  1. Redskins fans here.

I don't mean to destroy your hopes, but RG3 will win rookie of the year, hands down. It's not even close. I know it, the experts know it, and deep down inside you guys know it.

He is sitting at a QBR rating of 104.2. That not only leads all rookies, but it leads THE ENTIRE NFL. Yes, ahead of Tom Brady, ahead of Peyton Manning, ahead of Aaron Rodgers. Maybe if it was after 3 weeks, some would say that's a fluke, but its Week 14 of the NFL, with 3 games left. That means he has been playing GREAT football, week-in week-out on a CONSISTENT basis.

It seems to me the only argument you have is "but Luck has Colts in the playoffs". Andy Dalton got into the playoffs last year. So what? Getting into the playoffs doesn't mean squat. You have to win it all to get respect. Ask Andy Reid. Maybe if you guys won the division title and had a first round bye, that would be a MUCH more impressive resume for Luck's rookie year. But as a wild-card, with a cupcake schedule? Please.

Your other argument is, "but he has X amount of game-winning drives". Those are situations he PUT HIMSELF in with all those INTs. Again, with those cupcake teams you've played, you've handed them the game and they STILL let you guys comeback. If Luck throws 3-4 INTs against NFC East teams, I guarantee he will be BURIED with no hope of a comeback. Again, I re-iterate, he has had a CUPCAKE SCHEDULE and STILL throws 18 interceptions? That's not RoY material.

I understand RoY doesn't make one's career, but Year 1 goes to RG3, not Andrew Luck. Sorry.

Oh yea, throw in RG3's 720 rushing yards and 6 TDs for good measure.

Alex Smith also has a very high QB rating, and he isn't even playing. You have to consider the system. Most QBs will look good when they have the #1 rushing offense in the NFL and throw checkdowns most of the day.

  2. That like saying could there be a tie between Obama and Romney. It was a foregone conclusion who was going to win Rookie Of The Year when, after the first game, John Madden proclaimed RG3 as "the best player in the NFL". The media wants him to win, he is in a very QB friendly offense, and therefore has put up very good numbers. No way they give it to Luck.

  3. Not sure the beatdown of Castonzo. Very view Left Tackles in the NFL can hold out the defenses best pass rusher for the amount of time these longer routes are taking. What I find so interesting about OLine is that much depends on QB and play calling. If Peyton Manning where on the team with that offense. Castonzo would be consider a very good LT. Because Manning simply would get rid of the ball so fast it wouldn't matter. How many lineman did the Colts have that became free agents, signed to other teams, and did very little or nothing at all?

Seriously, I think Castonzo will be very good one he gets a little more help and he doesn't have to block for 6 seconds on every play.

  4. Our best Oline will be Castonzo, Reitz, and maybe Shipley. The rest have to go I am not even sure about Reitz. Hopefully bring in a few via free agency and the draft.

This year, I think Castonzo, Reitz, Shipley, Linkenbeast, and Justice would be the best setup. Just not Seth Olsen. Please not Seth Olsen. PLEASE!!

  5. Not that it matters who we want to win, but I still think it is a mistake to want the Patriots to win. The last thing we need is for every game to have to go through NE. It is pretty much a guarantee that they would get to the Super Bowl. I honestly would rather have the Colts get in as a wild card team and play Baltimore then win a division and give NE home field advantage.

  6. As hard as it is to say it, Belichick is so much better than any other coach in the NFL, it is ridiculous. It always amazes me how he can completely change the teams strategy around from game to game, drive to drive. Like tonight they are playing single coverage on Johnson and somehow it is working. And their offense is just destroying the Texan defense. All without the help of video recording the Texan practice.

Taking a line from Anchorman "I hate you Bill Belichick, But, darnit, do I respect you!"

  7. I know in a perfect world the Colts will win out and win the division. But, let's be honest, that is not likely to happen. Therefore, I want Houston to win tonight (although they are getting killed). Because I cannot stand the chance the Patriots might get to the Super Bowl. So in case the Colts don't make it to the Super Bowl, I want NE to have to go to Houston and play them there. Otherwise, you can pretty much pencil NE in another SB.

  8. I actually hope, however unlikely, that Arians gets a head coaching job next year and then Pagano brings in someone running more of a west coast offense. Basically, run what the 49ers do. I realize we don't have the personnel right now, but I think in the long run that will be how Luck is more successful. As I stated before, the NFL is setup now to where most teams take away long passes and give up short passes. I don't see why we play right into their hands. That says something for Luck's ability. I think any other rookie QB in his situation would crumble.

  9. It is unfortunate that Carter has the fumble problems. Because I absolutely LOVE his running style. He is a north-south runner that almost always picks up yards. And he has far more speed than he is given credit for. He is like a poor mans Michael Turner less the fumbles.

  10. 10 guys within 7 yards of us again? I'm gonna be sore. I know I'l just flip it Reggie, now that I see he is now also running some of these short routes...

Good observations. However, I would love to see the breakdown of how often that happened. Secondly, we don't know the read progression. Luck is mostly throwing the ball long. So maybe Luck is the one choosing to go long all the time, but my gut feeling is that the underneath guys are the 3rd or 4th receiver on the patterns.

