  1. I think we can use Donald Brown this season. But I say another quality back should be brought in to raise the level of talent and competition. Somebody like Christine Michael, Knile Davis or someone else. Whoever it is, I expect them to have some speed.

    This ^

  2. He's actually a lot better when he has a competent back next to him and he doesn't have to carry the load. He's a decent change of pace back. See the green bay game for reference. Big time runs. Injuries are a concern. Why cut him when he can help the team? Just let his contract expire.

  3. i see us trying to lock up davis pretty early so we can hopefully get him  a lil cheaper before FA rolls around. Id like to see Bethea stay, bc hes a leader for the secondary and a vet that we need. i see us also locking up Boomstick.

I would like us to wrap up Davis now on a long term deal, until he becomes 8-9 million expensive. But I don't see that happening be cause his cap hit is so low and some people still want to see more out of him.

  4. Bethea at 7.6 mill ? IMO .. never happen. The transition tag is pretty much never used. But in any event , what are the following numbers you list ?

    Non exclusive:Bethea 8.1 MILDavis: 2.46 milConner: 595,000Angerer: 987,000Mcafee: 3.5 milDHB: 3 mil

The Conner # isn't even league minimum. What the heck is that ? Are you sure the rule states "which ever is less." I thought the 20% increase rule was more or less there to protect a player from being franchised two years in a row at around the same price. The SF safety was an example of this. He was tagged in 2012 , so if he was tagged agin in 2013 , the price would be the "greater"  (not smaller) price of 120% of 2012 salary or the # of the 2013 franchise price.

There is no way you can offer Davis 2.46 mill on any tag and get 2 1st round picks as compensation if he's signed by another team.

I think you need to re-visit where you pulled this info from or visit another source as those numbers are crazy wrong.

You're correct. PFT said lesser of two on non exclusive but it was wrong.

    Position. Non-Exclusive

    Wide receiver. $8,867,000

    Linebackers $9,619,000

    Cornerbacks $9,090,000

The bethea numbers and McAfee numbers are correct.

Nice catch, still a cheaper option than exclusive. Starks from.Miami got the non exclusive tag before signing his deal.

  5. Like you said, we were in contention every year, so between draft picks and FAs he was doing a good job,

I think everyone's biggest complaint would be with the Oline decisions. As you showed, a lot of linemen were brought in with very little success.

Your list of 12 draft picks looks pretty good right now. If we get three more from this draft I'd consider that outstanding simply because as the team gets better there will be fewer openings for starters.

Biggest complaints were oline and corners. He could.never get the CBs right either.

  6. Before I begin, no polian bashing. Let's have an honest non personal debate.

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/04/07/draft-grader-indianapolis-colts-2/

PFF is doing a draft review for all of the teams 2008-2011.

These assessment grades are based both on player performance AND expectations on where a player was drafted. It takes a lot less performance for a 7th round pick to achieve a higher grade than a 1st round pick due to the expectations of players selected in those rounds.

Here are the colts grades (2.0 being elite talent- -2.0 being bust)

+ 2.0 No one. + 1.5 No one. + 1.0 Pierre Garcon, Pat McAfee + 0.5 Phillip Wheeler, Jacob Tamme, Ricardo Mathews, Kavell Conner, Austin Collie 0.0 Marcus Howard, Tom Santi, Steve Justice, Mike Hart, Jamey Richard, Jerraud Powers, Curtis Painters, Jamie Thomas - 0.5 Mike Pollak, Donald Brown, Pat Angerer, Kevin Thomas, Jacques McClendon, Brody Eldridge, Ray Fishers - 1.0 Fili Moala, Terrance Taylor, Jerry Hughes - 1.5 No one. - 2.0 No one.

The heart and soul of an NFL team is typically their players from their 3rd year until about their 7th year.

Those players are experienced enough to now “know” the NFL game, cheap enough that they are not breaking your salary cap, and still young enough to perform with the younger up and coming NFL studs. More experienced players often can “know” the game and perform well; they are just now a whole lot more expensive!

Our 2007 draft class would be entering their 7th year of play in 2013 and look who was drafted:

    2007, Rd 1, # 32: Anthony Gonzalez 2007, Rd 2, # 42: Tony Ugoh 2007, Rd 3, # 95: Daymeion Hughes (who?) 2007, Rd 3, # 98: Quinn pitcock 2007, Rd 4, # 131: Brannon Condren 2007, Rd 4, # 136: Clint Sessions 2007, Rd 5, # 169: Roy Hall 2007, Rd 5, # 173: Michael Coe 2007, Rd 7, # 232: Keyunta Dawson.

