If I had to place my bets on it, I'd say best defensive player at No.13 and a QB at No.34 is what I am expecting from Ballard, to be honest.

I agree with this.  I think it provides them with a playmaker at 13 and a potential upgrade at 34.  I think they really like JB and would love to see him succeed.  I think drafting a QB at 34 puts pressure on him to improve or he will not be back, as long as the QB shows improvement and progress.  Also, if the QB at 34 is a dud, you did not waste draft capital on him and still got a playmaker early.

There should be some interviews the next couple days. I seen one with Love that will be posted later. When it’s up I will link it.

Thank you, I would love for this thread to be the center for all things Senior Bowl related.  Please post that link when you get it.

  3. So this is from Todd McShay on ESPN+ about what to watch for the 6 QBs at the Senior Bowl.  Thought it was interesting write up for each.  I highlighted the ones that seem to be discussed the most on the forum.

McShay: What to watch for from the six quarterbacks

Even without Joe Burrow, this is a talented senior quarterback group heading to Mobile. Justin Herbert headlines the signal-caller roster as a potential early first-rounder, but the class also includes College Football Playoff semifinalist Jalen Hurts and Pac-12 record-holder in passing yards in a season Anthony Gordon. Here's what I want to see from each QB this week.

    Justin Herbert, Oregon

Team: South | QB ranking: 3

Quite simply, Herbert is the best quarterback on the field at the Senior Bowl -- and he has to look the part. I'm watching for him to dominate after throwing for 3,471 yards and 32 touchdowns this season. The best players always find a way to stand out by the end of the week, and the 6-foot-6 quarterback needs to separate himself from the pack. Show off the big arm. Make some plays with that mobility. And find some rhythm and consistency throughout the week. Herbert has to make a statement.

    Jordan Love, Utah State

Team: North | QB ranking: 6

Can he handle the big stage? The fourth-year junior still needs some work processing in the pocket, and that shows up on the stat sheet: Love threw 17 interceptions this season. He has 6-foot-4 size, a live arm and the ability to extend plays with his legs. But while he had a decent showing in a losing effort at the Frisco Bowl (317 yards and three touchdowns), he has struggled most of the season in the spotlight, completing just 54.5% of his passes against a pair of ranked teams and throwing four interceptions to just one TD in those games. Love has to find composure amid national attention this week.

    Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma

Team: South | QB ranking: 9

I'll have a close eye on Hurts' accuracy this week. There's a lot of arm strength and athleticism in his game, but he relied on Lincoln Riley's offensive scheme to spring open receivers and mask some accuracy issues at Oklahoma. Even then, Hurts missed his share of open targets -- just watch the tape from the semifinal against LSU, in which he went 15-of-31 passing. Scouts will be watching how he hits his marks this week, especially when throwing into tight windows.

Additionally, his pocket poise will be key at the Senior Bowl workouts. Hurts is early to bail out often, and he really needs to speed up his processing and delivery. He accounted for 53 touchdowns this season, but how well he stands tall in the pocket and gets the ball out will be important to his NFL success.

    Shea Patterson, Michigan

Team: North | QB ranking: 16

Similar to Hurts, we need to see consistent accuracy from Patterson. The Ole Miss transfer has good arm strength and mobility, and he does a pretty decent job hitting his targets in the short-to-intermediate range. But he will throw off his back foot at times and falls off too many throws. And he is very erratic when throwing downfield. He completed 56.2% of his passes this season, which ranked outside the top 100 in the FBS, and that number dropped to 42.1% when throwing at least 15 yards downfield.

    Anthony Gordon, Washington State

Team: North | QB ranking: 8

The numbers on Gordon's season were eye-popping, closing the year with 5,579 passing yards and 48 touchdowns through the air. Both ranked second in the country to Burrow. The Washington State QB anticipates well on his throws, but does he have enough arm strength? Only 11 of his 493 completions came on throws at least 25 yards downfield.

