I'll at least stay up to see the 1000th post. At least one milestone will be reached tonight. Excited for tomorrow!

I'll feel so defeated if I submit to sleep.

I really liked the Zibs signing when we brought him in. However, it was very obvious very quickly that he was not the solution. I would also imagine that this signals a draft pick being used on safety (but, probably not a high one.....unless we are drafting Betheas replacement).
Why draft Bethea's replacement when he's the same age as Landry. I think Lefeged is our backup and this isn't indicating a safety as a draft pick. I thought of it more as freeing up some cap for another FA signing. Perhaps a Guard.

Wayne.....
Hilton
Brazil ... Palmer, Whalen, Adams?
Kris Adams is with the Giants now. As it stands now we have:
Wayne
Hilton
Brazill
Nathan Palmer
Griff Whalen
Jabin Sambrano
Jeremy Kelley
I agree we should go ahead and look in the draft. I like Chris Harper in the 3rd or Tavarres King in the 4th I like Terrance Williams, but he's projected 2nd. And I know Stedman Bailey is a slot, but I have a feeling about him.

Why not combine the 2 and spend it on a guy that you know will be productive? 16 mil for this guy is just crazy IMO. Hope I eat my words but right now I wouldn't even bet that he beats out Jerry Hughes. I understand getting creative when you have to pinch your pennies but I don't understand taking a 16 million $ risk on a guy like this. This is the one I really don't get. Toler, Cherilus I can understand but 16 mil to this guy? I don't know man
I know what you mean, but remember that in every contract, there's a way out. If he turns out to be a dud, then we cut our losses and move on without paying the full $16m. Also remember that the $16m is spread over 4 years and $4m doesn't sound near as bad.
-
Hmm. It's amazing what a completely run of the mill player can get these days. 16 mill is that what I saw??
It's true. it's slightly above average for a starting OLB. We have to spend the money so why not take a risk and also sign a backup guy for that risk in Sidbury?

Tell me more of what you know about Walden
He'll be 28 next season and he's a bit undersized, but coaches seem to love the guy. He's a hard working journeyman type who worked his way up to starting for the Packers. There's definitely potential and he's gotten better every year since he's been in the league. He probably won't be worth the money, but if he plays as an average player, we wouldn't have overpaid him by much. he'll fit the scheme well having played in Caper's 3-4 defense. He's had some history of off-the-field concerns regarding violence, but it's speculated that his girlfriend made up the story so we can't know for sure, but he definitely plays with a fire under him, so what he lacks in natural talent, he makes up for in effort. He didn't score high on his Wonderlic (as a matter of fact is was quite low), but GB coaches said learning the defense would not be a problem for him. It's not as low-risk as our other signing, but there's still high reward possibility.
-
I'd be excited for Landry. He would add an attitude to the defense that the Colts have been missing. Walden has a bit of that too and I saw some flares from Hughes last year. we don't want to be soft anymore.
-
Grigson said that he wouldn't go after name guys.
I think Grigson is going according to plan.
Exactly and I should have thought of that before I got all excited about what Irsay was tweeting
-
As an emotional fan, I was a bit frustrated by the signings right when they occurred. Thinking back now, I've calmed down a little bit and I think most of the frustration might have been because of the massive hype job Irsay did on Twitter . So I'll react to these signings one-by-one:
OT Gosder Cherilus: I was never sold on Levitre in our system for some reason so I had my mind set about picking up Vasquez and I honestly thought it was pretty well determined that we would sign him given the connections and blatant need for talent. I was flustered when I saw the report that the Broncos had gotten him, but very soon after, the news broke of Cherilus. I was immediately relieved that we had made a signing. I recognized the name from played Madden because it was so unique but didn't know much about his production. I saw a lot of strife from fans, but quickly found out he was the best lineman on the Lions (albeit, the whole team was disappointing) and even the 2nd rated RT in FA. Overall, was pleased straight away.
CB Greg Toler: I was surprised we signed an outside corner before resigning any of our own, but I'm a fan of Toler and quickly watched some videos on YouTube. He's a hard working guy and though I like Powers, a lot, I feel he's a good guy to fill his shoes. The day seemed like it was going great.
OLB Erik Walden: I was immediately in shock when I saw this as I had been expecting Cliff Avril and was so excited for it. My brother is a diehard Packers fan (Yes, week 5 was a rough day in my household) and he had continuously stated his disarray at the way Walden performed. I was upset for awhile, especially after seeing his contract details. Looking back now, I'm excited for the year. He's an interesting player who has had some bad games, but plays the run pretty well. The average salary for a starting OLB is around $3.65m so I'll admit we're overpaying for him, but not by all that much. We have the money, and it's expected to overpay in FA.
OLB Lawrence Sidbury: Wasn't amazed at this signing and found it very dissatisfying, but looking at it now, I feel good about it. I knew it was low-risk from the beginning, but I think when we combine Walden and Sidbury and Hughes into the mix with Mathis, we will continuously have fresh, able bodies on the field to make plays. Depth is always important. Plus, no matter how much I loved Freeney, he didn't do well at all last year, and having a mix of versatile young guys should be an improvement if all works out. Not to mention the savings.
OG Donald Thomas: I'm still not completely sure how to react to this. It's probably another low-risk high-reward signing that I am ok with and depth is important at the OLine position perhaps even more so than others. I've heard that Thomas performed well in New England when he was called upon and I'm happy to give him a shot at a starting position, but I still feel we may need to search for a difference maker in the draft or another solid FA pickup.
Add these new guys to the resigning of Darius Butler (which I'm extremely happy about) and we are well under way in building a 53-man roster that is young, versatile, and deep with talent. Yes we still have holes to fill. Definitely. Ricky Jean Francis is on the way for a visit and LaRon Landry is as well. If we land them then we'll have a solid defense heading forward, with room to improve everywhere, but no glaring holes. Depending on how we handle the rest of FA, we could end up with another offensive draft, filling needs on the interior line, and with no news on Donnie Avery, the particularly wide gap in our receiving core. At the end of the day, I'm still excited and looking forward to more of Grigson's work.

