It isn't an argument, it was a question. I tried to word this poll and question very carefully as to not confuse, but it seems I have. Perhaps to some, there is no difference in importance, but rather other factors....all good.

No there is no confusion I believe the fault lies in my ability to convey my opinion within the confines of the question.  I brought up the previous post because I was directly replying to the conundrum of where blame lies within an organization in respect to the scenarios you displayed.

As far as for your original topic the most important aspect of a franchise you need to have success (and it being completely binary as you have put it) I'd say would be player development.  Drafting and free agency mean nothing if you cannot develop the talent you bring in.  With that said again in a completely binary sense then drafting comes next as the ability to bring in moldable talent must be the next tier of importance.  Last on the list would be play calling and schemes.  Talent can perform if it is developed despite play calling.  They may not be effecient but it shouldn't be held in a higher tier than the other 2 factors.

    Good question!

Thanks all for replying. The results are exactly what I expected....many different opinions. So often fans grade a GM by their draft selections, coaches by their w/l's, but how much can a coach do with the wrong guys for a scheme...or what can a GM do if the coaches are properly developing the players he selects?

Eh that's a needless argument.  In football there is no chicken or the egg argument in reality.  The GM is at the crux of the entire operation.  If he is drafting players for the scheme that the coach he employed is running and the coach isn't developing it's the GMs fault for not having the correct coach.

This is a big reason why (while I don't agree with everything Ballard has done) I have more hope for him than I ever did Grigson.  Mainly because there is a clear and coherent vision and his steps all have some type of logic in respect to that vision.

The best teams have a common thread.  There is a vision in place by the GM and there are coaches in place that understand and can develop towards that said vision.  The rest is just added pieces.  You do not (and I repeat as this is not commonly shared) YOU DO NOT have to be amazing at drafting to be successful in the NFL.  Utilization of free agency can very well be done as long as your approach to free agency follows the common mantra of the vision of the GM (see the Patriots).

  3. What I want is for this game to be like the Broncos and Cowboys game from a few years back that ends in a score of like 48-42 and begins the interconference rivalry of Luck and Wentz.

But back to reality it'll be like 23-20 plus or minus 5 with the colts squeaking out a win against a depleted team and a rusty QB.

  4. Oh boy the browns are for real now.  I don't understand why everyone doubts Mayfield the kid is just flat out a winner and proves everyone wrong at every level.  The NFL better watch out the Browns have a legitimate QB now.  He may never be top in the league but he's good enough to take a good roster like the Browns really really far.

Maybe I’m wrong then because those names you mention don’t even ring a bell.  How do you know they are great if they have never played in the right system and produced ?

Ah it's hard to argue against this because the basis of your argument is off ...  TJ Watt was AFC defensive player of the week multiple times as a rookie.  Bud Dupree I'll give you that he's more just me based on his athleticsm that I watched coming out of the draft years back.  Joe Haden is a known commodity and pro bowler and Artie was a first round pick...  That's not mentioning Cam Heyward who is widely regarded as a top 5 DT/DE in the AFC and Ryan Shazier who was regarded as the best linebacker in football before his injury.... I'm not even a Steelers fan and I know these names.

It’s not an odd critique. They won Super Bowls with Tomlin. The issue is they used to have Lebeau and they drafted stars on defense.  Haven’t been the same since.

But you said the GM hasn't prioritized the defense which I don't think that's true given how many resources they have put into that side of the ball.  They won Superbowl with Tomlin with a dated scheme that had it's last hay day.  That's a coaching issue not a GM issue.

Lebeau was fading already that isn't the issue, it's the Tomlin effect on his DBs.  For all of the stars and talent they have they play tons and tons of zones and don't cater to the players they currently have.  They no longer have a game changing safety nor below average corners.  If they play press and force the QB to read a deeper route TJ Watt and Bud Dupree would be sack leaders by now.  But instead they play it super safe with corners 10-15 yards off coverage with an athlete in Artie Burns and a corner like Haden that is just a waste.

  7. 42 minutes ago, LockeDown said:

It doesn’t matter. In the end, their GM has decided offense is more important than defense and I don’t think they win another Super Bowl until they change that.  In fact, they can’t seem to get to the SB anymore.

    This is an odd critique?

