  1. Highly doubt it. Manning can't put his ego in check for the TEAM. I called EXACTLY how this game was going to go in another thread. Seattle openly, as have A LOT of other teams in previous games in his career, invited him to run the ball. Seattle consistently dropped 7 into coverage because they KNEW he wouldn't hand the ball off, but would end up trying to throw all over them and they feasted all over it. Manning did nothing but help dig them into a deeper hole with the consistent failed drives.

No, it wasn't all Manning's fault, but as hurt as their defense was, the worst thing that could happen was to have failed drive, after failed drive, and keep putting that defense back on the field.

Seattle and San Fran don't need a QB like that to win, obviously. Manning would have probably done more harm to those two teams than help them. Defenses know he can't just sit back and let the game come to him. Everything has to be made so much more difficult.

    Just my opinion...

Actually a failed drive is not that big a deal if it ends up with a punt. Instead Manning tossed the ball into the opponent's hands and gave up a TD or gave the defense short field. They tried to run a little bit but found Seattle with 7-men front was not as soft as Patriots, so they gave up. But as good as Seattle's front 7, their secondary is even better. Teams have beaten Seattle by committing to the run, while Manning simply wanted to carry the load. Poor decision and a disastrous game mostly on him.

  2. The big issue to me....is teams that played Seattle a second time...VASTLY IMPROVED in those games. NO, SF,ARI all came close to winning or did win games after facing Seattle a second time. I agree Denver's team was not ready for the speed and physical nature and it showed...but given playng them once before or playing a couple teams like them and SF it is much easier to prepare for that type of game. There really isn't a team in the AFC that plays that style of football...and none in the NFC East that Denver played against. Had they played a Carolina, SF, SEA, ARI, STL team they would have had a much better gauge for the level that defense was coming to play. To say they couldn't match it is ridiculous....that is like saying NO a finese team couldn't..but they played very well and was a couple plays from winning that playoff game. Honestly I don't think Denver was ready for the crowd noise and communication issues and then they didn't ratchet up their game speed. We've seen them do it before but they came out flat...hard to imagine but they did...it was a poor effort that just snowballed...much like SF and NO first games playing Seattle....but you guys adjusted...and Denver could too. Play your worst game against a great team...your going to get rolled...the difference isn't as big as the score...but that is what happens in the nfl...like Tom said...the margin for error is small...and its easy to see how a game can get away from you...especially on this stage.

Great point. NFL teams are more evenly matched and can adjust and come back strong even after a huge blowout.

One common thing the three teams did when the came back was they all emphasized the running game. Even for Saints with Brees an elite QB, they maintained a near 50-50 passing to running ratio when they were down by 16 points, and they managed to come back for a game tying drive at the end. This was the blueprint for beating Seattle, which Denver strangely didn't even consider.

  3. I am completely with you on this. Typical of our media that is the prisoner of the moment. They seem to forget that if Kaepernick puts a little more air under that pass in the corner of the end zone then the niners are in the SB and Seattle goes home with Sherman as the goat.

Here in Boston some of the media are actually saying the Pats would be better off right now with Carroll. :wall:   They seem to forget that when he was here he ruined a SB caliber team in just three short seasons ... and left the mess to Belichick who turned it into a dynasty just four years later.

If there is such a drastic turnaround, what exactly has Carroll changed in these years? If not I'd start to suspect they are using lots of PED at Seattle.

  4. Oh totally agree. One SB does not make them anything more than that. I was just pointing out I get a little frustrated in BB not allowing players some creativity on their own.  But it's hard to argue with his record. I suppose it's also what you have for talent on the squad. Obviously an average player is better of doing his assignment only.I guess..

BB's problem is he has not had a group of players with this level of talent for almost a decade. When they had that great defense they were pretty creative and they trashed Peyton Manning every year until that group of defense got decomposed for FA and retirement.

  5. Is Manning thinking...Hmmm, maybe I should have heard Pete Carroll's recruitment speech straight out 1st as a free agent before I said no to Seattle straight out?

I was pondering that thought last night as he held his post game press conference. I'm not piling on just brainstorming outloud. RW wasn't asked to carry the load last night.

