I think it will all depend on how much Ballard likes Saquon Barkley.

On paper it's a great idea to pick up Chubb and the extra picks. However, if Chubb is a dud and the extra picks don't pan out either, then the Colts would look pretty stupid passing on Barkley. It's a very tough decision for Chris Ballard to make. It's a career defining decision.

If Barkley is a dud and the lack of extra picks leaves gaping holes on the team, then the Colts would look pretty stupid passing on a trade down scenario and still not having any pass rush.

To the bolded, that's just called bad drafting. Of course if the first round pick and all other picks obtained from a trade down don't pan out the Colts would look stupid. But so would 31 other teams in the same scenario.

Please i employ you. as fans of the colts look back at our history. Look at the past super bowls early on as per nfl channel super bowl  repeats  to learn about our history. The building blocks of our past. To be a true student of the game it is a must. Peyton Manning is always saying he is a student of the past and always learning from past history. A true fan will cherish this info and be proud of what we have accomplished. Don't  sell yourself short, no matter  what someone has said in a topic, if you are a true fan your opinion always matters .

You will find some people will always belittle  your insight,  because they are trying to impress in their misguided way their superiority  to make you feel inferior. This might ruffle  some feathers but ,  I truly  believe that  they think that Irsay or  the gm might think they are the voice and they actually will listen  to their comments and conceder only their  voice . No matter  how long you have been a fan in this forum please, don't be intimidated. your comments should not be as a fan belittled.

I know you are being sarcastic but anyone that has watched Barkley play knows he will be Great. Anyone that has watched Chubb still has questions. Do you see Dwight Freeney in Chubb? I don't, I see Marshall Faulk on steroids in Barkley.

I do agree Barkley has the potential to be great. I don't dispute that. What I do dispute is the notion that he would provide more of an improvement to our team as a whole than a great pass rusher. Furthermore, the difference in impact from a 2nd tier running back compared to a top tier one is much smaller, imo, than the difference in impact between top/2nd tier pass rushers. That discrepancy in replacement value is where I, and many others I presume, have an issue with being told RB is the only way to go here.

What Guarantees Barkley to Be a Superstar anymore than Chubb other than your or my opinions?  You are pegging that guy for the hall of fame before he even gets here.

Because when he watches Barkley play he says wow to himself. He does not say wow to himself when he watches Chubb play. That means HOF and best player in the league, duh!

I just showed you 3 random years, all of which makes my point VERY WELL!

Your facts are skewed to fit your opinion.

I think you need to look deeper at what actually happens in an NFL draft.

This is dumb. The argument isn't that every running back picked after the first round is awesome. You're arguing against a point that was never made. The idea would be to find out where the successful RBs in the league were drafted. How do you miss the point by such a huge margin? It's impressive really.

Where were those great defenses of Vikings and Jacksonville when it mattered?

All 4 of the final teams had top 5 defenses. Just because two teams had to lose doesn't make defense any less relevant.  Why does that even need to be said?

  7. There's a lot wrong with your posts but I'll keep it to two main points that I feel like answering (mainly because the baby just went to sleep so I need to try to get a couple hours in before he wakes back up)

In what world is any draft pick, especially a RB that struggled against top talent, a guarantee? Hint: Not this one.

People want a top defense because we do have that great QB. You said Jags and their #1 D couldn't keep up offensively - because they don't have that QB. Top QB+top D=success. Why do you think top qb/RB would be greater than top qb/defense? Steelers have a top 8 QB, top 3 RB, and the best WR in the game... and they fell apart when the leader of their defense went out. Why do you suppose that is?

We are going to disagree and that's fine... but some of your points make zero sense. Barkley is not a guarantee, despite what you're claiming. I'll take a top 10 offense and top 10 defense over a top 3 offense and bottom 5 defense every day of the week and twice on Sundays. You said yourself that the goal is SB... did you miss the Peyton years when we had a super offense and mediocre defense? We were continuously bounced from the playoffs until the D stepped up. Even if we got Barkley we wouldn't be on the same level as those Peyton offenses AND our D has no Freeny/Mathis/Booger/Sanders/etc. There's a reason they say defense wins championships and the professionals preach balanced team building.

Well duh, I give you one name why & that is Blake Fartles!  Andrew Luck + Barkley Mack combo + JM brilliance offense mind + 84 MILLION to buy a OL = One bad Mother to deal with.  Dominate run game w/ Luck think about that.

Luck is undefeated when Colts hold opponents to under 20 points I believe. Think about that.

    And Blake played well tonight.

BARKLEY hands down, that dominate Jags D couldn’t stop Tom Brady & neither will Chubb.  Move the chains is the SECRET ingredient, now let’s go get that missing Spice & put this debate to bed.

Fournette and the #1 rushing attack in the league couldn't stop the Pats either.

Silly.  You can always find a bust. Jamarcus Russell is no reason not to draft any QB at 1.

I’m not arguing for Barkley, but you can’t use Trent for an excuse not to draft him.  A better reason would be that even if he’s as good as Zeke we could probably get a RB later who would be almost as effective.

Not silly. Look at the post I quoted and was responding to. JShipp was stating how much better Barkley is than T-Rich coming out, which is revisionist history at best. It sounds like we actually agree in that anyone, no matter how hyped, can bust. I have also made the same argument in regards to the value above replacement in this draft in the Chubb/Barkley debate, stating that this is a deeper draft of RBs than Edge rushers. Looks like we're on the same page.

Trent had the best oline in football, nowhere near the lateral quickness, speed, hands, or vision...Not to mention, Barkley has  great character traits, intangibles, and a much higher IQ...Nothing to compare..

All I keep hearing is Barkley is the next Adrian Peterson. I've heard that before (several times since 2012 actually). Before you say there's nothing to compare, let's note what sports outlets were saying about good ole TRich before he came out.

BR "So while Richardson may not be as dangerous a quick-strike weapon as Peterson is, he's actually the safer pick coming out of college".

SB Nation Mike Mayock: Trent Richardson Is The Best Running Back Prospect Since Adrian Peterson

NFL.com combine profile "Richardson is as compact and coiled an athlete that the running back position has seen since Adrian Peterson"

CBS sports "Here's the argument for Trent Richardson: He's better than Adrian Peterson."

Bullcrap. Gruden is a very good coach thats why they signed him, had nothing to do with $$$$$

Del Rio got fired because hes a mediocre coach like Mularkey. Great for culture change but thats their ceiling. Period.

I don't buy that for a second.  But to each their own I suppose.

I dont want to have anything to do with the coaching staff of Del Rio. He got fired for a reason.

That reason was a marketing one for season ticket sales during the upcoming relocation.

    Gruden = $$$

He is the cannon ball of splash hires.

the game is changing , look around , Gurley look at jags , premier running backs come along one in a blue moon and Bark is one , draft the man and fix the o line in free agency not the draft , takes guys too long to be good , draft one on the next round or so   dnt forget Bell for the steelers

Just in recent years there's been Gurley, Gordon, Zeke, and Fournette that have been "generational" RB talents. How often is does a blue moon come around anyway?

  15. BPA should take need into account. Position value is a thing. The value above replacement between first round pass rushers vs day 2 pass rushers and first round RBs vs day 2 RBs is not equal. As ALFC said, with Luck in the lineup we're likely to have a potent offense again. If we ever want to compete for SBs again we have to build a defense. We have offensive cornerstones (Luck, Hilton, AC, Kelly). On defense we have Hankins and maybe Malik Hooker?  Just doesn't seem to make sense to splurge on a RB when we have a weak O-line and defense.
