  1. For this week, the Colts rookies have left the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center and the offseason is truly upon us with players reporting to training camp four weeks from tomorrow.

What questions do you have about the Colts with training camp starting on July 27th.

This will be the second-to-last chat before training camp begins. We will have another one on July 19th and then once camp begins, we will move to a weekly chat.

Feel free to join the chat via this link around 11:00 a.m. on Friday (scroll to the bottom of the page) and we will talk for an hour about whatever is on your mind.

  2.

I wanted to make sure I included that quote again in the story because we are still getting a bunch of questions about the schemes.

The other quotes in the Gilbert article haven't been used yet so I wanted to combine that to see how the depth, blocking schemes and protecting 12 will add up in 2013.

  3. Darius Butler hands down. Lead the team in interceptions and was very solid in coverage and came up big for us the 2nd time playing Jacksonville when our secondary was depleted with injuries

    Agreed.

Really liked what Butler gave us and I think he can be a really good nickel cornerback in 2012.

Check back with Colts.com on Thursday for a look back at that Jacksonville game you mentioned.

  4. Now that I've read the source for this, I can say that this is entirely supposition. The writer (and the source the writer quotes) doesn't provide any team-related basis for this.

Bradshaw is our best back, assuming he's healthy, so it shouldn't surprise any of us if he's the starter. But that hasn't been determined just yet, and it can't be until Bradshaw takes the field. If he earns it over Ballard, awesome.

Exactly. Nothing is set in stone at that position and there's no factual information stating that the "Colts expect Bradshaw to start over Ballard."

Could that be the case come July? Sure.

But as of now it's pure specualtion and let's be honest, whoever starts should not really matter at RB.

Both guys I think will get pretty their fair share of carries and be vital to the offensive balance.

  5. Reggie is just 32 catches away from 1,000 for his career.

If, (and hopefully when) he reaches that mark Reggie will join Hines Ward and Marvin Harrison as the only players in NFL history to acheive that mark with just one team.

  6. I think Cleary goes to the PS....

I suspect Link gets first shot and Sowell gets a look as well....

In my opinion this is how we would probably see it.

Obviously, ideally it would be Castonzo and Cherilus at the bookends for 16+ games. But yes, I think this is probably how it would fall in order. Although, I still really like Sowell.

  7. For this week, the Colts just wrapped up a three-day minicamp including an open practice at Lucas Oil Stadium on Wednesday.

What questions do you have about the Colts now that the offseason picks back up before training camp begins on July 27.

What did you think of your first look at safety LaRon Landry? Are you pleased with the past month or

two with training camp next on the schedule?

How about Ahmad Bradshaw? What are your thoughts on the two-time Super Bowl Champion joining the Colts?

Feel free to join the chat via this link around 11:00 a.m. on Friday (scroll to the bottom of the page) and we will talk for an hour about whatever is on your mind.

  8. I don't think the presence of Matt Hasselbeck can be over stated.

From a pure on-the-field standpoint he obviously fits the mold for a quality backup.

But what he can bring in the quarterbacks room is invaluble and it's pretty clear that Luck truly appreciates having a guy with so much knowledge as his backup.

  9. don't bother.. i've been asking for highlights for quite some time now, but always get the same answer.. "FORMATIONS" :/

like no scout can get in on the "OPEN" practice

NFL scouts are not allowed to attent open practices per league rules.

Local TV stations have to turn their cameras off once the individual portion of drills are finished.

I understand the gripe people have but it's just a hard thing to juggle with today's technology.

  10. A follow-up, Kevin....

Will there be any edited hi-lites?

As someone living in Southern California,  I'm looking for any possible video....

    Thanks...

    I'll check on that.

Again, it's a coach rule that no specific formations/plays being developed are shot so highlights would have to simply be the throw and then a catch.

I'll ask our production staff and see what they are allowed to do today.

If I'd had to guess, I'd say no.

Will try and be as detailed as possible when it comes to my practice report.

  11. does anybody know if there's maybe going to be a live stream of the practice on colts.com? like they did for jeff saturday's retirement recently?

i'd really love to see some live action with all the new players on this team..

    No live stream.

Sorry about that but with online access to that footage than every NFL team would be able to see formations, plays, etc.

  12. I tend to shy away from the breakout seasons with XX mount of catches and XXX amount of yards with this offense.

Sure, I've said Ballard will be over 1,000 yards and Pagano has talked about Fleener doubling his 2012 production.

But as has been stated above, this offense is so balanced this year that I could see games where DHB only catches a pass or two.

So many differenet weapons allows for Pep Hamilton to exploit the most favorable matchup.

  13. Kevin, a related question. Do you think Jim, Grigs, and Coach would ever consider doing Hard Knocks? I'm ambivalent to the Colts doing it but I love that show. HBO does a great job producing the segments and bringing the human aspect to the game.

If I had to guess, I would say no.

Can't really see the benefit in doing such a thing besides some national exposure.

The Colts got that last season for unfortuante circumstances and hopefully this year it comes with a deep playoff run.