Don't you think Manning actually enjoys carrying the load? Going to Seattle or SF he's probably having another ring by now, but more than just winning I think he likes to win in his own way, which is not always welcomed everywhere especially for coach with strong personality. Don't you think Mike McCoy going to San Diego also wants to prove sth.?

I think they just talked about the recruiting, but both sides knew it was not serious. Remember Carroll said when he received Manning's call (isn't it strange for the interviewee to be called?) he was asked by Manning what plan Seahawks had for him and Carroll didn't know at the point.

  6. I don't know man, I thought the "gap" you speak of was pretty darn wide.  ;)

A team like Denver, as they're currently built, is probably not going to win out over a team like Seattle or San Francisco. Just my opinion anyway. The high-flying offenses almost always get grounded one way or another.

I don't know, but Colts blew SF out at SF and beat Seattle at home, and Pats blew out Colts, while Pats then got blown out by Denver just one week later. The disparity between NFL teams is smaller than it looks like, sometimes it is about match up, sometimes it is about game flows. And there are always injury issues. Any given Sunday.

Looks like Denver will play Seattle to open the season. Will be a long preparation.

  7. Peyton wants the attention and he gets it.  He's a great QB, one of the best.  But Peyton wants all the credit for the teams success.  All the running up behind the center to point out some player on the other line of scrimmage is all about getting the attention.  He keeps O linemen holding in 3 point stances while he does all this, which is not pleasant if you're a 300lb player.  QB's on other teams will do something similar maybe twice a game, and if a CB is obviously planning to rush the QB, the RB is just shifted to the other side of the QB.  You may not agree, and that's OK.  Take a shot at me if you will, that's OK.  But this is my opinion and I'm entitled to it.

The year the Colts won the SB, MJD ran for what, 175 yds on our run D.  Our run D was consistently poor and our running game was just good enough to keep the other D honest.  Then we get to the SB and there is a complete turnaround.  We stopped the Bear running game, which no one expected.  Edge and 'Nique, (Dominick Rhodes) ran all over the Bear D.  Peyton was not the star of that Super Bowl, Edge and Nique were.

Not Edge, it was Addai. And I agree that year Colts had a better team and they played like a team. Manning was not the superstar in that Super Bowl run. And luckily Chargers got knocked out.

  8. This was sort of like the 1980s and early 1990s. In those days the conference championship games were definitely more competitive than the Super Bowls. 49ers, Giants, Cowboys, etc-etc... then the AFC would decide which sacrificial lamb it would send to the game!

I am not ruling Manning out yet. Next year when he plays NFC west he will have possessed experience on their toughness and I bet Broncos will learn a lot from the lost game.

Again the score was humiliating but the gap may be smaller than expected.

  9. The entire AFC doesn't have this kind of muscle, speed, and mentality. Colts may be the closest before too many injuries so they managed to beat both of them as well as Broncos. Next year will be interesting as Manning will have a chance to meet the entire NFC west.

  10. a pack of starving hyenas... Great analogy! Which reminds me of PED...

I don't think what the media talks about has anything to do with what happens in the game. That game last night, if you even want to call it that, was about the Broncos not performing well, and the Seahawks pouncing on every opportunity they were given, like a pack of starving hyenas. It wasn't about Manning's legacy or how he's been viewed since he came into the league, it wasn't about his MVPs or records, and it wasn't about where he was drafted.

Just give the Seahawks credit for an amazing performance.

  11. I think his legacy will have to be determined after years and stand the test of ... PED, which I doubt they can.

I will not be surprise if after a couple of years Seahawks are tied with PED scandal and maybe returning a couple of trophies. Yes they are good enough to win at least one more but then all the flashlights will be on them. They are strong and quick on the field but not human-strong. Then Manning gets his ring in his retirement.

we need to wait a few years with Carroll....

...he has to stand the test of time..

  12. the nfl is gonna miss guys like peyton and brady when their done in a couple of years, but the future of the qb position is very bright with guys like luck wilson rg3 newton kaep tannerhill dalton. rivalries are already ensuing with wilson and kaep. we've already seen luck vs tannerhill a couple of times. rg3 vs wilson already played in the playoffs. we saw rg3 vs newton last year. luck vs rg3 finally happens for real next season.  which rivalry do you see being the biggest and what super bowl matchup between these young signal callers would be the best

Well said. Yesterday showed the twilight of Manning's generation, as well as the sub-generation of Eli, Rivers, Big Ben, Romo, and even Brees and Rodgers.