  11. For those not on the side of BA...did you actually watch the game yesterday? The second Luck's back foot hit his drop he had pressure. You cant say the issue is deep routes when there is no time to throw. Also you ever notice Luck's eyes are looking past the short routes and always looking deep?

Lastly for those comments about certain formations telegraphing plays...what ever happened to saying "we are going to run the ball, try to stop us"!

I don't know if it is that we are on the side or not of BA. I think it is fair to give an opinion on what you think players or coaches are doing without having to side against them.

And I actually did watch the game. I watch all of them. Sure, Luck got tremendous pressure. But that is more reason to call some other types of plays. Throw a few screens to slow the pass rush down a little. Do one of Mannings signature plays where he got the snap and immediate hit Clark over the middle. More play action fakes to at least get the defense thinking more.

I am just questioning where that type of offense can work successfully long term in an NFL where so many teams concede short passes with the idea that eventually something will go wrong, but defend long. Nothing against BA.

  12. Well, Bruce Arians has been Peyton Manning's, QB coach, and an O coordinator for Ben Roethlisburger and cuurently HC/O Coordinator for Andrew Luck. He might even be courted for a HC job next season on another team next year. All the while all the real experts hash out what he really should do here on the Colts fan forum. ;)

“If you listen to the fans, you’ll be sitting with them soon enough.” Buddy Ryan, Brian Cashman, and Bill Polian.**

Good point. However, Norv Turner was the offensive coordinator for the great Dallas offense. ran the Chargers high scoring offense, and has been an NFL head coach three times. I doubt anyone would consider him a top notch coach.

Something I always respected about Don Shula is that he played to the strength of his team. When he has Csonka, Kiick, Morris, and Griese they were a running team. When he had Marino, it was airing it out. I know Arians has been a successful coach. I just question if what he is running is to Lucks strengths.

  13. Great Topic and great post....

Of course, the big theory says BA is the one who got us here - and we certainly have to honor that - but I think it has pretty much been the talent of Luck with a big dose of LUCK.

I do agree on many points - what makes me the craziest is when they run to set up the play action on first and second down, then on third down go to an empty backfield, completely nullifying the play action they were trying so hard to set up.

If they just keep a running back in backfield position it at least creates a little mystery about what they might be doing, and sets up the opportunity for the fake. I will never understand this....

I guess BA just thinks, hey - it's ok if they know what we are doing - they still have to stop it.

Only thing I can think of...

Good point. Too often the play is telegraphed Like you mentioned, the empty backfield gives away the pass. But also when the bring in a jumbo package to run, there is little change anything else can happen.

Look what the threat of the run does for RGIII. On pretty much every play you never know if he is going to hand off, throw, or run himself. Hesitation kills defenses

  14. I love a deep shot in a play. You never know when it can result in a cheap touchdown due to a broken coverage. I do not like 3+ 20 yard routes without an outlet/hot route. It's asking for your QB to be hit.

The OL that we currently have would look exponentially better if they were blocking in a WCO.

Completely agree. One of the reasons Manning was so seldomly sacked is that the route trees were much shorter so he held the ball a much shorter time.

My favorite era of the Manning Colts was around 2003-2005. You never knew what to expect. You might get a run, short pass, or bomb. They set each other up. I would love to see that returned but even a stronger running game.

  15. If we keep the same Offense..... what would be the point of letting Arians go?? I think when he retires.... we get a WCO Coach so Luck can play in a system like how he did at Stanford. Where he'll excel....... when he gets a oline

I meant if by some miracle Arians get a head coaching job. I doubt it because of his age. But you never know.

  16. I don't know. This isn't the late 60s with Daryl Lamonica being the Mad Bomber. I love balanced teams that methodically move the ball down field. Sure, I love those long plays. But just as the Colts use to do with the the fake handoff on a stretch play, they need to set it up. Now down field on almost every play

  17. I know I will probably be hammered with that "we are 9-4", but I really wonder about Arians offense as a long term solution. I know he prefers longer chunks. The probably I see is that so many teams use some version of the Cover-2 defense to prevent passes downfield to give up short passes instead, Luck is often throwing right into where the defensive strength is. I am often surprise at how little short passes there are, other than an occasion WR screen. Also, with a horrid offensive line and Luck having to hold the ball longer, it makes for a gamble on every play. I just wonder if the Colts would be better playing more of the annoying dink and dunk offense like the Patriots, but airing it out from time to time. More like the Colts were when James was at his peak.

It just seems to me a feast or famine offense. Against a smart team like the Patriots, I think it will always be tough for this offense to play them because of the Patriot coverages.

What do you all think? And if Arians left and we had to bring in a new coordinator, would you want to keep the same offense?

  18. Yeah, I immediately felt better when Link came in. And he was doing very well for Justice because Justice was looking like Tony Mandarich at RT.

AQ definitely should get considered for starting Center because Satele was getting blown up all game.

In all fairness, Mandarich was very good on the Colts. Had he not had to retire because of a shoulder injury, I think he could have bee a Pro Bowl guard. I remember watching a game between the Colts and Packers and Mandarich was playing right tackle. He completed negated Reggie White, reversing what happen to him before going against White.

  19. I am a Houston fan tomorrow night. I agree that if the Texans lock up the division, they may rest their starters. Plus, I think the Colts best matchup in the playoffs is Baltimore. If we have to play Denver, that will be rough. So if New England loses it helps the Broncos get higher seeded.