    Steven Montez, Colorado

Team: South | QB ranking: 13

Montez needs to show he can be on time as a dropback passer. He tallied 2,808 yards for Colorado this season, but he still needs a lot of work with his footwork on drops. I'll be looking at how well he stays in sync with his wide receivers on timing drops this week.

  4. So I just listened to locked in Colts podcast and in the end they started talking about the Senior bowl and how much Ballard likes picking from it. How much he values  leadership and team captains. The host mentioned Love and Herbert being there. Kyle Rapoza, who was the guest, pointed out how much the Colts discussed Lamar Jackson later in the season. He somewhat mentioned to connect the dots and stated that they could also be looking at Jalen Hurts. He stated that they very much wanted an athletic QB. So Hurts, Love and Herbert are definitely in that mold.

    just something they mentioned.

  5. So my question is what happens if Herbert, Love and Tua are all gone by our 13th pick. What would you like to see the Colts do with the 13th pick.

Then the other question is what QB would you like to see them draft and when?

For me, if they are all gone by 13th, I’m taking a Javon Kinlaw or Derrick Brown or maybe a Ceedee Lamb if he dropped.

As far as a QB, I’m taking Anthony Gordon with the 34th pick. Outside of Herbert and Love, he is my favorite. Outside of him, I like Hurts at 44 or in the 3rd round.

  6. The Senior Bowl starts 1/21-1/23. There is a lot of players to watch. Please use this thread to discuss who you are excited about.

Once practices start we can discuss how they are looking.

I think we can all agree that pretty much all the QBs are of interest.

    Love

    Herbert

    Gordon

    Hurts

    Also some WR and TE

    Pinkney

    Pittman Jr

    Jennings

    Gandy-Golden

    Aiyuk

    Claypool

Cant wait to see them all.

You've clearly never watched the guy play outside of some highlights. JT Barrett was a much better college QB than Hurts, same read-option/poor passing QB, and he went undrafted. Lamar is going to be it. Teams aren't going to waste the time reinventing their offense for a gimmick player, who's play-style will be forced to change. Sure it will last a season or 2, just like we seen with Vick, Cam, RG3, but eventually, and quickly, defenses adapt and force them into being the QB's they aren't used to being.

I'll tell you what, I'll give you the first 5 rounds and I will take the last 2. If Jalen is drafted before the 6th, I'll change my avatar to that of Jalen.

    Wow. So aggressive. Lol.

I get what you are saying but with the recent success of more mobile QBs like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. I think people are gonna try to duplicate it. I just think some team will fall for him and overdraft him. I could be wrong but we will see.

He'll likely go way late, or undrafted, so I don't think we'll have to worry about that.

I actually don't think so.  I think with the success of Lamar Jackson (and the NFL being a copycat league), some team will overdraft him and probably take him the first round.

One read QB who holds the ball too long, locks on to receivers and is slow to make reads?

Don't we already have that guy?

I love how yet again this thread has tried to become about JB.

    in regards to your point.
    JB is 27

Jalen Hurts is 21- plenty of time to develop. Also he will get that chance with Frank Reich and Nick Siranni. Not bad people to learn from. Plus his running is helpful. He can use it as he learns and develops. Kinda like Russell Wilson and Lamar have done.

Side question. What if you can get Ceedee Lamb with 13 and then get Jalen Hurts with 34. They have an amazing connection. Thoughts?

  10. So the more I have been thinking about this the more I became interested in hearing what the forum thought.

I actually believe that, and I have no evidence, that Ballard may really like Jalen Hurts. You may ask why?

Hurts was ultra productive in his college career.

Hurts played for Saban at Alabama and learned how to carry himself like a professional.

Even after losing his starting spot, he stayed and supported Tua. When needed he stepped in and won the SEC title game.

He was named Captain of the Oklahoma team after transferring and earning the teams respect.

He then learned offensive football from the best offensive mind in college football, Lincoln Riley.

He then went on to complete 68.7% of his passes for 32 TDS and 8 INTS

He led OU to a Big12 Title and a CFP Appearance.

