  1. First thought, if you're saying we're only going to have roughly 250k on the cap after all is said and done, then it's a complete non-starter.

All teams have millions left. You need it for post-draft free agents and the other free agents that you sign during the course of the season.

Teams typically leave about 5-10 million for all of that.

As for the players, I think you'll have to flip-flop Robinson and take him in R4 and try for Jones in R5 and be very lucky if either would be available there....

Oh, and just noticed.... no RB from this deep and talented RB draft class? I don't think that happens.

Like I have said I think we will have to Make move or two before we go ahead with Knighton. And I Would be perfectly fine with grabbing a Rb instead of Greenberry. Kind of an oversight on my part. maybe I'm just not ready to give up on Ballard yet.

  2. Colts Offseason/ Mock 2015 2.0

With the first day and a half of free agency behind us, we now have a better look at what are draft strategy may be. As it stands we do not have much cap space left (sitting at around 10M based on speculated terms with Langford, Adams and AJ). We still have a few players that can be dropped to give us enough space to make a run at a player or two.

    Remaining Cap ~10M

    Cuts

    Thomas                     - Saves 3.2m

    Richardson                - Saves 3.1m

    Cribbs                        -Saves .9M

    Projected Cap – 16.2M

    Resign

    Adams                                                -2yrs 5M Cap Hit 2.5M RESIGNED 2YRS (2015 ~2m)

    Remaining Cap                14.2M

    Free Agents

    Terrance Knighton – 4 yrs – 30M – 2015 Cap hit 7M

    Kendrick Lewis – 2 yrs – 4M – 2015 Cap Hit 2M

    Remaining Cap                 5.2M

    Draft

1—Jordan Phillips – DT – We need to beef up our D line, and this guy will do the trick nicely. If we do not secure Knighton, this pick becomes almost a must for us.  Cap 1.32M

Previous Pick Paul Dawson – ILB

2- Cody Prewitt – FS- I think he may be gone by now, but if by some chance he is, this is the pick we need to make. He would give our back end a playmaker that can rotate in with Kendricks and Adams. Cap .65M     Previous Pick - Cody Prewitt – FS

3- Henry Anderson – DT/DE – Can play multiple positions along the line. He has surprising quickness for a player of his size. He is our replacement for Redding in the D line rotation. This pick completes our D-Line (Jones, Phillips, Knighton starting with Langford and Anderson able to fill in along the line) Cap .6M   Previous Pick Mike Davis – RB

4- Taiwan Jones – ILB – With our D line solid, we need to work on getting a thumper at ILB to clean up what the D Line gives up. Jones is a tackling machine that will help ensure we never get run over again. Cap .55M   Previous Pick Henry Anderson – DT/DE

5-Corey Robinson – OT – A decent looking run blocker to serve as insurance in case Cherilus doesn’t make it back 100%. Could use a little work in the pass protection area, but if we aren’t forced to start him right away he could be a solid RT down the line.   Cap .48M

Previous Pick Deontay Greenberry – WR

6- Cam Thomas – CB – Physical Corner. Great in the run game. Not a polished prospect, but learning from our solid group of CBs he could be a solid contributor down the road. Cap .46M

Previous Pick Cam Thomas – CB

6- Deontay Greenberry – WR –His snub from the combine hurts his draft stock. His loss is our gain (and eventually his gain). He can learn behind Dre and TY. At this point in the draft his suspect route running and drops are worth the risk. He may not even make the roster based on the talent we already have, but is a possible candidate for the PS. Cap .46M

Previous Pick Blake Sims – QB

7-  Tevin McDonald – FS- A flyer on a player with some upside. Safety is a position of need, and we would only have Lewis and Adams for two seasons. McDonald could possibly be groomed as one of the replacements. Cap .45M

Previous Pick Brett Boyko – OT

Cap After Draft Picks – .23M

While this set up leaves us with a pretty solid team, after factoring in what Adams will make, it will leave us with no cap space should something happen during the season. If we absolutely needed the cap we would have to look into cutting players like Walden or Lance Louis. Other options might arise such as Mathis or Cherilus if their injuries are too much for them to come back healthy (these two players could also be restructured to give us some breathing room). The alternative to this would be to not sign Knighton and go after a smaller name Defensive Lineman to join the rotation with Anderson and Langford.

