True. Folks here are not realizing that we'd be ponying the same or higher amount of money for homegrown talent of ours down the road at some point in time if we hit our draft picks right. With the cap space we have and not many draft picks to re-sign or extend this year or next, I would have had no qualms with the same deal made by the Colts for Lawrence, I truly wouldn't have. The money doesn't bother me, just the draft capital if we had to trade for him. If he was an UFA, yeah, sure count me in.

The draft capital is what most of the aforementioned, myself included, seem to be agreeing with.  Lawrence is the younger player, actually entering his prime, with experience in our DC's system.

Just thought I would offer some stats on the two:

Anyway, it is a moot point now, just glad Houston was "maybe" the consolation prize.

Sometimes I think to many people get to caught up in the trendy pics the media wants to flood airtime too, I for one could not believe at the time, we passed over Williams for James. We always seem to go with our gut, and beliefs, for what is the best for our team and it usually works out.  That's why I'm not getting stuck on certain players and just enjoy how it ends up playing out.

Exactly, Williams was the obvious pick according to the pundits.  Though Edge profiled better to Indy due to his familiarity with running out of the stretch in Miami.  Plus he also had far less mileage on his knees than Williams.  Plus some other issues that surfaced later.

First off.......  I am NOT saying the Colts will pick this kid

(I think that he is off the board when the Colts pick)

But...........  This is a future ALL Pro (IMHO) at a position that CB covets highly

The Colts had max protect last year with an extra tackle brought in

This kid can play that and is a top receiver as well..........

I fully expect a DL pick at 26 ........ but if this guy somehow slipped to 26 (or 34), it wouldnt surprise me if CB pulled the trigger

I agree and I just couldn't help myself, as I am a huge Mike Curtis fan!

There is a reason, not much has changed over the years, Didn't need too. When you create an iconic design you don't need to change it no more than you would take the Mona Lisa and later say, "Hey maybe she would be better with blonde hair". You admire the original for what it is. It has already survived the test of time, You just need the right players to fill that uniform and then believe me you will see the beauty.

    I couldn't agree more!

    Colts Fans,

Man, I just couldn't take anymore of the talk about Funchess, his drops, his speed, he's not a legit number two receiver etc.  I do live in NFC South country so I do see a lot of Panther games and always thought highly of Funchess so I went to all the video I could find and here are my humble conclusions on the guy.

    1. He catches almost everything with his hands, he let's very few balls get in on him and when he does that's when he has some trouble but this guy has very strong hands!

    2. He catches the ball in traffic extraordinarily well, I would go so far as to say 4.5/5.

2a. You could make the case he lacks separation speed but that's not necessarily what the tape shows.  More what the tape shows is a lot of              designed throws to Funchess no matter the coverage and Newton seemed to throw to him in traffic without hesitation, that to me speaks volumes.  The throws in traffic could be the reason for the drops, frankly, what I saw I would rate him well above the likes of Pierre Garcon as an example we can relate to.

    3. He can and will run every route.

    4. He plays faster than his 40.

    5. He high points the ball very well.

    6. I see a guys who's every bit of a number two receiver, in fact, he appears to be closer to a one than a three.

    7. He plays to his size (a lot of big WR's don't).

I would be very excited about Hilton, Funchess, Inman combo.  Ok to call me crazy.  I've been wrong before...I'll be wrong again!

Late in the Funchess discussion,   some new,  not originally known advanced stats surfaced...

Stats the Colts had but the basic public fan base did not.

Off the top of my head, the stats were these....

---  That when he ran his routes out of the slot and not out of the split end spot,  Funchess had a 100 percent catch rate.    No drops.

---  That when he ran his routes from the split end spot,  his drop rate was 10 percent,  not the 16 or 17 percent that tossed around here.

---  That on the two pass patterns that the Colts believe Luck throws best (outs and curls)  Funchess had an 80 percent catch rate.

These were the numbers that played heavily into how the Colts view Funchess.   Again,  it's a 1-year deal.    If he works out -- great for us.   We'll bring him back.    If he doesn't --- OK, we'll move on without him.

    Just some food for thought.....

