  1. That's true, but a good offensive line isn't quite a mythical being just yet. There are plenty of teams that get really good offensive line play consistently, and they are able to plug guys in when there are injuries and not miss a beat. So it doesn't quite make me feel better than our line isn't the worst in the league. We still have a long way to go.

i don't disagree. i just think that given all the injuries up front that things aren't nearly as bad as they could have been. i'm optimistic about what the first 5 can do once all are healthy.

  2. Justice is a free agent. He hasn't been awful, but he hasn't really done anything that makes me think he'll be a priority re-signing either. McGlynn has another year on his deal, so I'm sure he'll be back for camp. I don't think Satele has been a disappointment. Between his injury status and the poor guard play, it's hard to blame him for the issues.

mcglynn has played center better than satele has in my opinion. lets get the first 5 healthy and see what happens. it's really not fair to judge the unit until then. that said when i watch other games many teams o-lines look much worse than the colts.

  3. I'm not singing his praises. He certainly hasn't been perfect. As you said, he's not a good pulling guard, but that's probably why we run more to the left side than to the right, and with more success. I'm okay with him not being a good pulling guard, we can compensate for that in several different ways.

But the numbers bear this out: we run with more success off left tackle and left guard than we do running up the middle, right guard, or right tackle.

I hope to see Reitz back in the lineup sooner rather than later. It sounds like he's not ready to go this week, but eventually he'll take over at left guard again. And we'll be able to get a good idea of whether he is a legitimate starter in the NFL.

I'd like to have a new right guard and right tackle next season, and I don't see Olsen fitting into our plans beyond Reitz's injury. I'm just saying that the problems on our line are bigger on the right side than they are on the left side.

interesting. i think until the top five can actually play together we won't be able to get a true read on this line. i for one think justice, costanzo and mcglynn have been just fine. satele has been a huge disappointment and olsen is olsen. i think justice and mcglynn are both here for more than one season. they are very well thought of by the powers that be.

  4. Lol well lets look at those two interceptions, shall we? The first was actually bad coverage. He was nowhere near the man, just an awful throw. The second? Great play by his teammate, bad luck for Michigan, no credit to Te'o. I liked Te'o more than most preseason, but now he is just overrated. It is obvious you can't scout you just look at stats.

"Lol 13 interceptions last year? Best corner evar!!"

"3 INTERCEPTIONS BY A LB?????????? Step aside Patrick Willis!

michigan way overrated and will lose a few more in the weakest BCS conference out there. smoke and mirrors last year, reality this year.

  5. Unfortunately , we are not blessed with depth at any o-line position, so having our starters back is a huge deal. I am concerned with Satele being out though, Hope Shipley can call the right protection to keep Luck upright instead of looking up at the roof on his back.

    olsen is hurt also.

  6. people are always mentioning right guard and right tackle as problem areas. i think mcglynn has been solid and versatile and justice when healthy has done fine. no one mentions left guard at all. olsen has struggled and what has reitz ever shown to be considered a fixture ? i do like reitz but he has a lot to prove yet. hopefully he and satele are ready to go next week. i'd love to see the first five together. those five could be solid for some time as none of them are even 30 yet. watching other liners around the league i don't see the colts as one of the worst at all. heck baltimore looked awful up front. cowboys, eagles, saints, green bay. none of those o-lines have looked better than the colts. given the injuries i think they've done pretty well. it's not like there is a first rate running back lined up behind luck either.

  7. yep

interesting. i remember when you were so critical of grigson obtaining justice and mcglynn that you used the number of sacks allowed when they were starting for the eagles as the core of your criticism. has vick changed his style of play ? despite the injuries this year the colts o-line has certainly performed much better than that of the eagles, cowboys packers and others. since the so called great howard mudd got to philly and he jettisoned justice, mcglynn, max jean-gilles and jamal jackson how have they fared ?

  8. do you think coaches are right all the time and fans are wrong all the time just because we are fans?

no one is right all the time. however, the biggest difference between any of us rewatching the game and the coaches rewatching it and grading it accordingly is huge. they know EXACTLY what each players reponsibilities are on every play. they know what pass coverage was called, what pass blocking scheme was called etc. a lineman can have a pancake block but if it wasn't his guy he gets a failing grade. my brother has been an assistant coach at a lower college level for 8 years. he says grading film is done the same everywhere. first and foremost a player is graded on did they execute the proper assignment and secondly the quality of said execution. a good block on the wrong guy is a failing grade. freelancing in team sports is a recipe for disaster.

  9. Freeman- Its hard to find a LB like Freeman. Good at pass protection and against the run. He is all over the feild and had really excelled at LB. Angerer could have some friendly competion.

Redding- Redding saved the day against the run. He lead the team in tackles for loss. He also got constant pressure. He is a great leader for the defense and the win against Min.

Avery- He was lucks favorite target going for 9 receptions and 111 yards. Avery was constantly open and gashed the Min defense.