    Thoughts?

  3. McPhee is just as good an edge aetter as Walden whilst being an upgrade in pass rush.

I Am weary about pulling the trigger on McPhee. Part time player being paid to be a full time starter, not sure if he can make that next step. Also not sold on his pass rush skills. His only sacks came against terrible o lines (IND, ATL, CLE, JAX, TB) I think for the money he wants we are better off going for a proven commodity.

  4. No he wouldn't. He'd be in man and zone coverage 50%+ of the time. Even more if we used him purely in a nickel role.

And when he is asked to come to the line of scrimmage, it would be as an A-gap blitzer, where the LB is supposed to stay as clean as he can to get in the backfield. Which is one of Dawson's strengths.

Wish I could find the source but there was a scouting report saying almost exactly this. That he would be a good nickel ilb and even an everydown wilb due to his coverage ability and ability to read a play.

  5. I do like the thought of bringing in Moore from Denver. Dan Williams is a good piece for the d-line (although I personally would rather have Knighton). Also love the addition of Franklin, as he can swing out to RT of we needed him to. My problem is relying on sub par Rbs. I think we need someone to get some pressure off luck every once in awhile.

  6. All this debate is for nil. One thing we have learned from Grigson is he beats to his own drum. With every player he may sign before the draft changes every pick like the two CFL players just signed. I understand it's the off season and there is not a lot to be discussed but all this effort is just that. With every mock draft I have looked at they are all different. I would be willing to bet that Grigson will go totally different than what most feel he should.

Absolutely It will be different. we haven't even hit the combine yet, which will drastically change rankings. This is simply a starting point for me to build on as time goes.

Mostly we are just bored with the offseason and looking for reasons to argue with one another :P

  7. In this scenario we need to resign toler or sign a good fa. Also this leaves us with the same o line we had last year outside a 7th round tackle. My dream off season for our o line would be to pick up 2 top guards and move mewhort to rt and cut cherilus.

I have faith in who we have on the line, at least enough to give them one more season to try and progress. We have Thornton and John both coming back from injury, as well signing heenan from the CFL, who with a little coaching could be a starter for us. I wouldn't mind adding in a bit more competition if we can swing it though. Could be a few udfas that look promising. Although all of this assumes cherilus comes back 100%. If he has any sort of set back then we would need to rethink priorities.

  8. Yeah Im not a fan of drafting a QB at all

The way I see it we can follow two paths in regards to our backup qb situation.

The first is our usual plan, which leaves us one injury away from 2-14, or we can be proactive and take a chance on a high upside player late in the draft that could be a decent backup that may even be able to get us a return via a trade down the road. The Patriots have got away with it with both Cassel and Mallett, essentially renting them as backups and then trading them away. I am not saying I think we can get a 2ND round pick for Sims down the road, but we may be able to get a 6th or 7th rounder, essentially getting our initial investment back.

  9. Colts Offseason/ Mock 2015 1.0

Alright Gents! After lurking around these boards for the last few years, I have finally decided to roll up my sleeves and start contributing. That being said, I present my first ever offseason/draft mock!!! With the Combine not even started up yet, these projections will wildly change, but I think this is a good starting point. I look for forward to your feedback on this (keep in mind I have never done this before). All of these cap numbers are figured using the overthecap.com software, as well as a few salary projections from other mock drafts, both on and off our boards.

