  1. The Lions, Cards, Bears and Giants are all interviewing Shurmur. He has HC experience. His Browns teams won 9 games during the '11 '12 seasons. That doesn't seem like a fail to me. Heck, that's success for the Browns.

To me, he's a far superior candidate to Nagy. Reid may call Nagy the best HC candidate he's had in 30 years, but you saw yesterday that when it was time for the rubber to meet the road in the 4th quarter Andy had his play sheet out and looked like he took over some of the play calling from Nagy. Lack of trust?

I think Bears end up with Nagy if this is true. He seems to want to work with them and Chi have some nice young pieces with their RBs.

McDaniels will most likely be ours most likely. He won't have to teach a raw kid how to play he can just come in and start installing with one of the best.

Good. I hope Nagy does go with the Bears. He is certainly not a favorite candidate of mine.

Funny how quickly the tune changed on this forum regarding Nagy after the first half.  No offense in the the second half leads to another K.C. loss in the playoffs after jumping out to a big league.  Should be an interesting interview tomorrow.

    Yeah, Baby

  4. Listening to Polian, it seemed like he still prefers to focus premium draft picks on offensive weapons. While not saying the Colts should use the pick to draft Barkley, he did say ...didn't we pick Edgerrin with the 3rd pick (actually it was the 4th) and how did that turn out? He also put a focus on WR by saying TY is the only current receiver who could have made one of his Colts teams.

I'm still believing that option 1 should be trade down to get more valuable picks. Option 2 would be to draft Bradley Chubb. Dynamic edge rushers are so, so hard to come by.

     Ballard did it in one.
We still need a rush DE/OLB.
We still need two quality LB's that can cover in the 4-2.
And we still need one or more DT's that can rush the passer.
Your team played about 65% in 4-2 and will with whoever we hire.
So what is the big deal with our base anyway?

    Did exactly what in one?

  6. It took us years to get the D personnel converted over for the 3-4 from the 4-3. This was the first year we had the right kind of NT (Woods). We are a rush OLB and two ILBs from being in good shape personnel wise. Moving to a 4-3 would put us much further away for the number of pieces to add. Please, let's not squander two/three more of Luck's best years jockeying the defense. Besides, I believe the 3-4 has a higher ceiling.

    I like Pat Schurmur.

He was a head coach in the past with the Browns, but he won 4 games and then 5 games with the Browns which in Browns terms is a pretty darn good season.

Then he's OC for the Eagles under Chip Kelly, ran a pretty darn good offense under Nick Foles until Chip Kelly took over roster control and decided to go crazy and trade away all of their talent.

He becomes the Eagles interm HC and wins that game.

Then he's Vikings OC and he's running a pretty solid offense with Case Keenum.  And I will also note that the Vikings offense doesn't have a lot of big name players on it either.  They have a solid TE, but I don't see a top 10 receiver on that offense.

Shurmer is my preference too. I like the offense of the Vikes and the fact that he's had head coaching experience is a big plus for me.

  8. When do contracts expire? At the end of a particular team's games for the year? On a particular date on the calendar? Has Vrable's contract expired?

The biggest thing against this possibility being likely is that I really don't see Ballard hiring a coordinator before the new HC can be involved.

I personally don't think Barkley will be there at 3, but other than that, where the Colts are concerned using the logic about finding good backs later in draft may be valid sometimes but with the Colts that's not the case. Jury is still out on Mack, could be an exception, but Ballard, Robinson and Ferguson all mid round/4th round picks and they sucked.  Hence why Colts went after Richardson and Gore

Ballard was good, not great, until injury ruined him. Robinson was a poor pick IMO. Too slow. Varga, an UDFA, was better. I think Ferguson was a very late round pick not mid-round. Still, with better scouting you get better results.

  10. I believe if he's still there for the Colts Barkley would be the BPA. However, my first choice would be to trade down because I'm concerned that Chubb isn't a great fit for a 3-4 defense at OLB and there isn't an OL worthy of the #3 pick IMO. I also believe good RBs can be had with a lower value pick. Problem is in order to trade down you need a viable trading partner.

Penn State runners usually do not do well in the Pros and this is going back decades except for Curt Warner at times.

    You forgot about Larry Johnson.

But that really doesn't matter because I agree with others that what the school produced at that position previously has no bearing on an individual players talent. Carson Wentz and Derek Carr should have been busts because their schools hadn't turned out pro QBs. Makes no sense to me.

  12. I think the final hiring might give some real insight into who controlled the choice, Irsay or Ballard. Of course Irsay has the final word but it might show how much he put his faith in Ballard.

If it ends up Gruden or Harbaugh (which I doubt either one will end up HC) it likely means Irsay controlled. If it ends up Toub or Nagy, the Ballard was given the freedom.

My personal choice would be Pat Shurmer

I followed Denver closely back then because of Manning, and all I can say I didn't like him as the Broncos DC. He forced his hybrid 4:3 on that very talented Denver defense, which was soo obviously better suited for 3-4. He made that unit just OK instead of very good. Just look what happened when Son of Bum took over. They exploded immediately.

Now, the Colts have a defense - the front being the only part which is kinda set - which has been put together for 3-4. Do you really want a guy who will force this unit to play 4-3, and otherwise OK at best? I don't.

My big hope is that we have a HC and DC that have a 3-4 with press man coverage philosophy. We have the personnel for that on our roster, I believe that defense can dominate with proper development and I remember the painful transition from our 4-3 when Pagano and his DC took over. It took years to changeover to the right personnel for the 3-4. We've already wasted too many of Luck's years without wasting more with a painful defensive changeout.

Yeah but it doesn't really hurt us. There's not any great talent worth giving up a hauls worth of draft picks for.

You say that as a non NFL GM or scout. It only takes one GM to love a particular player. Be it Rosen, or Darnold or Barkley or whomever.

.....  Since we appear to have a shot at the 2nd overall pick,  there's 51 percent of me that won't be upset if we lose to Houston in the final game of the season.

I won't be rooting for a loss,   but I won't be upset if it happens.

    That said....

There's also 49 percent of me that is hoping that the Colts beat the Texans, and when we do,  I'd love to see the team carry Pagano off the field on their shoulders.

I think that would be a nice way to say thanks, and goodbye.....

I'm not predicting that...    but I'd love to see it happen....

I suspect many here will disagree with me....    hey,  that's what makes the world go around....

One more week to go and a new world for Indianapolis will start....

That sounds very depressing. Hope for the best.

Early betting lines on the 2 games that matter are out.

Colts are even. I would expect us to be around minus 2 as we get closer to next Sunday.

Washington is 3 to 3.5 right now. I'm thinking that ones goes to 4.5. They are just better than NY and is home field really a significant edge in that game ? I doubt it.

Here's another interesting item that certainly effects the top of round one.

Neither Rosen or Darnold are locks to come out . Darold is only 20 years old and the word so far is that he could indeed go back to SC for another year. We did see similar with both our guys... Manning and Luck. As to Rosen , here something I just saw in Roto World.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, UCLA QB Josh Rosen prefers to play for the Giants and would be "hesitant to come out in next year's draft" if the Browns pursue him with the first overall pick.

Rosen is still deciding whether to enter the upcoming draft, where he would likely be a first-round selection. Per Schefter, he wants no part of the Browns, however, and may be tempted to return to UCLA for his senior year if it meant avoiding Cleveland. ESPN's Todd McShay projects Rosen as the No. 1 pick while Mel Kiper has him at No. 4. The winless Browns are a lock to draft a quarterback after missing on Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson the past two years.

Either way it won't very much effect the Colts draft.Don't worry. Be happy.
