  1. I rescind all my previous posts claiming Ballard is not a big FA spender because of this breaking news:

The Colts just signed a 4-year, $22.5 million deal with Kicker Matt Gay. Whew! I was afraid we weren't going to get our kicker for $5.625 million a year this offseason. This is a huge relief. Everybody can relax now.

I am just guessing here, but it sure looks like Payton is gonna remake that offense to limit Russell Wilson's struggles. Basically create what he was successful with in Seattle. Which is predicated on a great running game.

They just spent big big on the OL w McGlinchey and Ben Powers.

So they might feel they don't Neeeeeed some of the WRs they have if they shift their offensive focus and philosophy.

Still think Jeudy could feast somewhere where there is a timing-based system with how impressive his route running and separation can be

Yes that is how aggressive teams who want to fix their problems operate. Somebody could learn a lesson or two.

Ballard is getting comical and embarrassing at this point. At least we used to have cap space available in FA when we didn't sign anyone. Now he isn't even opening up cap space with any restructures or cuts to let us compete to sign FAs. Unless we are drafting Will Anderson, we should be building around our new franchise QB in FA and the draft while his contract is cheap. We aren't even releasing Ryan and Foles.

Not even upset about the lack of signings as I'm used to it, I'm upset that we aren't even trying to allow ourselves to sign a decent FA because of a lack of cap space. Ballard has gone from incompetent in FA, too stubborn, to sabotaging the team as he refuses to change his ways.

Still exercising deferred gratification I see............................................................

If that's the case the Bears will be drafting a quarterback.

You made me think of something I had not thought of previously. Let's say the Bears do decide that they want to move on from Justin Fields and draft one of the top QB's at #1. It seems like they would want to make that determination well before the draft and maybe even before free agency starts. This would maximize their opportunities to market and trade Fields. By the draft, most teams who are not planning on drafting their next QB, will already have an expected starter in place. The Texans will almost certainly draft a QB at #2. If teams like Carolina, Tampa, Washington, and Las Vegas don't wait until the draft to add QB's, there would be few teams even left to trade for Fields.

I think Ballard would rather trade for Fields than trade up.  He liked Fields coming out.  I think if Ballard trades up at all it he’s going to 1 and not risk losing his targeted quarterback.  That will cost him plenty.  I think if the Bears decide to take a quarterback Ballard would be very happy to trade for Fields.

Despite what Ballard said in the end of the year press conference, I don't think he wants to use a bunch of draft capital to trade up for a rookie QB. If he gets the guy he wants at #4 then he will probably do it. If he can get Fields without giving up this year's #4 pick I think he would do it, just because he has seen that Fields can play on the NFL level. Another factor could be how Steichen feels about Fields or any of the top draft prospects.

    ... So wait...

If the Bears don't know how to properly evaluate QBs because they passed on Watson (who I still personally think is overrated to be honest) and Mahomes, what does that say about Justin Fields who is yet another QB they themselves chose?

It is easy to say that now about Watson since he has looked terrible after all his legal troubles, but a few years ago he was highly regarded as one of the top young QB's. As far as Fields goes, I don't think we know yet just what his ceiling will be and we may or may not get to see it with the Bears. I think it is a fair criticism to say the Bears (like the Colts recently) have not done a good job with their QB's.

Not really. A number 4 overall pick is just as valuable as multiple 1st. Top 4 would be a fair swap depending on the draft class. This year number 4 overall guarantees you Stroud, Young, Levis, or Richardson. Next year it may get you Caleb Williams or Drake Maye. Even if he has a breakout year I wouldn’t trade the number 4 overall pick for him. Because if he’s for sale and the Bears think they can get someone better in the draft, then why not just draft the guy?

There is no way the Eagles take that deal right now. They are not going to trade the QB who just took them to the Super Bowl, for #4 pick that might get them Stroud, Young, or Levis, all of which have not proven they can play on the NFL level yet. Most analysts are not calling any of those three guys franchise QB's like is suggested for Williams and Maye next year.

Fine with me. Seriously. If the Bears truthfully think this class is better than Fields, why take him?

