So given that is how you feel, what would you think if people called you names for that attitude?

To the bolded, people are acting like Collins did not take that into consideration.  Maybe he didn't want to play in a cover 2.  he knows the Redskins well, maybe he wanted to play in that organization.  Maybe he didn't chase the money, maybe the Colts offered him more but he'd rather play for the Redskins.

I was responding to your comment that the only factor for you is the money.  I never said anything about why Collins made his decision.  I have no idea what factors he used.  I just think anyone that is only looking at the money is missing a whole bunch of stuff.

In any job:  A good boss can make a lame job pretty good, while a bad boss can ruin the best job.  For some people they also think income is the primary indicator of success.  For others they see many other factors that impact their definition of success.

I have been in situations where I could chase the money or go with what I thought was better for me.  My better choices have been where I didn't chase the money.

Just my opinion based on my history.

    :)  Yup.

In the NFL, only one team wins the SB every year, it would be stupid for players to use that as a primary consideration when signing a contract.

I would disagree in any profession.  I would take into account things like mgmt style of owner and GM, coaches, team mates, etc.

Absolutely... The player should always look for what's best for them.

So you are saying what is best for them in more money.  I just don't agree.

Tj Hockenson could be BPA by a wide margin on Ballard's board come April for all anyone knows... Is tight end a need right now? Not so much compared to pass rush and receiver... But no one is going to complain come September when ole T Hock is catching td's with Ebron every week.

Right - we do focus on need.  I think that is only natural.  We see weaknesses in the team week to week and hope we will find someone to upgrade those positions.

But if BPA drives the draft then we are getting quality guys.  That is the most you can ask for.  We can all debate whether player X was the best player ahead of player Y and we all know sometimes guys work out and sometimes they don't.

The real goal is having the best scouts so we have an edge determining BPA compared to other teams.

All this speculation about what Ballard will do is interesting but kinda silly. Ballard will do what is best for the Colts in all his evaluations. It is one thing to be guided by general principles - such as building through the draft - but quite another to blindly follow rules - like never overpay for extreme talent. These are not simple, black and white decisions, but are complex shades of gray. That's why he gets paid the big bucks.

Very true - these decisions are all shades of gray.  But I don't think anyone said he would blindly follow rules.  I do think he would look at extreme talent similar to other less talented guys.  For example I don't think he would bring a guy like Terrell Owens and pay him as the #1 receiver in the league.  I am not saying that anyone did - just saying I think Ballard is a little more disciplined in his approach.

And I think if he pays big bucks for an extreme talent I am sure he would think he is still getting a good value.

they all say stuff like that, somebody is going to sign the big names though

Somebody will.  And if the guy fits with our team/culture I would expect Ballard to pursue.  If Ballard doesn't feel the guy will fit - regardless of how talented he is - I don't think he will risk screwing up the build process.

Interesting interview.  One comment that stuck out to me was made with about five minutes left. I think it was about a particular FA that he can not comment on.  I couldn't hear the question.  He said something to the effect of even though we already have a good player at a position but we have the opportunity to bring a player in at that position that could put us over the top they will.  I guess that leaves the door open to a lot of possibilities.

I think you need to keep a statement like that in context to the rest of the rules/guidelines that Ballard follows:

    1. Don't expect the Colts to overpay

    2. Don't expect the Colts to get a guy who doesn't fit in the locker room

    3. Don't expect the Colts to get a guy who isn't committed to the team

    4. Don't expect the Colts to pass up improving at a position if the right guy is available (assuming it works within 1 - 3)

I'm sure there are other rules/guidelines he follows but that is what jumped in my head.

    Yeah, neither do I.

The second part is great, the first part doesn't impress me.

Can't say the first part impressed me when I first read it.  But as I thought about it the point is during the game remember they are the enemy.  He didn't say to be a poor sport, to trash talk, spit on, etc.  He just said "don't talk to...".

That actually doesn't bother me at all.

  8. For a rookie who didn't play that position I think he did an amazing job.  He had to hold his own against some pretty tough pass rushers, and although he did make mistakes I think that is to be expected.

A few of those where he didn't force the edge rusher deep enough should be a point of emphasis for him.  I can see where that could be an issue if you are concerned about getting beat inside.  That is something he can improve.

Add a full off season to improve technique and become more comfortable and I think we have a winner.  I think it is possible he could be much better in season 2.

A lot to be said for liking your bosses, your co-workers, where you live, and a winning environment. Happy for him and us.
That was a nice check to catch so he can plant some roots and relax about is near future.

Right - money is only one factor in making decisions.  Guys who base their entire decision on the money miss some really important points.  But sometimes that knowledge only comes with experience.

Surely that’s for the entire season. :woah:

For you season ticket holders, maybe you can clarify. I looked at season tickets going into 2018, and it was about $900 per ticket. So it would be about $1800 for 2 tickets for the entire season. Is that how it works?

That's what I was thinking but it sounds like a pretty good deal.  If you go to all 10 games (website said it was for 10 games) that's $75 a game which seems pretty cheap for an NFL game.

This discussion screams for a good FA wide receiver. I hope they grab one.

That would be reasonable.  The main point here is a good FA wide receiver.  Doesn't need to be the best/most expensive guy out there.  A solid performer with good hands.

If we go that way and then focus on the D -line early in the draft that sounds very encouraging.

But we will see what Ballard has in mind.  So far he is doing a pretty nice job of building this team from the inside out.  It is important to remember that all of the high scoring teams were shut down this year in the playoffs.  A team has to have the ability to win low scoring games because they will happen.  If you can't win the line of scrimmage - on both sides of the ball - you will struggle to win low scoring games.  Actually you will struggle to win any game.

Force? They have sold out every game for 10 years in a row!

From my perspective the force is against the will of American fans.  The owners want to expand because it is about money.  But the majority of American fans feel like it is being rammed down our throats.  I can say if I was a fan holding season tickets and my team lost a home game I would feel like I got this forced in me.

Ps for those of you who, like me, are fans of nfl and football (UK edition), this is amazing (sound on):

That was pretty awesome.  Certainly made me grin.  I think soccer (AKA football to the rest of the world) has it right by having different leagues in different regions.  I think they figured out trying to have one league span over too much geography just doesn't work well.

Meaning what?  That the game is already too long?

In my opinion - yes.  Too much wasted time.  Too much time on commercials, too much time between plays, too much time on reviews, too much time for official huddles.

But just my opinion.  I would like to see a game completed in 2 to 2.5 hours.

For the most part I believe this is the case.  I doubt it was league directed  but it seems clear to me that the officials decided to let the players decide the game and in doing so with the no PI call the officials actually decided it.

There has been much talk about making PI a reviewable call in the last few days.  I don't think that is the answer because where does the line stop on judgment calls.  And it seems the game could really start to drag.  The solution for me is an emphasis on a penalty is a penalty regardless of the time of the game or the importance of a game.

Sorry man, that ship has sailed.

  16. I wouldn't really mind if they let all of the WRs that played this year go except TY and Inman.  Feels to me any of the others could be easily replaced.  Very average.

Would like to see those 2 guys, see Cain get a shot and any new guys.
