  1. There are players that want to be great. And some who want a great paycheck.. nicks doesnt seem to play hard.. but in his defense i see lots of uncatchable balls his way.. and for people saying he runs the wrong routes.. how the hell you know?. Are you a master of the colts playbook?

I think that the Steelers had Nicks scouted better than Moncrief and thats why he had a bad game to a certain extent. Nicks has done some great things in the past and he garnered more attention. Moncrief had better opportunities and, to his credit, took advantage of them. Remember last year when Rogers put up the great numbers against the Bengals, the next game, the opposition scouted him and took him out of the game for the most part. So, lets see how Moncrief does once hes viewed as a legitimate threat and scouted better.

Additionally, if Nicks cant reach the balls that are thrown his way, why does he get the blame for it? Maybe Andrew saw the tighter coverage on him and made some uncatchable throws. The pick six was late to Nicks and very slow to develop. Just what occurs on normal pick sixs' in the NFL. As much as everyone seems to love Whalen, if he was the answer, NIcks wouldnt even be on the squad.

  2. Grigson is pretty smart guy, he WILL learn from this but he also knows we will NEVER give up that many points EVER again.  One of the worst defensive showings I've ever seen since the Colts got here in 84. Big Ben ate us alive, exposed the DB's, their o-linemen were men against boys pushing us all over the place.  Grigson will shore some things up in the coming years.  It will not happen overnight.  Probably two years to get some good defensive talent and some bigger bodies (although I thought we were bigger until I saw how big the Steelers looked at opening kickoff, I was like, wow, they are some very large offensive linemen.)

Everyone keeps talking bigger bodies, bigger bodies, etc...this isn't the issue. We have the biggest bodies we are going to get. We've got enough big bodies. This isn't the answer. The MINDSET needs to get fixed. You cant have a dominant defense without the mindset that comes with it. Dominant defenses buy into the belief system  that they are dominant ALL the time and a great game isn't part of a process to get somewhere, but it's already where they are. You cant say "Thats the closest we've come to becoming the kind of defensive team we want to be". You have to know that you already ARE there. Confidence isn't in striving or becoming...its in BEING. Once that sinks in, we'll see consistently dominant performances from these guys. They have the physical tools, we've seen that. Its the MENTAL that needs upgrade.

  3. OK, I have an observation. After spending many years in the Military in a leadership role, around Sailors and Marines, SEALS, etc. the one conclusion I have come to is that the difference between high performance teams like the SEALS and RECON and high performance defenses in the NFL is the identity/mental factor. Military teams have an identity that they totally buy into 100% of the time. The Colts defense isn't that way and here's why.

Being "humble" is great in theory. Being a GOD fearing man, I get why that's necessary to speak to. But, in a professional sport such as football, being humble can be misconstrued. If you dominate one game and suck the next, its because you haven't totally bought in to the mentality it takes to BE dominant...at ALL times, game in and game out. Every astute observer knows its a mental thing. The dominant defenses of the past bought in to the belief that they were dominant ALL the time and they didn't apologize for that, or ask for humility. I never heard SEALS or RECON saying, "hey, we're the best at what we do, but we should remain humble".  This sends a subconscious message that 'hey, we actually aren't as good as we think, we just had ONE great game, so we should remain humble and not really buy into the idea that we ARE great'. That duality cant coexist in the mind. The underlying notion is that the dominance was really a surprise, instead of whats expected ALL of the time. This makes for hesitant responses when confronted with challenge.  And any split second mental hesitation can get you killed. There is no other rational explanation as to why the Steelers completely dominated us up front on both sides of the ball unless its mental. They weren't any bigger or stronger than the Bengal offensive line. They just bought into the notion that they were better then our lineman and they were not going to be denied or beaten with no reservations about it.