The GM in Pitt has prioritized the defense immensely...  The last 6 drafts have had a defensive player taken in the first round.

IMO the issue in Pitt isn't the GM nor the players its the coaches.  The defense they run is a dated scheme that needs to get with the times.  They need to empower the premium athletes they have in the front 7 instead of try and always prevent the big play.  Plus Tomlin doesn't seem to be the coach to maximize the talent they have.  That is why they always lose to NE.  Brady chews that zone scheme every time and they are so risk adverse its  such a waste with the talent they have.

If they withdraw the franchise tag, to do a trade, there isnt a set compensation

It appears that the problem is the amount guaranteed from the Steeler's contract is whats is his issue, IT appears that they are guaranteeing 2 years... I say guarantee Bell for 3 Years, at 1.5 Mil more per year (4.5 Mil more)

He has been healthy enough to gain over 1250 yards 3 out of 4 years and has caught over 75 balls 3 out of 4 years.....  Yeah..... He cant even make it on the field.... wait .......to respond to you....LOL, LOL.....  See how stupid that looks?

Im just here to post an sometimes incorrect opinion... not perfect... just an opinion

What off the field issues?  I live in Texas, I dont see local Pittsburgh reports.... are there some that I missed ok... let me see them

Pro football is a business..... These guys dont get these big paychecks for their whole life......  HALF of all Pro football players are bankrupt after 5 years...... If I am in the league (I was WAY too slow to play college football)... I would be looking for the best deal I could get.   He played under the tag last year........ Why should he have to keep doing it?.... I would hold out as well

C'mon...... what are you smoking?....... EXACT type of production??  You really lost me on that..... Are you REALLY comparing a 3 time Pro Bowl player, who PROBABLY will be HOF to our current RBs......???

To me...... if we could pull off a cheap trade........ (3rd round pick) the cost isnt that bad, for a guy that would seem to be a GREAT fit for this offense

First I assume you took offense to the "lol what statement" apologies a bad habit from Reddit.

His off the field issues stem from weed which he was suspended for and his insitence to be a rapper which by association is a gateway back to things he shouldn't be a part of.  His dedication to the game is also suspect seeing that last year after his "holdout" he didn't start looking like the previous runner until 4 games into the season.  He isn't committed to football and there is plenty of proof to that.

Yes we are getting the exact same production as Bell with the 3 backs we have.  You are inflating him into something he is not.  He isn't a burner and he isn't an exceptional runner.  He's a good runner with a very talented oline but his true prowess comes from being an elite blocker and catcher so you don't have to make subs at that position.  That is why he is elite. He isn't Gurley or even Zeke when it comes to running and we have the exact same production out of our 3 guys that we'd get having him without having the drama, without having the influence of this young team concerns, without paying a huge salary to a back who has already been pretty much used up.

He isn't a bad player.  In fact I'll admit he is an elite level player because of the package but he just simply isn't worth money nor draft picks especially for a franchise full of young impressionable kids and a new coaching staff.

Don't know anything about them though.

Drummond is an interesting find.  I don't care much for Shaw but he is probably the safest choice out of this bunch as he has actual game time experience.

Initially.......  I have to admit, the first time I saw this thread, I thought that this was another, of the endless, "Go get player "XXXX XXXXXXX" threads that we see constantly

I have to say.........  I am very much warming up to actually doing a reasonable deal for Bell

Right now, He can get half of the franchise money if he shows up by week 10 (If I read this right)

The Steelers will have to pony up over 20Mil to Franchise him next year (If I read this right) without a long term deal........  They wont do it...... He will be a complete FA before next year starts........ If it goes that route..... the Steelers get NADA in trade.....

The Steelers offered 14 mil,  Bell wants 17 mil

IF...... (A BIG IF) we could sign him to $15.5 mil and guarantee 3 years of a larger deal...... It might be worth a trade........   I would offer next years 3rd round pick

So by saying trade you mean you want us to give up a pick to get him this year?  If so that would have to be a first due to the franchise system no?

Also you are telling me that Bell for some reason from the heavens would sign a 3 year 15.5 mil deal to Indy instead of signing a 14 mil for 5 years with a team already with superbowl contention?  I'd say that is a wish at best.  Also I'd say that proves Bell cares about money more than he cares about winning a superbowl.  If you want that type of attitude around our players I can probably say with a 100% certainty that no one in the Indy org agrees.

