   On the flipside of that, out of the 53 players on the active roster, only 46 are allowed to be active on gameday.

PS players are compensated every week they are on the Practice squad (min they can make is $6000 per week), and if another team wants to take one of our guys, they will be automatically signed to that team's active roster for at least 3 weeks.

  2. I am still trying to figure out what the deal is with everyone getting up in arms over who is on our practice squad.

    I'm wondering that myself.

The international player exemption is alive and kicking in this new CBA. The caveat is that the league has to give an individual club the right to carry one. According to a 49ers website, they were not granted the exemption, but Okoye went to IR anyway. If we get the exemption for Adongo, great. If not, that's fine too. I'm on board with taking an athletic freak of a 23 year old and stashing him on the PS. if he learns enough to contribute, that'd be awesome.

  3. If he gets suspended for the season, he has to enter the supplemental draft doesn't he?

Don't think so.  Dez Bryant was suspended his final season and he went to the regular draft.  The supplemental draft comes into play for players that are ruled ineligible after the deadline to apply for the draft.  If the NCAA comes back a month from now and suspends him for the season, he can just go ahead and apply for the regular draft when the time comes. If Manziel decides to stay in school (i know, he more than likely won't), and on May 1st 2014, the NCAA comes back and rules him academically ineligible for the 2014-2015 season (shoulda attended those online courses JFF!) Then with the regular draft already taken place, Manziel could apply for the supplemental.  Think Terrelle Pryor.

  4. I think Adongo goes to the PS just because if they were going to cut bait, they would have done it a couple days ago.

The question I have, is Adongo a citizen of the US, or is he an "international" player?  I only ask because there is an exemption in the eligibility requirements for the PS, that a team can add a 9th member if they are live outside the US and its territories.

    • (a) The League may elect in any League Year in accordance with this Article to establish Practice Squads not to exceed eight (8) players per Club. The League’s election in any one season shall not determine or affect its election in any subsequent season.
    • (b) The League may elect to allow some or all Clubs to add to their Practice Squads one additional player, who shall not count against the limit above, whose citizenship and principal place of residence are outside the United States and its Territories ("International Player").

So if he fit the requirement, he could make our PS, and not technically take up a spot.  Food for thought.

  5. I'm going to throw this out there, even at the risk of sounding stupid.

My theory is that Big Ben is going to the practice squad.  Now, I'm basing this on some web research (and the limited playing time), but from what I gather, he could still be eligible because even though he was drafted in 2011, he only played four games his first year before the first ACL tear/Trip to IR, and tore the second ACL in training camp of 2012.

Practice squad eligibility is defined as:

    • First and foremost, a player is not eligible for the practice squad if he has spent a season of being a free agent according to NFL rules.
    • If the player was on the active list for fewer than 9 games during their "only Accrued Season(s)", he maintains his eligibility for the practice squad

An "Accrued Season" is defined as:

    • In order to accrue a season, a player must be on (or should have been on) full pay status for six or more regular season games.
    • As with players earning Credited Seasons, a player can’t accrue seasons if he is on the Exempt Commissioner Permission List, the Reserve PUP List, a team’s practice squad, or the Injured Reserve List."

A shot in the dark, but hey, what the hell.  It makes sense to me at 1 in the morning.

  6. Normally I would....

But, I think i've been seeing it more and more the last few years....

And I don't know why this is?     I don't know if the ball is juiced, or what the deal is....   but I've noticed it several times in the last few years....

It's a mystery for me?!?    Go figure?

I believe they moved the line of the KO up a couple years ago, in order to cut down on returnable balls.  That worked only in theory because kickers just loft the ball, giving it more hang time, giving the coverage team (who is already closer) a wee bit more time to run down and stop the returner before the 20yd line.

IMO, I'd rather our guys just kick it out of the back of the endzone and not get to cute with it.