I found Engage Eight on Twitter recently and they have been giving up to the minute news reports and I haven't found one to be inaccurate. A good follow to keep up with FA this year! I'm having the tweets sent to my phone.

Just saw the same thing on a tweet from Engage Eight. https://twitter.com/EngageEight

For whatever reason, I'm not sold on Kruger, but I do like his toughness.

Beat me to the news by 1 minute. Could a mod merge?

Ryan! An essential piece of Colts history.
-
He's already on pace to get over 5k total yards, including rushing. Is that an all-time rookie total yardage record?
-
I think Luck is a catchy name in itself. If Manning was the goat or football Jesus , is Andrew " the 2nd Coming"?
Na nick names don't seem to stick to QBs. Only Chucky called Peyton " The Sheriff". RG3 is just Initials. Actually does any QB in the league really have a nickname?
Matty "Ice" Ryan
"Big Ben" Roethlisberger

I didnt think it was something you had to be eligible for, I thought once you are on the team they can put you on the practice squad if they wish
Players aren't eligible for the practice squad if they have been on any team's 53-man roster or any team's practice squad for 2 seasons.

does anyone know Chism's number? on colts.co and Stampedeblue they have him as 39 and karim as 39. I thought I saw karim wearing 39 on the nfl network the other day and would really like to know Chism's so I can try and watch for his playing next time I get to see them on TV.
thanks for your help
Chism is also wearing #39 as of now, someone will eventually change after some cuts are made and more numbers are freed up. It's the same case as Jermale Hines and Mewelde Moore both wearing #26 for now. Just look for the blue #39 jersey instead of the white.

Noone is certain to make the team, and someone like Brody Eldridge, who has shown bad attitude and mediocre talent, is not an exception. I have never been a fan of him. if he was such an excellent blocker, then why was our run game never that good with him on the field. And now we sign another QB, So correct me if im wrong but we have
Andrew Luck
Drew Stanton
Chandler Harnish
Trevor Vitattoe
and now David Legree
Do we really need this many QB's? and of all of these, who is most likely to be the 2nd string QB to back up Luck. It better be someone who can perform. I would like to see it be Stanton.
Luck's not there for OTA's and Harnish is out for 2-3 weeks, so the signing of Legree was, in all likelihood, an addition of a third quarterback to run another squad during camp. Probably not a contender for the backup spot, but I could be wrong!

Irsay Tweets: Decoded

Time to delve deep into this mystery and do some detective work.
With the definite clues that Irsay has given us, we know the deal is for a WR, said WR is NOT Victor Cruz, and the deal has been going on for 5 days. Let's take a look at some of the more abstract clues we may be able to gather from Irsay's tweets. The following conclusion take place in a vacuum, relying only on quotes directly from Irsay's Twitter page to come up with a (likely incorrect) candidate.
Here's an inside look as to why Jim Irsay is referring to.... Miles Austin.
"...we want to win so bad our toes ache..." - This could be a reference to former Cowboys WR Roy Williams. Williams suffered a foot injury early in his career and Miles Austin was eventually the one to replace him.
"the car almost ended up in the ditch" - This was the quote that ultimately led me to decide on the Cowboys. The car wreck portrayed could be a reference to the car crash that killed Jerry Brown, a former player for both the Colts and the Cowboys, making the important team connection.
"4 minutes ago we started running the no-huddle" - last year during a game with the Atlanta Falcons, the Cowboys nearly came back for a victory largely in part due to the no-huddle offense. It would have been a victory had it not been for defensive slip-ups, mainly by Orlando Scandrick. The best receiver in that game? Miles Austin. 7 catches 76 yards.
"...moving the arrow again but its nip n tuck" - This could be a possible reference to the FX drama, Nip/Tuck. It took some digging, but I found that Anne Heche, who shares a first name with Austin's mother, was featured in 3 episodes of the series in 2005, Austin's final year of college football.
"Everyone stand by, pour strong drink..." - By "pour strong drink", Irsay could have been referring to liquor. Perhaps from Austin Liquors, in Skokie Illinois. 3 miles from Irsay's place of birth, Lincolnwood.
"he has The Ringer... the whites..." - A ringer is the main way to score a point in a game of horseshoes, the Colts' logo."the whites" could be referring to the white home jerseys worn by the Dallas Cowboys, unique to the league.
"We ride the roller coaster..." - Six Flags, theme parks famous for their roller coasters are located all across the country. The original Six Flags park? Six Flags Over Texas. 1 1/2 miles away from Dallas Cowboys Stadium.
There you have it. All the evidence you'll ever need. You can really make quotes hint at anything you want. Just threw this together while I was bored waiting for the real news to come out. Enjoy
