  1. Kalil is a tremendous talent, but the Colts' chances of winning does not improve by drafting Kalil.

The Colts got two tackles in 2011, and Castonzo has done well when healthy. He will develop during this season and over the course of next years OTAs and training camp and be a quality blind side protector.

The Colts should definitely add an OG in the 2nd or 3rd round. That will improve the line, and we do not "waste" a top pick on a tackle - a position where the Colts already has talented players. Keep playing Castonzo at LT, Ijalana will eventually start at RT next season, and add a natural OG in the draft. No shuffling around, but a better O-line.

  2. I don't think Luck's value is going to drop. But he might get competition from Barkley, and as Doogan says, it's not Luck or Bust.

The interesting thing could be if Barkley decided to stay a Trojan for his senior year. He's a true junior, and right now a bit in the shadow of Andrew Luck. If he feels that USC can compete for a national championsship next year he could possibly decide to stay and then be in strong contention for the 1st overall pick in 2013.

That would be an interesting development for the Colts, as the interest in Luck would increase.

  3. I don't know how good Barret Jones is, but the guy I want is Kelechi Osemele, OT/OG Iowa State. He is a massive road grader is who athletic for his size. He plays LT in college, but he played G before he was switched to LT. I think he would be a great fit at RG for us and he will probably be available in the top of the 2nd round.

Another guy I am interested about is Cordy Glenn, even though he is from UGA.

    I agree.

Barrett Jones is a really good prospect too though. The interesting thing about him is that he moves to LT or RT depending on the play. He usually lines up as LT for Alabama, which proves he has some pass protection skills. He then moves to RT if they have a running play going right - and he really opens space for Richardson and Lacy. Very versatile, good pass protector and a mauler in the run game!

  4. Alshon Jeffery and Justin Blackmon probably won't reach the 8th pick, and Trent Richardson could be gone too. Also, don't tell me which teams will be happy with a different player instead because you don't know that.

Also, the #2 overall pick worth more than their 2 first rounders. This is a trade value chart for the NFL draft: http://walterfootbal.../draftchart.php

You are of course entitled to your opinion.

But I will though hold onto my statement that Cleveland would not move to the #2 spot. Because the top 3 could easily be Luck, Barkley and Kalil. So as I said, more like the #4 and after. Whether it will be Richardson, Blackmon or Jeffrey...

  5. Don't be so short sighted, there are positions in the NFL other than quarterback. I guess I should have mentioned that Cleveland is in need of a top WR because Colt McCoy needs more weapons, they could also go DE in their new 4-3 front this year. There will be competition for the Browns from teams who want to get a quarterback such as Mat Barkley or Landry Jones #2 overall.

Not being short sighted, but realistic. The Browns are not giving up their two 1st rounders to get to the #2 spot. They'll be happy with either Trent Richardson, Justin Blackmon or Alshon Jeffery, so they are not going to invest heavily to get one of them. Even if they were, they wouldn't move to #2, but more like #4 or #5. They might even have a shot at getting Trent Richardson with their own 1st and Michael Floyd with the other.

  6. @MKDK- It seems to me like you have been reading what I post on here because we sure do have similar thought processes. If we trade with Miami, in addition to draft picks, I think the Colts can get Vonte Davis, allowing them to wait for Janoris Jenkins or Alfonzo Denard in the late first round/ early second. Idonije would come cheap and he is a good overall defensive end, against both the pass and run, in a post I did a month ago I mentioned the exact same scenario. I think we should either draft Barron or pursue Larron Landry, and we need some impact NT, I love Dontari Poe, but there is no way he is available past the second/ early third round. I think you should take a look at the cbs sports big board, some of your names, which I like and have in my mocks are gone by the second round. And I wanted Briggs to be traded here when he complained about his contract, Colts need another impact linebacker!

Sorry to dissappiont you, but I haven't read your posts - you sound like a reasonable guy though ;) These are all my own views.

