Take the 2017 Colts and add:

     - a healthy Andrew Luck

     - a star guard

     - a star ILB

     - a star #2 WR and

     - an offensive coaching staff who will enable the team to actually get receivers open and consistently sustain drives

then as long as we don't get decimated by injuries, we can beat any NFL team on a given day.  NE, Pitt and now Jax are our toughest challenges, but it'll come down to who coaches and plays better on the given day.

Look at this corps of good players from 2017:  Anderson, Hankins, Woods, Sheard, Simon, Hooker, Geathers, Hilton, Doyle.  Marlon Mack is showing promise.  Kelly, Costanzo and Haeg can hold their own (I wouldn't mind upgrading Haeg but we have much higher priorities).  Rogers contributes like a #3 WR.  Turbin before his injury was an excellent 3rd-down back.  It's not like we're starting with an empty cubpoard by any means.

I don't consider passrusher as high a priority as others.  Between Sheard and SImon, if we can give Ridgeway and Anderson time to develop I think we'll be able to pressure quarterbacks, especially if we can get the offense to give us leads.

If Wilson and Hairston can develop into NFL-calibre cornerbacks (and both showed some promise last year, as did Desir) that will only help.

  2. I looked at top 5 picks because sometimes the consensus top picks falls to 3 or 4, or sometimes a GM will reach for a projected #5 pick at #3.  The point is, this is the history of the approximate talent level we'll be looking at in the draft.  I see a lot more difference makers than I do outright busts.  Ballard needs to NAIL this pick.

    Myles Garrett
    Mitchell Trubisky
    Solomon Thomas
    Leonard Fournette
    Corey Davis

    Jared Goff
    Carson Wentz
    Joey Bosa
    Ezekiel Elliott
    Jalen Ramsey

    Jameis Winston
    Marcus Mariota
    Dante Fowler
    Amari Cooper
    Brandon Scherff

    Jadeveon Clowney
    Greg Robinson
    Blake Bortles
    Sammy Watkins
    Khalil Mack

    Eric Fisher
    Luke Joeckel
    Dion Jordan
    Lane Johnson
Ezekiel Ansah (ironically Barkevious Mingo was #6 that year!)

    Andrew Luck
    Robert Griffin
    Trent Richardson
    Matt Kalil
    Justin Blackmon

    Cam Newton
    Von Miller
    Marcell Dareus
    A.J. Green
Patrick Peterson (Julio Jones was #6 that year, and JJ Watt was #11)

    Sam Bradford
    Ndamukong Suh
    Gerald McCoy
    Trent Williams
    Eric Berry

  3. Another perspective - Tomlin gets "credit" for making a halftime adjustment to concentrate more on stopping the run.

Why in the world wouldn't the coach gameplan to stop Gore from carry 1???  Why wait until you're in a 17-3 hole to make that adjustment?

Even back when the Colts were winning Pagano was crticized for the team starting slow and having to play comeback - seems to me Tomlin did the same thing.

  4. Let's look at this from another perspective:

Look at the talent level of the Colts D vs. the Steelers O.  How many points would you expect the Steelers to be able to score?  How many did they score?  How many did they score on drives that started outside the Colts' 11 yard line?  Who outcoached who?

Look at the talent level of the Colts O vs. the Steelers D.  What coach would have done better against that Steeler D with the Colts O?

EDIT:  Hooker, Mewhort, Turbin, Geathers, Anderson, Simon - pick any 3 of those names, add them to this team and what's the outcome?  The Steelers have only 2 players on IR.

  5. There's a Netflix DVD called Greater about Brandon Burlsworth's life.

The movie is just okay, I've seen better documentaries, but without question he was an amazing human being and it was a sad waste for him to be taken away at such a young age.  You see him as a fat 12-year-old with an alcoholic father, you see him gain 85 pounds in one year because the Razorbacks coach told him he was too small, you see him run down Al Wilson in the game against Tennessee and then step on Clint Stoerner's foot, you see him at a Colts' practice talking to an actor playing Howard Mudd (I was hoping there would be actors playing Manning and James LOL).

