Gruden won one SB with someone else's team.  Then began the ugly decline.  I don't know why people are so excited about Gruden.

Well, for starters, I don't put much stock into the "someone else's team" theory of coaching evaluation.  Most coaches aren't GMs -- so virtually all of them are dealing with "someone else's team".  Second, the team Gruden played in the Super Bowl that year was the team he had just left.  So, if you're going to take credit away from him for the Bucs success, don't you owe it back to him for the success the Raiders had?

That said, Gruden wouldn't be my first choice.  I'd much rather see Jim Harbaugh back in Colts blue.  But I don't think that's likely to happen at this time.

Its doubtful that Grigson would micromanage a competent HC, so the point is moot.

Heh.  Well, one of the big bones of contention between Pagano and Grigson was whether or not to start Trent Richardson last season.  Pagano thought he should be benched, Grigson thought he should start.  Grigson won.

Pagano may or may not be a competent head coach.  But, in that particular instance, he was clearly right.  Grigson, on the other hand, had a dog in that hunt:  he's the one who traded the 1st round draft pick for TR, and it stands to reason that he'd want such a player on the field regardless what the HC said.

I suspect Grigson would've intervened against any head coach in that situation, whether he thought them competent or not.

They had that link up this morning. I think it was expecting it.

Yeah, I think too much is being read into that.  That's not how it would be reported.  It's a speculation of who the Colts might hire in the event that Pagano is fired.

Grigson has to go one way or another. What HC are you going to attract if Pagano isn't the answer now, or down the road? Even if you keep Pagano Grigson has to go.

"Has to"?  No, Grigson doesn't have to go.  He should go.  But he may very well not go.  And I suspect that whether or not he does will have a lot to do with whether or not Pagano is retained and who the next HC will be if he's not.

If Irsay's going after somebody like Gruden, it's entirely conceivable that the hire could come with conditions.  No way is a coach like Gruden (or Sean Payton, for that matter) going to endure a micromanaging GM.

We'll know what's going to happen soon enough.

I saw that chuck doesnt know what his status is.  After the meeting with Irsay it is still up in the air.  I am thinking that Chuck will be back because he hasnt been fired yet or this could be another mismanagement by the team.

Why would it be "mismanagement" -- because the decision isn't being made (or announced) as quickly as some fans want?

Obviously, the longer this drags out, the better the chance that Pagano (and/or Grigson) will be retained.  But maybe Irsay's taking the temperature of the marketplace.  After all, his choice isn't between Pagano and "The Ideal Coach."  His choice is between Pagano and somebody else he could realistically hire.  And maybe that's not such an easy choice to make.

If the candidates he would prefer over Pagano are not available, then isn't keeping Pagano the best decision?

Sounding like the same old stuff we've heard around the media the whole season.  NOBODY really knows what's going on.  I thought it was almost set in stone the news Pagano will not be brought back would've made headlines before noon today.  However, a press conference was scheduled for mid afternoon, now there is no conference.  Leads me to believe Irsay is coming to his senses, most people want Pagano around, and he has plenty of time to think about the situation.  Not pulling the trigger quite yet, or perhaps having a change of heart and wanting Chuck to stay along with the fans/players.

"Set in stone"?  Irsay denied the Wells report almost immediately after it came out.

Now, I realize that this is a familiar pattern:  some reporter gets an "inside tip" that a coach will be fired, reports it, ownership denies the decision has been made, a couple days later the coach is indeed fired.

But...set in stone?  No, nothing's been set in stone.  A whole lot of people want to see Pagano retained:  including people whose opinions might actually influence Irsay (like players).

I think it's more than likely Pagano's done.  It would be a surprise if he isn't.  But rumors and facts are two different things for a reason.

Same. But if they were going to fire him though, surely they would have done it before the final team meeting? This is weird.

Keep in mind that Pagano will either be offered a contract extension or his contract will not be renewed.  He isn't going to be fired either way.

Yes, I realize that's ultimately just semantics.  But it could explain the reason we aren't hearing anything.

Im curious....given today's day and age, you'd think if the players had been told Pags is gone, 1 or more would have leaked it on twitter by now...........

I've thought the same thing.  I still think Pags is probably toast.  But it is interesting that we haven't heard anything definitive leaking out.

