  1. you obviously have never seen him play

Playing in the PAC-10 is not the same as playing in the NFL. Heck, it's not the same as facing SEC defenses. Regardless of how good he is, amff is right, an overall #1 is not going to quietly sit on the bench for long. Do you want Luck or Peyton? Drafting Luck will signal the end of the PM-era and the end will come soon, not several years down the road.

  2. we need to use them wisely, all 7 of them. Matt Kalil should be our first pick, and maybe get Robert Griffin III ? :dunno:

If we draft a QB, I like the RG III idea. I think he could be similar to Josh Freeman with better accuracy. The Colts can move down and get multiple picks and pick up RG III. He could learn from Peyton for a season or two. You don't keep an overall #1 sitting on the sideline. If we get #1, trade down and let somebody else have Luck (as in Andrew).

  3. you'd be wrong, Painter was on the radio last week and talked about how the Peyton process works and Painter went out of his way to say Peyton doesn't call plays because that was the first question he was asked. In fact tonight they showed the phone and said Painter has to call Manning to talk to him not the other way around and Painter said Peyton isn't in his helmet because NFL rules the only guy who can talk to the QB in his helmet is the coach on the sideline and that is Christison.

I have nno idea if PM made the call, but he didn't have to talk to Painter, if he could communicate with Christianson.

  4. I agree with many of you guys, but at the same time no one really knows how Peyton will be health wise. If you have guys like Luck, Landry, Barkley coming out to the NFL this year (if they decide not to play their senior year) I think the Colts should snag one if they have a very high pick. All those guys are big, strong, and have nice arms, accuracy and seem smart. I think Manning could come back and play for 2-3 more years, but we have no way of knowing what his situation will be (Right now). Don't forget Aaron Rodgers was projected and even thought himself he might go high in the first round and didn't. Drafted in 2005 he didn't start until 2008 and I have confidence Manning will come back but not play for 4 years like many think. I personally think Manning will play for 2-3 years then perhaps have a job in the NFL as a coach, perhaps an OC.

The point is I think it would be better for the Colts to get a solid future prospect now and have plenty of time to be groomed by Manning, opposed to having a less talented pick to be with much less time to be groomed by Manning. I'm not saying guys like Moore wouldn't be bad, someone even mentioned Griffin out of Baylor would be nice or Foles out of Az. It would still take at-least a year for players to develop into top notch players regardless of any position. I think Drake Nevis will be a stud btw and I even have confidence Lefeged could develope into a great player - build alittle more muscle.

The Aaron Rogers example doesn't support your premise that the Colts should take a QB with an early First Round pick. Rogers lasted deep into the first round. I think an early 1st Rounder should not sit more than one season. With Luck being the consesus prize in this draft (the best QB prospect in a decade or more according to many), trade down and get multiple picks if the Colts get the first pick. You mentioned RG III from Baylor. He might be a good candidate to learn for a season or two under Peyton. I like Tyler Bray in the 2013 draft even better. Moreover, I think Luck will expect to start by the mid-point of his rookie season. I don't think Landry Jones will be a good NFL QB. I'm not sure he is a good college QB without the Oklahoma talent around him.

  5. I agree. Remodeling is a great word for it.

I do think the Colts desperately need to bring in a QB next year. I don't know why people would want to pass up on Luck, Landry or Barkley. All have potential to be very good NFL QBs. I feel confident that if the Colts have a chance to take any one of those guys they will.

Colts could still fulfill other needs in later rounds @ SS, CB, OL, maybe bring in a WR or through FA (pending on how much $ they have). We also have no idea how good some of these young players the Colts have are yet as well Thomas, Rucker, Lefeged @ SS.

Yes the Colts may want to find the potential QB of the future. The Colts will in all likelihood get a very early pick in the First Round. However, there are needs to be addressed now with that early pick. If PM comes back healthy I can't see picking a QB to carry a clipboard for several years.

If the Colts get the first pick (very possible), there are teams drooling over Luck, as I said if Peyton is back, using the first pick on a QB would be a waste. I think the wise move would be to see what that first pick is worth in multiple draft picks in a trade.

  6. What if we get the top pic an andrew luck decided not to enter the draft because he didnt want to sit behind peyton or he enters and his agent say he wont go to colts to sit whats plan b its bin plenty of times top picks have forced their hand

If Peyton is healthy, I don't think the Colts will use an early 1st Round pick on a QB.

  7. Brackett is also on season-ending IR, hence the signing.

What does this even mean? You do realize no conference produces more NFL players, right? No conference produces higher academia either, which means a lot of the kids are smart.

Edds and Angerer played together and were a RIDICULOUS tandem for Iowa. Edds actually has better movement in pass coverage than does Angerer, so I think this could give us a beastly corps if he pans out.

