  1. For this week, the Colts are in the process of wrapping up OTAs with a mandatory minicamp on the horizon June 11-13.

What questions do you have about the Colts through over half of their OTAs? Have you been pleased with the Colts offseason with the month of June about to hit?

We will concentrate on these topics but whatever questions you have, I will try and address in the course of an hour.

Head over to the chat room around 11:00 a.m. on Friday and we will talk for an hour about whatever is on your mind.

  2. Indy's CB's will be fine IF the Colts can get a better rush on the QB.

Indy took a "pass rusher" first rather than a CB for a reason.

    You make a great point.

How often around the league we see a pass rush cover up a secondary's lack of coverage ability is remarkable.

A strong pass rush would definitely help out our pass defense and hopefully creat more turnovers than last season.

  3. I will have a blog on Monday morning on Hasselbeck and it's great to hear what the 15-year veteran has brought to the quarterbacks room.

Pretty impressive for a guy with his talent to be able to take a backup role in an effort to try and win a Super Bowl.

Hasselbeck is invaluable to that room and not only is his on the field talent is not backup worthy, his knowledge and wisdom will be vital for Luck and Harnish.

  4. As Brian pointed out it is OTA but pass coverage is probably the one thing that is most game-like during this time of the year.

Yes, it's not full contact and no pads but watching a guy like Toler break on the ball is pretty impressive.

I know there's not a ton of quality depth at corner but if the core 4 can stay healthy I think the secondary will force many more turnovers in 2013.

  5. One area that I think/hope we can exploit in the red zone is using Coby Fleener's size.

Fleener did not put up the numbers that many thought in year one but I think with Pep Hamilton as OC, you will see the former Stanford tight end taking a larger role in this offense and in particular in the red zone.

Health hampered Fleener in his rookie season and hopefully if he can stay on the field than Hamilton can use teh 6'6" tight end as a major red zone target.

This time doesn't really have that guy they can just throw fade passes to near the goal line so hopefully Fleener answers that bell.

  6. I've now been a member of this community for a full year....   I've always known about the Blogs,  but have always concentrated here on the forums....

But what I didn't know is that YOU have a blog.     That's very different.     And now that I've taken a quick look,  I'll be visiting every day!

    Much appreciated....

Glad you were able to find it.

I try and tweet out a morning blog around 7:30-8:00 AM (eastern time, not sure how that translates to you in the UK) to get some morning reading for all Colts fans.

The blogs covers a variety of topics and while things might be slow the next few weeks, remember training camp is less than two months away so things will take off in the blog area starting in late July.

  7. Glad you guys enjoyed the blog.

Any time you can talk to the assistant coaches it's a treat because they offer another voice to more specific information that maybe Pagano doesn't always touchon.

We will have much more coverage from them in the coming weeks and look tomorrow for some highlights from the defensive group of coaches.

  8. I believe #38 is Sergio Brown but this person looks like he is taking RB reps. Did Brown and Williams switch numbers?

That is Sergio. The DB's are just going through drills where a coach tosses them a ball (used to help create turnovers).

    Kerwynn Williams is #37.

  9. Werner can and is participating in OTAs.

As far as training camp goes, yes the contract needs to be done before them.

No need to worry about it. I fully expect for something to be worked out before Anderson. Remember last year both Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener took up until nearly the final hour before signing their contracts.

  10. I'm guessing PS at best. He hasn't been a playmaker or had good numbers at any level, why would he all of a sudden be a good NFL player?

We already have a guy about his size, faster, and with more experience, who can fill the tasks he's talking about.

His name is Coby Fleener and I hope they take advantage of his skills more this season.

I tend to agree with this. I think Kelley does provide a unique asset to the receiving game but how much different is he then Fleener?

At the end of the day, you rarely carry more than 5 WRs on the 53-man roster.

Obviously you have Reggie, DHB and T.Y.

Brazill should be No. 4 and then I think the 5th will come from Palmer/Whalen.

Fleener can be your red zone threat and at 6'2" 216 pounds DHB should be a matchup problem against smaller corners.

  11.

This is as nice of a 30 minute conference call that I can remember!!  I think I enjoyed every comment here.  Thank your for sharing Colts.com!!!  To be:  Highlights:

    • Luck calling some of his own plays "as a natural progression" in year two as well as "familiarity with Pep's offense.  I also like the 'calculated' downfield strikes that do not waste plays.
    • I like hearing all 3 veteran back's names mentioned...especially Carter...and Brown.
    • DHB looks like he is going at it....and we may have Reggie Wayne to thank for that by saying earlier..."Time to go to work.)   :)  :pass:  :coltslogo:  :coltslogo:

Agreed. I thought the conference call was very informative for fans.