You never hear teams like the Patriots or Steelers or any other perennially powerful teams ever apologize or downgrade a dominant performance. They don't place a humility stamp on it because they know better. Yes, they may be considered arrogant or whatever, but you have to respect the fact that they bring it most of the time. They expect that to happen every time they take the field. That's what the great Military teams, the SEALS and Marines do year in and year out. Until our defensive mindset takes that turn, we'll see more up and down performances like the last two weeks from now on.  The coaches need to teach greatness into the mindset of the players and once a great performance happens, they should say, "that's who we are", not "well, we're starting to get to be what we want, but we aren't really there yet". The defensive team, from the players to the coaches should understand, "HELL yeah, THAT'S  the defensive team we ARE and that's the team that's going to show up EVERY week. Nobody is going to win them all since yes, this IS the NFL, but you'd see more outstanding performances more often than not.

  4. Not sure why we are still a very good team. NE lost to KC 41-14 not even in the game are they still an elite team? We will learn from this and move on. It is not the end of the world.

Very good point. I like that mentality since its not what happens to you that matters, but how you deal with it. This team is resilient. I think they'll bounce back really well. The Patriots used that KC game as fuel to get back to being themselves. Sometimes its the adversity that's dealt with that brings out the best in a team as far as pulling together when it counts the most.

  5. Yeah... I think all the " elite" feelings have come to an abrupt end.

Yeah, that was a train wreck. Never, in my most pessimistic outlooks did I believe that the defense from last week would give up, to the Steelers, over 600 yards in one game. That's a new one on me. But, rather than talk about the many times in the past that the defense let the Colts down, which were many, I believe this can be used as motivation to make the second half of the season a defensive gem. They sure have a lot to make up for. But, after a performance like that, the defensive stats as well as respect throughout the league will suffer greatly. Big Ben is good, but damn....;-)

  6. the 07 D with the hit squad secondary in Sanders/Bethea/Hayden/Jackson was really a special unit.  damn shame that Freeney got hurt because that was the best Colts D I've ever seen.

I dont agree. That team never pitched a shut-out and they couldn't keep the Chargers at bay AT home without Phillip Rivers AND Ladainian Tomlinson out of the game, in that one-and-done playoff scenario that was all too familiar with those Manning led teams. No hate for Peyton, since when he hangs his cleats up, he'll go in the Colts Ring of Honor for sure, but that was the knock on those teams back in the day. With the defense this teams is fielding right now, this team should do much better come Lombardi-hoisting time for a number of years.

  7. There isn't much to like. I will be happy when he is upgraded and off the team

For real. Watch out for Jeff Demps....they didn't sign him because of his hairstyle. He'll have Whalen watching from the sidelines as soon as he gets up to speed with the Colts scheme.

  8. It doesn't say anything about Mathis' future. He still has earned his contract and until he cant perform physically, he'll be  apart of this teams plans. But, he can only play for so long and this Achilles issue may be the beginning of a decline in his production. We'll have to wait and see.

  9. So when he fumbles he almost costs the Colts the game, But when he does his job he doesn't put the Colts in position to win the game?

Seems the OP is not only one who is guilty of seeing what he wants to see.

Ok, so it seems to me that you are at best, saying that this guy is mediocre when he simply "does his job". I dont think a prospective Championship team should settle for mediocrity. Do you?

  10. Look....its cool that the originator of this post seems to only see what he wants to see and just seems to be a Whalen fan, but a return man should bring more positives to the position than negatives and Whalen just hasn't done that. Look at it rationally and not emotionally and you'll see the simple truth. What has he done to put us in position to actually WIN a game this season? And then, on the flip side, what has he done that almost actually cost a game? (i.e.  Ravens game) Not much else needs to be said.

  11. definitely like sergio better in coverage, and i think that's more important in the defense we play. still wanna see more consistency from brown before totally giving up on landry. one or two decent games isn't enough of a sample size

No, I think we've seen all we need to of Serg. His enthusiasm alone will get him over most of his shortcomings, but cover skills are a must in any dominant defenses' ability to be consistently dominant in this pass-happy NFL. I liked Sergio Brown when he was in college at Notre Dame. Always solid. He deserves the starting job. Its his to lose. Not Landrys to assume when he gets back in.

  12. Obviously Moncrief, We're all hoping he's going to be our future number 1.

I agree. Whalen is OK. Just ok. Moncrief has shown much better athletic ability and that's what you need to excel at wide receiver in the NFL Not to mention that his hands have been outstanding, as well.

