  1. Is there any logical reason that the Pats, widely regarded as the best team in the AFC if not the NFL, can show up in East Rutherford and actually be TRAILING the Jets 17-13 with I believe only 5 minutes to go, but then a team like the Colts, widely believed to be a team with no defense and no O-Line can go in there and just thrash them?

I know in the end a win is a win, but you gotta figure that the Pats were trying to score as much as they could the first 3 quarters and were just actually getting stopped.

Why such a dramatic difference from one week to the next?

I think he means on the third and 9 play where he got decked but still got it off to Moncrief in the first quarter. I believe that was the only drive the Colts punted on when Luck was in.

    The TD pass a beaut.

You are correct on both counts.  I apologize that my original post was not more clear.  The TD pass was magnificient.  I was indeed talking about the one where he was about to get clocked by 2 Jets and threw it all the way across the field:

There were 3 minutes to go in the first quarter and we were "only" up by 14 at the time - if that ball was even a half a second later than it was it's going back the other way and now it's 14-7, changing the whole tone of the game.  The risk does not outweigh the reward.  MAYBE if it's further down the field and there are people who can make a tackle if he does pick it you throw that, or MAYBE if it's not so close to the sideline giving Moncrief a little more space to make the catch you throw it, but the way Andrew made that play, it's either a catch or a pick 6 for the other team.

I'm not trying to be a negative Nancy I'm just saying that if there *is* a hole in Luck's game it's his decision making, pressing too much, trying too hard to make plays that just aren't there.  That was clearly a ball he should have thrown away - 7 times out of 10 that's a pick 6 IMHO.

Having said that, there's no other QB in the NFL I'd rather have on the Colts.  Love Luck.

Sooner or later some of you will get to the point where you understand this team belongs in the ring with just about any team.  We might be missing some parts here or there, but when these boys put their minds to something and they are serious they can put up numbers. There's enough here with sound game plans and great execution on both sides of the football to make some noise.   If we maintain some of what we saw last night effort, execution and game plan wise we'll make some noise I promise.  Don't let these "Poor Colts" fans on here fool you about what's possible.

I agree with you, and the time is now.  It's time for the Colts to PROVE it.  If they lose to Houston all of their potential means nothing.  If they lose to both Minnesota and Oakland all of their potential means nothing.  If they lose to Jacksonville, even if they enter that week 9-6, their potential means nothing.

The question is irrelevant.  If the Colts can't beat Houston and Jacksonville with the playoffs on the line do you WANT them in the playoffs to get humiliated by whatever #5 seed comes to our house?  And if they can't take at least one off of Minnesota or Oakland, same question - what confidence are you possibly going to have against any playoff-calibre team that comes to the house?

I will feel good about the colts' first-round chances if they beat Hou, Jax and Minn and they're at least competitive against Oakland.  If they somehow lose to Minnesota and then miraculously rebound to beat Oakland in Oakland, then as long as they take care of business against Jacksonville I'll feel good about their first-round chances.

  5. FWIW there's a good chance the Colts squeak into the playoffs without winning out.  I think that if they beat Houston, Jacksonville and Minnesota that will be enough to get in at 9-7.  If they're at least competitive against Oakland in Oakland I'll feel good they can beat KC or Denver (or whatever unexpected team gets the #5 seed) at home.  If they beat Oakland in Oakland that's a sign they can beat any AFC team except possibly New England.

If they don't beat Houston, Jacksonville or Minnesota and still somehow squeak in I'll be expecting a first-round exit.  Or if they win those three but get blown out by Oakland I won't feel good.

