  1. No....bad idea.

It's too late to get a new QB into the system and expect them to get caught up with the offense.

The time to bring in a 'new' QB was 2 months ago when training camp was getting ready to start.

There is no sense in trading players / picks for a guy that will take weeks to learn the offense and get ready to go. Don't hurt the future, just for a slightly better chance to finish 8-8.

They'll need to ride out this season with Collins (and Painter -- once Collins get injured in a few weeks) and then take a new look at things once April comes along. At that point, they should know if Manning is 100% or if they have such a bad record that they'll be in a position to take Luck.

  2. Why not invest in the future of the franchise by playing Painter, so he'll be ready when Peyton retires?? Painter would play as good or better than Collins. No one will ever be able to fill Peyton's shoes, but let Peyton mentor Painter. Begin building the next Colts quarterback, and not wait until Peyton is gone to start looking. Collins may have more experience, but Painter has more potential.

thanks for the chuckle....Painter is not the QB of the future. I suppose if you're going to lose 34-7 it doesn't really matter if you play Painter or Collins as a loss is a loss. But please, most likely Painter will never be the 1st choice of the Colts or any other team.

If the Colts thought he was the QB of the future, why not play him (as he is working on his 3rd year in the system) vs Collins who has barely had 3 weeks in it??

  3. From what I saw, the O-Line did a horrible job most of the day in pass protection.

Collins isn't mobile, but there was little he could do give the protection he had.

My fear, is that Collins isn't going to live long with that O-Line and then it will be Painter's turn.

Once that happens, and it may be the case regardless of who the QB is.....Andrew Luck may find himself getting fit for a horseshoue hat to wear next Apri;.

  4. IMO -- unless things go REEEALLLY bad I dont see anyway the Colts are in a position to cut ties with Manning next Feb.

Even if he never plays another down, I'd expect him to go to camp next July and give it a go.

I am one that accepts the fact that there is at least a chance that he never plays again and don't expect him to play at all this season......however, I dont think that Manning (or the Colts) are going to be ready to write his career off in less than 5 months.

  5. You guys need to accept the fact that most likely, he's not playing this season. With 2 surgeries and no practice, him coming back this season is a long shot at best.

He really just needs to take the year off, hopefully get 100%, and then come back next year...and even then, this isnt an injury to mess around with.

While I fully expect him to come back, you have to realize that he has more then enough money and if there's a chance of further serious injury to impact his life there is not guarantee that he'll play again or even if he does that he'll be the same Manning we all loved watching play.

  6. It's nice to be optimistic, but he's not going to play. I dont seem him taking a snap just to continue the streak and he's had virtually no practice time. He's out, let's hope the D can step up and Collins can manage the game and make a few plays to help them win.

However, this would likely have been a tough game even with a healthy Manning playing. A loss won't mean the end of the world....

I think they can (and should) still beat the Browns (wk2) and Bucs (wk4). The Steelers game wk 3 was also going to be a very tough one.

Most likely -- even with Manning -- they would have been 3-1 (at best) after 4 weeks. If they can be 2-2 with Collins, I think we will still be in good shape.

  7. I would guess he will miss all of Sept. He's had vitrually no practice at this point, and wont for at least another week.

Once Oct roles around they'll probably decide if he's improved....if not, he'll have another surgery and be out for the season. If he's gotten better and fully participated in practice he'll probably be ready to start in early Oct.

I hope Collins can do well....just wish he had been in camp longer and gotten some game action with the 1st team offense.

  8. I think Painter stays until Manning proves that he is back and ready to start.

Once that happens, they should release Painter and fill the spot with someone that would contribute -- vs a 3rd string QB.

If, God forbid, Manning get's hurt again (or some how Collins) they can call Painter and bring him back. It's not like anyone else is going to pick him if the Colts release him.

