Colts know exactly how healthy JT is currently, he's practicing in the facility and there was already a rumor that they were going to have physical in the previous week.

Fans won't know, but that doesn't mean that Colts don't know how healthy JT is.

The money Colts and JT eventually would finalize if he were to re-sign would be totally worth for what he'd bring to the field, as he's still young enough to play at elite level through this contract extension.

Now, if Colts end up paying Pittman 20+ million just because they can't draft another good receiver, that'd be totally NOT worth it for the value you're talking about.

Yea paying Pittman that much would likely be a mistake but that has nothing to do with it being a mistake to overpay for jt

Rb’s don’t make big bucks when you compare them to quarterbacks, wide receivers, edge rushers, tackles and cornerbacks to name a few obvious positions.  An elite player at those positions make significantly more.  Even above average players do.  They are the one’s getting paid.  Not running backs.  Running backs are far down the list.  I don’t see any problem paying an elite running back a top contract for the position.  That’s not shooting your self in the foot.   You’re shootings your self in the foot when your quarterback and line don’t perform for the money they’re getting paid.  That’s when you’re in trouble.  I hope we can find a way to keep JT.  He’s a game changer.  We are lucky to have him.  I personally don’t want to lose him over a 13 or 14m a year contract.  That would be a shame imo.

And there is good reason they don't make the big bucks.  It would be a mistake to pay jt the big bucks he wants because there is no way he has that value to the team no matter how elite he is.

Plus, we don't even know how healthy he is given he refuses to have a physical.

Of course if you lose an elite QB it is disastrous. Losing an elite RB isn't as bad if you have an elite QB. Wentz was not elite, not even close. If a team has a QB that is outside of the top 15, having an elite RB is very important. Not sure why a few in here can't understand that.

If we had Andrew Luck, of course I would be OK with RB by committee as long as the RB's don't stink. Not hard to understand what I am trying to convey.

An elite rb helps but that is never going to be enough to carry a team.  That is why it is not important enough to pay elite RB big bucks.

You need the qb and the line much more and you tie up big bucks in the wrong position then all you accomplish is shooting yourself in the foot

It is because we know what Wentz is, we don't with Taylor who is only 24 years old. Even last year playing injured, Taylor still averaged 4.5 yards a carry on 192 carries. In 2021, he had a Barry Sanders type of year. By the way Wentz was average at his best in 2021. When we beat the Pats in 2021, that was all Taylor. Wentz threw for like 47 yards that game. Had it not been for Taylor, we would have never been 9-6 at 1 point and the media was saying we were a threat to make deep playoff run because we could run the ball.

Wentz never led the Eagles to the SB, it was Nick Foles that led them, Foles played all the playoff games and great in the SB. Wentz was great in the Regular season but Foles is the one who led them to the promise land.

I will stick to what I have been saying, RB by committee only works (regarding winning a SB) if you have 2 good RB's - which we don't without Taylor or you have a QB that is a top 10 QB in the league and as of now AR isn't. Since 2018, every QB that has won the SB has been a top 10 QB so they could go RB by committee because they at least had 2 good RB's. Brady, Mahomes, Brady, Stafford - yes Stafford was top 10 in 2021, and last year Mahomes again. The Colts and Taylor need to mend their differences because without Taylor we aren't winning many games this season. We should beat Houston but that isn't a given, they stink though.

Bottomline is, if you don't have a top 10 QB you better have a great RB to even have a chance at doing anything. Tennessee has been good mainly because of Henry. Take Tannehill off those Titans teams from 2019-2021 and insert someone like Cousins or Dak, they may have won a SB.

It is optimistic to think we don't know what Taylor is because RBs tend to peak early and then decline.

I think what is also missed trying to compare Taylor to Wentz is the depth at the position and how much it effects winning.

    1) If you lose an elite QB then where is your team?  (we saw that after Luck left)

    2) If you lose an elite RB then where is your team?  (seeing that now)

While 2 definitely hurts, 1 is much more devastating.

Most teams are prioritizing positions that require top talent to succeed and finding that RB isn't one of those positions.

Out of the top 15 highest paid QBs in the NFL today 4 have won a superbowl. Top 5 average $50,000,000 per year and out of those 5 one has won 1 superbowl. To pay an elite RB a few Million more a year and a top 5 QB a few million less are you suggesting that you diminish your chance for winning a Superbowl?

