  1. Link for everyone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-lHn93fNDk

He does look like a steal, but once again it's hard to tell with the low talent that he's playing against. Seems like a smart kid with the size and speed needed for the NFL. Ran a 4.4 at his pro-day and is 6'0, 220.

I was on Grigs a little bit for the draft(I'm still not really that excited bout our picks outside of a couple) but this UDFA haul looks to be one of the best in the league. It's good to know that the Colts are a place that these players want to play for as many of them picked us over other teams(I believe Zach Kerr turned down Broncos to come to Colts).

I hope a couple of them can make the team and maybe even contribute this year. Qua Cox, Dewey, Kerr have to be my 3 favorite so far though. Purifoy a close 4th. There's a good chance one of these CBs or Safeties gets a chance if they make the roster due to our injury prone Landry and Toler.

  2. Totally agree on the secondary.

Honestly I expected at least one of the 2nd or 3rd round picks to be spend on defense and that didn't happen.  And looking at it now post draft all I can say is that it's highly possible that we got WORSE on defense.

We let Bethea go, didn't make any effort to sign even an adequate starter at safety or CB, and completely ignored both in the draft.

And what is so frustrating on all of that is that we have plenty of cap space to sign a decent starter at safety.

I'm in the same boat. I couldn't believe we didn't draft one in the 2nd or 3rd round. I can't believe a lot of people are acting as if Howell is better than most of the safeties in this draft. To be honest, none of us know but competition would've been nice to have at the very least. Howell was serviceable last year and showed flashes with his aggressiveness and always being around the ball, but he did miss a bunch of open field tackles, something that is very important at the safety position. I'll give him a chance, I just wish we had a veteran behind him in case it doesn't go as planned.

With the cap space we had, it was shocking that we didn't go after a safety harder in FA. After that I figured we would for sure address the need in the draft, but that didn't happen either. Now a lot of people on these forums are acting as if all the UDFAs are going to work out and we will be fine, I tend to disagree with these ideas. There are reasons these guys weren't drafted, sometimes it's on the field issues, others it's off the field.

I'm personally worried about all the unknowns going into this next season. Khaled Holmes-Center, Donald Thomas-Guard, Toler-Cornerback, Howell-Safety, all of our RBs, even Reggie Wayne is unknown since he's coming off a major injury. I personally am least worried about Reggie though, because at the end of the day he will work harder than anyone else on our team and our WR corp seems pretty stacked compared to last years. There's a good chance 1 or 2 of these unknowns won't work out and it could be our downfall. My biggest worry has to be Toler though, the man couldn't stay on the field at all and we are overpaying him to sit on the bench. I thought he was going to be cut and replaced but Grigson must think he will have a turn-around year(I don't).

I'm shocked I'm one of the few that is worried about our secondary, do you guys not remember all the years of mediocre secondary play with Peyton and how when we finally had a good, healthy secondary, we won a Super Bowl?(Thank you Bob Sanders)

I don't get why people don't realize that the safety and CB class was bad, that's why so many of them fell as far as they did. There were 5 blue chip corners, and 4 blue chip Safety's, and they all went in the 1st.  If you want to be mad at Grigson for anything, now is an appropriate time to get re-upset at the Richardson and Hughes trade. If we would've had those picks, most people probably would've gotten what they wanted.

I disagree that the CB class was bad. I thought it was pretty good actually. Even some of the late CB picks look like good pick-ups(Pierre Desir off the top of my head). Qua Cox and Purifoy look like good UDFA pick-ups as well. Now the safeties, I'll agree with you, it wasn't very good. It makes me more upset that had we had our #1 pick, we could've gotten Jimmie Ward who I thought would fit in perfectly with us. But of course the 9ers drafted him and really don't need him with Bethea/Reid. The Montori Hughes trade was a joke last year as well, he hasn't shown us anything at all on the field to warrant trading up for.

  3. I think the back end of the D is now unquestionably the biggest hole on our roster but heading into the draft I think the biggest hole was  O Line it is masked because Luck takes a licking and keeps on ticking but we have to find a way to keep him clean and maybe open a hole or two,

He was sacked less last year but that was because he is a bad butt but he was one of the most hit QB's in the league. He ranked 4th I believe being hit 20.6% of his pass attempts. That has to stop. He is the thing that separates us from 90% of the league and makes us a Super Bowl contender we all know that.

