  1. Ok, let's break these two picks down even more, since we have nothing to talk about until tomorrow.

Mewhort- can play all five positions on the offensive line, this is super valuable. Mewhort is a solid offensive lineman, even as a 6th if Thomas is healthy. Think of Mewhort as a much much better version of Linkenbach (Diversity in skillwise).

Moncrief- Uh... 1st/2nd round talent at 90th overall? Why not? He was a stud in college, and a top 8 WR on the draft boards. He's not a Sammy Watkins or a Mike Evans, but he's got the bruising features as a solid #2. Even if the Colts don't use him this year, he is insurance against the loss of Wayne AND Nicks next year. If Nicks doesn't pan out, and Wayne retires- You will be thanking the heavens that we had Moncrief to get familiar with the system. Besides, a WR Corps of Hilton, Moncrief, Rogers and Brazill doesn't look awful to me.

It wasn't a safety, and it wasn't defense- I understand why a lot of people are crying about it. We did just sign two stud defenders in free agency, in Arthur Jones and D'Qwell Jackson- and that gave us the ability to just draft the best talent available- which Moncrief's value was much higher than that of the DBs and Safeties in the draft at 90.

It will be fine. Grigson hasn't led us astray yet.

Even though Mewhort played LT for OSU, he cannot play LT in the NFL. I watched film of Mewhort last night. Speed rushers make him look foolish. He is not at all quick. I believe he will be relegated to guard. Even RT will be a stretch for him.

  2. Who do we get rid of then?  Whalen?

I've not been all that impressed by Brazil.  He's fast and that's about it.  In 2 years he still hasn't made himself into a viable route runner.

I'd rather keep the guy who can run routes and has good hands then just the guy who can run fast.

Whalen is not an NFL caliber talent. So easy to replace with another undrafted free agent. Say good bye to Griff.

  3. I think Grigson reached for Mewhort, don't like the pick. Brooks and Nix were better players and at a position of need. I do like Moncrief in the 3rd, great value. We can't count on Nicks and Wayne to stay healthy all season. Now, in the 5th i want Ed Reynolds or Dontae Johnson.

I have to agree, especially after watching game film of Mewhort. I just don't see the talent at all. He can hand fight small DE and DTs but he doesn't get physical with any defenders on run plays. He's "top heavy" and just plain underwhelming.

  4. Mewhort will NEVER be a legit LT in the NFL. I just watched the game film of OSU vs Clemson. Mewhort is far too slow and unathletic to handle a LT job. Speed rushers make him look silly. Even questionable for RT. He should offer reasonably good pass protection and line of scrimmage run blocking as a guard. Second level blocking for running...not so much.

I read that he was a high school all american as a center. However, he hasn't done that in 4 years.

  5. Man....this gets me SO hyped!! Jones is such a stud.

He gets in the backfield ridiculously fast, and sheds his blocks so easily.

I'm so glad we stayed out of the Paul Kruger sweepstakes too.

I'm with you on both counts. Kruger is way overpaid now and Jones looks to be a big upgrade for us.

  6. I expect Grigson will use the 59th pick for a high value position. Since we are good at QB, OT, WR (my opinion, since I like Rogers and Brazill) and TE... I would expect him to take a very good press cover CB prospect if one is available or a rush OLB or rush lineman if there is one that he likes. Even though safety and center are needs, they aren't generally high value positions in the NFL.

  7. He also said CB isn't play for the 2nd round pick at all. Hopefully that doesn't mean they definitely won't draft one or think they're ok at that position..

Is the "he" you refer to Grigson? I think so, but hope not. We are extremely thin at CB. When Toler goes down again, we move Butler from the slot and then practice squad corner Sheldon Price is next man up?

  8. What do you all think about drafting this guy in the later rounds as our KR/ PR?

If we are talking late round special teams, I'd rather go for a PK to compete with Vinatiere. Adam has been great, but he is the oldest player in the NFL; he doesn't kick off anymore; and his cap hit for a kicking specialist is quite high. (Need to get ready for Luck's big contract cap hit and this is one of the ways.)

  9. No way should we cut Hasselback.  We all saw what happened when we had to rely on Curtis Painter. Here's to hoping Luck never gets injured, but it is certainly worth it to have a solid back-up.

What happened when we had to rely on Curtis Painter?....we were able to draft Andrew Luck.

I subscribe to either having an outstanding year or a horrible year (premium draft picks to use or trade and an easier schedule the next year). Getting stuck in the middle is not a good place to be. Without Luck we would likely be stuck in the middle with Hasselbeck, so why not groom Harnish and perhaps see what he can do?