The movie goes to great lengths to show what a devout man Brandon was, as was his whole family, and there's even a scene where his brother expresses his frustration with God and his mom tells him to have faith that to God everything makes sense.

Do I recommend it to Colts fan?  I'm going to say yes but with a very small y.  I think it's worth a watch but nothing to go out of your way for.

  6. This team can beat the Browns, Bengals, 49ers and Bills on a given day, sweep the AFC South and steal at least one game they're not supposed to win like Seattle, Pittsburgh, Baltimore or Denver.  That's 11-5.  Once the playoffs start, who knows.

  7. Brady had 4 TDs against 0 picks in the SUPER BOWL against the #1 defense in the league on a day his team needed ALL 4 OF THEM to win. I don't care who your coach is, I don't care who the other players on your team are, that's UNHEARD OF.

And then in this latest game to keep his composure and lead his team on that epic, historic comeback.

OH - and he was the QB of a team that also won 3 other Super Bowls and countless playoff games.

Whose resume even comes close to that?

  8. So far I haven't seen anyone discuss the possibility that our starters are not on the team yet.  Aside from POSSIBLY Sheard (and even he's debatable), all of our LB signings so far smell like ensuring that as a worst-case scenario we have serviceable backups.  I will not be at all surprised if a couple studs come out of the draft.  The FA signees are more than enough to at least hold down the fort while our rookies get their feet wet and take over as starters when they're ready.

  9. Just now, Smonroe said:

As long as we have 12, we're contenders.

Pretty much this, but don't leave out 13 either.  And if 21 can regain his 2013 form somehow that's bonus.

Add a stud runstuffer, a stud passrusher and a solid #2 corner to this team and you have a team that when fully healthy can compete with any other NFL team on a given day.

  10. Trade player personnel between the Colts and Patriots the day after the Patriots get knocked out of the playoffs by Denver last year.  How do the 2016 Patriots do?  How do the 2016 Colts do?

Same exercise but Colts and Steelers the day after the divisional round.

My two cents:  I'm not sure Machiano could have done the same job as Patricia.  He'd certainly have done much, much better and he'd have had a lot more freedom to come up with blitzes and stunts knowing his team isn't going to just get physically outran and outhit on every play, but I think it's a stretch to think that Machiano with Pagano as mentor would compare to Patricia with Belichik.  NE's defensive personnell hasn't even been CLOSE to as bad as Indy's since the 2002 season when NE had a decent scoring defense but was #22 against the run.  How would they do with Indy's personnel?  I don't know.

You also have to compare Chudzinski with McDaniels.  With LeGarrette Blount behind that NE OL, I think Chud would have put in more power running than NE did.  Would Chud have taken advantage of how basically uncoverable Edelman and Amendola are on those *(@#(*#@# crossing routes, especially with Bennett (before that Gronk) clearing out the middle?  I don't know.

    I'll talk Steelers later.

I wouldn't go that far. Dak Prescott in his rookie year isn't even close to Peyton Manning in the middle of his prime. They reminded me more of the Chargers from the Ladainian Tomlinson heydays.

The 2006 Chargers specifically would be a good comparison even though the team that took them out didn't go on to win the Super Bowl.  Ezekiel and Dak would probably be happy to be compared to LT and Rivers (not to mention Gates/Witten, and all the talent they have on defense).

  12. The 2016 Cowboys reminded me a bit of the 2005 Colts.  Consensus best team in the league during the regular season but just ran into a super-hot team at the wrong time.  It'll be interesting to see if Green Bay ends up winning the whole thing the way Pittsburgh did.

Of course, the 2005 Colts were bashed as playoff chokers while the 2016 Cowboys were more like "better luck next year".

    Thoughts?

Poor word choice.  I get the feeling that many believe Irsay made a bad decision to not let PM be a member of the Colts in the manner PM wanted, mainly part ownership.  At this point, I would say PM getting part ownership is premature.  If it was written on a contingent basis, that a certain level of performance had to be achieved before compensation could be converted to equity, then yes, maybe part ownership makes sense.

What if PM stinks as an executive.  Now Irsay has a minority owner who has displayed an inability to contribute effectively.  You can't fire a part owner.  You can only buy him out....and only if he agrees to sell.

