  1. I am very curious why in theory Caldwell could potentially keep his job if the Colts go 0-16. I understand not having Manning is detrimental to the Colts and most of us admitted to it and probably all of us knew it but didn’t want to acknowledge it. But if you go 0-16 someone needs to answer for not being able to make proper adjustments and win any games. I don’t understand why Caldwell might get a free pass? Caldwell can’t ride on Peyton’s coat tails any longer!

because coaches sometimes survive an 0-16 season...sometimes.....

there's more circumstances that go into that decision other than just the record. I'm sure Polian will supply the PM excuse;) thats one free pass right there.

  2. @Chad72- Exactly, typically you would only leave your position for a serious pay raise or a better title, so the thread was almost suggesting if we want a new defensive coordinator, we are going to have to promote him to head coach, which again I am all for!

@Jay305- Yeah Zimmer is a solid option, Ryan wouldn’t necessarily have to retool to a 3-4 defense, but I agree it would be a strong possibility. Loud and boisterous he is, but he really knows how to work a defense.

@Jason- Of all of your suggestions I like Greg Williams the best, he certainly has reworked the Saints defense to be much more respectable, as they use the 4-3, it would just require the Colts to be more aggressive in their blitzing and slight schematic changes. LeBeau would probably not leave Pittsburgh, Monte Kiffin, I am not sure what he would do. I really like Dom Capers of Green Bay, I only fear like with Rob Ryan, it would require the shift to a 3-4, which could be possible, it would require trade downs to acquire more picks, and trading away players who may not fit a 3-4 i.e. Freeney/ Mathis. So chances are it would be a guy who could use a 4-3 of some sort, maybe the 4-3 Under which is a hybrid version of the 3-4.

  3. Exactly, I hope Caldwell doesn’t get a pass just because #18 isn’t here this season! If the Colts don’t win a single game this season why should get a pass? There were some winnable games so far this season given the circumstances. When Brady was out the Patriots went 11-5 and Cassel hadn’t played since high school! So Collins who has been around this league isn’t capable of winning games? The blame does and should fall directly on the coaching staff period. It’s time to clean house baby!

  4. My question to you Jason is what kind of staff and more who in particular would come with Billick, mainly what defensive coordinator, to me that is the key element, he no doubt would be a good HC because of his intelligence, but from his Minnesota/ Baltimore roots, who do you think he would bring here with him in the coaching staff?

  5. @Jason- We both know you like talking about the draft! Maybe Exodus hasn’t been on here in a while since all those threads are at least on pages further back! Besides what better to talk about than next year with what the draft could bring and the possibility of a new head coach, these seem like the two hot topics. Besides you offer up a lot of knowledge on the draft anyway, so just share some more on here with Exodus. :)

  6. @Exodus- I have many posts on here about how the Colts should trade back no matter what, we can all only hope if they trade back its from the first pick so we get the most compensation available to help build this team. I have been saying to take a Matt Kalil with the first pick, move Castonzo to RT and Ijalana to Guard, but this was viewed as radical because Polian says Ijalana is a Right Tackle, so that must be all he can be? In my post “Colts are in Trouble” I said at the end this team needs to rebuild and it starts in the trenches on both sides of the ball, even though there is need for a corner, you build inside out, not outside in. that’s why trading back would allow for a Kalil and Kerpatrick possible selections in the first round!

  7. Is Carolina running a 3-4 or 4-3 this season? Colts need someone new, there needs to be a culture change, a shift towards bringing some physicality with their finesse. Physicality is what wins in the playoffs (running the ball and stopping the run) and if you can combine that with finesse aspects (stopping the pass, rushing the passer, throwing the ball) you have a winning formula. That’s exactly what Green Bay had finesse in stopping the pass, rushing the passer, and throwing the ball, yet they brought the physicality in stopping the run and pounding the ball to create balance!

  8. @Jason- Yeah people were shocked here when he fired his close friend Fossil, who was the Giants HC against the Ravens in the Super Bowl! No doubt Billick has a very high football IQ and I would prefer him to Caldwell, when he is on the NFL Network with Jim Mora it looks like they both wanted back on the sidelines!

@Blazer40- I am with you on a defensive guy here, or at least a really talented and proven defensive coordinator brought in. Problem is the good ones are probably being paid well and have good situations,

Rob Ryan in Dallas, Marinelli in Chicago, Capers in Green Bay, Dick Labaugh Pittsburgh- all these guys are responsible for pretty good teams in good situations, it would be hard to pry them away without offering the HC position, which we both agree we would like.

Mike Zimmer is out there and Cincy’s defense is very good and has always been respectable, not to mention they run the 4-3 and he could easily come in and fix this D.

Jason mentioned Steve Spagnolo of the Rams who I really like, but unless he gets fired not going to happen. Mike Singletary may be a little extreme for my liking. And there is the obvious Fisher, Gruden, Cowher.