I completely agree with this. I am not against the O-line pick. Luck deserves better than the worst O-line in the league, our O-line was atrocious the past 2 seasons. We are lucky(no pun intended) to have one of the best QBs in the league and that he is mobile. His movement in the pocket is insane.

I'm just hoping that Mewhort is worth the pick. He wasn't a reach, but there were better guards on the board at the time but I do like his versatility. Thornton wasn't very good last year(granted he was next to Satele so that doesn't help at all) and Holmes is completely an unknown. Also the run blocking hasn't done anything to help Trich. I just hope to see an average O-line after all these high draft picks(2, 3, 4) on them. Just because we draft a lot of O-line doesn't mean it's improving.

The reason I complain about the secondary is because it's being overlooked. Every year the Colts have injuries in their secondary and then have a back-up QB come to town and throw for 300+ yards on us. We need depth there, especially with Landry/Toler who have maybe played 1 full season in their careers. The Seahawks defense looks completely better because of their dominant secondary(specifically their shut-down corner and their safeties(both Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor)), I would like for once to have dominate secondary play in Indianapolis. We have our corner, I was fully expecting us to get that safety in this draft.

I know, I know people, Grigson "didn't like any of the safeties left on board" but we cannot just think we can plug in Howell and Toler and be fine. There is a Bethea-sized hole at safety and Toler will get hurt in the first game. That secondary looks ok on paper right now, but one injury and we have Josh Gordy or Sergio Brown as our starting CB/S respectively. That scares me. If an injury occurs, we will have one of the worst secondaries in the league, nothing Vontae Davis can do about the #2 corner and the safeties behind him. I'm amazed that we didn't draft either a CB or a S in the late rounds, I have a hard time believing we couldn't just get Ulrick in UDFA and drafted Ballantine or Bailey. Qua Cox looks like a great pick-up though at CB. Man I wish we went harder after TJ Ward or Jarius Byrd.

  4. The one thing that baffles me is that we're totally fine with Landry (overrated/overcompensated) and Howell (unknown/injury prone) being the starters, and a couple special teamers only as their backups. I'm glad that we didn't reach for somebody in an early round, but with the serious lack of known talent at the position, I just can't fathom drafting Ulrick John in the seventh when we could have taken Dion Bailey.

.....and before anyone says it, I know.....'In Grigson I trust', 'I'll take the opinion of people that do this for a living over yours', 'How many Executive of the Year awards have you won', 'Dear God', 'Insert cliche here'.

I'm the same as you and I've been hearing it from many fans on this forum the past 2 days. I can't believe we didn't at least take one secondary player in the draft. It's as if Grigson really believes that we won't have a single injury in that secondary next year. We have an injury-prone duo of safeties and a CB that is never on the field. This will be the downfall of the team this year. We completely ignored the biggest hole on our roster but don't listen to me, I'm just a fan in his computer chair that doesn't know anything about football.

The fact that people were asking for Bethea to be released and now are defending Howell are irrational. I know Bethea was older, but he's more proven than Howell. Maybe Howell will come out next year and make us forget about Bethea, but the utter lack of addressing needs is killing me.

I surely hope Grigs hit on some of these UDFA CB/S's. Qua cox certainly looks like he has a shot to make the team.

  5. How has our secondary been ignored? We have the same exact cornerback group as last year, except a healthy Toler, and everyone in the Colts organization knew Delano Howell would be the starting safety, but for some reason people on this board struggle to see that, and I can't wait to see him prove all of you wrong. The only problem is safety depth, and how us not in Grigson's opinion, reaching for safety depth, makes this an awful draft.

We lost Bethea, which is a pretty big part of the secondary if you ask me. Sure he wasn't him old self but he was still an iron man. Never got hurt, man was a beast but I was one that advocated getting rid of him due to him being older and slowed down. Toler...healthy? He's still recovering from his injury and you'd be kidding yourself if you bet against him being injured at some point this year. Landry, well I can only hope he learns to tackle and stays healthy the entire year. I liked the signing when we got him, time for him to show he was worth the money. I just know our secondary is always plagued by injuries(as well as most of the team) so I would like better depth behind the ones that are starting(Davis/Toler/Butler).

