  1. Schmeig was in Jacksonville's camp last week before the Colts nabbed him.

Yesterday during OTAs, McGlynn had to take snaps at center.

Now with Schmeig and Holmes arriving to town, you have 3 centers to work with and McGlynn can slide over to his natural guard position.

  2. so does that mean chapman can go as well

    Don't think so on Chapman.

I believe since he was on the active roster for a portion of the season when he practiced with the team following PUP than he can't particiapte this weekend.

Not sure if Harnish was ever on the active. Maybe early in the season but not more than for a week.

Again, we will have an official list later this afternoon but don't look for Chapman to be on it.

  3. Yes he is. A select number of first year players who did not compete in a game can particiapte.

An official release should be announced later today but I do believe Harnish will be participating this weekend along with a few other second-year guys (Griff Whalen, Jabin Sambrano and Monte Simmons).

Once I get an official word, I will let you know.

  4. I seem to think 11-5 is a reasonable expectation.

Obviously a game or two here and there but when you crunch the numbers I keep on hovering right around 11-5.

Let's say 5-1 against the AFC South.

Go 2-2 against the NFC West (tough making two trips out west and getting Seattle at home).

Go 3-1 against the AFC West (split @San Diego and Denver).

Then maybe drop a game @Cincy.

Critique how you'd like and nothing is in stone but if I HAD to make a prediction this is how I'd see it.

  5. Really?    We're going to judge NFL potential by college stats?    OK....

Here are the stats for AJ McCarron against mostly SEC competition over 3 years....

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/480215/aj-mccarron

And here are the numbers for David Fales against competition from a league that I don't even know it's name for one year.  Before that,  he was in Junior College....

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/480550/david-fales

Are Fales' numbers better?   Yes,  but not by a lot,  and certainly nothing to get excited about when you compare the level of competition for the two QB's...

McCarron has competed at the highest level of competition his entire college career, has performed exceptionally well,  he's performed well on the biggest stage in college football....

This is NOT to say that McCarron is a slam dunk success in the NFL,  or that Fales will fail in the NFL.    That's not my view at all.  Only that level of competition is a key component when evaluating....

McCarron might fail in the NFL, and Fales might succeed.    But I wouldn't come to that conclusion based on their stats.

I think when looking at past SEC quarterbacks that have relied heavily on a strong defense and rush attack, McCarron is clearly the best.

Greg McElroy was/is an NFL quarterback for the last two seasons and I think McCarron clearly has better tools than his predecessor.

This is a huge season for McCarron. Teams are going to continue to stack the box and force his arm to beat them becaue the Tide still return T.J. Yeldon.

I'm not completely sold on the 2014 quarterback class as a whole.

Is it better than 2013? Yes.

Should it be in the same conversation as 2012? Definitely not.

Boyd, Bridgewater, Faels and Miller all have a lot to prove this fall.

  6. I was able to talk with Boyett's defensive coordiantor at Oregon, Nick Aliotti, and he raved about the type of player the Colts are getting at safety.

Check Colts.com tomorrow for a blog post on Aliotti's comments.

Aliotti has been Oregon's d-coordinator for 14 seasons and was gushing about the aggressive, high-motor, instinctual Boyett.

He said that Boyett excelled on special teams while at Oregon and that will be a big part on seeing where he will eventually fit on the 53-man roster.

Bethea and Landry are locks to start and after that it's special teams guys like Lefeged/Brown and then Howell/Boyett who will fight it out for the final few safety spots.

A stat I loved on Boyett---in 3 BCS games at Oregon he avearged over 13 tackles in each contest, including a Rose Bowl record 17 against Wisconsin in 2012.

  7. If Toler can be that guy to have a firm grasp at the No. 2 CB position than I think the secondary has a chance to be one of the team's strengths, if it can stay healthy.

Butler is very solid option in the Nickel and Vaughn should be in the mix as well for the third or fourth cornerback spot. Not a ton of depth at either corner or safety but I like the frontline guys.

  8. The rookies dont get to start practicing till Rookie Traning camp right?

Correct. The minicamp begins with a two-hour practice starting at 1:10 p.m. on Friday and then another two-hour pactice at 1:10 on Saturday. Sunday's practice is from 10:20-11:45 a.m.

Coach Pagano is scheduled to meet with the media on both Friday and Sunday, with the coordiantors available on Saturday.

  9. Kevin.....

If I happen to miss the chat,  here's a question for you ahead of time.....

The Colts signed Dax Swanson from Sam Houston State.    I believe he was listed as a cornerback which is what I think he played in college.

But now, on the Colts roster,  he's listed as a safety.

Typo,  or a real position switch?     Can you tell us?

    Thanks.....

I believe that's a typo. He should be listed as a cornerback. Sorry about that.

  10. This Friday, I will host a one-hour chat called “Horseshoe Roundup” beginning at 11 a.m. During the offseason, the chat will take place every two weeks and it will move to a weekly schedule once the regular season gets closer.

For this week, the 2013 NFL Draft is behind us and the Colts will have their rookie class pour into the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center in a week.

What did you think of the Colts draft? Did you like Ryan Grigson’s approach to this year’s class? Have any of the undrafted free agents caught your eye?

We will concentrate on these topics but whatever questions you have, I will try and address in the course of an hour.

Feel free to join the chat room around 11 on Friday and we will talk Colts football for an hour.

  11. Dominique Jones? I'm not really sure

    Correct, that was Dominique.

I also wish the picutres would have captions on them as well but they do offer some great insight into a part of the offseason that no one really gets a chance to see.

With on the field work starting, hopefully the pictures provide a closer look at the installation process.