McAfee- The punter doesnt get much love but he should here. He hit 2 punts over 60yds and averaged 58yds a punt. He did a great job and he had some booming kicks for the kickoffs.

mcafee was huge ! he saved them especially after hilton put them in a bad situation by not fair catching that punt that put them on the 2. i'd add mcglynn and essex too.

  10. and we are still terrible in completion percentage allowed (27th in the league) also allowing 8.3 yards per catch

i think thats a deceiving number. ponder rarely threw the ball down the field yesterday. those little 5-8 yard outs are high percentage throws for every team. stats as a whole rarely if ever tell the whole story. not reliable data. marshalls numbers in the opener are the main villain.

  11. McGlynn did ok. But his shotgun snaps were dangerous.

We dodged a bullet that one or two of his snaps were not fumbled.

On this forum I have been critical of Samson Satele's blocking, but one thing I knew was that Satele does deliver a clean snap.

Perhaps McGlynn can do a better job of blocking than Satele?

But most important is being able to provide Luck with a clean snap.

This young team cannot afford turnovers. It will be vital that whomever our Center is, that there are no fumbled exchanges.

Should McGlynn botch the snap, and we lose the game, I am sure we will all be calling for his head.

gotta believe the snaps will be much better this week after a weeks worth of practice. doubt if it's an issue. i looked it up, in 17 games at center with philly no botched or fumbled snaps.

  12. did you even watch the game?

yes. twice. i certainly don't expect you to agree. you've made those two your personal whipping boys for some reason. that's fine. i don't think you'll ever credit either of them on anything so good luck. i hope grigson and pagano have you on speed dial. and yes again both played better than satele.. i just don't understand how seem here don't understand that the first five up front have not played a single whole game as a unit but think they can evaluate already good or bad.

  13. set us back now? not taking an O Lineman earlier in the draft such as RG and RT while thinking that Mcglynn and Justice were good enough to start for one year (yes I know it was a low level move thats a stop gap but there were better stop gap O Linemen out there and still is)

those two certainly weren't a problem last week. both played much better than satele.

  14. set us back now? not taking an O Lineman earlier in the draft such as RG and RT while thinking that Mcglynn and Justice were good enough to start for one year (yes I know it was a low level move thats a stop gap but there were better stop gap O Linemen out there and still is)

still smarter than grigson and pagano i see.

  15. your talking about pulling your guard or tackle? thats part of power running(not just power running lots of teams do it) you pull guards or tackles on trap plays and counter plays and other misdirection plays. simply misdirection to get the defense going one way and pulling the backside guard or tackle to come kick out the DE or OLB(they simply turn into the lead blocker)

they trapped pretty well last sunday.

  16. I agree RomanianColtFan Reitz is our best guard and does not need to be replaced by anyone. Costanzo and Reitz are a good tandem on the left side. We just need Reitz to get back on the field. Right guard is where we need help and Essex can't be any worse than the other two.

right guard appeared to be just fine last sunday. i like reitz's potential but to this point he is pretty much an unknown entity. this first unit needs to get healthy and play together. until then it's not fair to judge them good or bad.

  17. Most Lol are over reacting when it comes the the Oline.... players like Jeff likenbach has no place on an NFL team... but guys like justice, Samson are good Lineman... both can play football... this team will look much better as the season goes on.. by week six the Oline will look like Costanzo LT, Mike LG, Samson C, Essex RG, Justice RT.

will be the best looking Oline since the days of Glenn

that wouldn't surprise me at all. i do think mcglynn stays on the right side due to his and justices familiarity with each other. i like essex.

  18. Castonzo, Essex,Satele,Anderson, and reitz is my ideal line up after week 6

that makes no sense. a rookie who hasn't been able to even practice and a guy who hasn't played tackle. it's ideal to get luck hurt. get the starting five healthy and have essex for experienced depth at either tackle or guard and see what happens.

  19. if i'm scott and it's only about the money i go to the highest bidder. however considering his long tenure in the league i think i'd wait for the right circumstance to occur on a playoff likely team. i can't see why a guy like scott or a recently signed koppen would be interested in the colts or any other rebuilding team unless those types of teams were the only ones interested.

  20. Just look at the best o-lines and ask yourself why they are so much better than the Colts o-line. The Broncos may have the best line and it's because they drafted lineman early in the draft year after year. RT Orlando Franklin was a 2nd round pick in 2011. LG Zane Beattles was a 2nd round pick in 2010. Center J.D. Walton was a 3rd round pick in 2010. LT Ryan Clady was a 1st round pick in 2008. RG Chris Kuper was a 5th round pick in 2006.

    CASTONZO 1ST RD. 22ND OVERALL

    JUSTICE 2ND RD. 39TH OVERALL

    SATELE 2ND RD. 60TH OVERALL

    MCGLYNN 4TH RD. 109TH OVERALL

using that criteria it certainly appears the colts have comparable talent.