If we trade from #1 to #2, it would be great to get Vontae Davis in a trade. The Colts desperately need help at corner. The #2 spot isn't a whole lot worse/better than #1 for the Colts, however they would get additional picks. I think in this scenario (drafting in the #2 spot and not being able to trade back) I would take Matt Barkley (and as said, hopefully get Vontae Davis in the trade). That's the best value and he's not that much off Andrew Luck.

I have seen Barron projected anywhere from top 2nd round to mid 3rd round, so the 1st pick in the 3rd round isn't out of order when mocking this early.

For Poe i haven't seen him projected higher than the 3rd (and most places I've looked he's in the 4th), so again the top pick in the 4th round I would say is a legitimate guess. I'm really impressed by this guy! He's isn't out of shape as Terrence Cody, and he doesn't move like a 350 pound guy - and I'm not even one of those screaming for a big body guy. I just like Dontari Poe.

CBS - or NFL Draft Scout who provides the scouting - do not have projection for juniors as of yet.

I still think that the colts will have the #2 pick, not the number 1 pick after this season is over. ;) My trade scenario is to the Cleveland Browns because they have 2 first round picks, which is what we need if we want to get the 2 players I want. We trade the 2nd overall pick for the 8th, 20th, and 40th picks of Cleveland. The draft picks are as follows:

I seriously doubt that Cleveland will pursue a QB. As it is, there is absolutely no supporting cast for Colt McCoy and the conditions wouldn't be better for a new QB. So why in the world would Clevelan move up to the #2 spot? Don't get me wrong I would love to see us getting Claiborne and Thompson, but it's not going to happen.

  7. Who are you cutting?

    Gary Brackett

Possibly Melvin Bullitt and Jerry Hughes

What players are getting their contracts re-worked if any?

Dwight Freeney - FA in 2013, gives him a new contract with a signing bonus instead of the cap heavy 2012 salary.

What free agent players are you bringing back if any?

    Robert Mathis

    Pierre Garcon

Mike Pollak - If Saturday retires. Then Pollak plays center

    - Letting Reggie Wayne walk. Colts will receive a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick (not included in my draft)

What free agents are you pursuing if any?

CB Carlos Rogers - probably stays with Niners.

DT Aubrayo Franklin - got very little interest this off season. Could be a bargain in 2012 free agency

(Pursues DE Israel Idonije if the Colts can't retain Robert Mathis)

Who are you drafting and with what picks from the trade down scenario?

Trades the possible #1 overall pick. Washington, Seattle, and Miami are all going to have interest in it. All teams are going to draft within the top 7. Trades at least their respective 1st, 2nd and 3rd in 2012 for the 1st overall pick (plus additional picks in 2013).

Rd 1: WR Justin Blackmon OR CB Morris Claiborne

Rd 2: CB Alfonzo Dennard/Stephon Gilmore OR WR Dwight Jones

    Rd 2: OL Kelechi Osemele

    Rd 3: S Mark Barron

    Rd 3: WR Kendall Wright

    Rd 4: DT Dontari Poe

Might even trade further down in the 1st: If Cleveland drafts after Denver, they want to move ahead of them and select RB Trent Richardson and sends their 1st and 2nd to the Colts (their two 1st rounders is unrealistic I think). Denver could do the same.

    Rd 1: CB Morris Claiborne

    Rd 2: WR Dwight Jones

    Rd 2: LB D'onta Hightower

Rd 2: OL Kelechi Osemele OR S TJ McDonald

Rd 3: OL Cordy Glenn/Kevin Zeitler OR S Mark Barron

    Rd 3: WR Kendall Wright

    Rd 4: DT Dontari Poe

Trades our 2013 2nd round pick (will probably be low in the 2nd) for LB Lance Briggs if the Colts can work the cap and afford a new contract for Briggs.

  8. The Colts can do it if they want to.

The Colts are a healthy Peyton Manning, a new head coach or at least defensive coordinator, one good draft (2012, as we're drafting high. Could get multiple picks by trading back), and maybe just perhaps one free agent signing (not counting re-signings) away.