It was great to hear them show their appreciation for having Coach back in good health.

Then Coach returned the favor with some nice insight.

  12. For this week, OTAs are in full swing and the Colts rookie minicamp took place this past weekend.

What questions do you have about the Colts 2013 rookie class? What are your impressions of this team with a 90-man roster in place and training camp just two months out?

We will concentrate on these topics but whatever questions you have, I will try and address in the course of an hour. Also, I sat in on Chuck Pagano’s conference call with season ticket holders on Wednesday night and I will share some of the head coach’s thoughts during our chat.

Feel free to head over to the chat room around 11:00 and talk some Colts football to end the week.

  13. He also had a quote where he said he thinks Montori Hughes is going to be a special player.

That quote on Hughes was impressive and something you don't usually hear many coaches say.

I posted 5 highlights from the offensive side of the ball on the front page of Colts.com and the defensive side of things will come tomorrow.

  14. Kevin ive been on the Chapman bandwagon all along, this kid is a beast. To think what he did at Alabama on a bum leg his senior year is absolutely mind boggling.I can not wait to see the beast unleashed :rawr:  Go :coltslogo:  and thanks for the info

    Couldn't agree more with you.

The kid truly gets what being a 3-4 nose tackle is all about. I remember his draft day conference call and how he said it was "disrespectful" when teams did not double team at Alabama.

He love the nose tackle mentality and that's pretty impressive for a position that won't be atop many statistics.

  15. I definitely think Ballard has the potential to be a 1,000+-yard back this season. I know he really wants that yards per carry number to rise above 4.0 yards and that should happen in 2013.

The bigger question for me comes what do you do on third down. I think Ballard is a nice receiver but virtually no team in the league has the same running back on the field for all three downs.

Donald Brown would be the likely candidate and has shown the ability to excel in open space.

Does Kerwynn Williams get a shot to showcase his 45 catches that he had last season?

  16. Couldn't disagree more.

The offseason additions plus the return of Chapman will greatly enhance the defensive front.

A little depth chart pondering---let's say RJF/Nevis, Chapman/Franklin, Redding/Moala. You still have guys like Hughes, Guy, Rico, McKinney, Tevaseu who will be battling to fill out the final spots.

  17. Who is the guy on pic #60?  Dude is huge.

    Joseph

I believe that's undrafted free agent linebacker C.O. Prime. About 85% sure on that.

I will try and answer any picture questions for people. I know captions would help but unfortunately there are way too many pictures to sort through each day and tag for our photographer.

The pictures are great insight and hopefully the numbers on their shorts can be seen in the photos.

  18. I haven't charted anything, and probably won't; I didn't even keep notes. But I went back and carefully watched a couple of Bills games from the end of last season. One was Bills vs. Colts in Week 12, a game the Colts won 20-13. The other was Bills vs. Seahawks in Week 15, and the Seahawks stomped the Bills 50-17. I really wanted to watch the Seahawks game because I figured the Bills defense was under duress all game and maybe I'd see something interesting about Sheppard's play.

    Some observations:

    • The Bills didn't use Sheppard as an every down back. He's off the field in virtually every sub package situation. They preferred Nick Barnett and a mix of a few other guys, including using Bryan Scott as a nickel backer. At least at this later point in the season.
    • Related to the previous point, it's interesting that Sheppard was still one of the team leaders in tackles, so maybe they started using him less later in the season.
    • Most of the Seahawks big run plays came against the Bills sub packages, when Sheppard was off the field.
    • Sheppard did a reasonably solid job against the Seahawks in play action situations, including chasing Russell Wilson down when he scrambled.
    • He was also decent in coverage, and although he got beat a couple times and even made a mistake, I don't think he was a liability.
    • The Bills mostly stayed in their base defense inside the redzone, with Sheppard manning the middle. He was active in this role, and especially against the Seahawks, most of the action came on the outside when they were close to the end zone (corner routes, zone reads, etc.)
    • Not a difference maker; he had a sack on Wilson that was mostly because of the way the play worked out, with his teammates wiping out some blockers and him shooting up the middle. He did close on Wilson well, so credit there.
    • He didn't make any plays against the Colts, but he was effective against the run, stepping in nicely to hold the point of attack and even redirecting some plays. Not a liability, but he's not very often the first player to the ball.
    • Plays with decent body control, uses his size and body well. Not very good in the open field, kind of stiff in the hips and not great speed or acceleration.