  13. This team is one of the few teams that have had the Colts number for way too long. We need to have a beat-down in Pittsburgh since, after all, Cory Redding says this is a "New era" in Colts football. Defense sets the tone on this one: 30-13. 4 sacks, two picks and Hakeem Nicks has a big game along with TY. Moncrief makes his presence felt, as well.

  14. Hopefully, the Colts don't fall into the trap of trying to make Luck win the game for the team in the future. If you look at the 49ers and Seahawks, they've built powerhouses by hanging their hat on a dominant defense. Thats got to be this teams mindset moving forward. Lucks talent is evident and will continue to build. But defense, and for that matter, a dominant offensive line, as well, has to be the mind-set for team progress. The guys in the trenches for the team this year havent been at the level they need to be to build this Monster the Owner and coach talk about. And finally, if you cant run the ball and cant stop the run, you don't deserve to go deep in the playoffs. Just sayin. But, we'll get there.

  15. So which teams showed on espn on all the time have made the Super Bowl? haha

If you look at it more closely, ESPN plays to the favorites in a popularity contest sort of way. Its the ONLY way a team that has shown such mediocrity as the Dallas Cowboys keep getting air time like they have been legitimate Super Bowl contenders for years...they have gotten more coverage on ESPN than any of the past 10 Super Bowl winners COMBINED. And this team has been a 500% club since 1997. It just beggs the question...since "Americas team" is supposedly the Cowboys, is mediocrity what "America" really celebrating? ESPN is ridiculous.

  16. Are the old "Fire Arians" threads still available for perusal? A lot of people on here were calling for his head bc Luck was getting killed last year. Also, complaints about no check downs, no attempts to run the ball, plays taking too long to develop....geesh hindsight is 20/20 isn't it? You are are canonizing Arians right now when last year everyone complained how his offense wasn't working here. I distinctly remember the same "he won't adjust his game plan" complaint threads about Arians last year as we're seeing with Pep this year. And Pep has tried in the past few weeks! Arians just kept having Luck chuck it down field and get crushed. Pep may not be the answer. But Arians is gone and we can't change that. Pep is learning on the fly and has dealt with massive offensive injuries that Arians didn't have last season. But with this line and the injuries we have, Arians' offense would likely produce similar results

Very fair post. After this new style of play takes hold when all the starters that are injured get back and the Colts are as hard to beat every week as they looked up in San Fran, these same haters will be on the bandwagon when the Colts win big. And they wont even have the decency to say they were wrong about Hamilton. That 49er game is the blueprint for going deep in the Playoffs. Just look at the results of the two teams in the AFC that employ that style. Between the Steelers and the Ravens, since 2000, they BOTH have two Super Bowl victories. How many do the Colts have in that time trying to air it out to beat NFL Championship contenders. When the Colts DID win the Super Bowl in 2006, it was a strong defense late in the season and smash-mouth football, much of it on the ground with Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai that got us the Lombardi trophy. If people are HONEST with themselves, they'll see that a great rush defense, and the Colt smash-mouth GROUND game and probably Dominic Rhodes were the REAL story of the game and Dom earned the MVP award. I was shocked they "gave" it to Peyton. And that's an honest, non-biased assessment.

  17. You wanted Arians to be HC after he was fired by the Steelers? I call nonsense on that one.

And I think you forgot how bad the offense was at times last year. Now imagine that offense without Reggie, DA and Vick Ballard.

I totally agree. I dont see why no one is giving Pep Hamilton anything but failing grades after the cards hes been dealt as far as personnel injuries are concerned. He didn't ask for DHB dropping key passes or Reggie Wayne being hurt. But, his style of play, when things get back to normal with the right personnel, will build Championships. No one was dogging him out when we played Steeler and Raven like smash-mouth Football on the 49ers.  Everyone wants the gaudy numbers but damn yall...all those years with Peyton Manning lighting up the scoreboard during the regular season to watch every smash-mouth team come in and knock us out of the Playoffs hasnt educated anyone YET? I understand Irsays mentality that ONLY one Lombardi trophy after all those so-called great OFFENSIVE numbers is a good lesson learned. Smash-mouth Football on BOTH sides of the ball will win Championships. MULTIPLE ones....not Madden 2014 offensive numbers....Pep's doing fine.

