  1. Sherman and Baldwin are smarter than this, or at least they should be.  The only thing that they are correct about is the alcohol question, they should be able to accept sponsorship money from a beer company although the comment about DUIs was dumb.  If they don't like the rule about being available to the media then they should collectively bargain that into the CBA.  Otherwise deal with it and just give one word answers, it's not that hard.  As far as the headphones go, how does the NFL and the players make money?  Through sponsorship dollars either directly or indirectly.   Therefore, Richard, Bose is helping to pay you.  You can have your Beats headphones you just cannot wear them at the workplace where Bose is an official sponsor, again it is not that hard nor is it hypocritical of the NFL.

A $100,000 fine for not talking to the media is absurd when a player could make a career ending illegal hit and get fined far less. Does anyone care what most NFL players say anyway? Richard Sherman is one of the few who ever actually has anything interesting to say and this is another example of that.

And if Marshawn Lynch doesn't want to talk who really cares? His play on the field speaks for itself. The only ones who really give a damn are the NFL reporters who need access to players and are probably pushing the NFL behind the scenes to take action against Lynch lest he give any other players ideas about avoiding the media. Most NFL reporters are shills for the league so they get what they want.

I'm glad Sherman is sticking it to the NFL for attempting to bleed every dime possible out of the public itself while restricting when and where players can promote their own sponsorship deals. And he's also right about the league hypocritically promoting concern about player safety (mostly for legal reasons) while expanding the number of Thursday night games and also wanting to expand the schedule to 18 games. NFL owners see players as an expendable product and only really care about protecting star quarterbacks who are the marquee players in the league.

Good on Sherman and Baldwin for expressing what most players think and doing it in an entertaining fashion.

  2. In addition, the number of passes Wilson is asked to throw is among the fewest of all QB's and it's been that way since he came into the league.

Yeah, so what? It has to do with Pete Carroll's philosophy. He believes in a balanced attack. His teams at USC also ran more than they passed year after year. The idea that if teams don't pass a lot they are trying to hide the flaws of inadequate quarterbacks is ridiculous. Last season the Seahawks, 49ers, and Panthers all ran more than they passed and finished with a combined 37-11 record. This season the five teams who pass the ball the least have a combined 15-8 record and that includes the Packers with Aaron Rodgers. Passing the ball 40 - 50 times a game is not necessary for success in the NFL.

If the Colts got a better defense and running game and Luck began throwing 25-30 times a game instead of 40-50 times for fewer yards would that be evidence that he has regressed as a quarterback? Based on what I'm reading in this forum that would be the case since volume apparently plays a large role in judging quarterback play.

The bottom line is that whenever Wilson drops back to pass he has been consistently more successful at it than Luck throughout his career and he's done it against better defenses. Wilson has proven to be a smart, accurate, playmaking quarterback who rarely makes mistakes and there's no reason to believe that wouldn't be the case if he passed the ball ten more times a game..

  3.

Andrew Luck attempts 43.2 passes per game.

Russell Wilson attempts 27.8 passes per game.

Volume is not evidence of superiority. If that was the case then Ryan Tannehill, Kirk Cousins, Austin Davis, Derek Carr, Brian Hoyer. EJ Manuel, Mike Glennon, Geno Smith, Drew Stanton, and Jake Locker would all be on the list of quarterbacks who are better than Russell Wilson because they are asked to "do more" by throwing more passes per game. Hell, most of them would be ahead of Aaron Rodgers as well based on average passes per game thrown. Rodgers is averaging only 29.4 passes per game this year.

  4. I don't see the same mojo from them his year. I see it from Wilson. But it is still early for things to change. They can't afford any lulls especially to teams like the Skins with both the niners and cards breathing down their necks.

The offense looks improved despite continued poor pass protection by the OL. Wilson and Lynch have both looked great and Harvin puts a lot of stress on defenses even when he doesn't get the ball. The Hawks had 400+ yards last night and would have run up the score if not for TDs being called back by awful calls by Jeff Triplette's crew. He's the worst lead official in the league and I have no idea how he keeps his job year after year.

The defense shut down Rodgers and also Manning for the first 59 minutes of the Broncos game. Rivers just played a great game against them and made a lot of perfect throws into the narrowest of windows. Tip your cap. Giving up the long bombs to DeSean Jackson last night were uncharacteristic of the Seahawks defense but Jackson can do that to teams and give Cousins credit for putting those throws on the money.