The guy is only 26 Years old......  He has been very healthy

He has been ALL Pro 2 times, And pro bowl 3 times

Lol what?  Dude has not been "very" healthy.  He misses games and post seasons frequently in respect to his position.  Also he has multiple off the field issues that are more than concerning with a history of missing time due to those off the fields.  Also lets not ignore the 500 carry rule.  He has been ran hard.  Real hard.  If I were a betting man I'd say whichever team picks him up is picking up an oft injured shadow of the player the Steelers had.

    1 hour ago, MikeCurtis said:

He catches the ball like almost no other..... he hast to be accounted for on EVERY play....

He pass blocks when asked almost better than anyone in the league

I read where he has given up only a TOTAL of three pressures.......

    (Zeke Elliott is the king)

He would seem to be an almost perfect fit

Finally something we can agree on.  Yea hes a good catcher and pass protector (better than Zeke but I digress).

    1 hour ago, MikeCurtis said:

He would immediately step up this team's offense........

We could actually make a playoff run THIS YEAR....... with Bell wearing the shoe.......

This guy is an almost equal game changer to K. Mack, who many wanted to give up 2 first round picks for...........  I think he can be had for MUCH less

AND..... take some pressure off of Luck

If we make a playoff run it won't be because of Bell.  We are getting the exact same type of production without him that we'd get with him except its coming from 3 separate players.  The only thing that you change is that he is a single point of failure instead of 3 separate points of failure.

  11. Mike Tomlin is allowing this team to implode.  He should be fired.  And I'm a Tomlin fan (sort of) but this team is undisciplined and everything from the outside comes in and tears them apart.

Plus AB isn't asking for a trade he was just retorting with sarcasm.  If AB leaves Pitt they will be worse than the Cleveland Browns.  He pretty much carries the team right now with how terrible Ben has been throwing and how up and down the defense is.

I still think that this class has a chance to be special.  All 5 of those runners are really talented (especially Wilkins :).)

It will only add to it when Guice comes back. This class and the previous gave the NFL a ton of talent at the RB position.

If we couldn't get Roquan Smith, I wanted Darius Leonard.  Lets hope he keeps up the good play.

Exactly how I felt. I honestly didn't think he'd make it out of the first but thank God people judge football conferences.

This exactly. In that injury plagued 2016 season I remember Luck missing his receivers high and/or behind. I know it's a small sample size, but it stuck out to me how accurate he was on those numerous quick slants on Sunday.

Quoted a 3rd time just because people need to see.  My biggest gripe on Luck before was throwing high and behind. That's pretty much gone.

Chargers' pass rushers are not slouches but there is little film on him and his tendencies, NFL will make you pay if you do not adapt.

I was more talking about within the confines of the game.  They really didn't touch him nor get close.  There were maybe 10% of dropbacks where he actually felt pressure.

I definitely never played soccer beyond for recreation.   But that doesn't change the premise that is no longer soccer.  It is equivalent to deciding a football game with field goals or a basketball game with free throws.   That, to me anyway,  doesn't make sense.   NFL players can't do it because they don't train to run for that long.  It is not necessary for the sport.   However,  they are good enough athletes to run that long if they trained for it.

I think I didn't convey my point clearly. Apologies.

What I mean is that soccer players already run longer than any sport on Earth.  And they only get to penalties after playing an additional 30 minutes so while I get the premise that it is no longer soccer it's inconceivable to make them play even longer to get a result.  Penalties is the perfect end to the game as it still focuses on the skill of the game with the huge caveat that everyone has rubber legs from running a full 120 minutes.  I just don't see it as comparable as you do too kicking field goals or free throws because the Dynamics of the sports are different.

I agree. Just think people on here wanted Nagy as a coach. His play calling against the Packers was somewhat questionable at times

Questionable at times is an understatement. And that ending sequence was some of the worst play calling I've seen in both college and NFL.  4th and 10 what do they need? A full back apparently to help block but not really because he didn't pay attention to the edge...  Or hey we need 10 yards let's run nothing but 25 yard routes.

Nagy was and still is a terrible coach that rode Reid's reputation.