I agree with Irsay.   I would only let PM have an equity position under very narrow circumstances, circumstances that PM probably wouldn't want.  And, I would not give total personnel control to a HC, not even Gruden.

HEY!!!!!!  Quit being open-minded and making sense.  That's not allowed around here.

  14. Forget division winners, forget seedings, even forget record to a lesser extent (a 10-6 team with a brutal schedule could be better than an 11-5 team with a soft one).

Who were the 6 best teams in the AFC season (not necessarily in any particular order)?

    I say:

Pats, Raiders, Chiefs, Steelers, Dolphins, Ravens.  I'm not penalizing teams for losing their QB to injury.  Texans and Titans are right on the fringe of that list but I put Baltmore ahead of them because they had a tougher schedule and were more consistent (Tennessee, for example, had good wins over Denver and KC bracketed by losses to SD and Jax).

  15. Since I can't see the Colts win, the next-best thing would be to see the Patriots not only lose, but lose to a quarterbackless AFC South team.  Nobody's talking about the fact that the Texans defense was so good all year that it not only gave up THE LEAST YARDS IN THE ENTIRE NFL, they did it without their best player and did it while dealing with an inept offense that had them on the field A LOT.  All people are talking about is how they won the inept AFC South by default.

There's no greater punch in the gut than being the #1 seed and going one-and-done in the playoffs.

It's going to be nearly impossible.  It's going to be cold up there in Foxboro, and bad quarterbacks vs. Bill Belichik is typically a one-sided matchup.

But I've seen crazier things happen!

Like he said he doesn't have a QB like Luck I guarantee you we win just as much if not more even with rex as HC

Rex may never have had a QB like Luck but *not* having a QB like Luck gave him a HECK of a lot more money to spend on DEFENSE, yet 4 years in a row his scoring defense was #19 or worse.

We are not taking about Ron. But I bet he would won more too. But rex took mark butt fumble Sanchez to the AFC championship game

Rex would have been a good example.  Each of his first two years as an NFL head coach he took his team to the AFCCG, even one-and-doneing the Patriots out of the playoffs once.  But then over the next 6 years he never returned to the postseason, at times criminally mismanaging the QB position (Geno Smith????).  The 2 years he took the Jets to the AFCCG he had #1 and #6 scoring defenses, each of the next 4 years his scoring defense was never above #19.  Ironically Todd Bowles took over and had them right back up to #9 last year.

  18. John Harbaugh had a spectacular run from 2008 to 2012 winning a playoff game each year and winning a super bowl (over his brother Jim).  But from 2013 to 2016 he missed the playoffs 3 times and never won his division.  Time to give up on him and go another direction?

Sean Payton - similar situation, won a Super Bowl in 2009 but is coming off 3 straight losing seasons.  Time to make a change?

I'm sure that if I did some digging I could find other examples.

When, in general, is it time to give up on a regime and make a change?

  19. I'll throw my two cents into the hat in the ring.

With Luck as our QB, I simply NEVER feel like the game is over.  Ever.  Not even when we were down 38-10 to the Chiefs.

How many other QBs can you say that about?  Brady, Roth, Rogers, Brees - anyone else?  I don't feel that way with Rivers, Eli, Flacco, Wilson, Mariota (yet), Prescott (yet), Carr (yet), Ryan (admittedly I don't know much about him - is he as good as Luck at always keeping his team in the game?), Cousins, Stafford (who has that potential).  Newton deserves to be at least mentioned here but I just don't see him as the comeback artist Luck is.

Yes, it's true that some of the time Luck is part of the REASON the Colts need to come back at the end.  But a) he counterbalances games like those with plenty of games like Minnesota, the Jets, the 2nd Titans game and the Packers game where he gets us out to a huge early lead that the defense and running game SHOULD be able to help him hold, and b) all QBs make occasional mistakes.  Other than possibly Ryan is anyone in the second list as good as Luck at getting his team out to big leads?

The 4 QBs I mentioned are the only 4 QBs I would even CONSIDER swapping Luck for.

If top 5 in the league isn't elite your definition of elite is too narrow