So far the defense hasn't been generating turnovers like they did last year and I attribute some of that to the gauntlet of top shelf QBs they faced in their first three games. They had their hands on a couple of Cousins passes last night that should have been picked and will need to start making those plays. The run defense is giving up 2.6 yards per carry and has easily been the best in the league so far.

The Seahawks defense had a couple of shaky games early in the season last year also (including the Colts game) but got progressively better as the season went on and were lights out in the second half of the schedule and playoffs. We'll see if that holds true again this year or not.

  5. Right now the Seattle offense outranks its defense in points scored vs allowed. Who would have thought that 5 weeks in?

They also faced Rodgers, Rivers, and Manning in three of their four games.

The sloppiness in last night's game came primarily in the offensive line which was their major weakness last year, too. There's nothing wrong with the team's motivation. They're playing a tough schedule and get everybody's best shot and still look like the team to beat in the NFC.

  6. They can run with Lynch and Wilson, beyond that, it's sketchy. SD took it too them, and they struggled against the woeful Redskins. If not for Wilson's constant scrambles, this offense wouldn't move past it's own 50. How can people not see this?

The Seahawks offense has outscored the Colts offense by significant margins in each of the past two seasons.  And they would have put up 40+ against the Skins if not for having three TDs called back, two of them on terrible calls.  Wilson has been one of the NFL's most efficient passing quarterbacks since coming into the league despite playing behind a lousy OL.  What he did against the Skins is what he always does...make plays out of nothing and throw dimes.

One trick pony?  The reason nobody sees this is because its laughably false.

  7. The Seahawks offense crumbles against physical defenses. If anyone can figure out how to play them hard AND perform a proper spy on Wilson, that 1 trick pony offense will not be able to stand.

The Seahawks play against physical defenses all the time.  A lot more often than the Colts do.  Haven't crumbled yet.

  8. No, I don't buy that he Colts intentionally tanked in 2011. Most players in the league are fighting for starting jobs or to even stay in the league. You can't tell me that some were intentionally giving less than full effort so the team could draft high the next year at a potential cost to their own careers. If a player lacks effort or plays poorly that ends up on tape and everyone around the league sees it. Same goes for the coaches. It's hard enough to keep your job as it is in the NFL without intentionally tanking games. It just wouldn't happen.

It was just a bad team.

  9. To end all the discussion.

Colts fans, would you trade Luck for Wilson? No.

Seahawks fans, would they trade Wilson for Luck? In a heartbeat, Yes.

    It's that simple.

I don't know of any Seahawks fans who would trade Wilson for Luck and I don't think Pete Carroll would either.

Wilson is the perfect quarterback for the Seahawks and Pete Carroll's system.  He's smart, accurate, rarely makes mistakes, has complete command of the offense, and plays exactly as he's coached to play.  He's done nothing but win since he's been there.  What would Luck bring to the table the Wilson doesn't for the Seahawks?

  10. For the record, 2011 Seahawks had a top 10 defense, had Marshawn Lynch rushing for 1,200 yards/12 tds, had Richard Sherman, Brandon Browner, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, KJ Wright, Chris Clemons, Mebane, Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate, etc. and they had the ultimate game manager, Tavaris Jackson.

    That team went 7-9.

The biggest difference for Seahawks in 2012 was adding Russell Wilson. They went 11-5, and in the playoffs Wilson led a game winning drive, and nearly led Seattle to the NFC Championship against San Francisco. It was the defense who choked and allowed Ryan to drive down and get a field goal to win the game. That hadn't of happened and there's a good shot Wilson would have been in the Superbowl his rookie year.

The Seahawks also had essentially the same offensive starters in 2012 that they had in 2011 yet scored 91 more points and improved from 23rd to 9th in total offense with Russell Wilson at QB.

And no one was calling the Seahawks a loaded team at the beginning of 2012 after consecutive 7-9 seasons. The narrative back then was that Carroll needed a winning season or else he might be on the hot seat; NFL draft gurus were giving their 2012 draft terrible grades in part for "reaching" for a 5'10" quarterback in the 3rd round after giving Matt Flynn a big contract; and NFL experts were shaking their heads in disbelief when Carroll named Wilson the starter over Flynn. The belief that Wilson was like a high school kid given the keys to a Ferrari and told not to crash it is revisionist history.

  11. You know who thinks Luck is better than Wilson? Doug Baldwin. And he's on the same freaking team. Richard Sherman mentioned Andrew Luck as having the best arm of any QB in the NFL (he did call Luck the 5th "smartest" as opposed to Wilson's 4th). Trent Dilfer has said that he's been told by at least one veteran coach that Luck is "hands down" the best player in the NFL (QB or other position). I've never heard anyone knowledgeable make such a claim about Wilson.