  18. Credit to Vontae, he cleaned up his play today and was the shutdown corner we know and love. Made Andre Johnson's night a misery.

Very good game from the CB's and Linebackers as well. Angerers' absence must have made a difference. This team has to bring a great performance to the Chiefs game to get the NFL back to talking about the Colts as a Championship contender, because they'll have to likely go on the road this year if they expect to go far in the playoffs.

  19. well Angerer is worse than Sheppard, Connor, and McNary imo, so hopefully he is inactive next week as well, or at least behind them

I agree....Angerer needs to try to stay on this team as a special teams standout and work on his cover skills if he wants to go back to being a starter. But, if the Colts have some sentimental reasons for this guy being a starter, it'll be a big mistake.

  20. Cause the coaches realize he's not good. And they wanna see more of Josh McNary

Very true. Its hard not to see him chasing the opposing runner, tight end, receiver on big scoring plays that he was responsible for. He just doesn't have NFL cover linebacker speed. A definite and pretty obvious detriment to the starting unit. He doesn't play, and the Defense puts up dominating numbers. Playing good team defense is about match-ups and he was the weak link in the 11 man chain for the team. Hopefully, they can find some place for him on the squad where he isn't a liability, like a stand-out on special teams. We still need good coverage there.

  21. not getting love isn't the same as being bashed. Werner is a rookie, hughes didn't take anymore of a beating here than werner has

I never said he got bashed. But Werner hasn't taken ANY beating or negativity in any way here. But, I understand...fans interpret things the way they want and you're entitled to take my point in whatever direction you want. After all, its America.

  22. When we drafted Hughes we brought him in to be a 4-3 DE as a 3rd pass rusher to Mathis and Freeney.  This was his position in college.  He was on the smaller side like Mathis, 6-2 250, but was an excellent athlete and had a great first step.  This never worked out however.  He never really made an impact and didn't become what everyone thought he could.  I remember around the draft, Hughes was graded out as the top 3-4 OLB prospect that year by many people.  It just didn't work out.  After a season in our hybrid 3-4 in 2012, he showed a little more promise, but the brass decided to trade him to Buffalo.  He's definitely having a career year for the Bills, and I hope the best for him.  Sometimes things just don't work out.

Others that never transitioned well from 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB are Aaron Maybin out of PSU, Vernon Gholston out of OSU, and I'm sure there have been others.

Great post, however, I was only referring to the fan and media reaction that the two players received in Indianapolis. Stark contrast in my opinion. Most Everyone was questioning if Hughes was a bust almost from the beginning....but NO one has used that word so far in reference to Werner...Its just interesting to see how there are so many excuses for Werner's play that didn't get stated for Hughes. The unfairness of it all is very interesting in this day and age.

  23. My God if the Internet was around when Cowher, Parcells, or other good coaches were having teething pains in their early years....Every fan base would have them run out of town. We are 8-5, incredibly injured, and Pagano is in his first real season as HC. Give the man some time for God's sake! He does need to get more aggressive (not going for it on 4th down when behind by 2 TDS) but I think he will learn...

Well, I admire and appreciate the positive spin on this, but Cowher, Parcells or Bill Belichick (someone I definitely don't like, but have to respect his coaching skills) didn't get run out of opposing stadiums consistently on the defensive side of the football like the Colts keep getting. All those coaches responded by dealing with and Mastering team issues and they didnt let it linger. Game after game, the Colts start slow, the Defense doesn't attack and show a dominant mentality, as this coach assured Mr. Irsay they'd have and unfortunately, that's the sign of a mentally weak team. We know the Colts can play shut down defense....we've seen it. Look at the film of the 49ers game, the second half of the Seahawks game and the first 3 quarters of the Broncos game. People don't understand how much of this game is mental. I've lead teams in the Military to achieve things far greater than anyone, including themselves, thought were possible, so I know that this team, with the personnel they have RIGHT now...can be Championship contenders. This Coach doesn't have the mental make-up (so far) of a Championship coach. Keeping it positive, I hope that changes.