  9. @Chad72- I live in Baltimore, hence Bmore(Colt) and I get to watch the Ravens D every week. Their Achilles heal ironically is their secondary as well (personnel related), but Pagano is aggressive and has done great things for the Ravens D, it helps to have an amazing defensive front against the run, and a really good line backing core! If he wouldn’t have to make drastic changes in Indy, it could work!

@OJI- That’s a pretty strong opinion about the Ryan brothers, I understand its not traditionally what the Colts have done, but the proof is in the pudding with both guys, Rob is doing a fantastic job with that Dallas defense, and before he was there on “America’s team” he was out of the media fish bowl, so maybe his attitude and garish ways could bring some intensity and swagger to the Colts!

@Doogansquest- I know people contradict themselves, but I am most definitely not one of them, my opinions about this subject have never changed, although you were probably speaking in a more general tone.

@Jason- I can’t stand Billick, I thought he was over rated when I watched him here in Baltimore. The guy was deemed the offensive guru when he was the OC in Minnesota with Moss, Carter, and Culpepper, while the Ravens never had a top offense with him under the helm. Although he does have a high football IQ, for him to be the head coach for me it would depend on the personnel he would bring in, mainly what defensive coordinator!

  10. For those Colts fans (Including myself) who want a new head coach or a new defensive coordinator. Bringing in a new defensive coordinator, who has the resume and proven credentials, is probably unrealistic, unless he is going to be the new head coach. I am all for this, Peyton can run the offense and the new head coach being a former defensive coordinator obviously has the defense and game management components. Now with that said, the two defensive coordinators that come to my mind are Mike Zimmer and Rob Ryan. Both would not leave their current positions just to come be the defensive coordinator of the Colts; however for the lure of the title of Head Coach and the opportunity it would present for just fixing the defense and having a playoff team every year in the Manning era, they would both probably be chomping at the bit for such an opportunity! Both are very qualified and all I have to say is look at both the defenses, both are serious, even the Bengals!

Pros: Rob is more of a mastermind and would bring in exotic looks as well as some attitude and swagger to this Colts Defense.

Cons: Because of his exotic looks, there would need to be personnel adjustments and a new system implemented.

Pros: Mike runs a 4-3 in Cincy so there wouldn’t have to be a whole lot of a system change, he also isn’t outspoken and garish, but demands hard work and discipline.

Cons: It would take getting used to his style of coaching, being a disciplinarian who demands the respect and hard work of his players.

  11. On the old forum I was saying the Colts are in trouble heading into the season, how there needed to be a culture change and shift towards more physical players and a physical mindset. Green Bay, the super bowl champs have a physical defense mixed with some finesse pass rushing and secondary pieces, their offense finesse with the ability to be physical at times (see playoffs) and power run the football. My question is why can’t the Colts shift towards this? None the less here we are today, and the Colts are really beat up, again! The O-line and D-Line are plagued with injuries, why, because we have smaller more finesse players trying to be physical! That doesn’t just happen overnight either, just like a culture change doesn’t. When #18 comes back next year and its business as usual, and the Colts are in the playoffs, all these holes will be forgotten, as Manning has covered them up his entire career!

  12. @doogansquest-

I couldn’t agree more, and actually am kind of shocked you are not for Luck. But I agree 100% he is not good for the Colts short term or long term. Short term he gets paid a solid cap chunk to sit behind Manning and hold a clipboard, long term is has a lower ceiling than other QB prospects out there. Just because he is the most NFL ready, doesn’t mean he is the best option out there! So if the Colts finished with the number one overall pick would you advise a trade down or what would your selection be?

  13. This week’s game against the Chiefs is realistically the game the Colts need to win, whether that is going to happen is another story. The Bengals are actually better than given credit for, they are playing inspired/tough football on the defensive side of the ball! I don’t think the Colts can match the grit and intensity the Bengals play with, someone mentioned this before, maybe the Colts need to take a good look at Zimmer for a coaching position!

  14. The Colts have recently played inspired football, on two primetime games. Some of this is attributed to the fact that it was a primetime game, some of this is inspiration and rallying in the locker room/on the field, some of this is from coaching/preparation, and some of this is because the media is all over the Colts! Despite all of this and the “improved” performance, THE COLTS ARE IN TROUBLE! The injury bug is going around again, and it’s not only taking veterans, but its claiming young players, all of whom are personnel that needed this evaluation time this season! The Colts drastically need improvement on the defensive side of the football, while the Colts held up against the run the first three quarters, the fourth quarter (crunch time) was disastrous as Blount racked up over 60 yards and a score to add on to the 60 yards through the first three quarters. The run defense appears to be better, but there are missing pieces. The secondary is horrible beyond words, and the defense as a whole really struggles to tackle! When #18 is back, we all know the offense is going to click, but unless there is a major overhaul and rebuilding in the trenches on the offensive and defensive lines, Peyton won’t be protected to extend his playing career, and the Colts will continue to struggle against power teams. The Colts need to become a more balanced team of finesse and power, this is on both sides of the ball. Although the secondary is atrocious and needs vast improvement and quick, the Colts need to rebuild and quick, and the only way you build a team is from inside out!