Even when OU got run out the building he carried himself in a way that showed maturity and confidence. Keep in mind Ballard was at that game.

    Career record as starter 39-3

He seems to check on the boxes that Ballard and Reich have for a QB, on and off the field. I also think he could develop into a very good QB.

    Thoughts.

My point is... whoever is your favorite QB in this draft, your position shouldn't be - oh well, doesn't matter if we miss on him, as long as we can get a DT in R1 and WR in R2...

And if your QB of choise is not worth a 1st or early 2nd pick, I kind of feel like he's probably not good enough anyways. To me, most R3+ QBs are just wild shots without much pressure for him to pan out. This is the type of shot you should be taking once you already have your franchise QB in the building, not relying on him to be your franchise QB of the future. That's why I think I would prefer Ballard not draft a QB at all if he doesn't like a QB early or if the QB he likes gets taken before our pick.

I guess my ultimate point is - if a QB you like is there in the first and you think he's worth that pick, you don't horse around with it. You take him. Ahead of a DT, ahead of a WR, ahead of any other position player.

I agree with most of this.  We all have our favorites.  I have come to settle into my top 3:

    Herbert, Love and Gordon

The thing for these guys is that they vary so differently in regards to draft position.

With Herbert, he would have to fall to you at 13.  If he is there, I would take him because he won't be at 34.

With Love, I am in the same boat except a little muddier.  I don't know if he will be there at 34, but he could be.

With Gordon, I am pretty sure he will be.  I have been on the boat with him that you take him at 34, your first pick of the second round.

It is all fun and we will see what happens in the next 3 months. In the end it is where Ballard has them ranked on his board and who is available at 13.  If he has Herbert as his QB, he will take him at 13 if he is there, same for Love.

Just for the record, when I make prospect comparisons to pros, and especially to all-pros, I mean those comparisons to be stylistic comparisons, rather than expectations of similar excellence. When I say Love looks like Mahomes, I don't mean "Love will have similar success as Mahomes". I mean, he plays in similar way, he has similar strengths and weaknesses, but there is no way to know if those will amount to the same level of production. There are just so many more things that go into how the player turns out to be in the league - his own determination and willingness to work on his craft and excel, his coaches and how he's developed, his surrounding talent, injuries... luck... There is just no way in hell to say with any amount of certainty that any player in the draft will become as good as what seems like a future HOFer in Mahomes. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't... maybe he settles somewhere below him... maybe he surpasses Mahomes. The point is that IMO he has the traits and physical talent to be something similar play-style wise. The rest will be up to him and his coaches in the league.

Completely understand your point here. My contention is not with you, but as soon as people hear he is like Mahomes, odds are their next thought is that he will be the next Mahomes.

Going for bargain bin QBs should not be an option. It's so weird to me seeing people prefer getting a DEFENSIVE TACKLE over a QB... And settling for the 7th QB just so you don't pick QB in R1... It's weird

I will agree. I have been on record about sticking with JB for one more season but have started to come around on drafting a QB and, like Ballard, have several that I like.

Where we might disagree is the bargain bin QB/7th best. We don’t really know where they will all grade out. Right now, I would agree, most boards are

    Burrow

    Tua

    Herbert

    Love

    Eason

    Fromm

    Gordon

    Hurts

But we will also know way more after next week, Senior bowl. All of this boards favorites minus Eason will be there.

Also contrary to belief I do actually really like Love. I made a point to watch his bowl game from beginning to end and came away highly impressed. But I will also admit I had never heard of him until word leaked that Ballard had, reportedly, gin to see him in person. What scares me the most about him, outside of decision making, is everyone saying he is the next Mahomes. There is no next Mahomes. I am scared that Ballard really likes him and may be forced to take him at 13 because that comparison will push him up the draft boards.

Finally, what has shocked me the most is that everyone is either picking Gordon or Love and no one is licking Herbert. Just curious, why?