    Head coach candidate:

Perry Fewell - takes control of the defensive side of the ball

Steve Spagnoulo - ex-Giant DC coach too, doubt the Rams will move on though

    Defensive coordinator candidates:

Dennis Thurman - Jets DB coach, former Ravens employee

Mike Zimmer - question if whether he can be lured from Cincy

Dennis Allen - Saints DB coach, has worked under two really good DC in Gregg Williams and Wade Phillips

Mark Carrier - Ravens DB coach, former DL coach under Rex Ryan, could prefer 3-4 D (positive/negative?)

    Winston Moss - Packers LB coach/Assistant HC, 3-4 D?)

... and other guys as well.

I wouldn't mind keeping Clyde Christensen around. Let him, Jim Tressel and Peyton be the guys for the offense.

    Free agent signing:

CB Carlos Rogers - (close to) elite cover corner, not a playmaker. Has played lights out this year for 49ers. Was good for Redskins as well, just suffered from hands of stone, so didn't make plays. Has a couple of interceptions this year.

    - This free up a draft pick and gives a proven NFL player. Unfortunately there is no really intriguing players at D-tackle or safety with their contracts up.

    Re-sign:

    Robert Mathis

    Pierre Garcon

    - I'm prepared to let Reggie Wayne walk. Nobody questions how great Reggie has been, but he's a possesion guy now. He's chemistry and timing with Peyton are the big contribution and plus for Reggie, but is it enough to retain him at what could be a big salary? I doubt it. Manning still has Dallas Clark and Austin Collie who he connects with brilliantly. Garcon provides a constant deep threat and big play ability.

(other re-signings: Mike Pollak if Saturday retires. Pollak then moves to his natural position at center - Jacob Tamme, good special teamer, great depth - Ryan Diem if he can stay healthy and play well at guard (and has more left in the tank).

    Draft needs:

WR, DT, CB, S, OG/T, LB

  9. Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks are only real trading partners should the Colts have the 1st overall:

    Miami:

Henne's contract is up after this season, and Miami wants to move on. Not afraid to spend shown by trading for Brandon Marshall and giving big contracts to the likes of Karlos Dansby, Kevin Burnett and franchise tagging Paul Soliai.

Will "compete" for the 1st overall pick, and if they don't get it, they will certainly be picking within the top 5.

    Draft picks 2012: Top 5

    Players of interesst: Vontae Davis

Notes: Are not beating out the Patriots in 2012 and play offs would be a challenge in the AFC with Ravens/Steelers, Colts/Texans, Patriots/Jets, Chargers/Raiders. So, a possible 1st rounder in 2013 would probably be within the first 20.

    Gives up for #1: 1st 2012, 2rd 2012, 1st 2013

    Seattle:

Basically threw away this season by not getting a better QB. Tarvaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst are caretakers at best (still wonder why they traded for Whitehurst?). Question is whether Pete Carroll will go for Luck rather than Barkley (or Jones), and that also depends on where Seattle ends up picking. Would probably be within top 6.

    Draft picks 2012: Top 6

Players of interest: Sidney Rice maybe? Earl Thomas (hot happening though)?

Notes: No players of realistic intereset really. In 2013 they could compete in the NFC West, so picks in 2013 could be after the first 20.

    Gives up: 1st 2012, 2nd 2012, 1st 2013, 3rd 2013

    Denver:

Are parting with Orton after his season surely. A lot depends on Tebow's progress this year, but they could go after a QB - Or sit at their spot and John Fox will be praying he can get Trent Richardson.

    Draft picks 2012: Top 10

Players of interest: Could be Quinton Carter - would be good depth and possible starter for the Colts, and wouldn't be such a caliber player that the Colts would have to "surrender" a high draft pick in a trade.

Notes: Denver has multiple needs, so might be reluctant to go to #1. If they want a QB they could go for either Barkley or Jones in the 1st, or Foles or Cousins in the 2nd.

    Kansas City:

Cassel is not taking them to the play offs again. But Cassel does still have a long contract, so everything depends if they hold onto him.