Maybe my prayers will be answered:  Pagano gets an extension, Grigson is shown the door.

I think they are. There is a lot of talk about 49'ers besides Colts. I don't think he will end up in Indy though.

Clearly, the Saints are interested in seeing what they can get for Sean Payton.  Too much smoke for there to be no fire.  I guess the question comes down to what they can get for him.

I think Payton's a really good coach, myself.  But I'm not sure he's worth a high draft pick -- particularly for any team that has rebuilding to do.

Most of the names mentioned for the Colts job (assuming Pagano is gone, that is) are established names:  Shanahan, Gruden, and Payton.  Personally, I don't see Gruden getting back into coaching.  I think Payton ends up at the 49ers.  And I think Shanny ends up in Miami.

Of course, my first choice would be Harbaugh.  But I doubt he'd leave his alma mater after just one season.  I think the Niners were nuts to get rid of him.

  10. Personally...

    1) Jim Irsay doesn't need to listen to fans.  In fact, he shouldn't listen to fans.  He may or may not do what fans want.  But he shouldn't take our opinions into consideration either way.

    2) Is it really a "fan consensus" that Pagano be retained and Grigson fired?  Not sure about that.

    3) I think Pagano should be retained and Grigson fired.  Grigson authored this mess -- particularly when he (reportedly) decided to overrule Pagano on what are supposed to be coaching decisions.

    4) I'm not a huge Pagano backer.  But taking this team, with all its faults and key injuries, to 8-8, is no mean feat.

    5) Whoever compared Polian to Grigson needs to have their head examined.  Bill Polian is one of the most successful GMs in NFL history -- and not only at Indianapolis.  Ryan Grigson is new to running NFL franchises, and obviously not very good at it (yet, anyway).

    6) If Irsay does fire Pagano, I'd be excited to see either Sean Payton or Jon Gruden here.  Mike Shanahan, not so much.  Miami obviously wants him and they can have him.  I'd love even more to see Jim Harbaugh, but I don't think that's going to happen.

  11. There's a difference between fans talking about possible seedings and players talking about it. I doubt that if any of us look ahead that it would affect any game outcomes.

No kidding.  Every time I hear something like that ("we should focus on X"), I always wonder if it's one of the players posting.

It's our job as fans to worry about playoff seedings and all that.  Of course the players shouldn't be focused on that -- and I'm sure they're not.  But I don't see any reason why fans have to keep their focus only on the next game.

  12. Could it be that Trent has the potential to be a top-5 back, but hasn't had time to be fully acclimated with the play book...

Could be.  But the window on that possibility is closing, wouldn't you say?  In this league, players don't get an unlimited amount of time to prove their mettle.  They either produce or they bounce around with lower and lower stock until nobody else is willing to take the bet.

Along with the fact that we have the worst run blocking offensive line in the NFL

Yet Brown is churning out just shy of 6 YPC.  Bradshaw was getting 4.5 YPC before he got hurt.

In fact, Brown has more rushing yards than Richardson this season, despite getting almost half as many carries.  I think people have a right to be wondering if we just traded away a 1st rounder on the second coming of Ki-Jana Carter.

  13.

we invested heavily in Trent ..and we have to stick with him..

Do we?  I was as jazzed as anybody when we picked TRich up.  And it's understandable that an RB might get off to a slow start in a new system.  But I'd say that the grace period is over -- and it's past time to start expecting better production out of him.

Let's not fool ourselves here in the interest of loyalty and unity.  If anybody says they aren't at least somewhat disappointed with what we've gotten from him to this point, they're probably not being fully truthful.

As far as I'm concerned, Donald's the one earning the heavy investment.

  14. Let's be real.  Waldon should not be given ANY suspension.  We need him too much.  We cannot afford to lose him for even one game.  So therefore, he should not be suspended.  I'm even against a fine.  A fine could have his head out of an important game and I just don't think the fine he is getting (or got) makes any sense and is a distraction to the team.  NO FINE (if you already fined him, please pay him back), and NO SUSPENSION.

Something has to be done.  Just because "we need him" does not justify him not being suspended.  The NFL cannot allow that kind of stuff to go on -- particularly in the age of concussion frenzy.

I tend to think that the Colts cutting him would be an overreaction.  But I think the NFL fining and suspending him would not.