Oh, and for those wanting size? He's currently 6'4" 250+, with greater speed than most NFL TE's.

According to Answers.Com and Yahoo Answers, the SEC has produced the most NFL players. It's certainly a better football conference. The Big 10 is not that good. As far vas academics, I'm not sure how to judge that. With quality state schools like VA, UNC, and NC State as well as private schools like Duke, BC, and Miami, I expect maybe the ACC has the highest academic standards.

  8. Hate to see both of them end their seasons like this (and possibly their careers as Colts truth be told). That being said, I actually think it is a positive for the defense. The last two games, we have looked much more physical with Angerer in the middle, and, as I've said before, Bullitt is nothing more than a serviceable backup and excellent special teams contributor. In other words, Bullitt shouldn't be the starter unless he is filling in for someone injured, and it is time for Angerer to start playing the position we drafted him to play.

You may be correct, but it could be bad from a depth point-of-view. I like Angerer; let's pray he stays healthy. I hate it when you have to go to Walmart to pick up starters. Of course, Kurt Warner was bagging groceries, I think. So, who knows.

  9. Carolina already drafted Cam Newton.Wed have to be the worst in the league to get Luck. But if we are I think this would be a gift from heaven.Luck would also get the advantage of training under one of the best QBS of all time.A win-Win.Also if He gets injured again We got somebody ready to go.

You don't draft the overall #1 with the intent to let him carry a clipboard for more than 1 year, if at all. If you think Peyton doesn't have more than a year left then put Peyton up for trade if he is agreeable and let Luck learn the hard way like PM, Cam Newton, and many others.

  10. Are QB's really the main reason for success? All I hear is people talking about them and complaining about them. Not just Colts fans, but everyone. Most of the conversations are based on QB's. If you look at NFL history, it is clearly a team sport and defense is more important than a QB.

Now there are ton of teams that win and won with sub par QB's. Here is an example of Super Bowl winners. Just imagine how many teams made it into the playoffs with sub par QB's.

    Doug Williams

    Jeff Hostetler

    Mark Rypien

    Trent Dilfer

    Brad Johnson

I can put a few others on this list, but they are a little bit better than sub-par.

The point is just by looking at Super Bowl winners, there are hundreds of other sup-par QB's that went into the playoffs.

Stop dissing Collins, stop whining and moaning, stop crying. Blame the team effort. Collins didn't singlehandedly lose those games.

The Defense was atrocious in both games. Special teams even worse. We couldn't run the ball at Hou. Our DB's stink. Coaching hasn't been good either.

    QB's don't win games.

Those guys had good teams; the Colts are not a good team without Peyton. You are correct about team effort, but regardless of effort the talent is not there.

  11. If you were the Colts GM what would you do if the colts had the #1 overall draft pick?

Would you stay there and Draft Luck or trade down for more picks?BUT Staying there and

I being an outsider can see the benefits doing both, trading down you get more HIGH picks (and prbl 2 #1 next year or even this year plus more) to improve any weaknesses the colts have expecting Manning be back next yr and doing this MAY give him a better rounded team and a chance win another SB.

BUT staying there and drafting Luck makes sense as you do two things:

    1. Have a GOOD back-up behind Manning in case he cant go you remain competitive.

    2. Manning can groom Luck for 3 yrs ala Favre to rogers.. except Manning would actually help the kid

So what would you do in this WORSE case scenerio.. remembering you are getting the franchise back next year.

It depends on Peyton's health. If he appears to have some years left, I would definitely trade down and accumulate two or three draft picks. If Peyton is not healthy, I would probably keep the pick depending on the evaluation of Luck. It's possible Luck may not be the optimal #1 pick. Most teams would have taken Reggie Bush over Mario Williams.

I don't think Option 2 is viable. Three years is too long to keep an overall #1 sitting on the bench. I would let a later QB pick be the guy to be mentored by the GOAT. You are correct that Peyton, unlike Favre, would actually work with his understudy.

Keep an eye on current Tennessee QB, Tyler Bray. As a Vol fan, I would love to see the best Vol QB since Peyton take over for the great one.

  12. People would have called it "homerish optimism" if I'd said we were gonna go to the SB in '09. They would have said our Run D sucks, our running game sucks. "Embrace the Suckage" Just because some of us have a little optimism left in us doesn't mean we're stupid. It just means we've seen unbelievable things out of our team before and hope to see it again.

I'm not saying we're gonna make the playoffs but I think its annoying to listen to all the people who say we're gonna have the 1st draft pick after two games. To quote monty python, "it got better"! lol

Peyton was playing in 09; he's not now. It's not going to get better this year, but you can continue to hope.