I hope you are right about Howell. He gets his chance to start the year, I hope he takes full advantage of it. He has some big shoes to fill in Bethea's spot but Grigs and Co feel confident about him.

However, let me say I've been impressed by the UDFA signings. Qua Cox looks like a steal, Jerrell Freeman certainly seemed happy about it.

  6. I'm not sure exactly what tape you're watching, but from what I've seen and read, he seems to have pretty reliable hands. He was plucking the ball well in much of the film I've seen. The biggest areas he needs polishing, however, are route running and really learning to go up and fight for the ball in traffic. While he only recorded 1 drop last year, there were a few more 50/50 balls you would like to see him come away with. All in all, we got a phenomenal receiver who possesses the most absurd combination of size and speed in the draft. Let him learn to run routes from reggie, how to use his hands effectively off the line and in traffic from Nicks, and how to take a top off the D from T.Y. I'm very excited about his potential. We should let him come in and show flashes like GB did with Randal Cobb, and then next year he should feel comfortable enough to assume a larger role.

Sweet, glad I'm the only one seeing this then. I see a ton of potential just looks like he lets the ball hit his chest before grabbing it.1 drop last year? That's impressive but yeah he doesn't seem to use his size as much as he should. I'm sure Reggie will teach him the ins and outs.

  7. No one wants that either....but some of the most nauseating moments from the Manning era that I can remember were having to watch a chronically pathetic, dead fish-stinking level of run-blocking....the result of an almost flippant approach given to the OG position. Trench weaknesses played a very, very large part in playoff losses.

I totally get that we have some bolstering of the CB/S positions to do, but if Grigson attempts to patch those areas with Draft Day "reaches" as he sees it....what have we really gained?

Let these draft and UDFA prospects play and show us what they got....it's entirely possible Grigson has netted us 3-4 solid starters, regardless of what that joker Kiper says.

It's definitely possible we found a few starters, just I don't see them starting this year. I really feel we are only a couple spots from a true SB contender, just think 2 of those spots are in our secondary. Trench weakness was TERRIBLE for peyton, just awful. I hope we can get a run game started for Luck, last year was even rough to watch after the 9ers game. Come on Trich...be worth that 1st pick.

  8. No one is going to argue that Luck isn't the biggest reason we're doing so well. Also, no one would argue that we need a good safety, and maybe another good CB.

What none of us can say is if the Colts had the safeties or CBs on the board highly rated. We have our opinions but we don't have their insight, right or wrong. We can back over the last five drafts and find a lot of highly rated players who, haven't worked out and vice versa.

So when people write as if they know more than our scouts and GM (not saying you in particular), you can understand how some of us can respond with some sarcasm, right?

I understand most people won't just have a basic conversation just due to the stupidity of some people. I was just making a case and I probably shouldn't of typed the part of almost being done with Grigson, I'm just frustrated at some of the picks is all.

The value just doesn't look good(on paper). Who knows? Mewhort may have been the next OL on everyones board when he took him. It actually sounds like the Seahawks may have wanted Mewhort since they took an OL right after us and Pete Carroll said something about missing on their guy and grabbing the next OL on board. I will wait and see how the draft class looks post-season but right now I'm not very impressed due to some major holes not being filled.

However I am not a GM nor even a scout in the NFL, so in no way am I saying that I know more than our draft staff does. I just don't want this regime to miss opportunities like we did with Peyton.

  9. I think us that use the emoticons are just trying to let you down easy without coming right out and voicing their displeasure with your comments. I think pretty much of all the comment back to you were self explanatory. This team is not going to fall apart from losing one player with the exception of Luck.

That secondary certainly could fall apart. In today's league Safeties and corners are VERY important. Look at the seahawks, they completely dominated the best offense of NFL history with a couple all-pros in that secondary. Having a player like Earl Thomas to make up for any mistakes by the players in front of him can be the difference of a touchdown and only a first down.

Case and Point: Look at the Colts defense with and without Bob Sanders. He was a difference maker for that defense and I strongly believe he's one of the primary reasons we won a SB. Our defense was completely different when he was not healthy.