Not one of those guys were a strength of this team over the past couple of years.

2008 (entering 6th year of NFL play) Polak Wheeler, Tamme, Howard, Santi, Justice, Hart, Garcon, Richard

2009 (entering 5th year of NFL play): Brown, Moala, Powers, Collie, Taylor, Painter, McAfee, Jamie Thomas

2010 (entering 4th year of NFL play): Hughes, Angerer, Kevin Thomas, McClendon, Eldridge, Mathews, Conner, Fisher

2011 (entering 3rd year of NFL play): Castonzo, Ijalana, Nevis, Carter, Rucker

So out of 39 players drafted by the Colts who are entering their 3rd through 8th year in the NFL, I count few that are probably long-term parts of this team going into 2013: McAfee, Castonzo, and Conner.

some nice bacps and role players (Nevis, perhaps Ijalana, Angerer, Moala, Brown)

    -

For years, Polian had some pretty good high end draft selections (Wayne, Freeney, Mathis, Clark, Edge, Sandes [when healthy]) and lower round pickups/UDFA (Saturday, Bethea, Hunter Smith, Gary Brackett, David Thornton and Charlie Johnson). Heck, even Rob Morris had a six-year run (4-years as starter) where he played in 14 games or more per year.

However, starting in about 2007; Polian’s drafts just started falling apart and the talent on team greatly suffered. His last successful draft, IMO, was 2006 where if found Addai, Charlie Johnson and Antoine Bethea in the same draft class.

Many could argue His drafts were also colored by the fact that the Colts were perennial Super Bowl contenders, and had a roster full of All Pro type players. When it came time to pick, how many times did he pass on a good player because of a lack of need at the position? Also, the changing of GM's and philosophy could have added to polians players being offed. Ex: change of offense/defensive schemes. Maybe he got complacent?

Regardless, polian kept us in contention year after year.

When looking back in 2015 or 2016, how many of Grigs' 2012 draft choices do you think we are going to look at as a "strength" of this team? Four? Five? Six? Luck, Allen, Hilton, Ballard, Fleener, Chapman. Time will tell.

  7. My reasoning behind keeping bethea is that he benefited by having bob Sanders on the field with him. Landry and Sanders have a lot of similarities in the way they play. With out a competent SS, bethea had to roam the box which doesn't bode well when your FS roams the box. Bethea had to virtually "do it all" after Sanders went down in 2009.

In 2007 and 2009, bethea had 4 interceptions each. You guessed it, pro bowl in both years.

With Landry in the box, bethea will return to pro bowl form. Plus, safeties last a lotlonger in today's NFL. See Dawkins, reed. Bethea is turning 29, arguably Still in his prime. I feel we should draft an eventual replacement, but bethea will surprise you with a competent safety next to him.

Bethea has always been a decent ballhawk, watch him return to form.

  8. I will concede, a rb would be nice with so many holes filled, but with the talent likely available at 24 I don't think Lacy is worth a pick here. I would take either Jones, one of the top guards, any of the decent pass rushers, or even a top cab before I even think about Lacy.

I think Stepfan Taylor would be a much better option in the fourth.

    Christine Michael...leveon bell.

  9. I figured since we still have time to kill before the draft I'd start something draft related while also using this exercise as a means of learning more about certain positions, This exercise I'd like to cover the O Line, Now this goes for any O Lineman in lets say that could go within the first 4 rounds of the draft that you feel may just completely tank and why in the NFL, I will start: Larry Warford........Reason:Not a great run blocker in space, Can get beat by quicker D Linemen with pass rush moves, Not as strong a hand punch as I thought

    Thoughts?

Hes a pretty good pass blocker, but not a mauler. I believe he would fit more as a LG than a RG. It would be a seamless switch. That will make him more effective at the next level. I hate when people throw out switching positions because it's not that simple...muscle memory and such. Warford may be the exception.

  10. Menelik Watson.

A player with very inconsistent hand usage, Watson may have trouble with defenders getting into his chest and controlling him at the line of scrimmage in his career unless he improves his aiming points. He shoots his hands quickly off the snap, but too often gets them caught outside of the defenders’ frame. When he makes an effort to get inside placement, his punch is impressive and quick, but not overly strong.

    http://m.youtube.com/index?&desktop_uri=%2F

Watson’s inexperience shows up more in his second-level blocking than any other facet of his game. When the defender is directly in his sightline and doesn’t move, Watson is capable of completely engulfing him. Moving targets are a different story, though, and too often Watson gets caught chasing linebackers from behind because he takes a poor initial angle and/or does not adjust to his target moving. He also has a tendency to put his head down, taking his eyes off his target and forcing him to miss.