What always gets me when people try to talk about how Wilson is better than Luck is the talk of "efficiency". Sure, his box score numbers would suggest he's more "efficient" than Luck since he has a higher career completion percentage and yards per attempt and a lower career interception total. I think any neutral observer would admit that Wilson has been aided in part by a superior cast around him (especially on defense) and that the running game he has with Marshawn Lynch sets up a more dangerous play action (half Wilsons tds last year). But even if we set all that aside, if he's so much more "efficient", why was his espn total QBR last year lower than Luck's despite being surrounded by such superior talent? And people saying "oh so far this year he's playing better than Luck" - again - his total QBR according to their metrics is lower despite having an easier team to quarterback.

QBR is a joke that no one outside of ESPN headquarters in Bristol, CT takes seriously. Josh McCown was the best quarterback in the league in 2013 according to QBR. Tony Romo threw a horrible pick six against the Rams on Sunday and still ended up with a near perfect 99.1 QBR somehow. Drew Stanton has completed 51.6% of his passes for 6.63 Y/A, 2 TD passes, and 14 yards rushing and is ranked in the top ten QBR, thirteen places higher than Wilson and three ahead of Luck. Does anyone who watches football really believe that Stanton has been outplaying Wilson or Luck this year or that Wilson (who leads the league in traditional passing rating with 108.9) has been the 23rd best quarterback in the league?

    QBR is garbage.

  12. Pro Bowl LT and Center plus Carpenter is a beast and will be a Pro Bowler this year, I wouldn't call that mediocre or horrible

The Hawks' OL was shredded with injuries last year and was one of the worst in the league, especially in pass protection. They have been improved so far this year but pass protection is still mediocre at best. Wilson frequently has to escape the pocket and make plays.

Wilson has also has had to face top defenses far more often than Luck who is playing in the weakest division in the league. Luck won the fantasy football stats battle yesterday against a terrible Jags team but Wilson was more impressive while facing a much better team and was flawless in overtime.

  13. Seattle is not nearly the same team on the road and San Diego...has a lot of good offensive skill players...Tell me you think San Diego cant run the ball on Seattle

The Seahawks were 6-2 on the road last year and if you want to count the Super Bowl are 10-3 away from home over their last 13 games. On top of that they haven't lost by more than seven points anywhere - home or road - in a league record 46 straight games.

A lot of teams wish they could be that bad on the road.

  14. I thought that looked like an open handed hard slap...could be wrong. And what was it that led her to get up in his face like she was right before the hit? I am certainly not excusing his actions,,,That should be inexcusable from either a man OR a woman but to me it looks like they were arguing and she was closing in on trying to get up in his face and he lost his composure...So my question is...Why is Ray Rice the only one taking the heat for this...If she don't get up his face then she sure isn't in range to be slapped/punched...and yes a slap could knock someone out if it was hard enough...Was she drunk? Was he drunk?

She reacted because Rice spit in her face. Twice. Once in the hallway and again after they entered the elevator.

When Rice got only two games suspension I thought there must have been some mitigating circumstances and maybe she was wailing on him when he struck her, but that wasn't the case. Rice was the aggressor. She never did anything but react to his aggressive and contemptible behavior. Rice should have gone to jail for what he did.

And I'm not buying for a second that Goodell and the Ravens never saw this video until today. Peter King and Chris Mortensen both reported in July that the league had seen the video. They're lying and are in full cover up mode right now. Goodell should be fired.

  15. I don't disagree with the strategy but just the claims by Sherman that he is the best corner in the game. I am not sure he is the best corner on his own team.

Maxwell would probably be the best corner on many teams in the NFL but he's not in Sherman's class yet.  The fact that opposing QBs and OCs, men who spend hours dissecting tape of the Seahawks defense, would much rather attack Maxwell than Sherman speaks volumes.

If the Seahawks secondary has a vulnerability it's in its depth. They lost Browner and Thurmond from last year and Tharold Simon and Jeremy Lane are hurt right now.  It looks like they may need to start Marcus Burley, who they just got from the Colts, at nickel corner next week.   They like his potential but he's barely practiced with the team so far.  You guys would probably know more about him than I would.

  16. I'm saying that if Russell Wilson was/is an elite QB they make those last game winning drives instead of throwing a INT.I also am not a Payton manning fan and I think he crumbles under the pressure myself... But luck is THE best QB in the fourth quarter that I have ever seen play IMO.