  15. Typically when you mention a free agent acquisition, at least I found on the old forum, that it became a very critical issue, I was simply saying getting the right free agent doesn’t mean over paying for a person either.. but I am not sure about the cheap part, sometimes you get what you pay for. :P

  16. Ijalana also never played Right Tackle in college, so now all of a sudden he is a Right Tackle? I consider all opinions and view points, I am an equal opportunity listener! So when Kiper and McShay, who both know the game and study countless hours of game tape say the guy is versatile, he has the skill set to be a Tackle or Guard, than why would that be wrong? Ijalana excels in run blocking, he was called a “mauler” with the physicality to play the position, so why is that not an adequate suggestion? I never said he couldn’t play Right Tackle, and Polian has intentions of him playing so, but why does that mean that’s the only position he could play?

  17. I think we need an impact player at both positions, that doesn’t mean it needs to be the over paid players of the world like this past offseason ale Eric Weddle, who was very overpaid. We need an impact SS who has coverage abilities but really is better known for being a box safety and puts the wood in people, I am talking a Laron Landry type, think the Colts missed out on Whitner and Mikel! And a physical tackling corner who can run support as well would be ideal!

  18. Not a knock on you bro but it’s not as if Polian has never made a mistake on evaluating talent in the draft before. Not him, he produces superb draft after superb draft. Seriously though, his intentions may be to have Ijalana play right tackle, but that doesn’t mean that’s what he is cut out for or all he could play because Polian says so? Mel Kiper and Todd McShay both praised him as having versatility to play Tackle or Guard, as well as other members of different college projections on ESPN, CBS Sports, Etc… They even said he would be well suited to play Guard and I did a lot of research on players Colt’s drafted and didn’t draft before and after the draft. But since Polian says so, in Polian we must trust? Sorry I am not buying it!

  19. Mightisright- I apologize if I came off strong, I am glad you started the topic with no Luck in mind! I have been in tons of other threads saying why we shouldn’t go that direction, and how we should use his name to trade down and better our team! I didn’t mean to be a Debbie downer saying the Colts will get first pick, but it is a VERY realistic possibility. My bad if I came off strong, hard to tell tone and intentions over font. :)

  20. Malakai- I think we both agree that Ijalana could become a dominant Guard, although he has the skill set to play Tackle.

MouthFire- I agree with you also that he could play Right Tackle and putting him at Guard could potentially stunt his growth if that is the position he is going to play. But there is no doubt he has the skill set in pass protection to be a tackle, and the nasty grit and mauling ability to be a Guard, I think whichever direction the Colts are going to go with Ijalana, they need to evaluate him and find out now, that means putting him in the starting lineup, what better way to learn than to get reps. All the repetition now is going to give the staff a better understanding :

    1. If he is a Guard or Tackle
    2. If they need to pursue another Guard or Tackle in the draft or free agency
    3. If he will be ready to protect MANNING next year, this means he needs to get the kinks, rookie mistakes and the errors out now, while its Painter/Collins

  21. I agree with Jack on this one, Ijalana needs to get thrown into the fire. Unfortunately the Colts are not going anywhere this season, and the talent of young players and frankly all the personnel for that matter need to be evaluated. This is on both sides of the field, and while it is true that there was some talk about Ijalana really developing into a "Good Tackle" as they called him, there was also a lot of speculation that he could be a "DOMINANT GUARD." Since he possesses a good pass protection skill set and was called a "MAULER" in run blocking. Colts need to find out what he is cut out for NOW, since this can be a rebuilding year and evaluation time, because when #18 is back, I want Lombardi’s!

  22. Yeah man, I definitely want to see us do whatever it takes to give Manning the best possible team around him to give us a shot at winning some more Lombardi Trophies!

    Couldn't agree more!

I keep daydreaming that we will get the #1 pick and that the Browns will be interested in getting Luck, and trade us their two 1st round picks (hopefully plus another mid-round pick) for him.

Personally IMO, I think the Browns like what they have in McCoy, acquiring their picks would be great, but McCoy has worked hard and improved this year. However with this said, we could trade the pick for Luck to San Francisco, since they will definitely be wanting a QB and since Harbaugh coached Luck at Stanford. We'd get their 1st round pick, and also 2nd, which should be somewhere around mid-round picks, plus I'm sure at least a few other picks or players.

That seems very very realistic, realistically I don't know what players we would/could get, Willis would be the Ultimate, then on defense either Whitner SS, or Justin Smith DT.. on offense maybe Crabtree or the OG they drafted two years ago, he is Hawaiian I think?

You obviously want a revamped and well built O-Line, the key is gonna be how Ijalana develops. I think its ironic how this years draft has more O-Line talent coming out then last years, just from first glance (I could be wrong), and last year had more D-Line talent and the Colts took O-Line, cause they took Huges instead of Saffold two years ago. Interesting how that worked out...