My point is only one QB out of 32 teams is going to win a Superbowl each year. Winning the Superbowl is the ultimate but having a winning and an exciting team sells tickets and excites the fan base. If your most exciting player on  your team is an elite RB pay him. In our case the chance of us winning a Superbowl this year is as probable as Ball State winning the national championship. No offense Ball State fans but 2nd place woundn't be bad!😎

So pay an rb even when doing so lessens our chances of winning.

    No

Why do players hate playing for the Colts!? Lol

We dropped him a little over a week ago and he re-signed with us a day later.

He could have easily went to another team so not sure it is about the Colts

Actually the Most to Blame for the contract standoff is the league(31 other owners) who don't want star RB's to be paid their true worth and they save each other a few million(or more in some cases)by standing together to not pay them.

Irsay is just going with the flow of the other owners......Kinda like the league is against  signing players to 100% Guaranteed contracts like other sports do.

Obviously rbs true worth isn't that high.

Come on... Congrats on being retired and financially solid. But this is the premise you presented, so why not engage on it?

In general, the average US worker that you referred to earlier, gets offered a job with a different company that pays them 'a million dollars a year,' are they free to leave their current job to accept that new job?

A lot of companies have a non compete clause to prevent you from working for another company in the same field

JT is more than welcome to find a job in the real world.  So he isn't technically stuck...but most other professions would be a massive pay cut

And the rookie contract stipulates that, after 3 years, the player can seek an extension. So they are also honoring the conditions.

It's weird that you think it's fine for a team to cut players (and their salaries), but it's bad form for a player to want to be given an extension when he's eligible.

And paying other teammates early might mean nothing to you, but it means something to JT.

The key word being seek an extension...not force an extension

It is weird that you think the crybaby is fine to fake an injury when he doesn't get his way

We will just have to agree to disagree about him honoring his contract. Teams don't honor contracts. They cut players all the time.

This is an understood part of the CBA. Players are eligible to get extensions after year 3 (or year 2 for UDFAs). Him asking for a new deal is not any different than when other good players do it.

And considering that many of JT's teammates didn't have to suck it up and honor their deals, I can see where he is coming from.

The contract stipulates that teams can cut players...so yes they are honoring the contract.

    Nice try

Just because Colts did it with other players means nothing.

  12. 3 minutes ago, shasta519 said:

But several of his teammates were still on their respective rookie contracts when they got big extensions. JT is not getting that treatment for reasons out of his control (unless he is actually hiding an injury).

You can't compare his situation to MPJ. The franchise tag for MPJ will pay him 2x what it will pay JT. And WRs have much longer careers than RBs. And the market has exploded in recent years. MPJ knows he will get paid by somebody, even if it's not the Colts.

And more importantly, MPJ wasn't an All Pro like JT. He hasn't been a top 5 player at his position like JT. He doesn't have the track record to be chirping about a new contract.

I just think it's an unfair comparison. And I actually wouldn't be surprised to see MPJ get an in-season extension at some point.

Maybe JT should have worked on being a WR if he wants paid as a WR.

  13. 5 minutes ago, shasta519 said:

But he's a RB. He won't have the same earning potential as other positions and could be out of the league by his late 20s even. He's likely only getting one shot at a huge contract. And he's going to be worth more at age 24 than he is age 25 or even age 26 (if he gets tagged). Plus, injuries are a major risk to that earning potential as well.

Look at what happened to his own teammate, Marlon Mack. Tore his Achilles in Week 1 of the last year of his rookie deal. The Colts threw him a bone last year, but Mack will makee a fraction of what he would have made if he got an extension early OR got to hit FA.

And Mack isn't on JT's level. The difference in earning potential for JT in that scenario would be tens of millions.

Rookie contracts are all the same length.  Of course, players that do well WANT to get to the next contract sooner.

He is still on contract though.  He should suck it up and honor it.

  14. 4 minutes ago, shasta519 said:

    1. The Colts haven't even made him an offer though.

Do we know that for sure?

Although they don't need to make him an offer. He is still on contract.

JT is either hiding an injury or faking an injury.  Not exactly a legit strategy to get yours so to speak.

  15. 19 minutes ago, shasta519 said:

I didn't break it, but I am certainly one of the few who voted the other way.

Here's my take on it. I don't think either side is blameless. And there is also the RB market overall that is part of the issue.

But the Colts FO set a precedent on paying guys early. Ballard has long preached about paying your own and he has practiced what he preached...several times. He even did so at the same position as JT. And he's been praised for this philosophy.