Well, the Bears also thought that it was a good idea in 2017 to trade the #3 pick and three other draft picks so they could move up to #2 and pick Mitch Trubisky. In the process they bypassed Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes. I guess the suggestion is that the Bears don't know how to evaluate or develop QB's and maybe they are doing the same with Fields.

hear what you're sayin, but some would argue that Fields really hasn't developed THAT much at this point. He played well this year, but still has a lot of work to do as a passer, I think.

It is a valid point. The Colts would have to determine if someone like Steichen could develop Fields to the level like he did with Hurts.

    No.

Ive been on record as saying that Fields will be good eventually. But to spend the number 4 overall pick to get him when he hasn’t yet reached his potential and there are QBs available that can be just as good or better, would be risky.

Id trade a pick in the 20s for him though. #4 overall is too much though.

Let's say the Bears load up with Fields and he balls out and takes them to a Super Bowl like Hurts did with the Eagles. Then they wouldn't dream of dealing him for a mere #4 pick. See how things can change so quickly. How many people were predicting before the season started that Hurts would have an MVP-caliber season and take his team to the Super Bowl? Not many, the Eagles would laugh now if someone offered them the #4 pick for Hurts.

I just watched highlights of Young on NFL network.  On every touchdown throw the receiver was wide open by like 3 yards.  Looked too easy.

I noticed this some while watching Stroud film too. I was impressed that he seemed to be able to make all the throws, but also wondered how much he benefitted from the skilled receivers that surrounded him. Either way, I liked what I saw.

One issue with trading for Fields rather than drafting one of this year's crop is that Fields is that you only have 2 more years on Field's cheaper rookie contract.

Means having to pay big bucks faster.

I think if you like one of the draftables you take him.

Yes, you would have to pay Fields sooner. The trade off would be possibly skipping the two years that it typically takes a drafted QB to develop. We know that Fields can play on the NFL level. We don't know this about any of the draftees yet. If you draft a QB and then after 2-3 years you realize he is a miss, then you will be back to square one again.

  13. Let's say the Bears would part with Fields for our 35th pick. Can you imagine what Steichen could do with Fields as far as designed runs would go? This would take a lot of pressure off of our line until it can improve. Plus, are teams going to stack the box as much against Taylor if they know the QB can run too? This would also setup some great opportunities for our receivers with play-action.

What I do wonder about is if Ballard would like to have fields over one of these draft picks. We have better receiving options then bears. Steichen could do wonders with him in the passing department I believe. If bears take a QB that most likely leaves  colts with Levis after Texans pick.

That is what I was thinking too. Although, I agree with other posters here that it would probably be better if we could get Fields with a lower pick than this year's #4; or for some collection of future picks.

Irsay seems to love Young, Irsay doesn't know how to cook but he knows football lmao

Yes, If he really loves Young, I would prefer that he not broadcast it to everyone before the draft. It was hard for me to tell if Irsay was just talking off the top of his head, or it was a smokescreen.

bears will get much more by trading the first pick. They are actually in a win win situation trading that first pick. They get a extra first in 24 it protects them if fields does not improve. They can move on after this season because they have a extra first next year in a good draft class. So fields either improves or they set themselves up for next year.

You are right, they are in an enviable position with their draft picks and salary cap money this year.

All in all, I want Young, I could care less about his size. He is the best QB out there coming out IMO.

You could be right. I was impressed with Young's tape. The only thing I didn't like was that he seemed to bail from the pocket a little quicker than I thought he should. But, when you see some of the splash plays that he makes on the move with accuracy, then it is easy to get wowed by his talent. If he can do that on the pro level he will be a star. Stroud seems to be more of a steady hand that does not get rattled very easy. He is not nearly as dynamic as Young on the move but I think he has the ability to make plays with his legs when needed. I like that they are both very accurate passers.

Steichen mentioned accuracy as the first trait he wanted in a QB. 60.4% isn’t accurate in todays NFL where offenses are set up to succeed through the rules. JT isn’t going to make a QB more accurate.

Stroud and Young were both very accurate in college. I think accuracy is even more important on the pro level because there is less margin for error against NFL defenses.