I chuckle when thinking about HBO filming at Anderson University.

  14. no. i don't even like to watch those short locker-room video-interviews, all generic and usual Q&A "we're working to get better every day", "the guys are great and hungry to get out there", "learning the ins and outs of the offense/defense", bla-bla-bla..

i asked for video highlights from practices in colts mailbag, my question got published, but got no real answer, "..we are doing everything we can to make fans experience more enjoyable.."

lord, how that frustrates me!!  :hairout:

and since then, i've seen in almost every photo-gallery a cameraman in the background, but still nothing..

can't wait for the off-season's end!!

To maybe help give you a more definite answer on that...

Practice highlights are allowed for only indivdiual drills. This is a practice by virtually every NFL team around the league. No team wants their formations on camera, seems like a plausible idea to me for obvious reasons. So that's why you don't see highlights of specific plays during practice.

Hopefully this helps clears some things up.

  15. Forgot to mention yesterday in my post OTA tweets but Whalen nearly made a spetacular catch in the corner of the end zone.

It was near the end of practice and I believe Luck threw a fade near the far pylon. I assumed Fleener was the man over there but it was Whalen.

He got some separation from Vontae Davis and leaped high in the air before coming down with only one foot in bounds.

It was a tremendous play from an athleticisim standpoint to not only catch the ball but also nearly getting two feet in.

The more I watch Whalen, the more I think he will find his name on the final roster.

  16. Anyone know if Driskill is still with the team or was he just at rookie minicamp and let go. I seen in the pictures of Rookie camp he was wearing #37, but now someone else is wearing that number. Just wondering what the story is here with Driskill.

    He is not.

He participated in rookie minicamp a few weeks back as a tryout invitee but did not make the team.

Of the 15 or so tryout guys the Colts brought in only one, CB Allen Chapman made the team.

Ironically enough, Chapman took the roster spot that his college teammate at Kansas State, CB Nigel Malone, had previously occupied.

  17. I dont think you can design a defense to create turnovers...and you shouldnt count on it.

    Its cant be a priority

Interceptions happen more frequently if you get the other teams into long yardage situation but i've always thought that 3-and-outs are more important than turnovers..  Fumbles are largely flukes and poor ball carrying technique..

3-and-outs or stops in your opponents end (a stat that's not kept) are talent and scheme.

Turnovers are often just luck...Luck is a boy from Stanford.its not a defensive startegy

Example: New Orleans won the Super Bowl with an average defense which got a lot of turnovers.

The 'D' crumbled after that. Stone last in 2012

Also, the Bears (the top turnover team in the NFL in recent years:) often fade later in the season when they turnovers dry up as they see teams a second time

I agree with the fact that designing a defense to "create" turnovers can be difficult.

I'm not saying this unit should jump more routes and constatnly pry at stripping the football. But I think adding players like Toler and Landry, along with others up front will naturally allow for more players around the ball.

It's been mentioned above but a stronger pass rush will almost certainly contribute to a higher numer of turnovers, and I think that will be the case in 2013.

  18. I'm really critical of the writers they have on NFL.com, but Jeff Darlington is one of the better ones.  His pieces are always well-written

    Thought Darlington was really good.

He's always extremely nice when he visits the complex and doesn't have the "national" attitude that some writers tend to carry with them when covering a smaller market.

  19. New game, rule's a little different - You can have 24 to 26 players.

    Here's my very early picks:

    Chapman, Franklin, McKinney

Redding, Hughes, Jean Francois, Moala, Nevis

    Freeman, Angerer, Conner, Sheppard

    Mathis, Werner, Walden, Sidbury

    Bathea, Landry, Lefeged, Boyett

    Davis, Toler, Butler, Vaughn, Price

Tell me where I'm wrong!  (Go ahead NCF, take me literally.  I can take it)

Great game and love to see what people think on both side of the football.

Not going to comment too much but it's pretty clear that there are some great position battles heading into training camp.

  20. The wife & i will be in sec. 619 row 19 seats 20 & 21. I've wanting tickets for years, but never had the coin. Finally that has changed. We will be at the broncos & texans games for sure plus 2 more. We have a 4.5hrs drive to indy so we wont make all the games. See you there. Go Blue!!

    Great to hear, Timo.

Those are definitely two of the marquee games on the home schedule this season and who knows, maybe if things go according to plan, you might be back in Lucas Oil for some home playoff games.

  21. so.... does Mr Bowen get to see the colts practice?? or interview coaches or players??  or have any connections that the normal fan does not have??

I am not trying to be rude to Mr. Bowen, just wondering if he has some inside access or if he is just a fan voicing his opinions...

Pretty much what Jon said above.

I'm able to watch practice and participate in media sessions as well.

I work at the complex every day and have worked with the Colts since 2010.

  22. Kevin....

If someone misses the chat (as I did today) will there be -- at some point -- a transcript of the chat posted somewhere?

    Thanks....

We are in the works of trying to set something up like that.

I will definitely pass this along to our IT people and hopefully we can get something worked out.
