  1. The Jaguars couldn't reach a contract agreement with Josh Scobee and have franchised him to keep him on the team and out of the free agent market. He's not too happy about it though; wanted a long-term deal and didn't get a conducive offer.

The Buccaneers were able to retain their multi-talented offensive lineman Jeremy Zuttah with a 4 year deal.

I apologize for misleading readers. The Jaguars used their non-exclusive franchise tag on Scobee, and he can talk to other teams under that tag, but the Jaguars have the right to match any offer or receive two first-round draft selections in return if he signs elsewhere.

    Again, I apologize.

  2. I've just been following Shefter and LaCoforna (sp?) on twitter. So far today, Stevie Johnson and Arian Foster have signed deals.

Lions DE Cliff Avril, Jags K Scobee, Buccaneers OL Zuttah, Seahawks RB Lynch have been in the news as well. Check out the NFL General section for most of this stuff. Several people keep that updated from multiple sources, so it's probably your best bet.

  4. Clock is ticking. Need to be tagged by 4:00 p.m.

    Will Colts use it?

FAs are signing around the league. Are the Colts even negotiating with theirs?

If it's all waiting on the Peyton decision, then they need to go ahead and make the Peyton decision.

I agree. Or at least lock up someone who is necessary to the team, no matter who is throwing the footballs in 2012.

On the other hand, if you don't have to use the franchise tag, it's better not to do so simply because of the immense burden it places on the salary cap. However, if you've got someone who you really want to keep around and you're having a hard time getting a deal done---use it and keep your guy.

  5. who is Phil Taylor and Joe Haden?

All i can think about when i think of the Browns are Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn (Who never succeeded...)

Joe Haden is their 2nd year CB.

Phillip Taylor is their rookie DT.

Also, another good player on Defense is veteran Scott Fujita, a 10 year LB that they picked up from New Orleans a few years back.

D'Qwell Jackson and Chris Gocong are each LB's in their 6th season and piled up 228 tackles between them last year.

    Hope that helps!

  6. Something else that I think is important is that you stick with the players you bring in. Cleveland is a prime example of this. They have had a slew of good players come in over the years, drafted high nearly every year, and still lose all the time.

If they still had some of those playmakers on offense and defense (Joe Jurevicius, Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, and Andra Davis to name several more recent weapons) they would be a tough match-up for any team. They are going to shoot themselves in the foot again this year when they let Hillis leave.

In my opinion, you've got to stick with the people you have. Not to a point of ridiculousness, obviously...

In the case of the Browns: You don't need to draft RG3, you have a decent QB in Colt McCoy. Anyone would struggle if Greg Little was their #1 pass catcher. So use the multiple picks you have in the first round to put players around him. Keep Hillis to tote the pigskin, keep McCoy to throw it, draft a corner to play alongside Joe Haden, and put an explosive playmaker on the offense for McCoy to utilize in the pass game.

It seems simple, but they have been messing things up for years instead of committing to who they have. And it wouldn't surprise me to see them trade their draft picks away for RG3.

  7. This isn't important enough to start a new thread but I don't know where else to post it, but Irsay has not tweeted at all today. That's actually quite unusual for him. wonder if something is about to go down.

Maybe something already is down...the power... :)

Sorry, couldn't resist. And yes, I know it was lame.

  8. That's good for Seattle. He's enjoyed a career resurgence in Seattle after his Buffalo days didn't go too well. Personally, I'm a Lynch fan

I am as well. He is a hard runner who doesn't get a lot of credit for the work he does. I think he would've done better in Buffalo if the backfield hadn't been full of veterans and other promising players just itching to take his job.

  9. I think the Colst are playoff team at full strength.....because they were for 10 years in a row before 2011

But you always use everything you can....

Obviously...the draft is cheaper than free agency..and thats pretty much what we're limited to right now

Absolutely they are if every player is 100% healthy.

  10. I don't think it'll be a one year deal, more like 3 or a ring whichever comes first. And why he'd come back, for the previous 10 years they weren't a 2-14 team, he was the difference and he knows it.

Even with Luck in the wings? I don't see Irsay passing on Luck even if Peyton can throw him 70 yards from one hash to the other. I wish it'd be like you said, though.

You are right on with this. He was a large portion of the reason why the Colts are perennial Super Bowl contenders, and don't forget the slew of injuries this year at key positions as well. I think we could draft high in the first two rounds multiple times this year by trading later round picks (who hardly ever come to fruition anyway) and keep the team we have and be a Super Bowl team. I just don't think that Irsay is thinking the thinking that I'm thinking and that thinking is what makes me think that Irsay will draft Luck and offer Manning a very short-term deal. Which Manning will not appreciate.

    What do you think? :)

Not trying to shout by the way, just categorizing my responses accordingly.

  11. I could see an incentive based deal elsewhere that has triggers in it that as he passes them adds guaranteed money to the deal, which would then be converted as a signing bonus, and prorated over the length of the contract.

His individual incentives will be deemed NLTBE, because they are based on the previous year statistics(for example 500k for 20 td passes, he threw 0 in 2011), that 500k if earned would go into the 2013 cap. If he went to SF as some suggested, and he had an incentive that said 500k for a trip to the playoffs, that would be included in the 2012 cap because that team went to the playoffs the previous year.

I still feel that his incentive based deal if that is the route goes will still pay him in the end like an elite QB if he hits the goals. I do not think that it's going to be the cheap discounted deal that a lot suggest. It will be risk free early on in my opinion.

I absolutely see incentives as well, and I agree with you. I did not mean to portray the thought that I believed that he would leave because of the incentives or that any team would simply hand him a check, no questions asked. I apologize for my lack of clarity. What I meant to say is that I think if he leaves it will be because the deal offered him here will be short-term, and Peyton wants commitment to him from the team he's playing for.

