Thank you. I actually wonder how many people have actually watched Edmunds tape. Anyone who has watched him knows that he’s a beast in the run game who already has good instincts. He routinely anticipates where the ball is going and meets a lot of RBs immediately after the handoff. That’s why he has 33 career TFLs. Anyone who says he doesn’t have instincts or that they’re poor, hasn’t watched any tape.

I hate when people accuse others of not watching tape because they disagree.  I've watched every available play of Edmunds and to say he has good instincts is crazy in my mind.  They aren't Malik Jefferson bad but they're honestly not that far off.  Of course he has splash plays and production against the run, he's always attacking the line of scrimmage whether its actually a run or not.  He's a guesser, so naturally he'll guess correctly half the time and look amazing.  This is why there is no consistency to his game, he is not an instinctual player in the least at the moment.  If you are taking him you are banking on him to develop his instincts, which is a very dangerous game to play.  Being 19 does not make that any less true.

This is not to say he does not have many redeeming qualities, because he does.  But I just don't get how someone can argue he has good instincts at this point in time.

  2. His instincts and processing are trash right now compared to Roquan's.  Seriously, watch their tape back to back.  It is night and day.  Though Edmunds did seem to improve in this area towards the end of the year.

I don't really want a player who COULD be special so long as they develop.   There are plenty of safer bets to choose from at 6.  If we trade down to 11 or 12 and he's still there, I'd be much more willing to take the gamble.  I just worry Ballard will get enamored with his elite traits and will take him over superior players.

  3. Smith is a an absolute stud. Easily the best LB in this class, imo.

The size thing is no issue to me... Compare his tape to Edmunds' and you'll see that Smith has significantly more "pop" behind his pads when tackling, despite the weight differential. I think this is due to his exceptional ability to diagnose plays and be in the correct spot to make the stop. He always looks to be in position, whereas as Edmunds uses his long arms to grab offensive players from a position of weaker leverage.

Smith can stop and turn on a dime... He is so so good at reacting to a ball carrier's cut and making a strong tackle where lesser LBs would have been juked out of their shoes. It is a special quality and very rare.

I like Edmunds in the sense that he could eventually drop down to add another pass rusher on obvious passing downs, making him a true 3 down player, but I think the hype train has gone off the tracks if people think he's worthy of a top 10 pick with his obviously raw tape... Even Edmunds' highlight reel shows areas where he needs to improve. He's only 19, which means that he will probably be able to fix a lot of his issues, but it is speculation, at this point, to say that he will ever be as good as Smith is right now.

Yup, Smith's tape blows Edmunds' out of the water.  Counting on physical freaks to reach there potential is a pretty good way to find yourself with a huge bust on your hands.  If we took him I would not weep because he could be amazing, I am not willing to take that risk though.  Hopefully Ballard isnt either.

but I don't think there's a single person anywhere that characterizes the selection of Edmunds as a "role of the dice".    Too much production there for him to be a role of the dice or boom or bust.

Man you and your hyperbole lol.  I'm not sure who you are reading because the consensus is that Edmunds is unpolished, lacks instincts, guesses way too much, but has unlimited potential at the same time.  Just turn on some youtube cutups, you'll see that he is not polished at all.  In college, being an athletic freak is enough to rack up crazy production.  As we've seen a million times, that isnt enough in the NFL.  If you're taking him at #6, you're counting on him to become what he has the potential to be, not what he is now.  That's pretty much the definition of a roll of the dice.  Some GMs are willing to gamble when we are talking about someone who could easily become an all pro.  I'm more hesitant.

Shive explained it pretty well above.  I also suggest you watch this video:

Basically, he's always trying to make the splash play rather than relying on instincts and playing with discipline.  As a result, he often misses coverage assignments or leaves gaping run lanes.  This of course is all teachable stuff, and he's only 19 so one wouldnt expect him to be a finished product yet.  That's why I wouldnt be upset with taking him, I just think there are better options.

  5. He's so fast of the ball it hurst.  I hate puns.

We released Hankins because we are looking for guys like this.  He fits our new scheme to perfection.  Some think he could fall to 36 but I don't see it happening unless teams get scared with the heart stuff.  But he's relatively scheme specific so there's a chance he could slip a bit.

From the conversation about #6 and how many QBs go of the board beforehand, it's pretty obvious that they have 3 guys in particular that they have their eye on.  I think we all know who those three are.

I've kinda been preparing for a pick out of left field, but he sure didn't make it seem that way here.

A Buckeye fan recently said he doesn't play up to his athletic ability.  A step down from previous Buckeye corners. Pass.

He's a step down from Lattimore but who wouldnt be.  He's better than Conley and worthy of a top 15 pick at minimum.  That said I'm not sure about his fit considering we will be playing much more zone now.