Neither Wilson or Luck are the best 4th quarter QBs at this point in their careers but if you want to compare them head-to-head their number of 4th quarter comebacks and game winning drives are nearly identical.  And here are their stats when their team is either trailing or tied in the fourth quarter:

    Wilson:  85-145   58.6%  1165 yds  11 TD    7 Int  8.0 Y/A  89.6 rate

    Luck:    154-271  56.5%  1931 yds  13 TD  12 Int  7.1 Y/A  76.7 rate

As with almost all comparisons between the two, Luck ends up with more volume stats (atts, comps, yds)  but Wilson is much more efficient and effective per pass attempt.

Here are their stats when their team is trailing by double digits or more:

    Wilson:  52-73  71.2%    747 yds  6 TD   0 Int  10.2 Y/A  131.5 rate

    Luck:   86-149  58/8%  1038 yds  7 TD 10 Int   7.0 Y/A     66.9 rate

As you can see Wilson has been brilliant when his team has trailed by double digits or more.  The Seahawks have trailed in seven games by 10 or more with Wilson as a starter and have come back to win six of them.  The sole loss was in the playoffs against the Falcons when Wilson played a great second half and led the Seahawks back from a 20 point deficit to take the lead with 31 seconds left only to have the defense blow it.  Anyone who says that Wilson can't carry a team from behind haven't been paying attention.

  17. Thank you for your response but when I asked about other CBs, I mean the other CBs on Seattle who routinely cover the 1 and 2 receivers. They seem as good as Sherman.

Browner was the most physical CB in the game but was not as good a coverage CB as Sherman.  When he got hurt/suspended last year he was replaced by Maxwell who is not as physically intimidating as Browner but has been better in coverage.  Maxwell had four INTs in the last five regular season games last year and another one Thursday night.

And the claim that Sherman only guards #3 or #4 receivers is bogus. Keeping the top receivers away from Sherman's side of the field is a relatively new strategy and it didn't help the Packers. By doing that opposing teams are essentially voluntarily taking half the field away from their best receivers and forcing QBs to throw to the left. I doubt that most teams will go to that extreme.  When you consider that teams don't like throwing in the middle of the field either because that's where Chancellor and Thomas roam it really limits the playing field for offenses.

  18. I agree but hard to see Sherman as a great CB when he gets the 3 or 4 receiver to cover. What is your opinion of the other CBs? They seem just as good as Sherman to me.

Revis is a great CB when healthy and will probably have a very good year with the Pats.  Peterson has a world of talent but he relies too much on his physical tools and gives up too many big plays.  You don't see QBs avoiding him the way they do Sherman.  Sherman probably doesn't have Peterson's physical tools but he is the smartest CB in the game.  He studies film obsessively and often knows exactly what route the receiver is running and he'll often try to bait the QB into thinking the receiver is open and then jumping the route.  That's why he gets so many picks despite so few targets and why QBs are increasingly gun shy about going after him.

  19. I just think Seattle's defense would be that much better if Sherman eliminated the #1 WR like "The best CB in the game" should.

    But that's just my opinion

The Seahawks secondary is probably the most dominant secondary in years so why should they change anything?  If quarterbacks are not even looking Sherman's way that effectively cuts the field in half and makes it easier to cover the rest of the field.  And Rodgers isn't the only QB who won't challenge Sherman.  Manning and Brees barely targeted him either last year in their games against the Seahawks.  That should tell you all you need to know about what the best QBs in the game think of Sherman.

And so much for the NFL's new point of emphasis rules that were allegedly aimed at the Seahawks DBs.  The Seahawks were the only team not to get a defensive holding penalty in the preseason and they had no penalties in this game.  The pass interference call went against LB Bobby Wagner and that would have been called in any year.  They are the most talented and best coached secondary in the league and have easily adjusted to the tighter rules without missing a beat.  They just held one of the games elite QBs to less than 200 yards passing and 5.7 YPA.  If you're keeping score at home, the league's four consensus elite QBs (Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers) are now 0-6 vs. the Seahawks since 2012 and have thrown only 6 TD passes (with 5 INTs) and their teams have scored a combined 81 points (13.5 ppg).

  20. Luck is being rated by a lot of people as a top five quarterback right now despite the fact he has yet to crack a 90 passer rating and the Colts have been 18th and 14th in points scored his first two seasons guiding the offense. On that basis I think it's fair to say he has been somewhat overrated. The "he took over a 2-14 team" narrative has helped his reputation so far but it won't for much longer unless he actually starts producing at something approaching an elite level which he hasn't come close to doing yet. The third season is generally when quarterbacks can be fairly evaluated for their long-term potential so perhaps this will be the season that he breaks through.