Tell me what you think rather than just saying "yes" or "no" with a stupid animated smiley. This is a message board anyways, I like to hear other's opinions at the very least. Maybe someone can change my mindset on this lack of addressing secondary but I have a hard time believing I'm the only one worried about it.

Yes and still went back to back 11-5 seasons with a playoff win in just the 2nd year of a rebuild. I guess we could all find fault if we look hard enough.

Yeah but Grigson sucks 2   10-5 seasons  in a row the shame of it all ..

I think you both are giving Grigs a bit too much credit. Andrew Luck is the biggest reason of all that we have that record over the past 2 seasons. Without him, I would bet we would be around .500, probably even worst. Just think about how many game winning drives and 4th quarter comebacks the kid has had to pull for us to be able to win some of those games. I just hope we build a team around Luck that we never did with Peyton.

  10. *Points to UDFA Thread*

I think the secondary was very much addressed

And before you say "Their undrafted, they won't make an impact"

Please take 10mins to think of every undrafted player that's now doing something in the NFL

I'll take look at it. I did like the Qua Cox pick-up, kid looks like a baller. I don't believe that UDFA's never work out, but it's just more difficult. I probably am just a bit frustrated since we didn't take anyone that I thought would've been a target that dropped to us. I'm not the GM nor do I think I'd be a better one. I just see another year with another crappy secondary and that's the last thing I want. Man I'm glad we signed Vontae at least.

  11. Clearly you don't understand how the draft works.  Grigson and Pagano didn't think there was a safety available that was better than anyone already on the roster.  Simply drafting a player because he plays a position of need doesn't make it a good pick.

    :scorebad:

We make a move to get a safety or even a corner this offseason, it could change my view. But I just see another year with a crappy secondary getting burned by Alex Smith in the playoffs with lousy receivers. Toler or Landry will get hurt again and then look...who's behind them? Absolutely nobody.

And you people using Emoticons could at least explain why you disagree with me rather than just posting those. I didn't say I was lobbying for a new GM...yet. Just saying the past 2 drafts have been very unimpressive(this one prematurely on paper).

Yes! Let's lobby for a new GM!

After all, even with losing four or five starters on offense, we could only win one playoff game. Horrible depth.

I'm talking about Depth in our secondary. There is 0 depth. One injury and we have one of the worst secondaries in the league.

    We don't need a WR?

You think Reggie is gonna play forever?

Or let me guess. You're one of those guys who had already projected Rogers as the next Rice, and Whalen as the next Welker...

Personally I do like Da'rick Rogers but Whalen...not so much. I just see that secondary...and boy is it ugly. Moncrief pick is probably my favorite pick from draft because the value in the 3rd was amazing(I do like the Andrew Jackson/Newsome picks too though), hard to pass up. But I am very shocked we didn't make a move for at least one secondary player with the injury-prone guys we have, in either FA or draft.

I'm personally just having nightmares of that secondary, it looks like the biggest weakness on our team. Colts have always had a mediocre secondary at best, I'd like this to change for at least a little bit in the pass-driven league. Maybe I am overreacting to it, it's possible but I'm a secondary type of guy and I'm surprised that we act as if Bethea can just easily be replaced by Howell and that we will never have an injury. I'm just predicting another year of any QB throwing for 300+ yards against us. Watching Keenum, Alex Smith, Clemons, and Carson Palmer tear up this secondary last year was just pitiful.

  12. I really want to try to trade with the 49ers for one of their safeties. Ward or Reid would be fine, I can't believe they took a safety at #1 after signing Bethea to the contract that they did. Ugh I wanted Ward...

We could also trade for a CB but I doubt it will happen since our coaching staff obviously thinks Toler will turn it around(I don't think so).

  13. The people that "love" this draft must have rose-colored glasses on. Now I will hold off a year or 2 before "grading it" but don't expect good grades from analysts this week.

I personally think we had one of the worst drafts this year. I was in shock of the picks that we made, except for Moncrief. But we don't even need a WR, like at all. We do however need CB/S (depth at least). I'm scared of our secondary, they have been ignored all offseason(except for re-signing Vontae) and it's going to come back to bite us.

I'm about ready for a new GM or at least new draft scouts because these guys have been TERRIBLE in early rounds the past 2 years. Late round picks are fine with me this year, look like they have great potential but really think drafting a CB or a safety could've made this draft look a lot better. We are not the 49ers, we can't just draft BPA everytime without addressing some key needs on this football team.