  12. I am sure the info is being loaded into his head as we speak :), the question is, will the others get it as fast as Luck gets it? That has been the eternal question, right? :)

That is definitely a good point. I guess some good news is that you have Fleener at TE and Whalen at WR who both have experience in Hamilton's previous systems.

This is what OTAs is all about--learning the system. Hopefully come training camp, everything is dialed in and we can see this offense become one of the best in the league.

  13. I'm just intrigued about all the parts and how they will fit.

At receiver, you have one of the game's most reliable threats that seems to thrive when the game is on the line in Reggie Wayne. He is the obviously No. 1 WR but a trio of speedy receivers, Hilton/Brazill/DHB, will flank him. Don't count out Nathan Palmer or Griff Whalen either.

At running back, Ballard should be a 1,000-yard back in year two and he will be in a system that leans more on a power rushing attack. The addition of two veteran offensive linemen in free agency along with Thornton and Holmes in the draft should only enhance Ballard's production. Throw in some sort of combination of Brown/Carter/Williams and the Colts will have three different types of backs to spell Ballard.

At tight end, Allen showed in year one that he has the makings of becoming a big-time tight end in the NFL. Fleener should flourish in Hamilon's system and be a matchup problem all over the field. Don't count out Havili and is h-back type of role he can play catching the ball out of the backfield.

Andrew Luck should be grinning ear-to-ear thinking about the possiblities.

  14. I'd be shocked if Eifert is there at 24.

Perhaps no other prospect is blowing up quite like him. Some pundits have him labeled as the best pure skill position player in the entire draft.

Mock drafts have him going as high as No. 6 to Cleveland. He had back problems at Notre Dame and while is blocking might need some work, his pass catching skills are elite.

Wherever he ends up, Eifert will be a dynamic receiver from Day 1.

  15. Thanks,  Kevin....

Good of you to stop by and weigh in...

As you might imagine,  all of us here who follow the draft closely are going a little stir crazy waiting....

Too many rumors and possibilities to keep them all straight....   and while I know you didn't just give away company secrets, your two cents are worth more than anyone else's here....   so it's very much appreciated...

haha I enjoy reading the forum. I'm going to try and be more active in the future around here and will definitely poke my head into the chat room Thursday/Friday/Saturday to talk draft with everyone.

Like Ryan said about the draft--"It's the lifeblood of an organization."

Going to be a fun three days around the complex and for Colts fans everywhere.

  16. Datone Jones  DE UCLA

    Tank Carradine OLB  Florida State

    Desmond Trufant  CB  Washington State

    Manti Te'o  ILB   Notre Dame

    Deandre Hopkins WR  Clemson

    Round 3

    Barrett Jones G/C  Alabama

    Brian Schwenkie G

    Corey Lemonier DE /OLB  Auburn

    Brandon Williams  NT

    Travis Fredrick  G/C

From that list, I would take Tank Carradine and Barrett Jones.

I wouldn't mind Datone Jones either at No. 24. People above have already discussed it but he has a chance to slide into Redding's spot down the road.

However, I love Carradine's upside and he would give the Colts another edge rusher.

    B. Jones is extremely versatile and could play anywhere along the interior of the offensive line.

Ryan Grigson has talked about this being a great "trench draft" and these two picks would follow in line with that statement.

  17. Looking for a place to have your Colts questions answered at the end of the week? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

This Friday, I will host a one-hour chat called “Horseshoe Roundup” beginning at 11 a.m. During the offseason, the chat will take place every two weeks and it will move to a weekly schedule once the regular season gets closer.

The chat will cover a variety of topics with the focus being the pertinent news during that time period. I will take your questions and try to answer as many as I can during the hour.

For this week, we have the draft less than a week away. Colts GM Ryan Grigson had his pre-draft press conference on Thursday and he covered a ton of areas during his 30-minute meeting with the media. What will the Colts do at No. 24?

How about the release of the 2013 NFL Schedule? What do you think of the Colts schedule? How about Peyton Manning returning to Indianapolis on Oct. 20?

We will concentrate on these two topics but whatever questions you have, I will try and address in the course of an hour.

Last week’s chat log is linked here.

Feel free to join the chat via this link around 11:00 a.m. on Friday (scroll to the bottom of the page) and we will talk for an hour about whatever is on your mind.

  18. Just throwing a few more names out there--how about LaVon Brazill or Cassius Vaughn?

Brazill showed flashes of some burst on both special teams and at receiver last year, and as long as he can hold onto the football than he deserves at least a shot. If your top three wideouts are Reggie, T.Y. and DHB than Brazill would be a prime guy to be your lead KR, along with seeing action in multiple receiver sets.

Vaughn had the most returns of anyone on the roster last year (10, which is extremely low for a team-high) and if he isn't a starting cornerback than he might find more of a niche as the lead KR, along with playing some corner on passing downs.

  19. Looking for a place to have your Colts questions answered at the end of the week? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

Beginning on Friday, I will host a one-hour chat called “Horseshoe Roundup” beginning at 11 a.m. During the offseason, the chat will take place every two weeks and it will move to a weekly schedule once the regular season gets closer.

The chat will cover a variety of topics with the focus being the pertinent news during that time period. I will take your questions and try to answer as many as I can during the hour.

For this week, we have the recent signing of wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey. What are your thoughts on the former No. 7 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft? Is the Indianapolis offense the ideal fit for the speedster to find a niche?

How about the other free agent pickups? Colts GM Ryan Grigson and his personnel department have been busy adding pieces on both sides of the football over the last month.

Lastly, the preseason schedule was just announced with the regular season schedule coming later this month.

Feel free to join the chat via this link around 11:00 a.m. on Friday (scroll to the bottom of the page) and we will talk for an hour about whatever is on your mind.