    Thomas                     - Saves 3.2m

    Phillips                       - Saves 2.65m

    Cribbs                        - Saves  .97m

    Projected Cap – 44.6M

    Resign

    Hasselbeck (if he doesn’t retire) – 1yr 2.5M Cap Hit 2.5M

    Wayne (if he doesn’t retire)          - 1yr 3M Cap Hit 3M

    Adams                                                -2yrs 5M Cap Hit 2.5M

    Studebaker                                        -3yrs 2.6M Cap Hit .87M

    Butler                                                 -3yrs 10M Cap Hit 3.5M

    Brown                                                -3yrs 6M Cap Hit 2M

    Reitz                                                   -2yrs 3.75M Cap Hit 1.5M

Shipley                                               -1yr 1.33m (Original Round Tender)

Pendleton                                          -1yr 1.33m (Original Round Tender)

Overton                                             -1yr 1.33m (Original Round Tender)

    Nixon                                                 -1yr .585M (ERFA Tender)

    Herron                                               -1yr .585M (ERFA Tender)

    Adongo                                              -1yr .585M (ERFA Tender)

Freeman                                            -1yr 2.88M (First Round Tender)

    Remaining Cap                 20.1M

    Free Agents

    Terrance Knighton – 4 yrs – 21M – 2014 Cap hit 5M

    Shane Vereen – 2 yrs – 7M – 2014 Cap Hit 3.5M

In the event Wayne Retires – Cecil Shorts – 2yrs – 5M Cap Hit 2.5M

In the event Hasselbeck Retires - Matt Moore - 1 yr - 2M

    Remaining Cap                 11.6M

    Draft

1-Paul Dawson – ILB – With half of our ILBs having run ins with the law in recent months, it wouldn’t hurt to bring in some new blood. Dawson brings a playmaking aspect to our middle that we haven’t had in awhile. Cap 1.32M

2- Cody Prewitt – FS- I think he may be gone by now, but if by some chance he is, this is the pick we need to make. He would give our back end a playmaker. Cap .65M

3- Mike Davis – RB – He is a hard-nosed runner who would give our O line a tough RB to rally around. Makes quick cuts, doesn’t dance around and fights for extra yards. Also looks decent in the pass game, although he could use some practice pass blocking (but what college RB doesn’t need that).  Cap .6M

4- Henry Anderson – DT/DE – Can play multiple positions along the line. He has surprising quickness for a player of his size. He is our replacement for Redding in the D line rotation. Might not be around by this point. (Second Choice – Corey Crawford –DE) Cap .55M

5-Deontay Greenberry – WR – Tall Physical WR that will fight for the ball. Could use some work with route running and beating press coverage. Could turn into a gem.  Cap .48M

6- Cam Thomas – CB – Physical Corner. Great in the run game. Not a polished prospect, but learning from our solid group of CBs he could be a solid contributor down the road. Cap .46M

6- Blake Sims – QB – We need to get a backup for Luck eventually (especially if Hasselbeck does not come back). Sims is a raw talent, but given the right coaching he could be a solid player to have behind Luck. Cap .46M

7- Brett Boyko – OT – A last round flyer. Lacks the skills to be an elite talent, but hasn’t had a ton of experience in American Football (he was a Canadian DE). Needs some coaching and some confidence but the guy could be a depth player for us.  Mostly just want the Colts to take a chance on him because he is from my hometown of Saskatoon, SK, Canada. Cap .45M

Cap After Draft Picks – 6.7M

Not a big splash in FA for us this year if we go this route, but between the few key players we get along with our draft picks I think this will set us up with some solid pieces on both sides of the ball, as well as good rotational/backup players in case we get with that wretched injury bug we can’t seem to shake.

Let me know what you all think!! Can’t wait to hear your feedback!!

  10. All around good mock Superman. Well thought out and well put together!!!

The one question I have for this mock; If we had a shot at FS Cody Prewitt at our 2nd round pick (as unlikely as it is), do you think the Colts should pull the trigger on that and shore up our back end a bit as opposed to Jake Fisher, who may be better suited to a guard position anyways? This assumes that we may have to upgrade who we pick up for a FA RT.