  14. I agree with about drafting for the future, I do not like drafting them high when we have positions that need better players.

This, this and this. I have no problem with drafting for the future but when there are big holes that need to be filled, I don't want our GM to just blatantly ignore it.

So we don't pick up a safety or #2 corner in FA so we think we must be targetting them in draft. But nope, we go draft a ton of future players that will be depth for the time being. If Landry or Toler gets hurt again...man that secondary will be one of the worst in the league. I would bet that we were the only team in the NFL draft to not take a single secondary player. There was so much talent in this draft at CB/S and we never addressed it.

But of course the Grigson fanboys will say "He just didn't like any of the ones available". Well if all he was considering was Jimmie Ward, PRyor, and Ha-ha, he's out of his mind because we weren't going to get one w/o the first round pick that he wasted as well.

I usually defend Grigson but these past 2 drafts have made me very weary of his and our scouting team's ability. To just ignore the holes on our roster is ignorant.

  15. The picks aren't necessarily "horrible" but they surely don't fill the needs that this team had going into the draft. I think Grigson and Co need to learn that reaching is still bad, but you need to at least draft a secondary guy when yours looks as bad as ours does. I understand drafting BPA, but you should really only do that once the major holes are filled, which on this team they are not. I usually defend Grigson and his decisions, but these past 2 drafts have just been terrible(this latest one on paper, the latter on the field). Grigson has failed to find a starting caliber player(yes I know Thornton played, but it wasn't pretty) in the past 2 seasons. He states that he doesn't want to start a rookie O-line but then he drafts 4 of them over the past 2 drafts(3 in the top 3 rounds).

Mewhort-Will be a back-up or MAYBE a right guard but this is a depth pick.

Moncrief-Look I love the guy and his potential but I just don't see room for him to get a chance till 2 years down the road when Reggie's contract wears out.

I'm just going to touch on these 2 picks because it's easier than just going through and saying which secondary were available when we drafted. We should've at least gotten Nix or another player at our 2nd round pick. Mewhort would've stayed around till the 3rd and we could've grabbed a true talent in either CB, S, or DT, all positions of need on our roster. Grigson tends to overvalue the guys on our board and drafts them early, removing the chance to grab a real stud that has dropped into our laps. I surely hope these OL from the past 2 drafts excel, because if not these past 2 drafts have been downright awful.

Moncrief, Andrew Jackson, and John Newsome are my favorite picks from this draft, but not one of them will start for this football team. For a team that still has many holes to fill, we need to find immediate starters, not just developmental talent every year. If this draft class doesn't turn out for Grigson, I want Irsay to do some considerable re-evaluating of the GM(and maybe the head coach). We have had a putrid defense which is what Chuck is all about but we have yet to draft any defensive player that makes an impact. I sure hope we nailed our moves in FA because this draft just doesn't excite me and I still have nightmares of Alex Smith throwing for 400+ yards against us in the playoffs.

  16. This is the first time I've questioned Grigson. This draft just doesn't make sense.. I'm seriously worried about our secondary.

This. That secondary is our weak spot. I can't believe we didn't address either CB or S. Sure Howell was serviceable last year but he still needs competition at the very least. He's not proven so don't draft as if he is. Then our CB position, ugh...if Toler gets hurt again, it will be ugly. We better go hard after some of the safeties/corners that aren't getting drafted.

  17. I shutter at the thought of our secondary next year. We blatantly ignored it and it will come back to bite us. I know people will argue that Toler could have a healthy year or that Howell will step in perfectly next to Landry but if we have a single injury in the secondary it will be a nightmare. Even if there isn't an injury, we didn't improve it. We should've just paid for Byrd or Ward in FA because I have a bad feeling we will be regretting it in the fall.

  18. Really think we should of addressed either CB or Safety with one of the picks yesterday but how can I complain with Moncrief in the 3rd? It's a steal just not one we need NOW, but for the future.

I fear the day that Toler goes down with injury again and we have no one in that #2 spot. I can foresee a trade up into the 4th for a CB/S. I wouldn't mind Brock Vereen or Dion Bailey.