I came away from this very shallow analysis feeling like Sheppard is very much like Kavell Conner. Maybe better in coverage, and probably more range. Much better suited for inside backer in our front, while Conner is probably better suited as the strongside backer in a 4-3 base defense (which is what he was drafted to be, and where he played his best in his first two years). I also think he holds his place in the middle of run plays better than Conner does, and maybe gets off of blocks better. I'd probably rate him a half grade higher than Conner, but very similar style player. Think a poor man's David Harris.

A Bills fan posted here right after the trade was made, basically saying Sheppard was a waste of a player who never makes plays and doesn't make a difference. I couldn't reconcile that with what I remembered of Sheppard, so I went to find out for myself. I might watch another game or two (maybe their game against the Jets or the Cardinals, I'm taking suggestions if anyone has ideas) to get a better idea, but I think maybe Sheppard was the Bills' Jerry Hughes, which makes this trade very ironic.

He's not a great player, he's not a difference maker, but I thought he played with discipline, made plays that came his way, and didn't hurt his team. As a rotational inside backer in our hybrid front, he's a better fit for the Will position than anyone else we have. I could see him winning that starting spot, playing alongside Freeman at Mike. Conner would back up Sheppard, and Angerer would play in sub situations alongside Freeman. I figure Sheppard will play 50-60% of our defensive snaps.

JMO, but I think we got a decent player who improves our linebacker corps. Our biggest gap was at Will backer, and Sheppard ought to fit that role very nicely.

Some tremendous insight. I really like Sheppard and think the trade was a big upgrade considering the depth at outside linebacker versus inside linebacker.

Freeman isn't going anywhere but I think a trio of Sheppard/Angerer/Conner will be a great position battle in training camp. Remember the Colts lost Moise Fokou too, who played valuable snaps on passing situations last season.

  19. To continue that point, I did think Price looked pretty solid.

You would have to think one of those undrafted corners will challenge Vaughn/Gordy/Williams for the final corner spots.

I love what Teddy Williams gave the Colts from a pure speed standpoint and was a solid gunner when called upon.

Whether Price or Swanson or Malone make the roster will first depend on special teams play. They will likely be the fourth corner at best so special teams will be the most important aspect and then the occasional obviously passing down.

  20. Let's say Thomas and Thornton are the starters at guard.

How do you see the depth along the rest of the line?

Obviously Holmes and Satele are your centers. No idea on who will start yet.

You have maybe Sowell and Linkenbach as backup tackles?

Then some combination of Ijalana/McGlynn/Reitz at guard?

Again, not all of these guys will be on the 53-man roster strictly from a numbers standpoint but definitely some more depth up front compared to last year.

  21. I definitely think you will see the tandem of Thornton and Cherilus get the opening day starts along the right side of the line.

Hopefully the days of J.J. Watt blowing up the right side of the Colts offensive line are gone with those two double-teaming Watt.

As for the center position, I think Holmes will certainly challenge Satele for the starting job but as of now I think Samson will be the starter come Sept. 8.

The C/QB duo of the future is clearly Holmes and Luck. The question now is whether that begins in 2014 or 2013?

  22.  I'm pretty sure Chapman was never activated. After you come off PUP list (1st 6 games) , the player can practice and the team has 3 weeks to add the player. Indy did not activate Chapman. Harnish , I'm 90 % sure that he started on the 53 man roster and then with all the injuries , he was waived and the resigned to the practice squad. So if I'm right and I think I am , he actually was on the active roster. As far as what the rules actually are for players signed in 2013 and being allowed to attend this mini camp.. I don't know. I'm sure the Colts did what they could to include Harnish as they probably needed him to throw.

So if it's a question of a player being activated , Chapman would be eligible and Harnish not.

After looking back on it, yes that is correct.

Neither Harnish nor Chapman are participating in rookie minicamp.

The Colts singed a pair of quarterbacks, one from Arkansas Tech and another from Findlay.

Some first-year players that are participating include Robert Griffin, Shawn Loiseau (tryout), Davin Meggett, Jabin Sambrano and Monte Simmons,