He has a great story but he'll turn 25 before season starts. He has great feet but he's too raw. Hes only played against great competition for 1 year. He also had a terrible combine, where his athleticism should've blown everyone away. I just haven't seen enough to warrant a 1st round grade.

    Maybe I'm wrong..just my analysis.

  11. A little to early to say what I'd do but if Davis puts a whole year together like the end of the year he had last year then Davis should get the exclusive rights tag in my opinion

If know one throws an offer sheet his way, it would only cost us 2.46 mil. Win win?

  12. A little to early to say what I'd do but if Davis puts a whole year together like the end of the year he had last year then Davis should get the exclusive rights tag in my opinion

Why wouldn't we non exclusive tag Davis? If he signs an offer sheet, and we don't match, we get 2 first round picks. Interesting point.

  13. I'm not sure you can franchise tag and transitional tag in the same year.

I think you used to be able to do this....   but I'm not sure you still can?

If you can,  then I don't think a single team in the NFL did this year.    If so,  there must be a reason why it didn't happen....

    I'd be very curious...

Either way,   thanks for all the digging for the good info.....    always appreciated!

The transition tag is rarely used by NFL franchises. There are two reasons for this. The first is that the one-year transition offer is typically a large amount, which could provide the club with difficulties while attempting to keep the team's aggregate salaries under the salary cap. The other is that players often react badly to receiving the tag, because it limits their ability to negotiate with other teams and therefore hinders their chances of receiving the largest possible contract. Players sometimes counter the tag by holding out or refusing to play for the club, creating distractions and headaches for the club

Teams can use both franchise AND transition tag in same year.

  14. It's early but I wanted to see what people see now, then compare to the end of the season.

Here are our 2014 FA (I only posted candidates of franchise Tag)

    Antonie Bethea

    Vontae Davis

    Pat Angerer

    Kavell Conner

    Pat McAfee

    DHB

I predict most people will say Davis, but take into the account the tag cap hit/type of tag. (I'm going off current 2014 salaries so it doesn't take into effect any big contracts added)

    Exclusive:

    S: 8.55 MIL

    CB: 10.4 MIL

    LB: 9.58 mil

    P: 3.38 mil

    WR: 13.46

Also think of whether we use an exclusive or non exclusive tag. Here's the difference.

An "exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of a date in April of the current year in which the tag will apply, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater.

A "non-exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position for the previous year, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is less. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

    Non exclusive:

    Bethea 8.1 MIL

    Davis: 2.46 mil

    Conner: 595,000

    Angerer: 987,000

    Mcafee: 3.5 mil

    DHB: 3 mil

We also have the right to tag an additional player with a transitional tag, that's acts much like a RFA would just without compensation or tender rights. a team can designate one additional player only as a transitional tag. A transition player must be offered a minimum of the average of the top 10 salaries of the prior (2013) season at the player's position or 120 percent of the player's prior year's salary, whichever is greater. A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation.

    Transitional tag values

    S: 7.6 mil

    CB: 9.3 mil

    LB: 9.18 mil

    P: 3.07 mil

    WR: 11.67 mil

So what would you do? Please be specific instead of just throwing out a name. Does this change anything for you?

Sportrac has an amazing site where you can see the numbers. http://www.spotrac.com/top-salaries/nfl/average/safety/

  15. Just saw an article on nfl.com about him and I like the dude! I sure hope we draft him or that he at least goes undrafted and we take a shot at him then.

I could just see him getting at the QB and giving him a jolly good retort in his English accent.  :strong:  :scoregood:

Here is the article for anyone who cares.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000158087/article/lawrence-okoye-impresses-at-super-regional-combine

I'm all for bringing him in, but it looks like SF wants him.

  16. I just want to jump in and Ty for your time for giving us this information.Use to be Undecidedfrog and cannot remember who else posted all these numbers.Ty for your time again

Thank you guys for discussing and debating. Grigson can break the mold by not keeping players past their time and drafting replacement and readying them to replace. Keeps cap low and keeps us from overpaying veterans.

  17. lots of threads about first round RB's and their awesomeness...

I don't understand why people are insinuating that Ballard is not the future. He had a great year behind a terrible line. Let's sew how he improves this year before talking about replacing him with day 1 talent. I'm all for bringing in late round.talent as a change of pace but Ballard is our starter and I'm not ready to call for his replacement.

I predict he will surprise some people.
