  1. 1.  The Jaguars with a competent coach.  That team is LOADED with talent - it's preposterous that they win so few games.  We struggle enough against them as it is, I don't want to see them with a coach who knows how to put the players in a position to win.

    2.  The Titans with a top-notch, game-breaking WR.  They've got plenty of talent on defense, running game and OL, and a pretty darned good TE.  I'm proud that we beat them twice, but I don't want to see what would happen if they added a T. Y. Hilton or a Mike Evans.

    3.  The Texans with a competent QB.  I think every team in the league - Patriots included - would just mail it in if the Texans got a hold of even a Kirk Cousins or an Eli Manning much less a Phillip Rivers or a Ben Roethlesberger.

Are you still "ticked" the colts lost and drafted Luck?

I know why you're asking that question and you're not going to get the answer you're looking for.

The only Colts losses that come to mind that I'm still ticked about are:

    1. The 2005 Pittsburgh playoff loss.  I truly may never get over that one.

    2. The 2009 Super Bowl.  Even without Freeney we were the better team that day.

    3. The 2007 San Diego playoff loss.  Letting Billy Volek march down the field on our top-5-ranked defense was an embarrassment.

    4. The playoff game where we let Mark Sanchez drive down for a game-winning field goal that one-and-doned us out.

I don't want to think too hard and come up with more, because I'm in emotional pain right now thinking about those four.

Your point obviously is if I'm glad we got to draft Luck.  Of course - I'm not stupid.  But you don't tank games to get a better draft pick.  Are the 1998 Arizona Cardinals ticked that they won their last game and didn't get to draft Ryan Leaf?  Is any 2004 team ticked that they won too many games to get to draft Alex Smith?  Jamarcus Russell?  Robert Gallery?  Andre Wadsworth?  Chris Claiborne?  Peter Warrick?  COUNTLESS others that were "guaranteed" superstars that were total NFL washouts?

I could list everybody who won one game too many to get a superstar - Jacksonville picked #5 and missed out on Ezekiel Elliott - are they ticked they dropped a 50-burger on us?  Are the 2014 Steelers ticked that they won so many games they missed out on drafting Beckham or Aaron Donald?

Ii think you get my point.

Who on this board supported this notion about the Colts winning in week 17 during the 2011 season?

This is actually an EXCELLENT question.  I wanted them to win and I was ticked when they couldn't pull it out in the end.  I knew that winning that game might cost us getting Luck but I knew that a) For every Peyton Manning there's an Alex Smith and b) A QB doesn't have to go #1 overall to get you to a super bowl.

The playoff years can easily be attributed in part, to the sorry teams in the AFC South.

I don't know why I keep trying to change people's minds, but this is a very very very sore spot for me.

The 2012 Colts beat 12-4 Houston, 11-5 Green Bay and 10-6 Minnesota,

The 2013 Colts beat 3 of the 4 championship game participants and also beat 11-5 Kansas City TWICE - one of the two wins a 23-7 domination on the road.

The 2014 Colts did, admittedly, have a soft schedule, but they did beat 10-5-1 Cincinnati TWICE, 10-6 Baltimore and 9-7 Houston twice.  And before you call Houston crappy they did beat Baltimore on the road in a game that basically knocked them out of AFC North crown contention.  And look at Pittsburgh's schedule that year - theirs was MUCH worse than ours.

It is true that the 2015 Colts only had one quality win (Denver) and that 4 of the other 7 wins were against a terrible AFC South.

The 2016 Colts STRUGGLED within their division - they got swept by Houston and beat by Jacksonville, but then swept a Tennessee team that went on to beat Green Bay, Kansas City and Denver.

But you want to go on towing the preposterous line that the media burned into your head that the Colts only win because of the AFC South, go right ahead - I should know to just give up and let people be ignorant but on this one topic I just can't.

  5. I don't understand the Gruden love.  He did a good job with a talent-loaded Raiders team, but then the year he left Bill Callahan, a HORRIBLE head coach, took his team to the Super Bowl (something Gruden could not accomplish with them).

True, Gruden took Dungy's team to a Super Bowl win his first year, but then IN THE NEXT 6 YEARS WON A TOTAL OF A WHOPPING 0 PLAYOFF GAMES.  As a matter of fact they only won 45 REGULAR SEASON games in 6 years!  Pagano already has 48 in only 5 years!

Pagano and Grigson have only gone TWO years without a playoff win and everyone is calling for their heads.

If the COLTS had crappy QBs for 6 years, Gruden was their coach and went 6 years without a playoff win would you be wanting Irsay to retain him?  NO WAY.

Why is a guy who went 6 years without a playoff win even in the conversation?

  6. I'm not 100% positive about this, so feel free to check my math:

    1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
    2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
    3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
    4. Strength of victory.
    5. Strength of schedule.
    6. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
    7. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
    8. Best net points in conference games.
    9. Best net points in all games.
    10. Best net touchdowns in all games.
    11. Coin toss.

    1. Not applicable.

    2. Both teams would be 6-6 in the conference.

    3. Miami lost to tennessee, beat pittsburgh, SD and the Jets, so they're 3-1 against common opponents while we're 4-1.  So it might stop there.  But let's say, just for the sake of argument, that they only count Tennessee once for us.

    4. Strength of victory:  Miami didn't beat anybody good.  We had 2 victories over a Tennessee team that might end up with 10 wins, beat Oakland would be huge, we beat Green Bay, Minnesota.  So even if we DON'T win on common opponents we dwarf them here.

