  1. Might not have had a first or second rounder, but look at the players they got in FA.

Curtis Lofton, David Hawthorne, Ben Grubbs, Brodrick Bunkley...really good players. I still think they'll make the play offs. Remember, this a team playing with a chip on their shoulder. Winning the SB in their own back garden would be a big 'two fingers up' to Goodell.

  2. Any comparisons you've seen or would like to make?

List of ones I have seen:

Andrew Luck: Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers

Coby Fleener: Greg Olsen, Rob Gronkowski

Dwayne Allen: Brandon Pettigrew, Chris Cooley, Jason Witten, Heath Miller

T.Y. Hilton: DeSean Jackson, Percy Harvin, Davone Bess

Josh Chapman: Ahtyba Rubin, Jurrell Casey

    Vick Ballard: Chauncey Washington

Chandler Harnish: Dan LeFevour, Tim Tebow

Should be interesting to compare their careers to how people see them in terms of current NFL players.

  3. Olly... not to nitpick, but don't you think you went a little heavy on the word "whilst" in this post... I think that is a one time per post word, just to keep from seeming pretentious... some of those should have been replaced by while, where, whereas, or given... I pretty much agree with the grades, though. gj

5 times in an almost 2000 word piece? Hmm, okay then...

  4. so is paying a defensive end 14 million dollars at 32 years old with one year left on his deal to play linebacker for the first time, bottom line I get the offensive draft strategy Fleener was a good pick, Allen good pick, Hilton not so much because we could have gotten Ta'amu with that pick instead and with our next pick instead of drafting Chapman (who when healthy is pretty dang good) we could have drafted Brandon Washington, I would have packaged Freeny and Mathis both in a deal, why? because neither have played in 3-4 and are not linebackers, they still have a couple good years left in them, why spend them learning a new position on a rebuilding team. we couls have gotten more picks if we packaged them in a deal and who knows what we could have got for both, but I have actually moved on and time to make the best out of the situation we got....and can ya tell me why we drafted a 4th string quarterback cause I have no idea

Nobody wants them! We tried to trade Freeney and nobody would take him. Most people love our draft except for you, seemingly. We had our eyes on Casey Hayward and Asa Jackson and just missed out on them. They clearly felt that the value wasn't there in the position after that. They're employed to be scouts, we're not. I trust their board and they've picked some pretty good players. And Chapman is probably better than Ta'amu in my opinion! This is a rebuild, it's not going to take one draft. It'll take next year's draft and probably the year after that too. Just have patience and let's see how the guys do this year. Pagano and Manusky are experienced defensive coaches, they know what they're doing.

  5. It was a nice write-up.

A quick note on the Justin Chapman review, lack of height is actually an asset for a 3-4 NT in a lot of ways. Being low to the ground with 310-340 pounds of bulk makes a guy extremely hard to get under and move off the point of attack. Being taller has it's advantages too, mostly in that it correlates to wingspan and reach is never a bad thing, but height tends to be a more desirable asset in 3-4 DEs than in NTs. A lot of the best pure 2-down, 2-gap noses who have played the game fit that same short and squat (6'2" or under, 310+ pounds) profile. You mentioned Hampton but I'd also throw in Kelly Gregg and the indominatable Vince Wilfork as shinging examples of the kind of player I'm talking about.

If you guys end up running more of a 1-gap scheme then it would be easy to point to Aubrayo Franklin as a good example of what a guy Chapman's size can be capable of.

Thanks a lot for that! Still learning aspects of the game so this will help a lot, thank you!

  6. QB: Luck, Stanton, Harnish

    RB: Brown, Carter, Ballard

    FB: Gronkowski

WR: Wayne, Collie, Avery, Hilton, Brazill

    TE: Fleener, Allen, Eldridge

    OT: Castonzo, Justice, Linkenbach, Anderson

    OG: Reitz, Ijalana, McGlynn, Olsen

    OC: Satele, Shipley

    NT: Chapman, McKinney, Johnson

    DE: Nevis, Redding, Moala, Mathews

OLB: Mathis, Freeney, Fugger, Hughes, Hickman/Addison

    MLB: Angerer, Conner, Edds, Harvey/Freeman/Galippo?

CB: Powers, Thomas, Rucker, Pellerin, Fenelus/Johnson?

    FS: Bethea

    SS: Zbikowski, Caldwell, Lefeged

    K: Vinatieri

    P: McAfee

    LS: Overton/Snow

    Is this about right?

  7. and we still need a defensive tackle, Im sure Ta'amu will be out of the running for that by the time our next pick rolls around

Even if we don't get one, we can manage with McKinney + Antonio Johnson for one year. Could we manage with Eldridge for one year? Hmm.

  8. Can I just say, these are some of the cornerbacks available that I like.

Leonard Johnson, Chase Minnifield, Brandon Boykin, Josh Norman, Alfonzo Dennard (character concerns), Omar Bolden, Shaun Prater, Coty Sensabaugh. Keith Tandy is still there too, and he visited with us. I doubt all of these are going in the fourth round, given who is still available in other positions.

  9. Hmm. Whilst I'd have liked Defense...

It's good that we've put weapons around Luck NOW. We're not going to win many games now anyway, so why spend every pick on D? Pagano + Manusky are experienced Defensive coaches. I'd anticipate our D looking like:

    Bethea - Zbikowski

    New Cornerback -------------- Powers

    Freeney - Angerer - Conner - Mathis

    Moala - McKinney - Redding

    And our offense:

    Wayne - Allen - Castonzo - Reitz - Satele - Ijalana - Justice - Fleener - Collie/Hilton

    Luck

    Brown

I genuinely don't think it's that bad. We have to draft a corner and I'm hoping a guy like Leonard Johnson makes it to Round 5, but I think we could be in worse shape.