  12. Some of each, no question. You need to use whatever you can. If there are no solid guards in the draft this year, but your team needs a guard, are you just going to wait until next year and let your QB and running game take a fall? Or would you go after a guy like Grubbs or Nicks to improve your pass protection and running game? You don't need to go crazy in FA and sign every big name out there (isn't that right, Washington or Philly?), but if there's a solid player there that'll fit your system and do well, go after him if you can afford it

Right. This is what I believe as well. For example, Ernie Simms was not a big name in free agency nor did he cause salary cap problems, but he was a good player and a nice contributor last year when he played, and we needed veteran leadership among the linebacking core with Brackett out and Session gone.

  13. Logic suggests (because he missed the entire 2011 season) its a one-year deal....maybe with an option year...

    doubt he'll take that

And this is where the rubber hits the road, the point where dreams shatter, and people face reality.

I agree with you guys. I just thought it was humorous the way things were put... Still, Peyton will not play on a one year, incentive-laden deal. And it's not because he doesn't love the Colts, because he does---it'll be because it's simply not the smart thing to do for either side.

If he stays, he's staying put until he is convinced he can no longer play and retires.

If he leaves, it will be because he feels that he has years of game left and the Colts are not committed to riding with him all of those years.

Why get a one year deal today and let everyone see you play on a formerly 2-14, potentially rebuilding team when the interest level (and possibly pay level) in you is so high in the free agent market right now! He will either make 20+ million with the Colts and be their main man for the next 4 years---or he'll make his 20+ elsewhere for four years.

  14. I think every member of this forum would agree that the Colts are not a Super Bowl caliber team at this time. The method for adding the necessary players to accomplish this, however, has been a moot point. Many prefer signing veterans, free agents, to drafting unproven rookies---no matter how good the prospect is. Still, this view was not endorsed by Tony Dungy, who believed that bringing in a player from another team usually caused division. Following his opinion, the Colts have been largely successful for the past many years, racking up the most league wins of the 2000-2010 decade.

Another much respected coach, Bill Belichick, has added through both free agency and the draft, and has fielded a solid squad every year. (Keep in mind, though, that he has not struck gold on many of his free agent signees.)

A coach regarded as 'up-and-coming', Rex Ryan, has added largely through free agency and has not done well in the draft, and with the exception of last year, participated in the AFC championship game the last three years.

All three men had different methods. All three men are successful, and there really is no 'correct' answer here. This topic is merely intended to draw debate to a new line of thought. So what do you prefer? Drafting rookies, signing veterans, or a mix of the two?

  15. No irritation at all.

The poll question was very simple and direct. You can choose to complicate it up as much as you like, but ultimately it asks you to choose what you will do with the pick.

And ultimately you have to know about Peyton, as well, to make the correct choice. :) Luck is a great prospect, but if he is not necessary---why take him? And thanks for understanding.

  16. The Giant's 2011 salary cap was $120MM

The QB position for the Giants:

    QB1 Eli Manning 2011 cap hit: $12.940475MM

    QB2 David Carr 2011 cap hit $0.86MM

QB3 Ryan Perrilloux (2010 UDFA from LSU) I assume nothing since he is the flex person that keeps getting cut and re-signed to the practice squad all year long.

Total QB position cap charge = $13.80MM, or 11.5% of total team cap.

    The Saint's 2011 salary cap was $120MM

The QB position for the Saints:

    QB1 Drew Brees 2011 cap hit: $7.3935MM

    QB2 Chase Daniel 2011 cap hit $0.48MM

QB3 Sean Canfield (2011 7th round overall 239 pick from Oregon State University) I assume at league minimum $0.4MM

Total QB position cap charge = $8.2735MM, or 6.89% of total team cap.

    The Steeler's 2011 salary cap was $120MM

The QB position for the Steelers:

    QB1 Ben Roethlisberger 2011 cap hit: $11.32MM

    QB2 Byron Leftwich 2011 cap hit $2MM

QB3 Jerrod Johnson (2011 UDFA from Texas A&M) I assume at league minimum $0.4MM

Total QB position cap charge = $13.72MM, or 11.4% of total team cap.

Thanks for the calculations. It is both interesting and helpful, and gives a good idea of where the rest of the league stands with QB salary.

  17. Paying 20% of the cap to the QB represents paying a top 3 QB starter, and by far the most expensive backup, if Manning and Luck are on the roster and the option bonus is paid.

    Far from ideal at all.

And everyone needs to remember as well that most contracts are given with a steady increase in salary each year, which adversely affects your salary cap as the years go by. Each year that Manning and Luck are on the same roster, cap gets tighter and tighter and cap trouble is BIG trouble to be in. It's also frustrating.

This 20% figure that UndecidedFrog and firejimcalwell have mentioned is just for this upcoming year, not every year to come, as UndecidedFrog mentioned earlier, I believe. The only way paying 20% is worth it is if Manning only plays one more year and then is done. Otherwise, it's more trouble to keep both on the roster than the Indy Front Office wants to deal with.

  18. I know this is going to irritate UndecidedFrog since he just said that this topic has nothing to do with Manning, but if I was making this decision it would all hinge on Peyton's health. If he's healthy, and will be for several years, take someone else, not Luck, and build the team around the 'now'.

If Peyton isn't healthy or will only last a year or two, you absolutely draft Luck, and plan for the future. If Peyton is only going to be able to play for another year or two---when Luck enters, he and Peyton both know that in a year or two Peyton is gone and he is starting. That would definitely ease tensions on both sides, and make the learning process/waiting process easier. If Peyton isn't healthy, he is released and Luck becomes the instant starter from training camp on.