Note that this is why we need both Baltimore and Denver to go 8-8.  Baltimore has a better conference record than us and Denver beat us head to head.

(I believe the Colts lose a wild card tiebreaker with Miami (9-5) ..and by the time the Colts kickoff .Miami might have beaten Buffalo to go to 10-5 anyway.

FYI if Miami, Baltimore, Houston and Denver all lose out the wild card is ours.

If Miami, Baltimore and Denver loses out, Houston loses to Cinci and beats Tennessee, the wild card is ours because Houston wins the division.

That's it though - one Miami, Baltimore or Denver win and we don't get the wildcard.

If Tennessee beats Jacksonville *or* Houston beats Cincy we *cannot* win the division.

So there's actually only one permutation by which the Colts are out before kickoff and that's if both Tennessee *and* Miami both win.

  8. The Titans aren't going to lose a coachless, reeling Jacksonville team though.  If the Titans win that game we lose the division no matter who wins between Titans and Texans week 17.  For all practical purposes the division is off the table.  The wild card is basically off the table too, but the division title is already on the floor whereas a wild card is still on its way to the floor.

I don't care. I'll take what I get. Teams didnt mind beating us when we have a bunch of injured players

Understood, but at this point in the season I don't want to hear excuses and yeah, buts.  Bring 'em on.  Give us a chance to show we play with heart and play every game like we want to win.

While I agree with your overall premise how can you say the NFC south is just as bad as the AFC South???

Atlanta for years has been a good team.  Yes they were in a slump (because of the Julio Jones deal) but always competitive.  Carolina for the past 3 years have been a legit contender for Super Bowl (see last year) and Tampa Bay has been trending upwards (and not just on paper like the Jags) for about 4 years now.  In what way is their division anywhere close to being like ours?  Their weakest team (Tampa) could come into our division and make a realistic run for 1st....

Of course you might say the Saints are the worst team in their division but I'd say that is a stretch just based on the facts you mentioned in your original post.

    I just double-checked the numbers and you're right, from 2013-2016 the other 3 teams in the NFC South haven't been nearly as bad as the other 3 teams in the AFC South.  Carolina won 12, 7, 15 and 5 games.  Atlanta 4, 6, 8 and 8, TB 4, 2, 6 and 8.  Houston 2, 9, 9, 7, Tennessee 7, 2, 3, 7, Jax 3, 4, 5 and 2.  It's not even close.  85 to 60 by my count.

Payton's won 30 games in 4 years (up to now), Pagano 36.  I'd still think that if Payton was such a much better coach he'd have at least as many wins as Pagano if not more despite having to play tougher schedules each year.

  11. Sean Payton was being thrown around as a possible replacement for Chuck Pagano last year.  Did anyone actually want him?  If so, why?

He did go 11-5 in 2013, but then 7-9 and 7-9 in 2014 and 2015 and they're 5-8 this year.  Colts 11-5, 11-5, 8-8 (starting QB out half season), 6-7.

People say Andrew Luck is the only reason Pagano won so many games, but Payton has Drew Brees.

People say the only reason Pagano won so many games is they play in the AFC South.  The NFC South isn't any better.

When I look at the Saints roster I see a boatload more talent than what I see on the Colts.

Why would anyone have any more confidence in Payton than they have in Pagano?

  12. In short, assuming the Colts win today, the moment the Colts lose a game the Texans re-gain control of their own destiny.

As a matter of fact, assuming the Colts win today, the same is true of the Titans.  If the Colts lose another game, the Texans beat the Jags and Bengals and the Titans somehow manage to beat Jax, Denver and KC, the Titans/Texans game week 17 will be for the AFC South crown.

    I didn't count Tennessee out....

But Texas is smoked if they lose their 4th in  a row......They'd be 6-7..

....I dont see the turnaround you lay out there. ..and I dont much like the Texans chances against Cincy...

..and the Colts can afford an NFC loss at Minneosta

To me,  the Texans are in a slide..and they have to stop it Sunday...or you can get out the butter and jelly.

    Its toast time.

Fair enough.  One thing's for sure - neither team wants to lose!

Back to your actual post, I take the over on 46.5 all day.  The Colts will score 27+ against that depleted defense and the Colts won't be able to hold Miller, Fuller and Hopkins to under 20.

I like the Colts by more than 6.  The first game should have been a blowout.  This game is in Indy.  This Colts team is playing better than they were however many weeks ago.

    We'll see!

  14. "One team walks out of here as toast Sunday night" <==don't agree with this statement.

If it's the COLTS that lose, then yes, the season is over for them.

If it's the TEXANS that lose, the Colts still have to beat Minnesota and Oakland both on the road (plus Jacksonville at home) to take the division and that is NOT a guarantee.  I like Houston's chances against Tennessee and Cincinnati more than I like Indy's against Minn and Oak.

And don't count Tennessee out of this race.  Denver, @KC, @Jax and Hou - not impossible by any means (@KC clearly the toughest test of the 4).

  15. Right now we're 14th in yards per game, 7th in points per game, 11th in 1st downs per game and 5th in red zone TD percentage.

With all of that said, we're 25th in rush yards per game, 24th in yards per carry, 15th in rushing 1st downs and 18th in rushing touchdowns.

So, if bringing in a better back will take steps toward improving those abysmal numbers, I'm all for it.

Would it make sense to keep Gore as a backup?