  13. I am sitting on my couch watching the game. I can handle the ineffectiveness of our Colts offense. What is more than painful to watch is our defense and the same problems that have continued for years continue to exist. We can't get off the field on third down defensively. Jacob Lacey is consistently targeted and thus drives are extended. Josh Cribbs has attempted one return on a kickoff and he took it 53 yards. Tackling is etrocious. At what point does this supposed "pride" kick in defensively?

There are those who will continue to believe the Colts are a good team and can compete for a playoff spot. Maybe as the season progress they will realize that the Colts are a pathetic team that has been carried on the shoulders of a great QB. Players like Freeney and Mathis will occasionally make the great play, but neither can play the run. The small, weak, and not very fast receivers can't get separation, the Oline has been a mess for several years. It's going to be a very long season.

  14. if u want to add a TE who can throw there may not be one as good as he is...

You may be right in that Tebow should be playing a position other than QB. He's taking a bashing now, but he is a very good FB player, if not an NFL QB. I would like to see him at fullback. He has the size to lead block and the power and vision to get a tough yard or two, plus maybe we could throw in a fullback pass here or there.

  15. At least painter knows the system, collins holds on to the ball too long. At least painter will throw it away... I seriously over estimated the colts coaching staff... and thats not something i thought i would have ever said.... Painter?

If it's not Peyton, it doesn't make any difference. However, I think Collins gives the Colts a better chance than Painter. I think my house painter gives us a better chance than Painter. It boils down to executing a strong run game to win.

  16. Peyton doesnt make up our entire team, he is our Qb, Of course he is the master of our OFFENSE and gets us POINTS. Now we are without him for a few weeks so Defense has to step up, Special teams IMO have been our weakest point for a few years, and with cribbs bringing it back like someone said above its going to be tough.

If special teams and Dfence can step their game up from last week, collins gets the timing of receivers down then we should win. We are not horrible we just had a horrible game. It happens I am sure everyone one on here has experienced a horrrible game or something similar like the colts did last week. I think we will get more Turnovers this week and that should help. We need to just move the ball and last time I checked the browns D was nothing spectacular!

I have said it before and Ill say it again...Lets Rally behind our Colts, lets not run away with our tail between our legs. This is our team and I stand behind them till the end. Ill be attending this game and I am really excited to hopefully witness the first win of the 2011 :colts:

Peyton is not the whole team, but without him the team sucks.

  17. I like Alshon Jeffery if we are in the top 5 picks, he compares to Brandon Marshall and we need to think about a different WR for the future without Peyton too, a bigger red zone target like Stafford has with Calvin Johnson. Alshon is hard to jam, schools most CBs and has good hands too.

If we are picking later (about 10-15), I would not mind having Manti Teo, MLB, from Notre Dame. Yes, you heard me, we need good LBs. Angerer and Brackett were both getting man handled, it is time to get some beef in the front 7. I would have said Jerel Worthy, DT, of Michigan State but we have invested in Moala and Nevis at the UT position unless Jerel Worthy can play the nose tackle in a 4-3.

You are so right about the "big red zone" target. This has been a problem when we get those 1st and goal situations. With no run game and small, not very strong, receivers, we have failed too often.

  18. Take into consideration, Kerry Collins hasnt been with this team for a full month yet, and being able to go out there and deliver a win is asking alot out of a new player that is aging and possibly doesnt have the timing down with the recievers...This is not the end of the colts. I mean you have 2 teams going head to head someone has to lose...unfortunately we lost in a bad way( giving up the ball, and lack of D for the first half). Just look at the saints, steelers, and the falcons...All playoff teams that also got stomped today...its just week 1 guys so lets put our big boy pants on and rally behind this team stop crying the season is over when we have 15 weeks left and a chance to get peyton back into the line up before this seasons over.

The Saints didn't come close to "getting stomped."

  19. From Will Carrol at SI.com:

Hearing Gonzalez and Collie out for Week 1. Gonzolez not expected to practice this week. #colts

( at first this quote had both not practicing but clarified later below )

Collie's injury is a foot and not related to concussions. ( wasn't iut the knee this offsesaon after preseason game 1 )

it will have been a month since Gonzo has practiced.

Will sent out this little update a few minutes ago:

Clarify: Meant Gonzalez will not practice. My error conflating Collie in there, tho he's very iffy to play.

Phil Richards wrote that Gonzo expects to play against Houston.,

( gonzo also expected to play in last preseason game he himself had said )

In other roster-related news, the Colts have apparently reached an injury settlement with Chad Spann. The team has released him, and he is a free agent.

    .

STAMPEDE BLUE ARTICLE, quotes are from outside sources though

    My link

Collie, our best receiver, is a huge loss. Gonzo out is business as usual--no big deal.