Thank you both for this wealth of information!  I was glad with the signing and felt he could thrive in Indianapolis, and this extra information makes me even more excited for his prospects.

I still debate (in my mind), if that game was more satisfying  than the SB.

Bob Lamey saying;” INTERCEPTED, MARLIN JACKSON! MARLIN’S GOT IT!

    WE’RE GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL!

It still brings tears to my eyes!

It was more satisfying for me as Indy came from behind and finally beat New England when it mattered.  Good times!

Rogers was tendered by the Colts last month as a RFA second rounder. That means another team can offer him more than the 3M and give the Colts a second rounder if the Colts declined to get in a bidding war. Not sure if he signed the tender offer, but I doubt any team comes in swinging and willing to give up a second rounder for him.  So very likely he'll be here in 2019.

Cain is locked up and is a no brainer. Marcus Johnson was also tendered last month as an ERFA, which means he's locked up. Pascal has not been tendered (differing opinions here, but I can't find anything) so still a wildcard. Fountain is locked up until next year when he becomes an ERFA.

So with DF being signed, we have him, Deon Cain, Marcus Johnson, Daurice Fountain, T.Y. Hilton, Krishawn Hogan, Steve Ishmael, Jordan Veasy, and James Wright under contract... and likely to retain Rogers. I can see any of the bolded being let go, or pushed to the practice squad.

Guessing we're looking to draft a WR in the first 3 rounds since we haven't locked down Inman or Pascal (and letting Grant expire). Doesn't mean one or both may not be back. Just means we're taking our time and staying on plan.

Spotrac has him signed, I hope this helps.

I do think there was at least one or two more super bowl appearances with that team that Johnson had put together. Jones just couldn't stand that Johnson was getting the attention he deserved. IMO Johnson made the greatest trade in NFL history and struck lighting with that trade. In the end Johnson and the Cowboys ended up with 13 players after it was all added up.

That was an incredible deal for Dallas.  What a haul!

In another thread on another page,  poster @Doug Dew talked about what it would cost to move up.    And he did the math.    It was a good post,  but I think it's lost in that bigger discussion.    So, I thought it would be a good idea to bring his info here to a new and separate thread here on the Draft Page where more eyes can see it.

Currently, our pick 26 is valued at 700 Points.

If Ballard decides he has 4 picks in the first three rounds, so he has one extra to play with and he wants to target someone,  here is what it would cost the Colts to move up.

Pick 34 is valued at 560 points.     That would give us 1260, which comes out to Cincinnati's pick 11 at 1250 points.

Pick 59 is valued at 310 points.     That would give us 1010, which comes out to Carolina's pick 16 at 1000 points.

Pick 89 is valued at 145 points.     That woud give us 845 points, which comes out to Pittsburgh's pick 20 at 850 points.

To be clear,  teams are not bound to the draft board points value chart.   But most teams roughly follow this.    This is an approximation for what a trade might look like.    If we trade up,  I can see Ballard trading one extra pick.    A 2 for 1 deal.    But I do not see him trading a 3 for 1 trade and losing 2 picks.    That would not be a Ballard-like thing for him to do.

Anyway....   the props on this post go entirely to Doug.    He's basically the author.   I just summarized it here for what I hope is a larger audience.

Tip of the hat to DD!        :hat:

Excellent post!  This really breaks down the process very well and even the most pedestrian fan can understand it. Well done by you and Doug Dew.  Personally I hope Indy holds on to their picks as 4 picks in the top 89 is bound to bring in some fine talent!

Its very interesting, and clear that the Colts have a strategy BEFORE the draft

BEFORE the free agency period, I think that we would all agree we had holes at

    S, WR, OT, DE

In addition to our own resignings, (OT WEBB, )

    We filled

    S - Kendrick

    WR - Funchess

    DE - Houston

    OT - Webb (Resign)

    These ARE NOT ALL Pros.

But....... they give us depth that we dont have at key positions of need

They also make us a bit better than the team we ended the year with...... a playoff team that won 10 of last 12 games.

    Why is this important?

We can TRULY draft BPA in our draft

I hope people can see this strategy in the works .......

I agree, it truly seems as if it allows them to maximize their options in the draft.  Btw, Mike Curtis was a heck of a player!