And now, when it's JT's turn, they say "well let's wait and see." They want him to prove his worth (again), except this time in a new  system with a first time HC and mobile QB who isn't going to check down to him, will likely take 8-10 carries of his...AND will vulture goal line TDs.

In his mind, it will be very difficult to put up close to his AP year and get the contract that he seeks. Now maybe JT overvalues himself, given the overall RB market. But he is one of the best RBs in the NFL.

Miles Sanders played in this system on an elite offense with an elite QB, made a PB and still only got $6M AAV. JT won't be playing in an elite offense or with an elite QB.

So I don't blame JT for feeling a sense of urgency or wanting to get out. He doesn't want to burn another year of his career on a rebuilding team in the hopes that he MIGHT get paid. And with how the FO has shifted their mindset into doing things they haven't done before, I wouldn't trust them to not use the franchise tag either...even though they haven't since Ballard got here.

Meanwhile, Jim Irsay is on Twitter saying silly stuff about how nobody would care if JT was out of the league.

JT did hire a questionable agent. And he has continued to employ him. But that same agent got his teammate, Shaq Leonard, nearly $100M out of contract negotiations with the same GM. And he apparently was able to get valid contract offers from teams when he was seeking a trade. So was it really that questionable of a choice?

JT moping around practice is on him though. But he's been dealt a bad hand.

I could agree with much of that if JT wasn't still on contract.  He has another year to go on his current rookie contract.

And I see nothing wrong with the Colts being smarter about how they are handing out contracts.  Stinks for JT sure but again he is still on contract.

JT should have played out his contract (like PIttman is doing) and gotten paid or traded next offseason.

I have no respect for how JT handled it.  He is still on contract.

It's crazy to me how most people stand up 100% for management when it comes to their sports team's players vs their employer, yet are 100% against management when it's them vs their employer.  I still don't understand this logic........

I bet it might be a little different if Taylor was at the end of his current contract.  He is fighting for more money when he is still on contract.  That isn't going to earn him much support, especially when complaining about making such an awful $4 million per year.  Most people don't pity millionaires.

  17. Maybe I'm just mean but i'd franchise tag him for as long as I could even if he was sitting the bench.   It would help prevent other players from thinking that trying to hold the team hostage is an acceptable path to take.

Unless another team offered fair value in a trade.

I don't think any less of him as a human being. I think Saturday knew his shortcomings as a coach. He knew that he had no college or pro experience coaching entering those 8 games. He's not a Shane Steichen where he can do an RB by committee and succeed. He didn't have Richardson and Minshew at the QB position. There were lots of injuries. In all honesty, Saturday was set up to fail (regardless of his experience). I don't see Taylor lying here, as the timeline fits where his injury could have got worse from being on the field towards the end of the year, and that coincides with Saturday trying to earn a position as a HC.

This sort of thing was common back in the day. People played through concussions, people played when they were hurt. Coaches did what it takes to win. In all honesty, Saturday was never getting this chance again unless he worked years to climb the ladder in the college ranks and the pro ranks. He was a HS coach. Once you look at it from that perspective, and see what a disadvantage he was at, and how desperate he was to get that job (he wanted the job for the team he played for as a player, and he's an Irsay guy).

If true, it shows Saturday is pretty selfish and has no business being a coach

I know you didn't mean this to be taken in a negative light and I have no idea if he will get a lot better and sometimes i can get a little to optimistic but this kid seems like the real deal and if anyone can do it I would put my money on him.

Evidence that I am relying on are

    1. his study habits - I have read that he is so engrossed in the playbook that players have had to shout at him to get his head out of the book.  This tells me he is committed to excellence (the late Al Davis would love him) and will do what it takes to be great.   He has also said this, but actions speak louder, and his actions are clearly backing his speech.

    2. The video in the op shows that he is doing more than simple workouts.  He is taking this modern science approach to advance himself.  The commentary by Allen stating what it did for him and what he sees in AR are strong indicators that he may also be an outlier.

    3. He was named a captain as a rookie and only 21 years old.  To me that shows he has the Moxy or "It" factor as well.  Drive/Will alone can take you far in life.  His teammates recognize this.  They would not vote him as captain unless he already showed he was worthy.

He may not improve his completion percentage, but I think he has a strong chance to.

    The Pessimist View

    1) he is hard of hearing and that is why they had to shout

    2) he thought he was going to play virtual reality games

    3) he threatened them with unspeakable things if they didn't vote him captain

Just kidding.   He definitely seems to doing and saying the right things.
