  1. Curious where you read that, but it's not actually what Luck said. He said that the defense was more spread out, not that they backed off. Them being spread out allowed the offense to do some things. The defense didn't back off, actually, until that final drive where the Colts scored the game tying FG, and that's because the Panthers were trying to protect against a go-ahead TD. Up to that point, it was mostly the same defense, maybe with the linebackers dropping a little deeper, but they were still playing tight coverage.

It says at the very beginning where I read that. It was posted at StampedeBlue.

And 'more spread out' means more zone rather than press or man which was what Carolina was doing most of the game that I could recall

  2. Post from StampedeBlue:

[Luck] said it after the game. Panthers were playing press until the 4th quarter then they played off the receivers. Luck was able to complete because the slow, non physical receivers we have didn’t have to do anything to get open. Once in OT the panthers tightened back up and the receivers couldn’t separate.

It seemed like all of a sudden the Panthers couldn't cover anyone in the 4th - if they went to a deep prevent zone, that's probably the reason. Why on earth do teams do that.