  6. Because when it all comes down to it that's what these message boards are for, right? :).

Let's say, just for the sake of discussion, that after week 17, the following have all happened:

    1. The Colts have squeaked into the playoffs

    2. The OL of Costanzo/Reitz/Kelly/Good/Haeg started each of the last 5 games

    3. Hilton, Davis, Robinson, Geathers, Mathis and Ridgeway are all 100% healthy

    4. No more than 1 other key injury to anyone other than Luck

Let's say you're (in the order of opponent likelihood) either the Chiefs, Broncos, Raiders, Dolphins or whatever miracle team other than those that makes the playoffs as a WC and you're coming to Indianapolis for your wild card playoff game (my money's on the Chiefs - let's face it, we're going to be the #4 seed, Oakland is probably going to win the AFC West and KC is going to have a better record than any other WC team).

How confident do you feel, seriously?

The 2014 Colts were a team that could beat any team in the league except the Patriots.

The 2016 Raiders, so far, look like a team that can beat any team in the league except the Patriots.  I will be very very happy if they prove me wrong.  I will be equally happy if we beat them this year.

That begs another question - if the team McKenzie built can't even beat a talent-starved team like the 2016 Colts would you really rather have McKenzie/DelRio than Grigson/Pags?

  8. So the steelers were without Heyward, DeAngelo Williams and their #2, #3 and #4 receivers - anyone else?  Any Steelers have to leave the game due to injury?

The Colts were without Langford, Luck, Geathers, and then Kelly, Davis, Mathis and Hilton got hurt during the course of the game.  Anyone else?

So full health vs. full health who wins?

  9. " Patrick Robinson and Darius Butler are going to have to play the games of their lives to give the offense a chance to outscore them. " <===those 2 guys, along with Rashad Melvin, did play very very well yesterday!

I had us beating KC but losing to GB, so now we're right back on track.  Nice to see them going into the bye week with a spring in their step.  Needless to say Tennessee is a must-win on the 20th.  Would love to see an upset on the 24th.

  10. With all the talk about how bad our coaching staff supposedly is, is Jacksonville's even worse?

Look at their roster - other than Luck and Davis is there ONE SINGLE OTHER POSITION where the Colt player is quantifiably better than the Jaguar player?

Jacksonville has losses this year to Tennessee, San Diego and Baltimore. They did play GB tough in the season opener as well as getting thumped by Oakland.  Their only wins are 1-6 Chicago and US.

Even if you downgrade Luck to Bortles and Davis to whoever their #1CB is, don't you think this coaching staff would be at LEAST 5-2 by now if not 6-1 with that roster?

Am I overrating their talent?  Hurns, Robinson, Thomas, Jackson, Puslousny or whoever you spell his name, Akamura, Blackmon, Ivory, Marcedes Lewis, Denard Robinson, Yeldon - I don't know how good the players on their O-Line are I admit, and I don't know how to quantify whether or not their d-line is quantifiably better than ours, but it sure seems like they've got TONS more talent on their roster that their coaches are just wasting.

  11. Remember in elementary school when they'd make you write book reports?  The teacher told us we could take ANY book off the shelf and write a report about it, so I took a book called Super Bowl Highlights which was the store of the first 15 Super Bowls.  What almost every team had in common was that they were horrible until they started getting the right players and coaches and they got better and better until they won it all - it was the story of the Cowboys, the Steelers, and even teams like the Rams and Eagles that got to the Super Bowl but couldn't win it.

That year just happened to be the year the Colts went 0-7-1.  I started following with them because I wanted to watch them gradually go from worst to champions, and it just stuck.  It took 24 years but they finally did win a Super Bowl!

I to this day get asked if I'm a Broncos fan because Manning left.  My allegiance is to the SHOE!

  12. I know I'm not completely unbiased but I think I'd take the Colts and the points in this one.  Without Jamaal Charles, Alex Smith is not going to be able to lead KC to enough points in Indy's house to outscore Luck and Hilton.

This is a bigtime "who wants it more" game, and I think both teams desperately want it, and I think Luck over Smith plus the game being in Indy is going to swing it.

  13. IMHO KC is a must-win if for no other reason than to show that we can compete with playoff-calibre teams.  KC made the playoffs last year and, with their big win over the Raiders, are showing they're a CLEAR favorite to be the WC out of the AFC West again this year.