The new generation will take over, but there is one question: They are all "benefitting" from the new CBA rule which allows them to have a better team, although they are earning less individually. What is going to happen when they start the 2nd contract?

  13. No...I'm in SoCal...65 and sunny! :)

But you raise a good point and it kind of syncs with what GOPATS was saying. Manning is so good as an "OC on the field" that there may not be the check and balance among the coaching staff that may be needed against playoff opposition.

What makes that even worse is that during the span of Manning's career, defenses have steadily adapted to more mobile, and now in some cases, free-wheeling QBs....leaving guys like Manning and Brady quite vulnerable if there are any deficiencies in their pass protection against those playoff defenses. Yesterday their timing was all fouled up.

In game-planning against Manning a defense can absolutely count on one thing without fail....Peyton will NOT beat them or move the chains with his legs. In the past that wasn't such a liability....these days, and at this point in a long career, it is.

Yes the mechanism of Manning's no-huddle offense pretty much determines it will be him VS the opposing defense. As he has been improving on the understanding of the game, his physical attributes are declining, while the defense are refreshing and improving all the time.

The dilemma is, for Manning and Brady type of pocket passers, the no-huddle puzzle game is the only mechanism that allows them to beat the opposing defense albeit their lack of athleticism. They are tall but slow, and not strong enough to withstand hit and interruption. These can be overcome in regular season but not in the postseason against very good teams.

  14. What I am constantly seeing is that they are letting PI and holding go on a bit more in the playoffs than in the regular season consistently even with pass friendly rules across the league.

So, a team like the Broncos benefit from those rules during the regular season and since they don't have much of a plan B with their running game and D, the passing efficiency comes crashing down when the secondary is allowed to hold and mug more.  Instead of saving it for the playoffs, why not call the regular season with such similar rules too with consistency?

I wont blame the refs since it was pretty obvious in the entire playoff they let them play as they did not want to look like people sending some teams home. But Denver pretty much gave up the running game completely since they trailed 0-8, which against any decent defense would not work. It sounds crazy but playing Seattle you need to keep running even when you are going nowhere. Punt whenever you have to. All three teams beating them this yr did this.

  15. Good post Tony.

The unfortunate part is that no one more than Peyton himself understands the acutely delicate balance between the team concept and the built-in credit/blame paradox that QBs live with. He's happy and able to shoulder the responsibility and provide the leadership and work ethic example that NFL QBs are expected to provide....but being the team sport that it is....he knows full well that 10 other offensive team mates and 52 other roster spots plus the coaches HAVE to do their jobs to win a football game, whether its preseason or the Super Bowl.

He knows this....its the media looking for a story and a whole lot of whipped-up fans who don't always get it.

I said in a post the other day that in almost every press conference he gives, he answers football questions about himself with the words "we", "us" and "team"....with the emphasis on TEAM.

And as GOPATS said...the regular season accolades do him no favors and probably fire up the opposition more than anything....especially a collection of nasty attitude-types like the Seahawks.

As much as he emphasizes team, it is not going to be a team as far as he is the actual OC on the field although he generally gets it done in the regular season.

It is not a coincidence that all teams Manning is on keeps declining on other phases. Before Manning this Broncos team was good enough to take NFL's biggest liability at QB to a playoff win. Now they are not very different from the old Colts. Maybe people are lazy and tend to rely on a "leader" when there is one.

BTW are you in PA? Me too and it is snowing heavily here.

  16. Even with Rodgers, the Packers' defense played well during that run. Same for Brees and the Saints, Brady and the Patriots' titles, and Manning's championship in '06, all backed by strong defense.

I don't think Manning would be in such a harsh spotlight right now if Denver had made it closer or at least put up more than one TD. The one-sidedness of this loss is going to be the talking point for the Skip Bayless-es and other media donkeys of the world.

The score was deceiving. The defense was constantly put into a bad spot due to turnovers and there were many points directly from INTs. The Denver team were not that bad, but they never got a chance to fight like a team largely due to Manning not being patient. Against Seahawks it is OK to slow the game down and it will take a lot of wrestling to win the game.

BTW Seattle players always played stronger and more excited than others all the time, especially yesterday. Don't know if they indeed had PED.