  9. What do you expect Caldwell or Painter's teammates to say to the media? The truth...?!?!

Why it might be refreshing to see Caldwell come out and say..."Yeah, if Peyton doesn't play, the D better pitch a shutout, cause with the crappy play we've seen from Painter we'll be lucky to manage a FG." It's just not going to happen.

They all know that they would have to play a perfect game w/o Manning to beat Houston on opening day and hope that Painter manages to at least hand - off well and complete enough short passes to manage to put together a scoring drive or two.

  10. I don't doubt Manning will make every effort to be out there. Streak or no streak.

He know's the other QB's on the roster would have trouble winning the starting spots on a decent college team....and as such, if he's alive, he's going to give it a go.

If the team had a b/u that he believed in, he probably would still want to be out there...but would realize that one or two games doesn't a season (or career) make and hopefully would not have to rush things. He knows that given the guys on the roster today...if he doesn't play, they have virtually no chance of winning.

  11. You cant say what the Colts would do w/o Mannning unless you know what QB would be playing....

It's it one of the losers on the roster right now, they probably win 3-4 games at best.

If they bring in someone that has actually done something in the NFL and get them in camp TODAY -- so they have a few weeks to learn the offense -- they probably could win 7/8 games.

  12. The Colts best be darn sure that he's going to be ready to go on Opening day...

Even if he can start, you have to wonder how long it will take him to get in sync with everyone given he likely would have had very minimal practice time with the starters and if there will be any after affects of the neck surgery.

If he can go, then the b/u QB wont matter....but if he can't that's a problem as any game started by Painter will end with a Loss.

  13. We have this talk every pre-season and every year by week 2 when things count and realize we have much bigger holes than the back up QB spot we stop caring about it till the next pre-season where we pretend like it's the worst thing in the world.

except most years, Manning's status for opening day is not uncertain......

If Manning is healthy and ready to go, then whatever scrub is his back-up is much ado about nothing.

However...given the fact that it's almost certain Manning won't play in the pre-season his availabilty has to be questioned for opening day. In that case, the scrub back-up QB is a bit more important then in other years.

  14. Like i said before fans are mad at painter cause the colts didnt go undefeated. You should have pointed out that Sorgi only played when the colts were dominating and never against a beast of a defense like the jets. Its easy to say sorgi was a great backup when he wasnt put into Painter's situation, Painter is better hands down and you will see that come friday. Painter over Soggy all day.

    Painter's Pre-season Qb ratings are:

    2009 - 64.3

    2010 - 49.1

    2011 - 42.4

During those games he's completed 55% of his passes and thrown 1 TD vs 7 INT's. One might think that if he were so great and playing against the 2nd / 3rd team defenses of other teams he might not have had such crappy performances.

I hope you're right (but I doubt it) and Painter does great things Friday and the rest of the preseason and proves he's deserving of an NFL paycheck....cause I wonder if Manning will really be able to start on opening day.

  15. Sorgi was horrid, you ppl like Sorgi because he didnt stink up the colts chance for an undefeated season. The guy was like a 1yr starter with a weak arm and he look like a pizza boy.

Curtis on the other hand has a strong arm athletic compared to sorgi and was once considered to be a 1st round pick in his junior campaign. Ill take painter over sorgi all day... Kinda makes you wonder if he was that good of a backup why is he on the streets now.

    Are you related to Painter?

    Sorgi's 1st game action came as a rookie in 2004 - he went 17/29 -- 2 TD / 0 INT's and had a rating of 99.1. In his career, he went 99/156 (63.5%) and threw 6 TD's / 1 Int and has a career passer rating of 89.9. He had 1 fubmble.

Painter is his 2 (and hopefully last) reg season games as a Colt went 8 / 28 and threw 2 picks. His QB rating is 9.8 and he also fumbled twice.

So....in 128 fewer attempts he has doubled the career interception total of Sorgi and has a QB rating that you probably assume is a typo and also lost more fumbles.

Nobody is saying Sorgi was a good QB....but he's light years better than Painter.