    Washington:

WILL need a QB. Their picks will be within the top 15, but would be a long way up to the #1, so would have to give up a lot!

St. Louis: Certainly not making a big move for Luck!

Minnesota: Will stick with Ponder for at least this season and next.

Jacksonville: Traded up for Gabbert. Will stick with him.

(To a previous post: There's a difference in taking a QB in the top 12, and taking one in the 2nd round)

Arizona: Won't realize that Kolb's huge mistake just yet, and don't have their 2nd rounder to trade up with. Gave Kolb a big contract as well. Not happening.

Cleveland: Sticks with McCoy, gives him a receiver in 2012, so not going for 1st overall obviously.

#1 overall er trade away then?

Either way the Colts can't really go wrong. If Luck is drafted 1st overall, the Colts have a QB for the next 15 years probably. Trade down and get multiple picks and strengthen the team, get a (developmental) QB in the 2012 2nd or 3 rd round (Foles/Cousins/Tannehill) to sit behind Peyton.

If the Colts trade the 1st overall away, Quinton Coples or Justin Blackmon/Alshon Jeffery would be the best possibilities. Matt Kalil is going to be great (probably), but it doesn't really help the Colts more so than having Castonzo and Ijalana.

  10. Mark Barron is one of my absolute favourites as well!

Donta Hightower is another - that Crimson Tide defence is pretty darn good.

Even though I can't imagine Barron being available in the top of the 3rd round. But then again, his co-safety Robert Lester seems be higher valued by most draft scout sites. Wouldn't mind picking Barron in the 2nd though. He catches my eye every time I watch Alabama play.

  11. That's funny you mentioned Gilmore...I didn't know who he was, but I have been watching South Carolina's games to watch primarily Jeffrey, Kirkpatrick and Melvin Ingram. Understandably, teams don't go after Kirkpatrick very much so Gilmore probably gets picked on more. The first game of theirs I watched I remember thinking that the "other CB" looked like he was pretty good too but I didn't know his name. I've been watching so many games I forgot about him but it makes sense now. So yeah he did look good and playing opposite Kirkpatrick might cause him to get lost in the shuffle a little bit.

I'll be sure to keep an eye on Gilmore as well as I continue watching SCAR's games (how can you not like a team who's team abbreviation is SCAR? <img src='http://forums.colts.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/31hysterical.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='lol' />)

No wonder you don't see the QB go much after Dre Kirkpatrick when watching South Carolina - he's with Alabama.

Depending on where the Colts end up picking in the 2012 draft, I wouldn't mind picking Kirkpatrick in the 1st round. For me, right now, it's between Luck, Kirkpatrick and Matt Kalil. If the Colts don't go CB in the 1st, the likes of Claiborne or Gilmore would be the best possibilities in the 2nd - if they are even available at the top of the 2nd round. Good thing is that there's plenty of talent at the CB-position with Alfonzo Dennard and Jayron Hosley as other prospects.

  12. So let's see what this team really can do without Peyton. Defense, offensive line and running game really has to step up!

I believe we get by. I don't think the Texans will blow us out, but it will be more than a difficult game. Luckily the schedule isn't too bad to begin with, and even without Peyton the Colts could potentially be something like 4-2 after week 6.

STEP UP TEAM! AND GET WELL SOON, PEYTON!

  13. but he has been a beast at stopping the run this pre-season along with Johnson. Even without Harris I am feeling pretty good about our DT spot going into the season. We'll see how it works out.

Johnson and Moala was solid in the final games against Titans (x2), Jaguars and Raiders last season too.

I'm a bit disappointed that Tommie Harris didn't stay on the team, but I guess he was cut for a reason.

But the positive of that is, that Drake Nevis will se the field plenty. Nevis really catched my eye for LSU in 2010 college football season, and he stood out everytime I watched LSU Tigers. I was thrilled when the Colts drafted him!!!

  14. I'll be the first to pick the Bills then. Kansas City Chiefs are gonna SUCK this year.