If KC blows us out, we TRULY might as well just tank the rest of the season because even by some miracle we win the AFC South we'll just lose our first playoff game.

  14. Grunch

I think you're being just a BIT too optomistic.

Add a passrusher, get key players healthy and improve the consistency of the running game just a bit and the 2016 Colts can beat any 2016 AFC team other than Pittsburgh, Denver or New England 9 times out of 10.  Denver 7 times out of 10, Pitt or NE no more than 2 or 3 times out of 10 tops.

To beat 2016 Pittsburgh 9 times out of 10 we need a better #2 corner than Robinson, TWO passrushers and a SIGNIFICANTLY more consistent running game to keep Big Ben, Bell and Brown on the sideline as much as possible.

To beat 2016 New England 9 times out of 10 we need all of that PLUS someone who can at least PRETEND to cover Gronk, AND we need better coaching - that's the problem with NE, the hoodie just always seems to outcoach Mr. Grit.

  15. Here are the reasons we can beat every team that remains on our schedule:

KC:  KC barely beat San Diego, couldn't beat Houston and got blown out by Pittsburgh.  So far they sound like US!  Give them credit for a big win over a good Oakland team though.  But come on, Alex Smith vs. Andrew Luck?  I HAVE to consider the Colts the favorites in this one.

GB:  Going to be tough to beat this team without a passrush.  Patrick Robinson and Darius Butler are going to have to play the games of their lives to give the offense a chance to outscore them.  The O-line did a good enough job against Houston's passrush to make me think they'll block Peppers and Matthews just well enough for Luck to find the open receiver.  GB will be favored but the Colts COULD win by simply outscoring them.

Titans:  If we can beat them in Nashville we can beat them in Indianapolis.

Steelers:  The game is in Indy.  That helps.  It will help if we're playing Landry Jones instead of Big Ben.  But you have to consider the Steelers the favorites here.  This is the toughest one for me to be positive about, Pittsburgh is just a matchup nightmare for us.

    Jets:  Come on.

Texans:  Had them beat in their house sans the meltdown.  They're coming here now.

Vikings:  Any given day.  They were playing great but then lost to an Eagles team that couldn't beat the Lions or Redskins.  Get their defense blocked and outscore them.  I'm not afraid of Bradford and McKinnon.  This one to me is 50/50. Bad matchup for the Vikings.

Raiders:  Don't know what to think about this one, they've got a good team that's just not playing up to its potential every week.  They did beat Jacksonville pretty badly which we failed to do.  I'm going to call this one 50/50 because if the Colts show up to play and the Raiders don't the Raiders are in trouble.  I also expect the Colts to be a better team than they are now by this point in the year.

Jags: They will be facing a different Colts team the last week.  I like the Colts at home in this one.

I have us beating KC, Tenn, Hou, NYJ and the Jags for sure.  I have us winning either Oak or Minn but not both.  I can't see us beating GB or Pitt but hope I'm wrong.  I can't imagine 9-7 not winning this division.

I'm not on the "we're not winning the super bowl so let's just tank the season" bandwagon at all.  If we get the #4 seed, our first-round opponent will be either KC, Oakland or Buffalo.  I like the Colts at home against ANY of those teams.  Unfortunately it's basically a done deal that NE will be #1 so we'll have to go there in the divisional round, but I'll take the chance to pull off the upset over tucking my tail between my legs and running away every time I have the choice.

I will believe in my team until they're mathematically eliminated!!!

  16. Luck is #5 in the NFL in passing yards, #7 in passing TDs.  He's on pace for a season where he'll throw 29 TDs against 11 INTs and 4586 yards.

Hilton is #6 in the NFL in receiving yards, #5 in catches, and in a 24-way tie for 10th in TDs with 3.  He's on pace for 101 catches for 1482 yards and 8TDs.

    So there is that.
